The Christmas I will never forget happened when I was 9. I believed in Santa with all my heart. How could I not when I received everything I wished for.
December 1st. Mom would announce, “It’s time.” Hearing those words, we all knew it was time to write our letters to Santa. One day I asked mom why we always wrote our letters on December 1st. She said because so many kids were writing letters to Santa, he needed time to read them and make all the toys the kids wanted. Once our letters were finished, mom would put them in her purse and mail them the next day.
Christmas Eve finally arrived. We were all so excited. We did our Christmas Eve traditions. Daddy read us The Night Before Christmas’ story. Then it was time for sleep. I had such a good feeling about Christmas this year. It was difficult to fall asleep. But sleep finally came and so did Christmas morning. I woke up hearing my brothers yelling. Jimmy came running and jumping on my bed. “Santa’s been here, sister! Let’s open presents!”
We ran down the stairs. Our eyes were glowing like wildfire as we eyed over the presents under the tree. My brothers and I quickly snuggled (依偎) among the packages. We all watched as each person unwrapped a gift. I kept watching as my brothers unwrapped gifts. My dad didn’t hand me any package. “This year you are going to be the last to get your presents because you are the oldest.” he declared. I didn’t think anything of it, so I whispered “OK.”
One by one all of the packages had been opened. There was none left. I couldn’t understand. I had been so good this year. Tears began sliding down my cheeks. I ran up to my room. My mom went up the stairs for me to come back down. Dad wanted to talk to me, Sobbing, I slowly made my way back.

Adler lived with his unemployed mother and a younger brother in a small house in Durango. Like other boys at his age, the small, golden-haired boy wanted to play with his friends and have fun, but fate had other plans. After observing what was happening in his house, the boy decided to do something for his family. He picked up his only toy, a ball, and left his house with a mission—to help his family.
Little Adler walked to the nearest store with his last toy in hand, hoping he could sell it. His innocent mind could only come up with this idea to help his mother, unaware that no one would buy the ball from him. While the little boy was selling his toy at the street, a man with the TikTok name Ruben Cervantes spotted him. Curious, he approached Adler to see what happened to that little boy.
With tears in his eyes, the little one said, “I just want to sell my only toy, sir. Would you like it?” When Cervantes learned Adler was selling his toy to help his family, he asked, “How much is it?” Adler replied, “I don’t want money, sir.  just want milk and bread for my family.”
At that moment, Cervantes was so moved how this little mind could possess such mature concepts. While other children at his age were enjoying and living a carefree life, Adler was worrying about his home’s financial situation. Without hesitation, Cervantes took the ball from the boy, gave him a hug and said, “Don’t cry, my boy. I’ keep your ball for now, hoping to play it with you one day.”
Cervantes did buy milk and bread in exchange for his ball and sent him back home. The boy flashed a toothy smile and said, “Thank you so much, sir. I’m looking forward.”

Sock-eater ants are made-up animals with the best intention ever.
“Ow!Ow!” I shouted as I broke my jump rope rhythm and trapped my feet in the loose rope. “Something in my shoe is biting me,” I screamed. My teacher, Miss Bell, heard me and hurried over. “Which foot is it?” she asked. I stuck up my right foot as she bent over to inspect it. Just then, feeling a new sting, I yelped in pain. “Here. Let’s take off your shoe.” Instructed Miss Bell, squatting down to get the shoe.
Then, I remembered the holes in my socks. Welfare socks didn’t last long. Holes in socks were common for our family in the years following the Great Depression. Socks with holes in the heels often got pulled down so the hole wouldn’t show. Where there was a hole, there would soon be a blister. Every week as she washed our clothes, Mama would say, “Even if we’re poor and our clothes are worn out, we can still be clean.”
I refused to let Miss Bell take off my shoe. I could not bear for her and the others on the playground to see the hole in my faded red sock. “Come on, then. Let’s go inside to the office.” I did my best to hold back my tears. Yet, each time the thing in my shoe stung me, I would let out aloud, “Oh, oh, oh!” Tears raced down my twisted face.
Miss Bell lifted me onto the desk and tried again. “Let me take a look.”She just about had the shoe off when I saw the hole. I grabbed the shoe and pulled on and held it. The stinging worsened the tighter I grabbed the shoe. Miss Womble, the fifth-grade teacher, came into the office. “Can I help? I know her. She lives next door to me.” “I guess ants are stinging her right foot, but she won’t let me take off her shoe,” said Miss Bell.

