An Oceans Vacuum
There's a collection of plastic trash in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. It's bigger than Texas﹣and growing. The way to clean it up now is to catch it with nets. That is both costly and slow. Instead, the Ocean Cleanup Project proposes 62﹣mile﹣long floating barriers that would use natural currents to trap trash. If next year's trials succeed, a full cleanup operation would aim to start in 2020. It could reduce the trash by 42% over 10 years.
Easy﹣On Shoes
In 2012, Mathew Walzer, a high school student with a disability, sent a note to Nike. "My dream is to go to college," he wrote, "without having to worry about someone coming to tie my shoes every day." Nike assigned a design team to the challenge. This year, they came out with their solution: the FlyEase. The basketball shoe can be fastened with one hand. A pair of Nike FlyEase shoes sells for $130.
An Airport for Drones(无人机)
As Amazon, Google, and others get ready for drone delivery service, there is one big question: what kinds of home bases will their drones have? Rwanda, in Africa, may have the answer. There, workers will soon start work on three “drone ports”. The goal is to make it easier to transport food, medical supplies, electronics, and other goods through the hilly countryside. Construction is set to be completed in 2020.
21. What's the advantage of the Oceans Vacuum?
A. It can be a money﹣saver. B. It can grow year by year.
C. It can tear plastic into pieces. D. It can be put into wide use soon.
22. What do we know about Nike?
A. It offers free shoes to the disabled. B. It is designing new shoes frequently.
C. It provides customer﹣friendly services. D. It responded to Matthew's request passively.
23. Why is Rwanda setting up "drone ports"?
A. Because road travel there is rough. B. Because there are too many drones.
C. Because they're easier to construct than roads. D. Because they are receptive to new technology.
B
The connection between people and plants has long been the subject of scientific research. Recent studies have found positive effects. A study conducted in Youngstown, Ohio, for example, discovered that greener areas of the city experienced less crime. In another, employees were shown to be 15% more productive when their workplaces were decorated with houseplants.
The engineers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have taken it a step further—changing the actual composition of plants in order to get them to perform diverse, even unusual functions. These include plants that have sensors printed onto their leaves to show when they're short of water and a plant that can detect harmful chemicals in groundwater. "We're thinking about how we can engineer plants to replace functions of the things that we use every day," explained Michael Strano, a professor of chemical engineering at MIT.
One of his latest projects has been to make plants glow (发光) in experiments using some common vegetables. Strano's team found that they could create a faint light for three-and-a-half hours. The light, about one-thousandth of the amount needed to read by, is just a start. The technology, Strano said, could one day be used to light the rooms or even to turn trees into self-powered street lamps.
In the future, the team hopes to develop a version of the technology that can be sprayed onto plant leaves in a on-off treatment that would last the plant's lifetime. The engineers are also trying to develop an on and off "switch" where the glow would fade when exposed to daylight.
Lighting accounts for about 7% of the total electricity consumed in the US. Since lighting is often far removed from the power source—such as the distance from a power plant to street lamps on a remote highway—a lot of energy is lost during transmission (传输). Glowing plants could reduce this distance and therefore help save energy.
24. What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A. A new study of different plants. B. A big fall in crime rates.
C. Employees from various workplaces. D. Benefits from green plants.
25. What is the function of the sensors printed on plant leaves by MIT engineers?
A. To detect plants' lack of water. B. To change compositions of plants.
C. To make the life of plants longer. D. To test chemicals in plants.
26. What can we expect of the glowing plants in the future?
A. They will speed up energy production. B. They may transmit electricity to the home.
C. They might help reduce energy consumption. D. They could take the place of power plants.
27. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Can we grow more glowing plants? B. How do we live with glowing plants?
C. Could glowing plants replace lamps? D. How are glowing plants made pollution-free?
C
Coral reefs are some of the most diverse and valuable ecosystems on Earth. Coral reefs support more species per unit area than any other marine (海洋的) environment, including about 4,000 species of fish, 800 species of hard corals and hundreds of other species. Scientists estimate that there may be millions of undiscovered species living in and around reefs. This biodiversity is considered the key to finding new medicines for the 21st century. Many drugs are now being developed from coral reef animals and plants as possible cures for cancer, viruses, and other diseases.
Healthy coral reefs (珊瑚礁) support fisheries as well as jobs and businesses through tourism and recreation. About half of all managed fisheries depend on coral reefs and related habitats for a part of their life cycles. The National Marine Fisheries Service estimates the commercial value of U. S. fisheries from coral reefs is over $ 100 million. Local economies receive billions of dollars from visitors to reefs through diving tours, recreational fishing trips, hotels, restaurants, and other businesses based near reef ecosystems.
