For him, the sky’s the limit, but it wasn’t always that way.The 24-year-old college student was raised by a single father who worked three different jobs, breaking his back. But, despite his father’s best efforts, financial burdens steadily mounted. Staton’s study had suffered but he kept pushing himself forward. He said growing up was tough and he used to struggle in school. One teacher even suggested he switch to a special education class. But with help from a free tutor, Staton’s grades improved. He continued to improve academically while training to be a professional boxer in high school. However, his choices for college dwindled after suffering an injury, which ruined the chances of him turning professional in sports. He was rejected from every school he applied to.So to help support his family, Staton took a job collecting trash at a local sanitation company, which he said changed his life in ways he never imagined. “Most of my coworkers were formerly imprisoned. So, it caught me by surprise how much the people on the bottom of the society uplifted me and really wanted me to make something of myself,” he told the reporter. “They encouraged me to reapply to college. They had nothing but uplifting words for me and my future.”Through persistence, he took the LSAT and applied to nine schools—getting accepted to five. Ultimately, he decided to commit to Harvard Law School—and he’ll never forget all the people who helped him get there. “Throughout this time, people ask me, ‘How did you do it?’ It’s more so how could I not do it when everyone is breaking their backs for me, and pushing me to win.” Staton said. “When you have a support system, you want to give them your best shot. Toyota’s Plan for a “City of the Future”D. New Technologies for Smart Cities of the FutureDEvery day we experience one of the wonders of the world around us without even realizing it. It is not the amazing complexity of television, nor the impressive technology of transport. The universal wonder we share and experience is our ability to make noises with our mouths, and so transmit ideas and thoughts to each other’s minds. This ability comes so naturally that we tend to forget what a miracle(奇迹)it is.Obviously, the ability to talk is something that marks humans off from animals. Of course, some animals have powers just as amazing. Birds can fly thousands of miles by observing positions of the stars in the sky in relation to the time of day and year. In Nature’s talent show, humans are a species of animal that have developed their own special act. If we reduce it to basic terms, it’s an ability for communicating information to others by varying sounds we make as we breathe out.Not that we don’t have other powers of communication. Our facial expressions convey our emotions, such as anger, or joy, or disappointment. The way we hold our heads can indicate to others whether we are happy or sad. This is so-called “body language”. Bristling(直立的)fur is an unmistakable warning of attack among many animals. Similarly, the bowed head or drooping tail shows a readiness to take second place in any animal gathering.Such a means of communication is a basic mechanism that animals, including human beings, instinctively acquire and display. Is the ability to speak just another sort of instinct? If so, how did human beings acquire this amazing skill? Biologists can readily indicate that particular area of our brain where speech mechanisms function, but this doesn’t tell us how that part of our bodies originated in our biological history.32. According to the passage, the wonder we take for granted is _____.A. the miracle of technologyB. our ability to use languageC. the amazing power of natureD. our ability to make noises33. What can be inferred from Paragraph 3?A. Body language is unique to humans.B. Animals express emotions just as humans do.C. Humans have other powers of communication.D. Humans are no different than animals to some degree.34. What feature of “body language” is common to both humans and animals?A. Lifting heads when sad.B. Keeping long faces when angry.C. Bristling hair when ready to attack.D. Bowing heads when willing to obey.35. What’s the passage mainly about?A. The special role humans play in nature.B. The development of body language.C. The difference between humans and animals.D. The power to convey information to others.第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)根据短文内容,从短文后选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。The word “emoji” comes from Japanese, literally meaning “picture character”. __36__ They come in different categories, such as faces and people, plants and animals, and food and drink. When first introduced in Japan in 1999, emojis were limited to 176 simple designs. The intention of these adaptations is to make the classics more accessible to young readers. Some people, however, believe that these new versions have taken away the heart and soul of Shakespeare’s plays. As we can see, emojis have a tendency to pop up all over the place. Users of emojis say that they facilitate the way we communicate and express ourselves. But this makes others, especially educators, worry that we are losing the ability to communicate properly using the written word, or even the spoken word. After all, how many of us today would rather send a message packed with emojis than make a telephone call? __40__ On that day, emojis will have become a real pictorial “language”. But, for now, maybe it’s best that we just enjoy using them.A. Maybe emojis’ best days are ahead.B. The most popular emojis are absolute classics.C. The use of emojis has even spread to classical literature.D. Perhaps people will one day choose to communicate in pictures.E. It seems that emojis have clear advantages over written language.F. Emojis are small symbols representing ideas, emotions or feelings.G. Emojis can also help people express their feelings when they can’t find the appropriate words.第三部分 完形填空(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分)阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。When faced with a pandemic(流行病), people may become more forgiving. This was one more way for her to solve my strange problem---inability (没能力)to read.
In the library, I found my way into the “Children’s Room”. I pulled a few books off the shelf and sat down on the floor. The cover of a book caught my eye. It presented a picture of dog. I had recently had a dog, the first and only animal companion I ever had as a child. He was the one I could share secrets with, but later he was given away to someone who had space and money to care for him. I never forgot my dog.On the book’s cover, there was a dog which looked the same as mine. I figured the picture of the dog on the cover. My eyes ran across the little, Amos, the Dog with a Plan. Without opening the book, I borrowed it from the library for the summer.Under the shade of a bush, I started to read about Amos. I read very, very slowly with difficulty and got the main ides of the story about a dog who, like mine, had been separated from his family and who finally found his way back home. At the end of the story, my mind continued the final scene of reunion. When I finished my reading, a stream of tears ran down my cheeks. It was until then that I realized I had begun to overcome my inability to read. Thus, this was the very first book for me which I had read through and deeply immersed myself in the real scene.注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;2.请按如下格式作答My mother’s call brought me back to the real world and I suddenly realized something.__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Last year, my mother was so proud that her son was awarded a PhD in literature._______________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 唐尧中学2021-2022学年第一学期第二次月考高二英语试卷答案听力(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)1-5 ABCAC 6-10 BAACC 11-15 BCACA 16-20 BCBBA阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)21-23 DBC 24-27 BACB 28-31 BDCC 32-35 BDDD七选五(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)36-40 FEGCD完形填空(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分)41-55 CACDB ADBBC DDBCA语法填空(共10小题;每小题1.5分,满分15分)56. Today we’re going to look at the wide differences in family life between the rich and the poor in Victorian times. Let’s begin with the upper classes. In Victorian times, the upper classes made up less than 3% of the population, yet held more than 90% of the country’s wealth. Most of their servants were very poorly paid, but were always living in the homes of upper-class Victorian families, so they didn’t have to pay for housing, food and clothing. The money which they did earn, they sent to their families. Many servants came from the countryside. Among them were cooks, cleaners, gardeners and so on. The family would also employ a child’s nurse whose main role was to care for the children. She was responsible for teaching the children how to behave and taking care of them when they were ill. Nurses did not, however, educate the children. Generally, children from wealthy families didn’t attend school outside the family home. Tutors would come to the house to do this. Now, the Victorian upper classes have the reputation of being quite cruel; but this wasn’t always the case. They were also quite generous. Some schools were set up with money from the upper classes so that poor children could have some form of education. Additionally, most Victorian parents were very proud of their children. This goes against the common idea that parents were very strict with their children. In fact, the opposite was generally the rule. However, the situation for lower class families was very different. Let’s have a look.
