I created a writing group at my school this year, and it has become a hit among the students who enjoy writing.Let me share a few tips that you may use to start your own.
Set up separate groups for different grade levels,or ability levels.
You probably don’t want to mix a gifted eighth grader with a second grader who writes very little. In a small school,a group of two or three grade levels may work.In a larger school, you could have a beginner group, more advanced group, and publishing group.Members can move to more proper groups if they are not comfortable in the current one.
Advertise the group in different ways.
Ask your students to spread advertisements, put them on the school website,in the school newsletter(简报),and personally invite students who you think should come.
The first meeting should be very open.
At the first meeting, you should tell the students that this group is all about them.It is not a class, not a grade, not a requirement. Then tell them what writing groups are going to do,and ask what they would like to do.
Set up a time to meet once or twice a month.
It is necessary for students to bring their writing. The group could go in a number of directions:criticise each other’s work, read writing aloud, read silently, publish work in a booklet, publish online, play creativity games,or do an online chat with a published author.
It will take a little while to find out what works best for your group.
Search for creativity exercises, role plays, etc. You may set up a special bulletin board(告示牌) for your writing group. Not only do your students in the groups improve their writing interest but also they make more friends.
24.If you are a gifted high-level student in a large school you will probably .
A.be in the writing group with third graders
B.study writing skills in a beginner group
C.study writing skills in a less advanced group
D.study writing skills in a publishing group
25.From the text we learn that .
A.you are free to move to other groups if you like to
B.it is forbidden for one personally to invite students
C.advertisements can be put on the school’s walls
D.your writing group is in fact a class for students

Elizabeth Bishop, who was famous for the poetry AProdigal,FillingStation,Sandpiper,Manuelzinho and so on,was an influential American poet of the 20th century. Her poetry often shows things that concerned her throughout her life, such as her search for a sense of home. Her troubled childhood and the feeling of loneliness from this time affected her character and poetry.
Bishop’s painful childhood is obvious in some of her poems. Her father died when she was eight months old and her mother was mad when she was five.Bishop was raised firstly by her mother’s parents and then by her father’s parents. This experience left her confused about belonging. She had no home and this was shown in her poetry. In AProdigal, when the character in the poem makes his mind up to go home, there is a sense of pessimism (悲观) for Bishop who has no home. The lack of a sense of home has contributed to her depression (沮丧) all her life.
Bishop attempts to make small, everyday experiences extraordinary in her poems such as FillingStation. In FillingStation,Bishop describes the beauty of a family filling station.Although it is “dirty”,there is order in it.Simple family life is celebrated in it.She recognises the value of home and beauty in everyday life, but she is only an observer of these.Distance remains between her and the family at the filling station.
Bishop’s struggle to locate herself in the world is seen no more clearly than in Sandpiper. It deals with searching for something in a confusing world. She uses the metaphor (暗喻) of the bird which is “looking for something”.The “something” isn’t specific. It seems as if the bird doesn’t know what he wants;the only certain thing is that he is searching.
Bishop’s poems are personal on a more subtle level, especially when her childhood, travels, etc, are taken into consideration. It is believed that Bishop is a complex poet who uses her poetry to find this feeling of belonging.
28.What do we know about Elizabeth Bishop’s childhood?

B.She lived an unhappy life.
C.Her parents didn’t love her.

Steve was an amazing person in all of Minneapolis, and he was my cousin.By the age of 19,Steve was a baseball player at the University of Minnesota.I wanted to be exactly like him.So when Steve asked me to go with him on a spring fishing trip in northern Minnesota,I was excited!
After planning the trip,we gathered clothes and supplies, and began our great adventure. We reached the Superior National Forest in northern Minnesota by early evening. On our way to the campsite,Steve pointed to a small house far away in one of the mountains, saying that it was the ranger station (护林站) where the forester worked.
Finally, after a long walk,we reached the campsite and set up the camp as the sun was setting.Steve knew all the tricks of an experienced wilderness camper. After we gathered enough wood from the forest,he started the campfire using only stone and steel — no matches. For supper we feasted on freeze-dried beef, wild rice and pea soup.I ate greedily after all that work.
Tired enough,we climbed into our sleeping bags early and talked about our plans for fishing the next day.We were still talking quietly when a sudden north wind picked up;the temperature dropped and it began to snow.Steve found a way to increase the temperature inside the tent.He dragged a log (原木) from the forest to the opposite side of the campfire. Then he wrapped aluminum foil (铝箔) around the log.The heat from the fire reflected off the foil and into the tent.Soon images of lake fish were filling my dreams.
The snow had stopped, but sometime later a powerful wind must have kicked up the flames of our dying fire.I was abruptly awakened by Steve. Our tent was on fire.Frightened,I ran out of the tent immediately. The tent collapsed (倒塌) with Steve inside.Without any thought of endangering myself,I reached into the burning tent and pulled him to the icy lake.Fortunately,we were not seriously hurt.

Later, aswestoodbytheburningtenttokeepwarm, weconsideredourdifficultsituation. Our campsite was in the deep of the forest, really far away from the highway. We were in the middle of nowhere, wearing only underwear, with our supplies burnt into ashes, including our cell phones.Even Steve was unsure what to do next. The only thing we could do was just sitting in the cold air and wondering how to get out of the forest.
Suddenly, weheardanoiseintheforest.Anxiously we listened and stared into the darkness.A jeep appeared.A forester had spotted the light from the fire and had come to have a check. We jumped into the warm vehicle and the forester drove us to the ranger station, where we were given clothes and were able to call our parents.Steve and I had many more camping adventures from then on,but it was on this trip that Steve began to treat me more like a friend, rather than a younger cousin. Our friendship continues to this day.
