Deveza’s mother was on the waiting list for a kidney transplant(肾移植). Deveza wanted to donate one of her own kidneys—but she was turned down because she might develop the same health problems as her mother in later life.
Deveza came up with a different plan. In 2017, she started the world’s first paired exchange of different organs between living donors, exchanging half her liver(肝) for someone else’s kidney. A case study of the organ exchange has now been published, and the surgeons who were involved are calling for more exchanges like this. “You can imagine the enormous impact for mixed organ extended chains,” says John Roberts, a surgeon at University of California, San Francisco.
Most organ transplants come from people who have died, but there are never enough organs. As most people can manage with just one of their kidneys, people with kidney failure are increasingly receiving donated organs from relatives or friends. If someone wants to donate but their immune(免疫的) system is unsuited, doctors may be able to find pairs of would-be donors who can each give a kidney to the other’s relative.
When Deveza was looking into such chains, she came across research describing the idea of trading a kidney with the only other organ generally taken from a living donor—the liver. She suggested the idea to many hospitals before she finally contacted Roberts, who saw the idea’s potential.
Deveza was assessed to be in good enough health to donate part of her liver. It then took 18 months to find Annie Simmons, in Idaho, whose liver was unsuitable to use as a transplant for her sister with severe liver disease. They drew up a plan: Simmons would donate a kidney to Deveza’s mother, and in return, Deveza would give half her liver to Simmons’ sister. The hospital gave the go-ahead and the four operations took place on the same day successfully.
The team hope that the ground-breaking case will inspire more people to consider doing the same. Roberts says that direct exchanges involving two donors could enable up to thirty extra living-donor liver transplants a year—a ten percent increase.
24. What did Deveza do to save her mother?
A. Carrying out a case study. B. Calling for kidney donations.
C. Launching a medical experiment. D. Trading half her liver for a kidney.
25. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. Patients’ desperation to survive.
B. Several sources of organ donation.
C. Current situation of organ transplants.
D Doctors’ efforts to improve organ transplants.
26. What can be inferred about the organ exchange between Deveza and Simmons?
A. It discouraged organ donation. B. It brought two families together.
C. It met with widespread approval. D. It produced a desirable outcome.
27. What is the best title for the text?
A. My Liver, Your Kidney
B. Mother’s Love, Our Happiness
C. Organ Transplant: Blessing for Patients
D. Organ Exchange: Major Medical Advances

Modern agriculture and its ability to feed billions of people may be among humanity's greatest successes. However, it comes with hidden costs. For example, have you ever considered how much water is needed to provide you with a steak or a salad? It may surprise you.
In a recent study published in the journal Nutrients, scientists from the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization(CSIRO), Australia's national science organization, took a close look at the diets of 9,341 adult Australians — specifically, their “water-scarcity footprints (水消耗足迹)”.
It turned out that a sweet tooth not only adds to our waistlines (腰围) but also stresses our water resources. The water-scarcity footprint is a widely recognized measurement of water consumption. First, it counts the liters of water you used. Then, it looks at the place where the water was used. The more lacking water is in your area, the larger your water-scarcity footprint.
The scientists found that the average Australian’s diet had a water-scarcity footprint of 362 liters per day. Snacks (小吃) — cookies, cakes and alcohol — accounted for 25 percent of the water-scarcity footprint. The research also included a glass of wine (41 liters), a single serving of potato chips(23 liters), and a small bar of milk chocolate(21 liters).
Not surprisingly, cutting out snacks would be the NO.1 priority if you wanted to lower your own water-scarcity footprint.
Earth's surface is 70 percent water, but only 2.5 percent of that can be used for drinking or farming. By 2030, a world of about 8.6 billion people will need 35 percent more water, 40 percent more energy, and 50 percent more food, according to the United States National Intelligence Council. So, we need to watch what we eat, not just for our personal health but for the health of our societies.
28. What did the recent study closely focus on?
A. Modern agriculture.
B. Average Australians.
C. Water resources.
D. Water-scarcity footprints.
29. What did scientists from CSIRO find in their study?
A. Sweet teeth lead to thin waistlines.
B. Australians' diets are mainly made up of snacks.
C. The water-scarcity footprint is a measurement of saving water.
D. Lacking water in our area means a larger water-scarcity foot print.
A. the least important thing
B. the least impossible thing
C. something to be done first
D. something to be prevented first
30. What does the underlined part "the N0.1 priority" in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
31. What does the last paragraph intend to tell us?
A. Take care of our diets.
B. Protect our drinking water.
C. Make good use of energy.
D. Produce more healthy food.

