A
JOINING A CHOIR
I’ve always loved singing, but singing hasn’t always loved me. I
would open my mouth with a beautiful song in my head, fully expecting
my voice to follow suit — only to get an awful tone (音调)in return.
Still, without a second thought, I continued to try to sing whenever
possible. On car journeys, when my now twenty something sons were
small, they would make a great play ( hands over their ears, shouting
‘ No,Mum,stop!’) of going through punishment as I sang along to the radio.
Never in a hundred years would I have thought about joining a choir. And when I did finally become a member of my first choir 15 years ago, something fantastic happened to my life. From the first time I experienced my voice as something special but also comfortable, in harmony (和谐)with the other singers, I lost my heart to singing. It was like falling in love. And everyone in the choir had the same shining smiles and bright eyes — singing made them feel happy, too.
Although it is singing itself that makes me happy,it is also how a choir works together. There is something magical about breathing together. The voice of everyone singing quietly together is powerful and excitingly mysterious (神秘的),almost spiritual.
And there’s the unexpected friendship from the activities we do as a choir: raising money for good causes and taking our singing sometimes to places where people are forgotten and sad.
I am now a member of six choirs and,if I can, sing every day of the week. I stand in front of several hundred people, and know that some,if not all,of each song will sound not bad at all.
24. What did the writer’s sons think of her singing when they were small?
A. Terrible. B. Comfortable. C. Fantastic. D. Boring.
25. When did the writer join her first choir?
A. A week ago. B. Six years ago. C. Fifteen years ago. D. Twenty years ago.
26. What brings the writer the unexpected friendship?
A. Having car journeys with her sons.

C. Having shining smiles and bright eyes.
D. Singing in front of hundreds of people.

I was feeling really down because my long-time friend had died. Then I started a six-week volunteering at a nursing home all day even Saturday. My duty was to serve the meal and clean up. One day I was told to go to Room 117 to make sure the patient was all right. I found a boy of eight sitting in bis bed watching a movie. We started to talk, and I found out that his family rarely visited, and all he did every day was watching TV I wanted to cry for him, and for my lost friend. As we talked, he had a smile on his face, and I asked him why and how he still managed to stay happy.
He thought for a moment, and then said that too many people were dead even before they died. They walked around feeling that God had cursed(诅咒) them and they had nothing to live for.The boy said that he would not be like that. He woke 'every morning thankful to see another sunrise. I found the last outdoor table at my favorite cafe. Reading as I ate my breakfast slowly, I was enjoying the feeling of the cool wind and the warm sun when a table next to me opened up. A woman, who had been standing nearby, clearly waiting for a seat, stepped towards the table. But from the other direction, straight from the parking lot, came a man who got to the table first.
The woman, with a smile on her face, explained that she'd been keeping her eye on that table for several minutes and had been on her way over. The man, also smiling but uncompromising, told her she was out of luck.
She stood off the side, clearly disappointed, and greeted her friend with the disappointing news. I sat at my table, taking in the scene, and suddenly I realized that I had an opportunity to be kind.
I stood up and asked her to come to my table. Quietly, I told her I had seen what had happened, and I was happy to give her my table. I was only going to be there a few more minutes anyway, so I was happy for her and her friend to have the seat.
"But where will you sit?" she asked. I was almost done eating, I said, and I would find a seat at the counter (柜台) inside. She thanked me and beamed with delight as she invited her friend to sit down.
Thinking about it as I finished up, I realized that whether or not the woman had acceptable demand for the table was unimportant. The feeling of the situation—the look of hurt on her face—had struck me, and I had the ability to do something about it.
I just hope that woman's morning at the cafe was great. I know mine was.

Lots of times, Pap would lock me in the wooden house and go away. Pap was pretty careful not to leave a knife or anything in the cabin while he was gone. But I finally got something — a saw, and started sawing hard to help myself out. As soon as I heard Pap coming up from town, I hid the saw and waited. He came in angrily, "Get out to the boat and get what I brought from town."
It was good to be outside again, even if it was for just a few minutes. If I wanted to, I could take off running right now. I'd just run away, but that's when Pap yelled, "Boy, are you asleep or drowned?"
At dinner time, Pap'd drank too much and fell asleep on the floor. I thought about taking the key from his pocket quietly, but he was having a restless sleep. I waited for him to settle down, but then I got too tired and fell asleep.
It was after sunup when Pap woke me. "Get out there and catch us some fish," he ordered. I headed out and saw something else floating toward me in the river. It was a canoe (独木舟). I jumped in and swam over to it. It was empty inside, then I had a good idea. I pulled that canoe up and hid it behind some bushes. When I had my chance, I'd go down the river in the canoe. No one would ever find me.
Pap got angry when he saw me back, wet all over. So I got locked inside the cabin again. Once Pap set off for town, I had my chance.
When I was ready to run off through the hole I cut with the saw, I realized Pap would know I'd run away. So I smashed the door with an ax. Then I found a wild pig lying dead in the woods and dripped some of its blood on the cabin floor. I pulled out some of my hair and dropped it on the floor, too.

