Staff at the Thai Dynasty restaurant in Singapore never thought they’d receive such a huge tip during the COVID-19 pandemic(流行病) when economic condition seemed hard, let alone one as big as $600. But believe it or not, they did.
What was more surprising, however, was the person who left that massive tip for them. It wasn’t from a customer who was feeling extra generous that day. No, it was Jesse, a food delivery rider who came by to pick up an online order.
Being a familiar face among the staff due to frequent orders from the restaurant, the delivery rider wanted to show his best appreciation for their hard work in ensuring orders are prepared on time every time he comes by to pick something up. Along with the tip, he also left a heartfelt written note.
“Hello! I am writing to you all because I am very happy with your food and friendly customer service,” the note starts. “I want to say that your food is really delicious. You know, every day when I’m working, I see you all working so hard, which makes me feel proud of you all. Working is not easy, and I understand that because I am also working. Therefore, I want to thank you all for the good food and I want to help you all. Here inside is $600, for all of you. Share it among yourselves. Thank you once again!”
Speaking to Shin Min Daily, Thai Dynasty director Jason Pay said he never expected such a thing from a delivery rider, despite Jesse being a familiar face. “Employees are allowed to keep the tips for their good service, but they chose to return it, which I’m touched by,” Pay said.
Yes, they managed to return the super generous tip when Jesse swung by a few hours later to pick up another order. But seeing the hard work that the delivery rider highlighted in his staff, Pay decided to reward them the next day with pizza and other dishes for lunch.
    4. What does the underlined word “It” in the second paragraph refer to?
    A. An order. B. A note. C. The delivery. D. The tip.
    5. What did the staff do to show their appreciation?
    A. They treated the rider with delicious pizza and other dishes.
    B. They helped the delivery rider get more orders.
    C. They gave back the tip to the delivery rider.
    D. They told the story to the newspaper.
    6. What impressed Jesse most about the restaurant?
    A. The familiar faces. B. The positive working attitude.
    C. The generous customers. D. The delicious food.
    7. Which saying can best describe the text?
    A. Experience must be bought. B. When in Rome, do as the Romans do.
    C. A hero is known in the time of misfortune. D. Everyone’s love will make the world a better place.

    【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段第一句“Being a familiar face among the staff due to frequent orders from the restaurant, the delivery rider wanted to show his best appreciation for their hard work in ensuring orders are prepared on time every time he comes by to pick something up.(由于餐厅的订单频繁,外卖骑手在工作人员中是一个熟悉的面孔,每次他来取东西时,都想对他们的辛勤工作表示感谢,以确保订单按时准备好)”可推知,令Jesse印象最深的是这家餐厅里员工们积极的工作态度。故选B。

Well, to pick up where we left off last time. I’m certain that you know all too well the dangers hiding on the World Wide Web. And whether it’s for schoolwork, entertainment, or just socializing with friends, the Internet will surely be a major part of your child’s life. So, it’s important to secure their online stays.
It’s not the easiest thing, but keeping open lines of communication is primary. Let them know they can share their online activities with you. Talk to them about their online presence as early as possible, ideally before they begin to use email, social media, or a smartphone. Discuss what they find interesting online and learning from them about popular websites and apps; this will create understanding and allow you to identify potential risks.
Next, monitor without spying. Most kids learn to understand boundaries, like respecting others’ personal space, or not opening the cookie jar without asking. Internet use is no different. It’s helpful for kids to have ground rules as to which websites they can visit, which apps they can use, and what they can share online. Remind them that if they feel uneasy with anything that occurs online, they need to alert an adult immediately.
How you handle your kids’ internet usage will depend in large part on their age. There are sites and browsing tools meant for younger kids, such as YouTube Kids, which aims to provide a safe online experience for children.Older kids may be allowed more freedom since they want to network and need to use the internet for information-gathering. But you can set boundaries that feel right for you. Just limit access appropriately.
Allowing your children to make good decisions online teaches them responsibility, shows that you trust them, and reminds them that rules may be tightened if they disobey them. Stay tuned.
    8. What might be talked about last time?
    A. The history of the World Wide Web. B. How the Internet influences people.

