Rebecca Williams, 42, from Australia, has been doing dubbing (配音) work in Beijing for many years. When she was very young, she would unconsciously imitate (模仿) other people’s voices, not to make fun of them, but more out of habit. “My voice has always been very changeable, depending on who I’m talking to,” she said. She never expected this habit to land her a dubbing job in China in the future.
At 18, Williams was an exchange student at the University of the Nations in Hawaii, the U.S. Like most new adults, she was thinking about what to do with her life. Then, a group of exchange students from China visited the school. “They were sharing everyday life in China. As they were talking, something inside me got lit on fire,” she said. At that time, she realized her future would lie in China.
After graduation, Williams came to China and got into dubbing by chance. At this point, she has dubbed for nearly 100 English teaching films, TV shows and movies. Williams has cooperated with the Star Times. The Star Times has a TV network in more than 30 African countries. Most of the TV shows she has dubbed for are shown in African. “I think it’s a really great way to bridge cultures, to allow people abroad to watch some of the plays that Chinese people watch, and have a better understanding of Chinese life, but in a language they can understand,” Williams said.
Williams has lived in China for twenty years. She used to visit Australia once every two years. Luckily, there’s no time difference between her hometown of Esperance and Beijing. And thanks to advanced mobile networks, she can just pick up her phone and video chat with her family whenever they feel like it. “That helps me a lot,” Williams said.
Williams has become more and more at home in China and she sees China as her second hometown.

    4. Why did Williams imitate other people’s voices?
    A. It was her usual behavior. B. She expected to find a dubbing job in China.
    C. She enjoyed showing her unique talent. D. She did it just to make fun of them.
    5. How did Williams feel when hearing about everyday life in China?
    A. Embarrassed. B. Bored. C. Excited. D. Confused.
    6. What does Williams think about the dubbing job?
    A. It calls for teamwork. B. It’s helpful to cultural exchanges.
    C. It’s more attractive to foreigners. D. It requires a set of excellent skills.
    7. What’s the main idea of paragraph 4?
    A. Williams’ connection with her family.
    B. Williams’ plans for the next few years.
    C. Williams’ best wishes to her hometown.
    D. Williams’ addiction to the mobile phone.

    C
Chinese students are increasingly looking to the United Kingdom as their favourite study destination, despite lockdown caused by the pandemic over the past three years. Education experts believe that this trend will only continue to grow in the coming years.
By the end of June, 31,400 students from China had submitted applications to undertake higher education in the UK this autumn, a surge of 29 percent from 2020, according to data from the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service.
Roger Sinnett, a Sino-UK education expert, said to China Daily, “The UK has always been a safe place for study, with its rich multicultural environment providing good preparation for an international future.”
Out of safety concerns, Sinnett said, the United States is losing ground as the great desired country for Chinese students.
“After two-and-a-half years down the line, as more Chinese students got a taste of the time-saving one-year master and three-year bachelor degrees, the UK has finally become irreplaceable in some Chinese students’ minds,” Susan Fang, founder of educational consultancy OxBridge, said to China Daily.
Fang said UK universities have been fortunate in a way because the increase in Chinese students made up for the losses from the falling demand from European students following Brexit (脱欧).
William Vanbergen, founder of BE Education in Shanghai, an international education services provider, told China Daily that he thinks building bridges with China and creating a better understanding between the two countries can only be a good thing. “The friendships formed by students studying and living together over several years help to increase mutual understanding across cultures,” he said.
Sinnett added, “China achieved much across the centuries by absorbing various cultures into Chinese society. In a similar way, one of the strengths of the UK university system is that they are well aware of external influences and pressures, from whichever direction they come.”

    8. What do the underlined words “a surge” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
    A. A sudden increase. B. A rapid drop.
    C. A large number. D. A written record.
    9. Why do more Chinese students choose to study in the UK, according to Susan Fang?
    A. Because they like the multicultural environment.
    B. Because it is easier to apply to study in the UK.
    C. Because it takes them less time to get a degree.
    D. Because fewer EU students compete with them.
    10. What is Vanbergen’s attitude to the increasing interest in British universities?
    A. Worried. B. Positive. C. Critical. D. Indifferent.
    11. What can we infer from Sinnett’s opinion about China and the UK?
    A. They both welcome different cultures.
    B. They both have an advanced university system.
    C. Their universities are subject to external situations.
    D. Students from both the countries are under great pressure.