“Amy! Milk!” Mama called.
Milk. It was Amy’s turn to get it. Amy sighed and shut her first-aid(急救) book.
Amy tied the cow close to a tree. Somewhere down the mountain, some volunteer doctors were teaching medical skills to village nurses. Amy heard Betty dive off hours ago. “She should have taken me with her. She thinks I’m too young.” Amy thought. “But she’s wrong. I am already 15!”
Amy carried the milk back to Mama, then wandered up the road. Roy, a village boy, was trying to stand on a horse’s back. “No wonder they don’t trust kids with anything important,” Amy thought.
She had just turned away when she heard a heavy fall and a few cries. Roy was on the ground. “Roy!” The kids nearby ran towards him. “Get Betty,” one said. Amy shook her head. “Betty’s gone to the city.”
The kids didn’t know what to do. Amy ran to Roy and saw one of his legs out of shape. A broken leg! She remembered what the first-aid book said about it.
“Victor!” Amy called to one of the boys. “Go get Roy’s mama, and find someone with a truck,” She turned to the others. “Give me your shirts. We need something to tie his leg with.”
Amy then found a strong, straight stick. She carefully wrapped the shirts around Roy’s leg and the stick. Roy cried out in pain. “I know it hurts,” Amy said softly. “But this will hold it still until you get to the hospital.”
When Amy was done, she looked up and saw Roy’s mama and a man watching beside a truck. “Thank you, Amy,” Roy’s mama said. Amy helped them lift Roy into the truck, then they drove down the hillside towards the hospital.

The young painter said firmly(坚定地), “No. This is a shame for me! I would prefer not to sell it, rather than be humiliated by you. Someday, you will pay 20 times the cost for breaking your promise.”
After that, the painter worked hard day and night. Finally, he became well-known in the art world.
The rich man forgot about the artist and what he had told him. But one day, some friends told him, “There is a painting selling for 200,000 dollars and the man in the painting looks exactly like you. It has a name of 'Thief(贼)”.
Then, the rich man remembered the artist. He quickly went to say sorry and paid 200,000 dollars to buy the portrait. The young painter made the rich man lower his head in the end.

Resting her phone on a stand and making the light more suitable, 49-year-old Lyu Min started her livestreaming session — her daily job during the COVID-19 outbreak. Dressed in a qipao, a traditional Chinese dress, Lyu started the livestreaming session from her workshop at 10 in the morning, sharing the art of making Chinese knots with many handicraft(手工艺) lovers. Lyu, an inheritor(继承人) of the art of making Chinese knots, which is listed as an intangible(非物质) cultural heritage, became a livestreaming host.
“Though the sales of Chinese knots have dropped a lot, I’m still confident that I can get out of the trouble brought by the outbreak. Herman planted the hot peppers (胡椒) in his five-hectare field in his town. The 36-year-old man put up a sign reading “Africa Hema Village” in Chinese, English and his native language. His first harvest will start this
month. Herman studied in China from 2011 to 2018, receiving his master’s degree and a doctorate in environmental science. He returned to Rwanda in 2018 with his wife, Yang Hong, who is from China, and started his own business. Hema Xiansheng CEO Hou Yi visited Rwanda to find quality products to bring to the Chinese market. Hot peppers were one of his discoveries. The couple helped Hou’s team, from research to field trips, testing production processes (加工) and so on. They also helped Hema Xiansheng’s purchasing (采购) manager, Chen Huifang, when she led a team of eight to visit Rwanda to research the possibilities of making hot pepper products that suit Chinese preferences.
“We wore rubber gloves when we touched them. Our fingers still felt hot the next day,” Chen said. Their research and development team spent four days studying and cooking the peppers. Transporting fresh hot peppers to China proved difficult, so the fresh peppers can’t be imported (进口) into China. Then Chen’s team decided to perform basic processing in Rwanda before shipping. Processing requires a careful balance. Too much salt will make the peppers less delicious. Too little, and the peppers may go bad. Because plastics mustn’t be used in Rwanda, they had to find proper ways to carry the pepper sauce. The material they first used couldn’t stand the long flights. Now Chen is happy to see that the pepper sauce has sold well in Hema’s offline and online stores.
Herman pointed out that few local farmers grow hot peppers because the market is small. A small amount is sold to Europe. And local need is limited due to its spiciness. So, about half the harvest is wasted every year. A young man in Rwanda will only make 10 yuan ($1.4) a day by working in the cities, but if they grow hot peppers due to Hema’s orders, they can make 50 to 60 yuan a day. Herman expressed his willingness to introduce more people to make more money by farming, rather than working for lower incomes, when e-commerce (电子商务) can bring greater needs and sales.
“It’s a chance for Rwandan people to join the new field and change their lives,” Herman said, “Through building more Hema Villages, Rwanda has the chance to become a country of digital agriculture.”
42. “Africa Hema Village” in Paragraph 1 is a place _______.
A. called Hema in Africa B. where Herman’s wife was born
C. providing hot peppers for Hema D. for Africans to buy hot peppers
43. Why should the peppers be processed before shipping to China? Because _______.
A. a balance is needed when the processing is done
B. fresh hot peppers mustn’t be imported into China
C. in Rwanda, people are not allowed to use plastics
D. during shipping, fresh hot peppers are easy to go bad
44. If a young man in Rwanda grows hot peppers for Hema, he may get about ______.
A. 10 dollars a week B. 1,600 yuan a month
C. 500 dollars a year D. 16,000 yuan half a year
45. What can we learn from the passage?
A Many types of products have been offered in Africa Hema Village.
B. Hot peppers from Africa have a large market all around the world.
C. Hema Xiansheng paid for Herman’s seven-year education in China.
D. Herman hopes to do something to improve people’s lives in Rwanda.