Many people have participated into lots of virtual meetings these years. Some research shows this adjustment might not impact workplace productivity to any great degree. A new study, though, suggests otherwise.
In the study, 602 participants were randomly paired and asked to come up with creative uses for a product. They were also randomly selected to work together either in person or virtually. The pairs were then ranked by assessing their total number of ideas, as well as those concepts’ degree of novelty, and asked to submit their best idea. Among the groups, virtual pairs came up with significantly fewer ideas, suggesting that something about face- to-face interaction generates more creative ideas. The findings could stiffen employers’ resolve to urge or require their employees to come back to the office.
“We ran this experiment based on feedback from companies that it was harder to innovate with remote workers,” said lead researcher Melanie Brucks. “Unlike other forms of virtual communication, like phone calls or e-mail, videoconferencing copies the in-person experience quite well, so I was surprised when we found meaningful differences between in-person and video interaction for idea generation.”
When random objects were placed in both the virtual and physical rooms, the virtual pairs of participants spent more time looking directly at each other rather than letting their look wander about the room and taking in the entire scene. Eyeing one’s whole environment and noticing the random objects were associated with increased idea generation. On platforms, the screen occupies our interactions. Our look wavers less. “Looking away might come across as rude,” said Brucks, “so we have to look at the screen because that is the defined context of the interaction, the same way we wouldn’t walk to another room while talking to someone in person. ”
Like most educators, Brucks has primarily taught virtually in the past three years, and she did notice some benefits of the approach as well. Her students were more likely to take turns speaking and her shyer students spoke up more often, rid of the anxiety that comes from addressing a large classroom. Brucks found that one solution to improving virtual idea generation might be to simply turn off the camera, for her students felt “freer” and more creative when asked to do so. And this may be sound advice for the workplace.
Virtual teamwork can’t replace face-to-face teamwork. Idea selection proficiency (能力) is only valuable if you have strong options to select from, and face-to-face teams are the best means to generate winning options. Perhaps the workplace will find a compromise—a sweet spot in the middle that balances working from both home and office.
32.What does the underlined word “stiffen” in Paragraph 2 most probably mean?
A.Shake. B.Revise. C.Challenge. D.Strengthen.
33.What might lead researcher Melanie Brucks originally think?
A.Videoconferencing can’t compare with in-person communication.
B.Participants should make eye contact in an online meeting.
C.The feedback from companies seems questionable.
D.Creative ideas may emerge from casual thoughts.
34.What can we learn about Brucks’ class?
A.Her students relieved anxiety by speaking up.
B.Her students progressed in focusing attention.
C.Her students took advantage of virtual learning.
D.Her students displayed talent for public speaking.
35.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. Interacting Virtually Impacts Working Participation
B.Maintaining Teamwork Improves Idea Generation
C.Grouping Randomly Increases Productivity
D.Brainstorming Online Limits Creativity

I took the Harvard Summer School program in my vacation. During my stay there, I spent many time studying in the main library Widener. I enjoyed myself in the ocean of knowledge, either doing research for my papers or read special edition books. The library, that is named after its donor Harry Widener, stands right next the Emerson building of philosophy. Opening a pair of heavy yet elegant metal door, I was immediately bathed in warm light. I wandered around the library, fascinating to find one treasure after other.
The library is the amazing place. Only when one visits to the library can he fully experience the academic atmosphere. For me, the library as well as the courses explain Harvard’s place as the home of devoted scholars.