    10. What does “alert” underlined in Paragraph 3 mean?
    A. Inform. B. Reveal. C. Look after. D. Tell off.
    11. What is the best title for the text?
    A. What Is Hidden on the Net? B. How to Make Online Stays?
    C. Be a Smarter Internet User D. Keep Your Kids Safe Online

What’s the first thing that pops into your mind when you think of wheat straw? Most people would probably just see it as a pile of waste in a farmer’s field. However, Wu Cui, an intangible cultural inheritor, can turn the straw left over from harvested wheat into beautiful and eye-catching functional artworks.
The earliest straw-weaving(草编的)products were discovered at Hemudu Cultural Ruins, a Neolithic cultural site located in eastern China’s Zhejiang province. The Book of Rites, one of the classical works of Confucianism, also records that there were already mats made of cattail grass and professional straw-weaving craftsmen during the Zhou Dynasty(c.11th century-256 BC).
Straw weaving is a method of making daily items or artworks. It was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage in 2008.
Wu explains the process of straw weaving: selection of materials is the first step of a complicated, time consuming and labor-intensive process that can take weeks, or even months, to complete. You need to sketch(索描)the piece on paper, which requires drawing skills. Next comes weaving, shaping and preserving of the work. Even by finishing that process, it does not mean that you will always create a good piece of work, and the hardest part is to make it lifelike.
In the past, woven straw items could be found almost in every household in the countryside, such as straw hats and straw shoes, because they were practical in everyday life. But due to the impact of industrialization, manufactured goods have replaced such products, which cause low profits, and there are only about 100 individuals engaging in the work across the country. “The world has changed, and craftsmen need to transcend(超越)practicality and pursue the beauty and artistry of straw culture to help the craft survive and thrive(茁壮成长),” Wu says.
From her perspective, straw weaving should respond to people’s needs and preferences, while still drawing inspiration from traditional culture, “Craftspeople should make a great effort to grasp the trends and opportunities of the times to create new and relevant products,” she says. When asked about her plans, Wu says she wants to dig deeper into local traditional culture and create cultural creative products by developing the straw-weaving technique.
    12. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about straw-weaving products?
    A. Their historic origins. B. Their cultural value.
    C. Their major uses. D. Their producing process.
    13. Which is the most difficult part for straw-weaving craftsmen according to Wu Cui?
    A. Selecting suitable materials. B. Drawing sketches on paper.
C Making the artworks vivid. D. Preserving finished products.
    14. What can we learn from Wu Cui’s opinion according to the last paragraph?
    A. Craftsmen should bring forth new ideas in the crafts based on traditional culture
    B. Pursuing fashion should be the first preference for eraftspeople.
    C. Local people benefit a lot from the straw—weaving techniques.
    D. Straw-weaving products are out of favor with customers.
    15. What is the main purpose of the passage?
    A. To explain the process of straw weaving. B. To present the future of a traditional culture.
    C. To introduce a way to pursue the beauty and artistry. D. To propose a new means of crafting.
    【答案】12. A 13. C 14. A 15. B
    【解析】

The Book of Rites, one of the classical works of Confucianism, also records that there were already mats made of cattail grass and professional straw-weaving craftsmen during the Zhou Dynasty (c.11th century-256 BC).(最早的草编产品是在河姆渡文化遗址发现的,河姆渡文化遗址是位于中国东部浙江省的新石器时代文化遗址。 故选A。
    【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“Even by finishing that process, it does not mean that you will always create a good piece of work, and the hardest part is to make it vivid.(即使完成了这个过程,也并不意味着你总是能创造出一件好的作品,最难的部分是让它生动起来)”可知,吴翠认为草编技艺最难的地方在于让作品栩栩如生。故选C。

    Yours faithfully,
    Li Hua
    【答案】Dear Sir/ Madam,
I’m Li Hua, a student from China. I’m writing to ask you for help in saving South China Tigers.
Their population is dropping at an alarming rate as their living spaces are becoming smaller and smaller due to the cutting of trees. Also, they are being hunted illegally for their valuable fur, skin and bones.
Personally, some efforts can be made to help rescue the endangered tigers. Above all, we should raise people’s awareness by turning to the social media for help. We can put out enough information on the website to stir up people’s interest in saving the tigers. We can also post some pictures to remind people of their serious situations. What’s more, governments of different countries must play a part. It would be a good idea if they could help pass laws to stop people hunting and buying tiger products. Only when buying stops will the hunting be stopped completely. More importantly, they can start national protection programmes, where nature reserves are set up to place the endangered species and volunteers are gathered to watch over them. If possible, the government can also train the tigers outside the reserve so that they can one day all return to the wild.
I sincerely hope you will take my proposals into consideration and help to protect these animals for their benefit and for the benefit of us all.
    Yours faithfully,
    Li Hua