After a while, a group of women came along, each balancing a pot of water on her head. One woman tripped over (绊倒) the stone and her water pot went crashing to the ground. She picked herself up and walked away in tears. Neither she nor her friends thought about moving the stone out of the road.
The king watched all day as many people complained about the stone, but he found nobody was willing to move it. The king wondered, “Is there no one in this village who feels any responsibility to keep their neighbors from harm?”

Our school organized (组织) a Sino-foreign exchange activity last year. When I saw my classmates speak English well and chat cheerfully with those foreign students on the stage, I envied them at that moment because I also wanted to make friends with foreigners. Outside the school, I was in a similar predicament (困境). While I was traveling abroad, I was upset when some friendly English-speaking locals tried to talk with me.
In order to change all of this, I made up my mind to improve my spoken English. I changed my attitude (态度) towards my flaw (缺陷). As Charlie Chaplin, one of the most famous comedians ever, once said, "You have to believe in yourself. That's the secret of success.” No one can complete something without confidence. So I set out to take an active part in different kinds of English activities and bring myself to give speeches in front of all my classmates. Chances only prefer the prepared mind. Through a whole year of efforts, I’ve made great progress in my spoken English and I'm no longer afraid of speaking English in public. Never say never! If I can make the impossible possible, so can you. Face difficulties with courage and overcome them, and you will finally achieve success.

Mr Klein told his class that a new student, Inez, would join them soon. He said that Inez was deaf. She “talked” with others by using sign language. Mr Klein knew sign language and he decided to teach it to his students so that they could also “talk” with Inez.
First, they learned to sign letters. Some letters were hard to remember. Other letters, like C, were easier because the shape of the hand was the same as the shape of the letter.
The next thing they learned was finger spelling. They signed one letter after another to spell a word. They started with two-letter words such as at and on, and then spelled longer words.
Finally, Mr Klein showed them that just one sign could be used for a whole word. To make the sign for the word “fine”, a person spreads out the five fingers on one hand, touches the thumb to the chest and moves the hand away from the chest. Signing is not just done with the hands. Expressions on the face are also important. The students also learned to sign a question mark by using expressions on the face.
When Inez first entered the classroom, she looked nervous. But the students signed, “ Good morning, Inez.” She gave the class a big smile and signed back, “ What a wonderful welcome!”

On March 19,2019, eight-year-old Tani won the New York Championship(纽约象棋冠军赛) of his age group. But the boy, who was homeless at the time, began learning the game less than a year ago.
Tani and his family arrived in New York City from Africa in 2017. A church helped him enter the primary school, P. S. 116. Here the gifted boy was first introduced to chess by a part-time teacher Makofsky, owner of a chess club. Interested in the game, the seven-year-old asked his mother to allow him to join the club. Not able to afford the chess classes, she emailed Makofsky. To her surprise and joy, Makofsky agreed that Tani could learn it for free.
