Dale Carnegie was an American writer and lecturer, and the developer of famous courses in self-improvement, salesmanship, corporate training, public speaking and interpersonal skills.
Born in 1888 in Maryville, Missouri, Carnegie was a poor farmer’s boy. His family moved to Belton, Missouri when he was a small child. In his teens, though still having to get up at 4 am every day to milk his parents’ cows, he managed to obtain an education at the State Teacher’s College in Warrensburg. His first job after college was selling correspondence courses. He moved on to selling bacon, soap, and lard (猪油) for Armour & Company.
After saving $500, Dale Carnegie quit sales in 1911 in order to achieve a lifelong dream of becoming a lecturer. He ended up instead attending the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York, but found little success as an actor. Later he got the idea to teach public speaking. In his first session, he suggested that students speak about “something that made them angry”, and discovered the technique that made speakers unafraid to address a public audience. From its beginning, the Dale Carnegie Course developed. Carnegie had made use of the average American’s desire to have more self-confidence.
Perhaps one of Carnegie’s most successful marketing moves was to change the spelling of his last name from “Carnagey” to Carnegie, at a time when Andrew Carnegie was a widely recognized name.
Carnegie’s works include Lincoln the Unknown (1932), Public Speaking and Influencing Men in Business (1937), and How to Stop Worrying and Start Living (1948). His greatest achievement, however, was when Simon & Schuster published How to Win Friends and Influence People. The book was a bestseller from 1936. By the time of Carnegie’s death, the book had sold five million copies in 31 languages, and there had been 450,000 graduates of his Dale Carnegie Institute.
Carnegie died at his home in New York in 1955.
4. What do you think of Dale Carnegie’s childhood?
A. Joyful. B. Difficult.
C. Lonely. D. Boring.

A. Helping people to get wealthy. B. Encouraging one to trust himself.
C. Teaching people speaking skills. D. Advising people to live happily.

C. To avoid misunderstanding. D. To become more famous.
7. Which of the following is Dale Carnegie’s most successful work according to the passage?
A. Lincoln the Unknown.
B. How to Win Friends and Influence People.
C. How to Stop Worrying and Start Living.
D. Public Speaking and Influencing Men in Business.