M: Bobby, can you stop talking when your mouth is full? And can you sit up in your chair, please? W: And how many times have your father and I told you? Don't eat with your hands!
Text 4
W: Grandpa, how come your hair looks so different in this picture?
M: Well, because I was a lot younger then. You see, when you get older, you start losing your hair. Don't worry, though. It's different with girls.
Text 5
W: I need your help moving my new table into the apartment this weekend.
M: I'll be back at my place on Sunday. Will we need to pick it up with my truck?
W: Yes. They're holding it at the furniture store where I bought it from.
Text 6
W: Why do you listen to that music? Why not listen to classical music?
M: Classical music is the music of the past and this is the music of the present.
W: But can't you turn it down? It hurts my ears.
M: It's electronic music. We live in an electronic age. I do like some classical music. Some of it is very clever.
W: I don't understand your music.
M: When you were 18, you probably liked the music of your time. Things change.
W: When I was 16, a year younger than you, I attended a classical concert. I've loved that music ever since.
Text 7
M: Are you going to be home at 3:00 p.m.today, or are you staying late at work?
W: I'm not staying late, but I was going to stop by the grocery store on my way home. Why?
M: I have something being delivered around 5:00 p.m., and I want to make sure someone is there to receive it.
W: Oh, okay. I can be home by 5:00 p.m., but the kids will both be home from soccer practice by then. One of them could sign for it.
M: No, they can't, because it is a box of wine. The delivery person will need to see identification to make sure the person signing is over 21 years old. Our kids are not old enough yet.
W: Fine. I will hurry home before the wine arrives.

W: I think I want to become an expert on computer safety, but the schools that I want to apply to don't have that major. I know that there are some private colleges that offer it. Should I send applications to those places, too?
M: I don't think that's a good idea, honey. You can consider that as a career, but I think you should study a broader subject in school.
W: Like what?
M: Well, what would be a learning requirement for a computer security job?
W: Computer science!
M: Definitely. But let's go even further. Do you know what you should learn well in order to be good at computer science?
W: Math?
M: Yes!
W: But … I don't know if I want to major in math. It seems like it would be so hard!
M: It's okay, honey. You don't have to only study math. But you do need to have a solid background in it. Choosing computer science as your major is good, but you should also take plenty of math classes. No matter what you plan to do, I'm behind you, my little girl.
Text 9
M: Hey,Lisa. I am glad I catch you before you go in. Now we can go in together.
W: Hey, John. I'm surprised to see you here. What made you come tonight? I thought you said you were busy when I asked yesterday. Did your plan to go to your grandparents' house change?
M: Well, I did say that originally. However, I want to be honest now and tell you that I lied to you. I really wanted to come tonight, but I was scared. I have never been on a roller coaster before.
W: Don't apologize for that. I'm sorry that I put you into that position. I wouldn't have invited you if I had known you were scared. I never meant to make tonight stressful.
M: No, it's my fault. I really never had the opportunity to fix my problem before, so I didn't know what to do.But I came tonight to face my fears directly!
W: That is very brave of you. I'm glad to be here with you while you do that. Besides, the town's holiday celebrations have much smaller rides. It is a good place to start. Let's buy some tickets and enjoy the celebrations.
M: Thank you for being so understanding. You are a really great friend. Let me buy the tickets for us to thank you.
Text 10
M: Today is the third day of my week's holiday in Paris. The journey here was very long and I felt tired because I didn't get much sleep on the plane. But I was excited when I got in the taxi and I could see the Eiffel Tower from the window. It really is quite an impressive sight. The weather here is a little bit cold, and sometimes rainy. So I had to buy a new umbrella because I forgot to bring one. The traffic is very bad, so usually I like to walk if I can. But it's a big city, so it can get very tiring after a few hours. The food here is delicious, but I don't like the breakfast served at the hotel. However, I am so lucky because there is a nice bakery close to where I am staying. They have fresh bread every morning and the shopkeeper always greets me with a big smile. I have visited most of the famous places, but I couldn't get into the Louvre, because I went too late last night and the tickets were all sold out. I really hope I can go today, because I'm a big fan of art galleries and I must see the painting of Mona Lisa. It's the real reason I came here.
