Many students want to know about the differences between American English and British English. How did these differences come about? There is no quick answer to this question. At first, the language in Britain and America was the same. In 1776, America became an independent country. After that, the language slowly began to change. For a long time, the language in America stayed the same, while the language in England changed. For example, 300 years ago, the English talked about “fall”. Today, most British people talk about “autumn”, but Americans still talk about “fall”. In the same way Americans still use the expression “I guess” (meaning “I think”), just as the British did 300 years ago.
At the same time, British English and American English started borrowing words from other languages, ending up with different words. For example, the British took “typhoon” from Chinese, while the Americans took “tornado” from Spanish.
In 1828, Noah Webster published the first American dictionary. He wanted to make American English different from British English, so he changed the spelling of many words. That's why the words colour, centre and traveller are spelt color, center and traveler in American English. Except for these differences in spelling, written English is more or less the same in both British and American English.
The differences are greater in the spoken language. For example, Americans says dance/dæns/, and in southern England they say/dɑːns/. In America they pronounce not/nɑt/; in southern England they say/nɔt/. However, most of the time people from the two countries do not have any difficulty in understanding each other.

When HarmonyOS, the Chinese selfdeveloped operating system for Huawei mobile devices, was released on Aug. 9, it quickly became a hot topic on social media. Many believe it not only represents the rise of the country as a tech power, but also shows respect to classical Chinese culture by naming the system “Hongmeng” in Chinese.
“Hongmeng” is a classical word from Zhuangzi. In the ancient times of Chinese legend and myths (神话), “Hongmeng” was used to describe the original state of the universe before matter existed. For HarmonyOS, “Hongmeng” indicates the developers' aim to make an innovative operating system, unlike any other.
Besides “Hongmeng”, Huawei has also registered many of its products under the names of legendary creatures from Chinese myths. For example, the company's Kirin mobile chip got its name after a lucky monster called “Qilin”. And its server chip is called “Kunpeng”, a creature that changed from a fish into a giant bird.
Many Chinese internet users and media have praised Huawei's use of these names, “as they stand for Chinese wisdom and ancient people's imagination and spirit of exploration”, Global Times noted.
In fact, Huawei is not alone in using traditional culture for modern ventures. Ne Zha, the new film, also portrays traditional culture in a modern context. The movie is loosely based on the wellknown work of classical Chinese myth The Investiture of the Gods. Earlier this month it became the biggest animated movie in China and was called “the glory of domestic anime (国产动漫)”.
Indeed, the long history and splendid classic works have given China a profound culture. Myths and legends are the creative works of tremendous imagination. As Global Times put it, today by revisiting a modern context, “ancient myths has the power to inspire imagination in young people”. After all, imagination is the beginning of creation.

How old are the apps on your smartphone? Is it time for an update? Here are three apps for you. Try them out and have fun.
Duolingo
Learning a foreign language doesn't always mean you have to sit in a class and take endless exams. An app called Duolingo has been designed to help you memorize new words and grammar in creative ways, such as online lessons, games and interesting exercises. For example, one exercise asks you to put words in the right order to make the correct sentence. You can also try translation practice.
Douban FM
A music app is a necessity for almost every smartphone now. Douban FM might be the right thing for you. There is no playlist on Douban FM—songs just keep streaming (播放) one by one. You can use the “heart” “trash” and “skip” buttons (按钮) to mark the songs you like, don't like and want to cut short, respectively (分别地). Those marked with a heart will be stored in another list as your favorites for you to listen to anytime you want. Douban FM also has different channels (频道). There are many types of music, such as blues, jazz, and pop. You can choose the music for outdoor activities, work or studying depending on your mood.
It is one of the hottest news apps right now. With Flipboard, you can make everything personal to you. All you have to do is open up the app, “flip through” to select whatever interests you, and click the “+” button. At the end, you'll have your own magazine, complete with a front page, new articles, and information.

I start every summer with the best of intentions: to attack one big book from the past, a classic that I was supposed to have read when young and ambitious. Often the pairings of books and settings have been purely accidental: “Moby Dick” on a threeday crosscountry train trip; “The Magic Mountain” in a New England beachside cottage with no locks on the doors, no telephones or televisions in the rooms, and little to do beyond row on the salt pond. Attempting “The Man Without Qualities” on a return to Hawaii, my native state, however, was less fruitful: I made it through one and a quarter volumes (册), then decided that I'd got the point and went swimming instead.
But this summer I find myself at a loss. I'm not quite interested in Balzac, say, or “Tristram Shandy.” There's always War and Peace, which I've covered some distance several times, only to get_bogged_down in the “War” part, set it aside for a while, and realize that I have to start over from the beginning again, having forgotten everyone's name and social rank. How appealing to simply fall back on a favoriteonce more into “The Waves” or “Justine,” which feels almost like cheating, too exciting and too much fun to properly belong in serious literature.
And then there's Stendhal's “The Red and the Black,” which happens to be the name of my favorite cocktail (鸡尾酒) of the summer, created by Michael Cecconi at Savoy and BackForty. It is easy to drink, and knocking back three or four seems like such a delightful idea. Cecconi's theory: “I take whatever's fresh at the green market and turn it into liquid.” The result is a pure shot of afternoon in the park, making one feel cheerful and peaceful all at once, lying on uncut grass with eyes shut, sun beating through the lids ...

13.What do the underlined words “get bogged down” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Get confused. B.Be carried away.
C.Be interrupted. D.Make no progress.
答案:D 词义猜测题。根据句中的“covered some distance several times”和“set it aside for a while”及读后的结果“having forgotten everyone's name and social rank”可知,作者在读“战争”部分时,几次合上书,把书放一边。句中画线短语“get bogged down”指的是“陷入困境,停滞不前,没有进展”。与make no progress同义,故选D。
14.Why does the author say reading his favorite books feels like cheating?
A.He finishes them quickly.
B.He should read something serious.
C.He barely understands them.
D.He has read them many times before.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
The main benefit you get from studying abroad is independence. I feel great to know that you can manage on your own when necessary. This ability gives you more freedom as well as tolerance (宽容). After moving abroad you have to start a totally new life. Setting in a new environment is a big challenge for you, but you have to keep in mind that it is only a small part of studying abroad, and experiences like these can help you build your character and understand the world better.
When I went abroad I knew that I had to find a job and learn to handle my finances myself. I did not have a choice. I had to manage on my own. I found a job as a mail carrier for the local newspaper. Not all my costudents were as lucky as me in finding a job right away. You have to keep in mind that besides working you have to attend lectures and do your homework. Carrying mails was not always an easy job, but thanks to it I got to know many nice people and saw the town and local people from a different view.
Besides looking for a job, I also had to find a place to live in and take care of everyday chores (杂务) from cooking to doing the laundry. When you have only begun with your independent life, this can be quite a challenge. You don't have experience, nor does anyone give a helping hand—you're on your own. So it might happen that the first potato you fry ending up darker than intended, but from that on, you can only do better.
All the trials (磨炼) you go through increase your independence, teach you a lesson and give you a wonderful experience to manage in complicated situations in the future. Learning in a new environment and taking full responsibility for yourself make your time abroad quite extraordinary.
