Teaching aims:

1. Learn about Sarek National Park and summarize the main idea.

2.Experience a national park and use your senses to describe its beauty.

3. Share your ideas on the significance of setting up national parks and live in harmony with nature.

StepⅠ：Lead-in

Ask students questions:“What kinds of parks have you been toWhat were they like”Let several students share their ideas. Then show some pictures of different kinds of parks,such as, urban parks, national parks, amusement parks and public gardens.

StepⅡ Prediction

Ask students to look at the picture on page 25, and then predict what the text might be about. Teachers might start questions like this:What can you see from the picture?Where do you think the photo was taken? How do you understand the quote on the picture?

Suggested answers:

We can see beautiful scenery from the picture. The photo was taken in Yellowstone National Park. To paraphrase the quote:A national park is not a place for recreation,but is a place where nature is supposed to be protected. The people who go to the park will not do anything which harms or changes the park in any way from its natural state.

Step Ⅲ While reading

1.What's the main idea of the text?Read the the passage, write down the main idea of the whole passage and match the subheadings with the paragraphs.

Suggested answers:

The main idea of the text:The travel journal mainly tells us the beauty of Sarek National Park through the author's amazing experiences in the park.

2.Read for details——facts.

Ask students to read the text in detail and then answer the following three questions.

(1)How many hours a day does the sun shine in summer in Sarek?

(2)What steps has the Swedish government taken to keep Sarek in its natural state?

(3)How has life changed for the Sami ?Why might so few Sami want to live in Sarek?

Suggested answers:

(1)24 hours a day.

(2)It was made a national park. No one besides the Sami can live there,and new development is banned within park boundaries.

(3)Most Sami have houses in villages near Sarek and live modern lives. They might not want to live in Sarek because life conditions there are quite tough and inconvenient.

3. Read for details——feelings.

Ask students to find out the sentences in the text that show the senses of the author and then analyse the feelings of the author.

4.Complete the passage using the correct forms of the words

1. Yes. People can go there and appreciate the beauty of nature,and therefore better understand the importance of nature protection.

2.Yes,it is an effective way.Only a very small part of the world has been set aside for national parks, so there are still plenty of places that can be developed without having to touch the most beautiful and interesting natural sports.

3.The answer may vary.
