Step 1 Talk about sportsmanship
T:Good morning, boys and girls. Today we will talk about sportsmanship.First please look at the formation of the word
S1:The word is made up of three individual words. They are sports, man, ship.
T:In the word:“ship”doesn’t mean“a vehicle carrying passengers in water”;here it means“quality”.That means sportsman has good qualities.
S2:I see.For example,Mary is very friendly to her rivals. That means she has good sportsmanship.
Step 2 First listening
Listen to the conversation and match each opinion with the right speaker(Ex1 on page41)

Step 3 Second listening
Listen again and fill in the blanks with the words you hear, and then find out the expressions showing agreeing and disagreeing.
Cao Jing:I think she thought it was the right thing to do.It’s more important to help each other than to win.
Lily:______If someone falls during a race,that’s too bad.It’s just a part of the race.
Max:______If you have practised hard for the race,you should do your best to win.
Cao Jing:________Winning isn’t always the most important thing.

Step 4 Talking
Work in group, choose one of the situations below and make a conversation.
- A soccer player should not pretend to fall down even if it helps his/her team.
- In school teams, everyone should get a chance to play, not only the best players.
- It is wrong to pay people millions of yuan to play sports.
- Athletes should pay only for their own country.
EXAMPLE:
A:I agree with the idea that a soccer player should never pretend to fall down even if it helps his or her team.You should never cheat.
B:Exactly!It’s important to do the right thing.
C:Well,I don’t think so.Many players do it,and they think it helps their team to win.
A:That doesn’t make any sense!
B:I see what you mean,but the audience wants fair play.

Search for more information about sportsmanship on the Internet and prepare a short presentation to show your opinion on sportsmanship.
