In this sectin, yu are ging t:get sme basic infrmatin abut vlunteeringunderstand the passage abut vlunteering in Papua New Guineaknw abut the educatin and living cnditins in less develped areasincrease the awareness f the imprtance f helping thers
    1. What d yu think is happening in the pht?2. Think abut the things yu d t help ther peple. Write them dwn and share with yur partner.3. Share yur experiences as a vlunteer, if yu have any.
    1. What d yu think is happening in the pht?Sme yung peple in Africa are enjying water at a new well which was prvided by China.2. Think abut the things yu d t help ther peple. Write them dwn and share with yur partner.I help at schl by cleaning the classrm and picking up rubbish n the schl grund. I help thers farther away by dnating sme pcket mney t the Red Crss Sciety f China regularly.3. Share yur experiences as a vlunteer, if yu have any.I spent a summer vlunteering t help feed hmeless peple. It was a wnderful but busy time. Thugh the wrk was quite hard, I felt gd abut my cntributin t sciety and my rle in helping thers.
As yu grw lder, yu will discver that yu have tw hands, ne fr helping yurself, the ther fr helping thers. —— Sam Levensn
Time Tested Beauty TipsFr attractive lips, speak wrds f kindness.Fr lvely eyes, seek ut the gd in peple.Fr a slim figure, share yur fd with the hungry.Fr beautiful hair, let a child run his r her fingers thrugh it nce a day.Fr pise, walk with the knwledge yu’ll never walk alne.Peple, even mre than things, have t be restred, renewed, revived, reclaimed, and redeemed; never thrw ut anybdy.Remember, if yu ever need a helping hand, yu will find ne at the end f yur arm. As yu grw lder, yu will discver that yu have tw hands, ne fr helping yurself, the ther fr helping thers.
A yung Australian, J, wrked fr tw years as a vlunteer teacher in Papua New Guinea. What challenges d yu think she might have faced?
It wuld be hard t get used t living withut a TV, cmputer, r ther mdern cnveniences. The fd and verall lifestyle might als be a challenge, as it is s different frm her cuntry. As a teacher, getting gd teaching materials and supplies wuld als be hard.
Read the blg entries by J. As yu read, underline the parts f the text yu read slwly. Then cmpare yur reading pace with a partner.
Adjust reading speedWhen reading a passage, adjust yur speed t get the mst ut f it. If the material is easy r familiar, yu can read thrugh it quickly. If it is difficult r cntains useful details, read it a bit slwer and try t understand mre.
Reasns why smene wuld read sme parts f a passage mre slwly than thers:It cntains wrds and cncepts that are mre difficult t understand. It is packed full f detailed infrmatin. The language is beautiful r enriching and the reader may want t savur the enjyment f reading it.
    1. What des J mainly talk abut in her blgs? Her experience f vluntary teaching at a bush schl and a visit t a lcal family, the challenges she met, and the psitive aspects f her vluntary wrk. She als shared her feelings and attitudes t her vluntary wrk, the peple, and the life there.2. Where was J in her tw blgs and what were the places like? At the bush schl and the hme f ne f her students. The classrms were made f bamb, with clay flrs and rfs f grass. The student’s huse was a lw, rund bamb hut withut windws, with a dr just big enugh t get thrugh, and with grass sticking ut f the rf. The huse was dark inside, with fresh grass laid n the flr and a platfrm t sleep n.
Divide the tw blgs int several parts and wrk ut the main ideas.
VOLUNTEERING IN THE BUSH8 MarchI just gt a parcel frm hme! It tk abut tw weeks t arrive, and it was a bit damaged, but it was s nice t get sme sweets and jam frm hme; I’ve been dying t have sme f my favurite sweets, and it’s always nice t get mail!S I’ve been here in the jungle fr abut a mnth nw. My secndary schl is a bush schl. The classrms are made f bamb, with clay flrs and rts f grass. It takes me nly a few minutes t walk t schl dwn a dusty track cvered in weeds. When I reach the schl grunds, I’m greeted by a chrus f “gd mrning” frm the bys. Unlike students in ur cuntry, these bys d nt wear cttn unifrms, and many f them als have t walk a lng way, smetimes fr up t tw hurs, just t get t schl.
