Wherever she goes, Molly leaves her marks. Without saying a word, she speaks to people with her kind eyes. Even when she walks away, she leaves an impression. Molly’s mark is a smile, stamped into the ground by the horseshoe at the bottom of her false leg.
A few years ago, Molly was badly attacked by a dog. The dog bit all four Molly’s legs and left large cuts on her face. Molly’s owner, Kate Harris, took her to an animal hospital. Doctors there were able to save Molly’s life, but soon one of her legs became very infected.
At first, doctors thought Molly would not survive. But Molly changed their minds. This pony, as doctors noticed, shifted her weight, and rested her good legs from time to time. Doctors knew that Molly had amazing intelligence, and that she wanted to live.
Several doctors operated on Molly, and removed her infected leg. A false leg was made for her. The leg was a hollow cast with a pole at the bottom for balance. Doctors gave Molly a special horseshoe at the bottom of the leg. This horseshoe she had had a stamp of a smiling face in it!
After the operation, Molly walked around on all four legs, as if nothing had ever happened to her! Now, with every step she takes, she stamps a smile in the dirt. But she leaves her mark in other ways, too.
Kate Harris took Molly to the false leg center. There were children there who, like Molly, had artificial arms or legs. They were amazed to see a pony with a false leg. Molly made them smile and gave them hope. Soon, Molly began to visit schools, nursing homes, army bases and hospitals. A book was even written about Molly!

People have grown taller over the last century. A global study looked at the average height of the 18-year-olds in 200 countries in 1914 and 2014. The results reveal that while Swedes were the tallest people in the world in 1914, Dutch men have risen from the 12th place to claim top spot with an average height of 182.5cm. Latvian women, meanwhile, rose from the 28th place in 1914 to become the tallest in the world a century later, with an average height of 169.8cm.
James Bentham, a co-author of the research from Imperial College, London, says the global trend is likely to be due primarily to improvements in nutrition and healthcare. “An individual’s genes have a big influence on their height, but once you average over whole populations, genes play a less key role,” he adds.
A little extra height brings a number of advantages, says Elio Riboli of Imperial College. “Being taller is associated with longer life expectancy,” he says. “This is largely due to a lower risk of dying of cardiovascular (心血管的) disease among taller people.”
“But while height has increased around the world, the trend in many countries of north and sub-Saharan Africa causes concern,” says Riboli. While height increased in Uganda and Niger during the early 20th century, the trend has reversed in recent years, with height decreasing among 18-year-olds.
“One reason for these decreases in height is the economic situation in the 1980s,” says Alexander Moradi of the University of Sussex. The nutritional and health crises that followed the policy of structural adjustment led to many children and teenagers failing to reach their full potential in terms of height.
Bentham believes the global trend of increasing height has important influences. “How tall we are now is strongly influenced by the environment we grow up in,” he says. “If we give children the best possible start in life now, they will be healthier and more productive for decades to come.”
28. What can we learn from the study in paragraph 1?
A. The increase in women’s height is bigger than men’s.
B. Swedes were the tallest with an average height of 182.5cm in 1914.
C. There has been little increase in most countries.
D. Dutch men were the tallest people in the world in 2014.
29. According to James Bentham, how do genes influence the increase of people’s height?
A. They determine people’s height completely.
B. They influence more on an individual than on populations.
C. They have the same influences as nutrition and healthcare.
D. They play a more significant role in females than males.
30. What does the underlined word “reversed” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Changed in the opposite direction. B. Grown in the same way.
C. Appeared a second time. D. Stopped all of a sudden.
31. What is Bentham’s attitude to the influences of the increasing height?
A. Uncaring. B. Negative. C. Objective. D. Critical.
D
Have you ever had such an experience? Travelers in the airport line up and march slowly toward the full body scanner. Have you wondered that screening may one day speed up dramatically? Now, scientists are creating a cheap and smart new device that gathers data in a flash.
It relies on microwaves to image objects. Microwaves are a form of electromagnetic radiation — types of energy that travel through space as a wave. Electromagnetic radiation includes visible light, which can be seen with the naked eye. It also includes several types of energy, such as microwaves, that aren’t visible with the naked eye.
In January, scientists at Duke University and elsewhere reported creating a new device that could help make smarter, faster and cheaper scanning machines. So far, the new device has been tested only in the lab. But if it works outside the lab, too, it could find uses in s host of new products.
At airports, the new device could be used in machines that scan people for guns, knives of other would-be weapons. A technique similar to the one used by the researchers could be applied to other scanners, like those doctors use to peer into the body. This could reduce the amount of time patients spend in a scanner and the cost of such procedures. The device’s designers even imagine police officers wearing vests embedded with the new technology to help identify a hidden weapon.
Instead of requiring expensive technology, a scanner based on the device could use existing materials (like copper ) in a smarter way. Called metamaterials, there become useful based on how they’re designed, not what they’re made of.
“This definitely represents a less expensive and potentially faster alternative to current imaging methods, and its working principle is easily understood,” Kevin Kelly told Science News. Kelly is a technology specialist at Rice University in Houston.
32. What can we infer from the first paragraph?
A. Every traveler is willing to have a security scan.
B. The current security scan system should be improved.
C. The new system has been put into market.
D. The speed of security scan is slow because there are so many travelers.
33. What is special about microwaves compared to visible light according to the passage?
A. You can’t see it with the naked eye.
B. It is a form of electromagnetic radiation.
C. It can travel through space.
D. It is a kind of energy.
34. With the new device we could do the following things except_____________.
A. shortening the patients’ test time.
B. helping patients spend less money.
C. helping the police officers identify a hidden weapon.
D. reducing the suffering of the patient.
35. What do you think the author will probably talk about in the following paragraph?
A. The application of the new device. B. What is the new device like?
C. How does the new device work? D. People’s attitude about the new device.