The decision on Tuesday by Japan and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to postpone the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games until next summer because of the novel coronavirus pandemic must have been a hard one to make.
Although the Games have been canceled — three times in all, in 1916, 1940 and 1944 — due to the two world wars in the modern Olympics’ history of more than 120 years, never before have any Games been postponed to a different year.
Nonetheless, the decision is the right one. If it is not brought under control, the harm done to human society by the pandemic could be more serious and far-reaching than even the two world wars. Given the number of countries affected and social and economic shock waves that have been caused by the rapid spread of the virus, postponing the Games is the only right and sensible choice to make.
After all, nothing is more important than people’s lives. Postponing the Games not only safeguards the health of athletes, audiences and everyone involved in the Games, but also reduces potential transmission of the virus from one place to another. Even looking at it from only a sporting level, the pandemic has already caused huge disruptions to athletes’ training and the qualification process.
It is undoubtedly a big blow for Japan, which has prepared meticulously for the largest sports event in the world, including renovating and upgrading its infrastructure and sports venues, such as rebuilding Tokyo’s Olympic Stadium at a cost of $1.45 billion. Japan will suffer huge loss at least in the short term.
The international community owes a big “thank you” to Japan for all it has done for the Games despite the postponement. That’s why the Games will still be called the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020 despite taking place in 2021. The Olympic flame will also remain stored and displayed in Japan.
More importantly, all members in the Olympic family, guided by the Olympic spirit of respect and understanding are morally bound to stand behind Japan to go through this most difficult moment in the Games’ history.
8. How many times have the Games been put off in the modern Olympics’ history before?
A. Once. B.Twice. C. Three times. D. Not for once.
9. What does the underlined word “meticulously” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. Wisely. B. Recently. C. Easily. D. Precisely.
10. We know from the passage ________.
A. the Games should be put off in times of war and disaster
B. the Games will still be called Tokyo 2020 Games for its sacrifice
C. postponing the Games will have a bad influence on the athletes
D. the Olympic family will have to make up for the loss of Japan
11. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. The whole world will support Japan.
B. Japan will keep the Olympic flame burning.
C. Postponing the Games will bring the world hope.
D. Tokyo will become the symbol of the Games.
D
I heard a story recently about a friend’s former boss. When employees would go into this person’s office to discuss something like a pay rise or promotion, the boss had a habit of greeting their request with silence. Quiet, tense seconds went slowly by, and they’d often leave, willing to take a pay cut or demotion (降职) — anything to end the terrible silence.
Embarrassing silences can be unbearable. In 2017, a study found that silence in a talk starts to be unbearable after about four seconds. There’s so much uncertainty in the air as those silent seconds went slowly by. Did I say something wrong? Does this person hate me? Am I going to get fired? But it’s worth remembering that if you don’t know what to say or do, there is always the choice to do nothing. Uncomfortable silences aren’t necessarily a bad thing, depending on how you use them.
For example, Katie Donovan is a supporter of the awkward-silence negotiating (谈判) technique. As she said, “The first step is to be silent or shut up!” If, for example, you are offered a starting salary of $40,000 when you know that the median salary for this position is $48,000, you can say something like this, “Thank you for the offer. I’m a little surprised about the salary, though. Based on my research I would have expected it to be in the $50,000 range.”
It’s a good start; there is no phrase more quietly deadly in the business world than “I’m a little surprised”. But it only works if you say this — and then say nothing. During this pause, Donovan explains, the hiring manager is likely to try to work out how serious you are and how much more to offer. “Remember,” Donovan writes, “the hiring manager most likely will increase the salary during the meeting.”
12. What would the employees often do when they met with the boss’s silence?
A. Keep silent. B. Get angry. C. Fight back. D. Give in.
13. What does the author say about silence in Paragraph 2?
A. It is a basic part of communication.
B. It gives people time for themselves.
C. You don’t have to break it all the time.
D. The meaning of it varies among people.
14. What does the underlined word “median” mean in Paragraph 3?
A. Average. B. Highest.
C. Final. D. Starting.
15. What should you do after saying “I’m a little surprised”?
A. Give up your request. B. Keep silent for a while.
C. Avoid making eye contact. D. Continue to give your reasons.
五、七选五(每小题2分,共10分)
As is known to everyone, we all care about what others think of us and want to be liked.
1 However, there are also many smaller, simpler things you can do, which can affect how others view you.
Prove you are paying attention.
To really show someone your interest in him or her, try bringing up a topic the person mentioned earlier. Did your coworker talk about working with his son on a science fair project last week? Follow up and ask how it went. 2 In fact, the main point is that you can recall and show interest in small happenings in another person’s life.
Handle criticism in a wise way.
While you want to be generous with your praise, be careful with your criticism. For example, if someone makes an error, don’t call that person out in front of a group. 3 Anyhow, be always gentle with criticism and only offer it when it’s truly needed.
Ask for advice.
Asking someone for advice is a great way to get people to like you. It shows that you respect the other individual’s opinion. 4 When you make someone feel better about himself or herself, that person will most certainly end up liking you for it.
5
Most people love to talk about themselves. If you are asking questions and getting people to talk about themselves, they’ll leave the conversation thinking that you’re the coolest.
A. Try to be confident and respectful.
B. Everyone likes to feel needed and important.
C. It doesn’t have to be a big, lifechanging event.
D. Ask other people about their lives and interests.
E. Always use an individual’s name in a conversation.
F. You can discuss your own mistakes before digging into someone else’s errors.
G. The basics of getting people to like you are obvious — be nice, considerate and polite.

The Cost of a Smile
Kathy was a young woman in her 20’s who worked in a small restaurant as a waitress. One day, as she went about her shift with her usual angry look, a kind old man walked in and sat down at the counter. He read the menu and politely told her what he wanted.
Kathy took his order, and yelled, “Your food will be ready soon.” As she turned to leave, the man said, “A smile costs nothing.” Kathy rolled her eyes at him and walked away.
She brought his order, cleared his plates and gave him the bill, for which he left a nice tip.
Each time the old man saw her, he smiled and thanked her. This only made her angrier.
A week went by, and every day the man came for lunch and the same thing happened. And each time Kathy took his order he would say, “A smile costs nothing.”
But a week later, Kathy picked up a menu, wrote the words “I SMILE...$20” at the bottom, and placed it on the counter for the kind old man to see.
He came, and Kathy waited for his reaction as he read the menu. The old man ordered his usual and added, “...and a smile, if you don’t mind.” Kathy was so surprised. She laughed out loud. “Now, now...” The man jokingly scolded, “I ordered a smile, not a laugh.” So Kathy put on a bright smile and said, “Coming right up, sir.” And to her surprise, he left a $20 tip!
A few years went by, and the two bonded like family. Charlie, the kind old man, was a retired manager whose wife passed away long ago. He spent most of his time at home, with exception of his frequent restaurant visits. Every day Kathy spent her break talking to him.

Kathy nearly fainted, but then she noticed a handwritten note which read, “Dear Kathy, by the time you read this, I will be gone. Here I have left for my best friend a small token of my gratitude I can never repay you for what you have given me, for you see, Kathy, a smile is worth much more than $20. Indeed, a smile is priceless.”