    4.(2023·云南红河·统考二模)阅读下面短文,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I remember the first time I got on a horse. I was two years old and we were watching a friend of the family ride. My mom agreed to let me take a short ride with the friend and that was it! I was horse crazy. From then on, I drove my parents insane begging for a horse.
When 1 was four years old, I had Selective Mutism (缄默症). This is a rare childhood disorder in which children stop speaking in certain social situations. I spoke normally to my parents, my brother and certain other people, but was silent at school and in social situations. I went days, weeks, months without a sound at school.
I suffered silently through school until I was ten years old when one in a long string of psychologists had an idea. One day I was asked by the psychologist what I wanted more than anything in the world. He explained that I was going to be given an opportunity to work for it. I couldn’t believe my good luck, but I could not answer. Finally. I was permitted to whisper the answer in my mother’s ear. “A horse.” was all I could say.
I was to get a little horse, but I had to live up to my end of the bargain. I had a chart of weekly tasks I had to accomplish. I had to answer the phone five times per weck, make five phone calls to my friends, say one word to my teacher at school and the list went on. For a child with Selective Mutism, saying one word to someone can be like climbing Mount Everest.
I did everything that was asked of me and the day came when my parents found a local riding stable that had the perfect pony. His name was Sequoia, so perfect that I fell in love with him immediately. We boarded him and I began taking lessons. It truly was a dream come true.

    The Joy of Giving
Someone once said,“To help the poor is to help yourself.” Perhaps, that person meant that helping those in need will later result in internal satisfaction. I usually never do community service before, but when I heard the opportunity to join my school’s service club, Interact, I put up my hand without hesitation. The opportunity to help people in need excited me and as I signed up to attend Saint Mary’s Food Bank, the urge of helping people made my body tremble.
As I walked after school to Mrs. Green, I could feel the palms(手掌)of my hands becoming wet by the minute. The water of my nerves ran down the side of my head and I could feel the tip of my shirt soaking(湿透)with fresh sweat. The clock ticked and I could feel the time of going to Saint Mary’s Food Bank getting closer. Ten minutes later the bus arrived-and we were on our way to the bank. On the way many things came through my mind. What was it going to look like? Will there be homeless people there, and will I enjoy my experience?
As I continued to explore my mind, the bus came to a stop.“We’re here,”said loudly the bus driver. I could feel the palms of my hands beginning to moisturize(变潮湿)once again. As I got off the bus, I fell into a deep doubt. This was the food bank? I had never seen anything like it. To my amazement, it reminded me of a place I would go in Mexico to feed the poor. It was brown, wide and had an old look to it. As we entered the bank as a group, the essence of it was very comfortable. I felt like I was home. Finally my nerves were gone, and I was ready to work. Before we started working, we were given instructions. But as soon as we finished our tour of instructions, the duty of service began.

My world was in a constant state of change and I was having trouble keeping up. Life with Mom, Dad, and my sister, Linda, had always been comfortable and fairly predictable. My grades were good, and Linda and I got on well. We played together and fought together, the way sisters do. As the older one, I was used to being told to set an example, which wasn’t too difficult, since Linda was only two years younger, and she usually wanted to do anything I did, anyway. Life was pretty good.
    Then the changes started coming.
First came a family meeting with surprising news that would change my world. We were moving. Our new home would be across the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, in another borough of New York City. We were leaving the only home I had ever known. Even worse, it would occur right before the beginning of sixth grade. Not only would I not be able to graduate from elementary school with my friends, but I would have to start middle school with a class full of kids who had known each other, and bonded, since kindergarten. Where would that leave me?
I spent the summer adjusting to a new neighborhood, literally being the new kid on the block. Making friends didn’t come easily to me, and it didn’t help being the eldest child of immigrant parents. I was different, and being different is the last thing any middle school student wants. The fear of starting a new school hung over me like a black cloud, damaging each summer day.
The first day of school arrived too quickly. I entered my new classroom trying very hard not to appear as scared as I felt, but it wasn’t easy. Twenty-eight faces turned to look up at me as I followed the Assistant Principal into the room. They all looked so cool, and some of the girls even wore make-up. How would I ever fit in? I was out of touch in every way possible. I wasn’t allowed to wear make-up or nail polish. Most of my clothes were handmade, sewn by my mother and grandmother.