    D
In New York City public schools, 176 different languages are spoken among the more than 1 million students. For 160,000 children, English is not their first language. New York’s Department of Education makes learning better for these students by providing dual-language (双语) programmes.
Students are taught in two languages, English and another one, like Russian or Chinese. Maths, social studies, science and all other regular courses are taught in both languages so that they could learn about the culture of the other countries.
Milady Baez is Deputy Chancellor of English Language Learners and Student Support. She says, “The jobs of the future require that our students know more than one language. They are going to be travelling abroad; they are going to be communicating with people from all over the world. This will open doors for them.”
Middle-schoolers might not have jobs on their minds yet. For Kequing Jaing, she likes keeping up her first language, Mandarin. “It makes me feel that I am home because I can speak in Chinese and learn in Chinese, while learning in English. So it makes me feel better and makes me understand more about the task I’m learning.”
Anastasia Hudikova came to the United States when she was two years old. She says the Russian-English programme keeps her connected to her heritage and her parents.
The New York schools also offer dual-language programmes in seven other languages: Arabi, French, Haitian Creole, Hebrew, Korean, Polish and Spanish. There are plans to add even more languages in the future. While these dual-language programmes are popular, educators in the US say that teaching English comes first. Anyway English is the official language of the United States. Studies show that children who learn English early will be more successful later.

    12. Why are many courses of public schools in New York City taught in both languages?
    A. To get the students to know about the cultures of other countries.
    B. To encourage more students to go abroad to study further.
    C. To attract more students to study in the public schools.
    D. To show the advantages of studying in the public schools.
    13. How does the text introduce the fact that it’s important to learn different languages?
    A. By making comparisons. B. By listing people’s attitudes.
    C. By making the situation clear. D. By giving some numbers.
    14. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
    A. More languages have been added to the New York City schools.
    B. It’s unnecessary to learn more languages in New York City.
    C. English should be a must though different languages are taught.
    D. English is spoken by the largest number of people in the world.
    15. What is the best title of the passage?
    A. English, Out of Date?
    B. The Newest Fashion in New York City
    C. The Education in New York City
    D. Dual-language, to Be or Not?

For you who dream of studying abroad, you’re probably thinking it’ll be an easy transition. From my personal experience, I can tell you that it is much fun, but certainly not easy. In fact, there are many challenges of studying abroad. 1
You may feel like an outsider. Regardless of what country you’re going to, you may find yourself wondering why everyone’s laughing when you don’t realize someone has told a joke.
2 Actually everyone I’ve ever met while studying abroad has been very friendly. Though I may never become truly “one of them”, finally this problem becomes smaller and smaller.
You have to overcome the language barrier. Even if you’re studying in a country where you speak the same language, there are still strong local accents and slang (俚语) phrases to clear.
3 However, the language barrier problem also goes away pretty quickly.
4 When something seems to go against you in a foreign country, you can really feel on your own. Your family and friends will be hundreds or even thousands of miles away. This challenge is likely to be felt most especially true in the first few months. But then, you’ll make new friends and after a year or so, everything will be OK!
There are cultural misunderstandings for you to deal with. As a foreigner, you don’t know the local culture. 5 Don’t worry; you can avoid cultural misunderstandings by observing what others do and how they do it. If there’s any doubt, just ask! You’ll find most people are happy to talk about their customs.

    A. Don’t let this discourage you.
    B. You’re far from your support network.
    C. You’ll make mistakes, and many may be embarrassing.
    D. Living abroad is wonderful when everything is going well.
    E. So the words students use are going to be difficult to lean.
    F. You should know that you can work out the problem by yourself.
    G. Here are some of them that you need to overcome for your further study.

G选项“Here are some of them that you need to overcome for your further study.”的them指代上一句中的“many challenges”。
A“Don’t let this discourage you.” 故选A。
E“So the words students use are going to be difficult to learn.”
B“You’re far from your support network.”
C“You’ll make mistakes, and many may be embarrassing.”

    Dear Editor,
After reading some opinions on whether studying abroad is good idea or not, I’m interested in it. From my perspective, I subscribe to the idea that studying abroad is good.
To begin with, studying abroad can broaden our horizons and enhance multiple abilities, such as mastering a language and communicating with people. The valuable experience can help us reach greater heights in our lives. Also, it has a positive influence on promoting cross-cultural cooperation and mutual understanding. We have a chance to act as ambassadors of friendship between different cultures and peoples. Finally, studying abroad enables our rapidly developing country to have a group of pioneers with global vision that are greatly needed in a variety of fields.
To sum up, studying abroad has a bright and promising future to look upon, and I am for the idea of studying abroad.
    Yours,
    LiHua
