Sheep are stupid, right? At least that's what people believed for a long time. However, our opinions on the IQ of sheep have changed. It is found that sheep are surprisingly clever. In fact, they have an IQ level similar to that of cows and chickens and a little below that of pigs.
Sheep can recognize (辦别出) colors and shapes. They have some level of object permanence. This means
that if you cover up food in front of a sheep, the sheep knows the food is still there, even though it can no longer see the food. By comparison, human babies don't develop object permanence until around 8 months old.
Sheep are also very good at recognizing different faces. Their sense of sight allows them to recognize photos of sheep and other animals. And the ability to recognize faces extends to humans as well. They are able to recognize their owners, including in photos.
They can also use their sense of smell to learn about the world around them. This helps sheep find favorite foods and tell foods that may make them sick. A sheep can also use its sense of smell to tell the sheep it knows from strangers.
Part of what makes sheep so clever is their social interaction (社交). These animals can use different sounds to communicate different things, just like people, cats, dogs, and pigs do. Sheep are born with the ability to learn from watching others. For example, baby sheep that have never been bottle fed learn it quickly after watching others being fed.
All in all, sheep are far more clever than we thought. Science is improving our knowledge of sheep and their ability to learn.
48.Which of the following animals has the highest IQ according to the passage?
A. B. C. D.
49. Which shows that a baby has developed object permanence?
A. He divides his favorite toys into several groups. B. He recognizes his favorite toys by their shapes.
C. He uses his hands to touch and feel different toys. D. He knows his toy is in a box even if he can't see it.
50. What does the underlined part “extends to” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Include. B. Guide. C. Carry. D. Touch.
51. What does Paragraph 5 mainly talk about?
A. Sheep's communication skills are similar to those of us.
B. Watching others is a good way for animals to learn.
C. Sheep's social interaction makes them bright animals.
D. Sheep's natural ability to learn helps keep them alive.

Yesterday my son Bill was sick. I picked up his sister Anna from school and decided to run to the supermarket for a few things. I had hoped to finish my shopping in a hurry and then went back home as quickly as possible.
I found just one person ahead of me and began organizing my things. After that, I looked up to see that the
person ahead of me was an elderly woman. She was paying for her things with change slowly. I watched the young employee (员工) helping the woman count her change and so carefully taking it from her shaking hands. Then I heard him repeatedly saying “yes, Madam” to her. When she asked if she had enough to buy a bag, he told her she did and went two lines over to get one for her, patiently.
As I was watching him, I saw that Anna was, too. She was standing next to the woman, watching the employee count the change. I realized I had forgotten to leave in a hurry. And my daughter was being taught the valuable lesson by a complete stranger. When the woman finished, the employee thanked me for my patience. I then thanked him for teaching us patience and kindness by his treatment of that elderly woman.
We may find a lot of things which move us all through our life. Just slow down, and we can enjoy the surprises that life brings us.

Reading people's mind seems to be a supernatural power that can only be seen in movies. But scientists have made it possible to translate people's brain waves!
Researchers at the University of California developed a new device (设备). It can turn brain waves into words on a screen in front of the users. In the study, they tested it on a disabled man.“To our knowledge, this is the first successful show of direct decoding (解码) of full words from the brain of someone who is disabled and cannot speak,”said Edward Chang, one of the researchers of the study. Each year, many people lose the ability to speak because of accidents or diseases. With up to 93 percent of accuracy, the new device shows “strong promise” to let these people fully communicate in the future.
One problem with such mind-reading machines, however, is that electrodes (电板) are needed to be put into people's brains. ▲ But scientists from another university have taken steps to change this. They tried to translate people's thoughts without even touching their heads. The new technology is called FMRI. It's a safer way of " reading" brain activity. Active brain cells have more oxygen. Scientists can translate brain activity with the help of it.
The team asked the people who took part in the study to listen to 16 hours of radio shows while their brains were scanned. Then they used a computer algorithm (算法) to create a story based on the FMRI recording. It matched the radio shows pretty well. In other tests, the algorithm could basically explain the story of a silent movie that people watched. It could even retell a story that people imagined in their heads. Although it's not a word-for-word translation, the technology provides many possibilities.
56.The underlined word " they" refers to______
A. brain waves B. the users C. the researchers D. the devices
57. Which sentence can be put in the ▲ ?
A. It's not convenient and has health risks B. It's expensive and people can't buy it in many places
C. It can read people's mind faster D. It's smaller in size and hard to put in people's brain
58. What is the best structure of this passage?
A. B. C. D.
59. What's the purpose of writing the passage?
A. To show us that technologies can read your mind now.
B. To suggest that all disabled people should do more research.
C. To tell us that translation technology still needs time to develop.
D. To let people know about a new computer algorithm.

“Lying down” (also known as tang ping), has become a hot word among young Chinese people these days. The idea of low material needs and being willing to accept whatever life gives them is described as a “lying down” lifestyle.
Some young people complain that to raise a child needs too much money and they often get into a fight with their family. At the same time, the rising living costs including food and housing have pushed them so hard that they could hardly breathe. Some want to lie down because their tiring jobs, competition with peers, as well as personal relationships force them to run away.
On the other hand, with the great improvement of living conditions, it is true that some Chinese youth today have lost the spirit of fighting hard for a better life. “I stay at home, sleep and watch TV series, and I’m pleased with what I have now. Actually, there are many people around me who value happiness and freedom most,” said Daisy, who left her job two weeks ago. No wonder that some young people would choose to live a simple way instead of always following the good quality of fighting hard.
Interestingly, most young people, who are “big fans” of the “lying down” lifestyle, point out that they only accept a temporary (暂时的) lying down as a short rest. In fact, lying down is not totally comfortable for them. Most young people who lie down always regard it as a lack of ambition (雄心壮志) and feel ashamed (感到羞耻的) about it.
“Young people have both ambition and confusion (困惑) about their future, but most of us have refused to waste chances and challenges,” a college student said.