How far would you go to help a friend? Jeremy Savage, aged 17, and Ian Marshall, aged 16, both from Canada, had their friendship tested to the limit on a recent trip to the Rocky Mountains with their parents.
On Saturday morning, the two boys decided to climb Cathedral Mountain by themselves while their parents relaxed at the campsite. After three hours, they reached the top and enjoyed the beautiful view from the mountaintop.
However, trouble began when they started the climb down. On one very dangerous part of the mountain, Ian fell three meters off the side of the path. Jeremy climbed down to where Ian was and found him badly injured and not able to move then. Jeremy had to decide what to do. He needed help but he did not want to leave his friend. He cleaned the dirt and blood from Ian’s face and hands, and then tried to help Ian stand up, but Ian’s right leg was hurting too much. With incredible calmness and his former experience in the mountain, Jeremy then gave Ian his food and water and let him lie on his jacket. They had to wait and hope that help would come. While they waited for help, Jeremy used his jacket and an extra shirt to keep Ian warm and they rested together. Sensing his friend’s pain and anxiety, Jeremy gently comforted him and gave him constant encouragement in a determined tone.
Meanwhile, as darkness started to fall, their parents back at the campsite became very worried that the boys had not returned. Desperate tears welling up in the eyes, the mothers frantically prayed to God for their sons’ safety. They got in touch with park workers and began searching for the boys. Soon more than 20 people were looking for them on Cathedral Mountain.

The incident took place at Cheektowaga, a town in Erie County, New York, in the middle of a historic and dangerous snowstorm. I had gone out to visit my friend living in another county, but unfortunately I got stuck and was unable to drive further.
I fully realized how dangerous this would be as there was not enough gas left in the truck for me to get through the deadly snowstorm. The situation got even worse in such a place without any houses in sight.
I stayed in my truck, calling for help anxiously but the weak signal didn’t help me get connected. There was nothing I could do but wait. At midnight, there came a knock outside the truck. I opened the door and surprisingly found an old lady standing in the storm with just a thin coat, clearly not enough to survive the snowstorm. I invited her to get inside my truck at once. She told me in a weak voice that her name was Mary and her car broke down. She had walked a long way before finding my truck.
Misfortune never came alone. Soon, we realized the air conditioner burned all the fuel in my truck and it was getting colder and colder inside the truck. Mary closed her eyes without saying a word, shaking in the corner. Considering Mary’s condition, I decided to take action right now. Luckily, the GPS of my truck still worked. And with the help of GPS, I noticed that a school was nearby. I decided to take shelter in the school. Since Mary was too weak to move, I carried her on my back, heading to the school. After ten minutes’ struggle in the snow, we finally arrived, but found the school gate locked.

It was now December twenty-fourth. So here we were, travelling about 2,000 miles and finally reaching our destination San Diego at last. We’d rented a room in a small, well-worn motel (汽车旅馆) near the beach.
Six-year-old Chat frowned. “There is no Christmas tree, Mommy! But It’s almost Christmas. How can Santa know where to put our presents without a Christmas tree?”
“Yes, a Christmas tree!” echoed (附和) his four-year-old brother Jay. “I want a Christmas tree!”
”Couldn’t we just get a small Christmas tree and set it up in this room somewhere?“ asked Chat. ”That way, Santa Claus will know where to put our presents.”
I sighed, looking around at our squeezed-in beds and bags. “But, honey, the five of us can barely move around in here with all our suitcases and everything. I’m sorry, but we just don’t have the room for something extra like a Christmas tree.”
Our oldest son, seven-year-old Robin, had been listening quietly. Suddenly, he grinned (咧嘴笑). “Yes, we do.”
    I stared. “Where?”
He pointed to our motel room’s door. “Right there—on the back of that door. Please, Mommy, if we can’t get a real tree, can’t we make a pretend tree and put it up there? Then Santa will know we love Christmas just as much as he does.”
“And leave us some presents, too!” Chat added.
Make a tree? I looked at the newspaper that I had bought when I was searching for places to rent. If I taped some of those pages together, cut them out into a tree shape, and bought some poster paint and brushes at the store next door…
Now, I was grinning, too. “Okay, boys! Ready to make the very best Christmas tree in the whole wide world?”
    “Yes!”

