    They say that “a picture is wrth a thusand wrds”, but the briefest lk at bks and the mvies based n them wuld have anyne questining this cmmn saying. All t ften, great wrds end up being turned int cinematic❶ “turkeys❷”.
    Gd mvies need gd stries. If s, why has ne f the earliest and greatest wrks in Western strytelling❸, Hmer’s The Odyssey, never had an equally great mvie based n it? Mvies need strng characters. S why have the mvies based n The Great Gatsby never been praised as “great”? Mvies f curse need impressive images, s why has Alice in Wnderland❹ nly resulted in mvies best described as “interesting”?
    One f the key reasns behind this is that while a bk usually takes a few days t read, a mvie typically lasts under tw hurs. This means that great bks can lse plt details and characters when they mve t the big screen. This is smething that even the highly successful Harry Ptter mvies can’t escape❺ frm, with fans f the bks disappinted❻ nt t see sme f their favurite characters in the mvie versins.
    Mvies als disappint us when things dn’t lk the way we imagined them in the bks. Take, fr example, the epic❼ mvie Try, which is in part based n Hmer’s The Iliad and was met with mixed reviews frm the audience. The mst questinable issue was the actress chsen t play the part f Helen. Many peple thught she didn’t live up t Helen’s title f “the mst beautiful wman in the wrld”, influencing pinins f the mvie t sme extent❽.
    There are a thusand Hamlets in a thusand peple’s eyes. Furthermre, bks and mvies are tw different frms f media and therefre have different rules. With this in mind, perhaps we shuld judge a mvie in its wn right, and nt against its riginal❾ surce. Interestingly, audiences have in recent years turned t televisin series such as Sherlck r Mad Men, which can have many characters and gradual plt develpment. Perhaps, ne day, readers f F. Sctt Fitzgerald’s mst admired wrk will find themselves glued t their screens by episdes❿ f The Great Gatsby.