Coral reef structures also buffer shorelines against 97 percent of the energy from waves, storms, and floods, helping to prevent loss of life, and property damage. When reefs are damaged or destroyed, the absence of this natural barrier can increase the damage to coastal communities from normal wave action and violent storms. Several million people live in U. S. coastal areas near coral reefs. Some coastal development is required to provide necessary infrastructure (基础设施) for coastal residents and the growing coastal tourism industry.
Despite their great economic and recreational value, coral reefs are severely threatened by pollution, disease, and habitat destruction. Once coral reefs are damaged, they are less able to support the many creatures that live on them and the communities near them. When a coral reef supports fewer fish, plants, and animals, it also loses value as a tourist destination.
28. Why is biodiversity important to medicines?
A. It can reduce the prices of new medicines. B. It can help make new medicines.
C. It can be used for medicines. D. It can be used to cure diseases.
29. What does the underlined word “buffer” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. restore. B. clean. C. beautify. D. weaken.
30. What will happen if coral reefs are damaged?
A. Most fish will die out. B. Coastal cities will attract fewer tourists.
C. There will be no large fish. D. The sea will be polluted.
31. Why does the author write this article?
A. To introduce the environments of infrastructure. B. To encourage readers to support marine environment.
C. To show the importance of coral reefs . D. To stress the value of biodiversity.
D
Next week California will try to take cell phones from the hands of drivers, telling everyone from millionaires to workers that conversations behind the wheel must be on an earphone.
Californians interviewed by Reuters mostly supported the law requiring hands﹣free phones in cars and banning cell phones entirely for drivers under 18, which will take effect on Tuesday, though they were puzzled by a loophole(漏洞) that allows seemingly more dangerous text messaging. Some were doubtful about lawmakers, who they blamed for failing to build more freeways or public transportation in the face of increasingly crowded roads in the nation's most populous state and said hands﹣free conversations were not safer.
KFI﹣AM radio talk﹣show host John Kobylt told Reuters. "It's stupid because we've one over about seven different studies and each one of them says it's the conversation that distracts you, not holding the phone. "
State Senator Joe Simitian, who introduced the bill, said keeping both hands on the wheel was always safer. He expected his law to save hundreds of lives. The Democratic lawmaker was considering introducing a new law to ban text messaging in the car, which he said wasn't an issue when he began working on the first one in 2001.
Connecticut, New Jersey and New York have already banned drivers from talking on hand﹣held cell phones. In New Jersey, police have issued 35,000 tickets for using a hand﹣held phone or texting while driving since the law went into effect on March 1.
But Californians interviewed by Reuters expressed ambivalence. "On the one hand I don't want to see people crash into each other, but I'm not going to get an ear thing." 38﹣year﹣old bank employee Jason Fischer said in Los Angeles.
32. We can infer from Paragraph 2 that .
A. most Californians hate to use an earphone while making a call in the car
B. public transportation in California isn't developed enough
C. in New Jersey few people use a hand﹣held phone
D. most of Californians are probably against the new law
33. According to John Kobylt, .
A. all the lawmakers are stupid
B. holding the phone is safer than using an earphone
C. it isn't dangerous to make a phone call while driving
D. it is the phone conversation while driving that is really dangerous
34. What will State Senator Joe Simitian probably do in the future?
A. He will suggest a law to completely ban cell phones while driving
B. He will conduct a new survey among Californians
C. He will suggest building more roads in California
D. He will suggest a law to forbid text messaging while driving
35. The underlined word "ambivalence" in the last paragraph probably refers to .
A. a positive attitude B. a negative attitude C. a confused feeling D. an excited feeling
Every year, students across the U.K. engage in the annual ritual (仪式) of telling college and university admissions officers why they deserve a seat at the school of their choice. However, this task is filled with anxiety and fear. 36 This, of course, leads many to ask the question: How should I write an essay about myself for college? Here are tips to keep in mind.
37 For example, if all your friends are writing application essays about covid-19, that may be a good reason why you should avoid it. Unless, of course, you’ve had a vivid, life-changing experience that you are burning to share. Admissions counselors say that the best essays help them learn something about the candidate that they would never know from reading the rest of the application.
Keep your individuality in the spotlight. 38 What sets you apart from others? Tell your extraordinary story but remember not to oversell yourself. Your reader wants to see something personal about you, something that makes you stand out among others. Imagine how many applications the admissions committee reads per day, and think twice before writing some general information that doesn’t show your individuality.