At the age of 17, I formed a band with three classmates. After we won the first prize at our school’s talent show, we decided to see if we could get some local performances. When we found out we’d gotten booked for a charitable event at a large hospital, we were excited. For two weeks, we practiced hard, getting together every day after school to sharpen our skills and learn enough songs to fill a one-hour show.
On the day of the concert, we showed up early to check out the stage. We set up and did a quick sound check, then went backstage lo have a soda and rest. While we were back there, the hospital’s entertainment director came over to talk to us.
“Okay, boys, I just want to fill you in on a couple of important details,” she told us. “A lot of the people in the audience are suffering from severe physical or mental disabilities. Also, many of them are very old. Don’t let that alarm you. They have very few chances to see live entertainment of any kind, so they enjoy any kind of musical talent. Just play your regular show, and you’ll do fine.” With that, she left, going to help the volunteers and staff that were assisting the patients to their seats.
Soon enough, it was showtime. Everything was perfect, and we played probably the best show of our lives. We hardly missed a note on any of our songs. Unfortunately, we couldn’t enjoy our performance. As each song finished, there was a short pause. This was the time when the audience would normally applaud. Now, we were getting nothing. Zero. The deafening silence only made us more determined to win the audience over. We tried harder. Loud songs, soft songs, it made no difference. After forty-five minutes, we decided to end our set early. Why bother finishing when no one was appreciating us anyway? We unplugged (拔去)our instruments and went backstage.

    1.       Dad signed to me to follow him. As we neared the back door, I saw my mom holding a handsome black dog with deep brown eyes. I was frozen like an ice cube. Then I ran to my dad, jumped in his arms and kissed him. My mom approached us and wrapped her loving arms around us, joining in our happy tears of joy. I had never been so happy in all my 9 years as I was at that moment. The dog named Sam was my only gift that year. But I got the best gift.
The memory of that Christmas stayed with me all these years. My best friend Sam lived to the old age of 16. I never had children. I am old and weak now and losing my eyesight, but I still have such precious memories of past Christmas with my family. I sit in my rocker on cold winter nights during the holiday seasons and picture my childhood home with its charming Christmas tree, old chimney and letters written to Santa.

All the fear, cold and even pain were seemingly driven away by the reunion with their parents. Jeremy and Ian burst into tears, sobbing out what had happened in this adventure. On the way to the hospital, Ian held on tight to Jeremy’s hand, saying,“I’ll always remember what you did for me. You saved my life.” Jeremy winked at him with a smiling face, “That’s the greatest thing that a person can do for his friend.”

8.Mary was still shivering and seemed to be in a worse condition. I had no choice but to find a way to break into the school. Fortunately, with the help of a snow shovel lying next to the gate, I managed to make it. I found the nearest classroom and laid Mary on one of the benches. I also found a pile of unused blankets and used them to wrap Mary up. I felt satisfied that I had done everything that I could to help her.
He came in to investigate. When he entered the classroom, he found me and Mary still asleep, wrapped in blankets. He woke us up and asked if we needed any help. I gratefully accepted his offer to drive us to the nearest gas station. I filled up my truck and made sure it had enough fuel to get me to my destination safely. As I waved goodbye to the policeman, I couldn’t help but think about how lucky I was to have Mary’s unexpected appearance that night. Without her, I might not have been able to survive the dangerous snowstorm.

9.So we bought some paint and then taped and cut and painted. 2 hours later, our DIY Christmas tree stood behind the door, with our handmade ornaments around it. Our boys folded their hands and began to pray. “Time for bed!” urged my husband, promising that Santa would definitely bring some presents to those who behaved well. Not until all of them fell asleep did we quietly take Christmas gifts from our suitcases, put them into the socks and placed the socks under the tree. Without dazzling lights and coulorful lights, it may not be the biggest or shiniest Christmas tree, but the primitive tree was the most special one to us.
The next morning, I heard, “Mommy! Daddy! Look! Santa did find us after all!” “Yeah, And Santa left us presents!” Then I found the three boys running to the Christmas tree eagerly and unbelievably, checking the presents in the socks. Considering our financial situation, what we could prepare for them were ordinary but practical. Exposed to the love of our family, I knew that this Christmas would be one that we would never forget. It wasn’t about the size of the tree or the price of the gifts, but the love and joy that we all shared together that made it truly special.

    10.参考答案
A moment later, the entertainment director ran back to us. She asked us why we didn’t finish the show as promised. We told her how embarrassed we felt when we played in front of complete silence. We also expressed our concern that they must dislike us. “What are you talking about?” asked the director, “I’ve been talking to them. They love you so much.” It turned out that they just didn’t know they were supposed to clap. Or they simply couldn’t do so due to severe physical or mental disabilities. All of us stared at her in disbelief, and we decided to keep our word and finish the show.
Returning to the stage, we played our final three songs. Finally, with the show over, we began packing up our instruments. We had still received no applause. However, as we were to leave, at least fifty people crowded onto the stage. All of them wanted to thank us; some shook our hands, and some surrounded us with a wide grin. Several told us that we were the best band that had played for them in years. We couldn’t believe it. We never felt as good as we did that one special night.