There’s n electricity, running water r even textbks, nt t mentin laptps, tablets, r ther mdern devices! All the students have are pencils, rubbers, and paper. I’m still trying t adapt t these cnditins. I’ve had t becme much mre imaginative in my teaching. Science is my mst challenging subject as my students have n cncept f ding experiments. There is n equipment, and since there isn’t even a washrm, if I need water I have t carry it frm my huse in a basin! It’s imprtant nt t be t rigid abut rules here, t. The ther day I was shwing the bys a chemistry experiment when, befre I knew it, the mixture was bubbling ut f the test tube spilling everywhere! The class became a circus as the bys, wh had never cme acrss anything like this befre, started jumping ut f the windws. Smetimes I wnder hw relevant chemistry is t these students—few will ever becme chemists—and mst will be ging back t their villages after Year 8 anyway. T be hnest, I dubt whether I’m making any difference t these bys’ lives at all.
    1. Hw did J feel when receiving the parcel frm hme?She was excited t receive the parcel. 2. Which expressin shws her feeling?... it was s nice t get sme sweets and jam frm hme I’ve been dying t have sme f my favurite sweets, and it’s always nice t get mail!3. Why wuld J feel that way? What can yu infer frm the reasns?Because she is expecting the parcel and eager t receive it. It reflects the incnvenience f transprtatin and express delivery, as well as the lack f essential supplies.
    1. What des the schl lk like?
    2. Hw des the students impress J?
    cttn unifrms
    running water
    mdern devices
    equipment fr experiments
    electricity
17 AprilLast weekend I made my first visit t a remte village, hme t ne f ur students, Tmbe. Anther teacher and I walked fr tw and a half hurs t get there—first, up a muntain frm where we had fantastic views, and then dwn a shaded path t the valley belw. When we arrived at the village, Tmbe’s mther, Kiak, saw us cming and started crying “ieee ieee”. We shk hands with all the villagers. Everyne seemed t be related t Tmbe.Tmbe’s father, Mukap, a man with a strng jaw and a wrinkled frehead, led us t his huse, a lw, rund bamb hut with n windws, with a dr just big enugh t get thrugh, and with grass sticking ut f the rf—this shws it isa man’s huse. Such husing is dark inside s it tk time fr ur eyest adjust. Fresh grass had been laid n the flr and there was a platfrm fr Jenny and me t sleep n. There was a fireplace in the centre f the hut. The nly pssessins I culd see were ne brm, a few saucers, a kettle, cups, pans, and a cuple f jars.
Mukap built a fire utside and laid stnes n it t heat. He then placed the ht stnes in an empty il drum with kau kau (sweet ptat), ripe crn, and greens. He then cvered the vegetables with banana leaves and left them t steam. It smelled delicius. We ate inside the hut sitting rund the fire. I lved listening t the family talking sftly t each ther in their language, even thugh I culd nt participate much in the cnversatin. Luckily, Tmbe interpreted fr us. Later, I nticed a can standing upside dwn n the grill ver the fire. After a while, Tmbe threw it ut f the drway. Tmbe tld me that the can was heated t dry ut the leftver fd. His family believes that leftvers attract bad spirits in the night, s any leftver fd is dried up in a can and the can is then thrwn ut f the hut.We left the village the next mrning after many gdbyes and firm handshakes. My muscles were aching and my knees shaking as we dragged urselves dwn the muntain twards hme. That evening I fell happily int bed. It was such a privilege t have spent a day with Tmbe’s family.
    tw and a half hurs
    Tmbe’s life

Althugh the husing and furnishings there are very simple, yet their relatinships are harmnius and the villagers are very enthusiastic.

What did J ntice abut the hmes in the village she visited? They were lw, rund bamb huts with n windws, with a dr just big enugh t get thrugh, and with grass sticking ut f the rf.4. What did J ntice after the meal?A can standing upside dwn n the grill ver the fire.5. What is J’s general impressin f the place and peple there? She lved being there and felt it was a privilege t have spent a day with them.
Analyse J’s impressins f life in the village she visited.
In grups, discuss these questins.1. J felt it was a privilege t have spent a day with Tmbe’s family. If yu were J, hw d yu think yu wuld have felt? Why?I wuld have felt privileged as well, as it was a rare chance t glimpse int anther culture that mst peple will never have.2. What are the differences between the schl yu g t and the ne described in the passage?I g t a schl that has all the cnveniences f mdern sciety, s there is n cmparisn at all. We have plenty f equipment and supplies, cmfrtable chairs, air cnditining, cmputers, etc.3. Wuld yu like t becme a vlunteer teacher? Why r why nt?I think it wuld be interesting t d that fr a while. It wuld be a gd pprtunity t make a difference t smene else’s life, and als t learn abut a new culture.