Committees value authenticity. They want to hear your voice. This essay may give you the time and space to explain why a particular achievement means too much to you. But resist the urge to exaggerate: admission counselors read thousands of essays each year. 39
Sound like yourself. Don’t use words you wouldn’t normally use. Don’t use fancy language you wouldn’t use in real life. Imagine yourself reading this essay out loud to a classroom full of people who have never met you. 40 Be on the lookout for words and phrases like ‘maybe’ ‘sort of’ ‘I think’ or anything else.
A. They can spot something unreal.
B. This rule works in all the aspects of your life.
C. Writing about oneself can be highly stressful.
D. Keep a confident tone even if you’re not feeling that way.
E. Remember, it’s all about you rather than a fashionable subject.
F. An informative and powerful essay focuses on the readers’ needs.
G. Experts often recommend looking for something unique of your life story.

It all began when my younger brother, Chris, and 1 went over to Uncle Howard’s for Thanksgiving. When we finally got to my uncle’s, Chris and I went outside to see if Uncle Howard needed help with anything. Since Chris was only nine, he got the easier job of cleaning up the watering cans. I was twelve, old enough to help load the wheelbarrow (手推车). But we still found time to ask Uncle Howard a lot of questions about turkeys. He must have been impressed, because when we were finished, he winked at my dad and handed me one turkey egg.
“You kids put this under a hatching hen,” he said, “and in twenty-five days, you’ll have a fine turkey!” Chris was so excited that he nearly dropped the egg on the way home. Dad put the egg under an old hen, and every day Chris and I would check to see if it had hatched yet. Twenty-five days seemed like forever. Finally, on the twenty-sixth day, Chris and I walked into the coop (鸡舍) after school to find the old hen scratching on the floor. Behind her was one ball of fluff (绒毛), falling over its feet and looking sort of confusion. When it got older, we could tell that it was a tom. We named it Timothy.
Timothy grew and grew, dashing towards the feed we threw out. He liked to wander in the woods and find tasty berries and weed seeds. Mom kept telling us not to get too attached to Timothy, because we were going to have him for Thanksgiving. But we never paid too much attention to what that really meant.
Then, one day toward the end of October, Dad gave Chris and me instructions. “I want you to start giving him corn (玉米) along with his regular feed,” he said. “We want a nice, thick-fleshed bird for Thanksgiving.” After Dad turned and walked away, Chris's face began to wrinkle, just as it does before he starts to cry.
注意:
1.续写词数为150左右;
I comforted Chris, saying we could hide Timothy where people couldn't find him._____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

But it wouldn’t matter if you took part on your own. You’d soon make friends with other people there. Most of the people there were teenagers. We were a very international group in my team. Over half of the people there were from Australia, like me, but there were also people from China, Thailand and the USA. Most teams were working on the south coast of the country, but mine was working on the east. We had to pick up all the rubbish that we could find on the seaside. It has all made me realize how important it is for everyone to be aware of the environment. I’m determined now to get my family to recycle as much as possible. It’ll be worth it if we can make our seas safer for all those beautiful sea animals. So, if you’d like to join me taking part in this Day next year, it’ll be on January 11th. The focus on that day will be on getting rubbish out of rivers. There’ll be a day later in the year on cleaning up woodlands.

A 22. C 23. A
That is both costly and slow. Instead, the Ocean Cleanup Project proposes a 62-mile-long floating barrier that would use natural currents to trap trash.
Nike assigned a design team to the challenge. This year, they came out with their solution: the FlyEase.
The goals is to make it easier to transport food, medical supplies, electronics, and other goods through the hilly countryside可知,建立无人机机场,是因为这是个多山的国家,陆路交通不便利。
The way to clean it up now is to catch it with nets. That is both costly and slow. Instead, the Ocean Cleanup Project proposes a 62-mile-long floating barrier that would use natural currents to trap trash. If next year’s trials succeed, a full cleanup operation would aim to start in 2020. It could reduce the trash by 42 % over 10 years.

One possible version:
I comforted Chris, saying we could hide Timothy where people couldn't find him. It was not easy to break him out of his coop without catching the attention of our parents, though. For several days, we worked on an escape plan, and finally decided that we would build a small shack in the woods and keep Timothy there. One day, when Chris begged our parents to drive him to the mall, I took Timothy to the shack we had built and left with him enough water and food. When they came back, I told my parents, while sobbing, that a fox must have got Timothy because he was nowhere to be found.
With Timothy gone, Uncle Howard provided the turkey on Thanksgiving. My brother and I both felt very proud of ourselves after Thanksgiving. Had we done nothing, Timothy would have spent the holiday in our bellies. But at the same time, a sense of guilt came over us. We decided to be honest with our parents. After listening to our story, to our great surprise, dad wasn't angry. In-stead, he seemed to know that kids did crazy things when growing up. Not only were we not pun-ished, but also we were given the responsibility to take care of Timothy from that day on.
