Should Museum Entry Be Free With International Museum Day coming up, today we are asking readers: Should museums be free or should people have to pay for ticket? Let us know your idea. Comments (评论) Museums are not only there for enjoyment; they are educational. This is why they must be free. While museums need a huge amount of money to operate (运转), let the wealthy pay for it. The idea of a person or child interested in art not being able to see it because of cost is wrong. Krista Chen (US)-Age 15 Museums teach people about their past. This is part of our shared culture that should be available to everyone. Rich or poor people should never pay an entrance fee (入场费). Rob Sanchez (Australia)-Age 17 There are no simple answers. Low ticket prices could help museums keep open. But businessmen should also provide museums with more money and other support. They have social responsibility too. Amber White (UK)-Age 16 I think museums should be free to the public. I do, however, think the museums should organize money-raising events twice a year to help pay for the cost of keeping open. Li Mishao (China)-Age 15 |

Has anyone ever told you that eating carrots will help you see in the dark? This is just one of many incorrect beliefs you may have heard. Below, TEENS has picked out scientific explanations for three mistakes that people make about their eyes. Let’s take a look.
Can eating carrots improve your eyesight?
Carrots are rich in vitamin A, which helps the eyes to turn light into information for your brain. This allows people to see in darker places. However, eating more carrots won’t help you see better. A certain minimum amount will help, but a large number of carrots will not give you superhuman vision.
If your parents have bad eyesight, will you have bad eyesight, too?
Myopia (近视) can be passed from parents to children. A study by the American Optometric Association found that if both parents are myopic, there’s a 33 to 60 percent chance that their child will be. For children who have one parent with myopia, the chance is 23 to 40 percent, and it’s down to 6 to 15 percent for kids with non-myopic parents. So if your eyesight is bad, your children might still have good vision.
Do color blind people see the world in black and white?
Color blindness doesn’t usually mean that people see the world like an old movie. They usually can’t tell certain colors apart, especially green and red. Another commonly confused pair of colors is yellow and blue. Our eyes have cone cells (视锥细胞) that sense different wavelengths (波长) of light. If these cells don’t work properly, color blindness occurs.
There are different levels of color blindness. Some people are only color blind in low light.
However, in the most serious form of color blindness, everything is shades of gray.
49. According to the article, eating carrots ________.
A. stops the brain from seeing B. doesn’t help you see better at all
C. will help you see clearly in the dark D. is good for your eyes to some degree
50. If both parents have myopia, their child’s chance of having good eyesight is ________.
A. 40—67% B. 33—60% C. 23—40% D. 6—15%
51. What is the cause of color blindness, according to the text?
A. Watching movies for too long. B. Getting too little exercise.
C. Cone cells not working properly. D. Changes in the wavelength of light.
52. What is the purpose of the article?
A. To offer some advice on protecting your eyes.
B. To clear up some misunderstandings about our eyes.
C. To provide help for improving your vision.
D. To explain how bad eyesight and color blindness form.

Do you like birthdays? Do you like going to church (教堂)? Do you enjoy parties? Do you like seeing everyone in the neighborhood? Do you feel happy when you get lots of gifts? Do you like to dance? If so, then you would probably like to have a quinceanera.
The word quinceanera is Spanish (西班牙语). A quinceanera is a special ceremony (典礼) and birthday party. The birthday girl can also be called a quinceanera.
Only birthday girls who are 15 are called quinceaneras. Fifteen is an important age for girls who speak Spanish. When they turn 15, they are no longer children.
A quinceanera begins with a ceremony at church. The ceremony is important to the people around. After the ceremony, there is a beautiful party. People around take part in the party, too. It is happy. Everyone dances. They give the birthday girl presents and tell her that she looks pretty.
The birthday girl is like Cinderella. She wears a pink dress. She has shoes with high heels (跟). Her clothes are symbols. They tell everyone that the birthday is special. She is an adult now. She can now dance in parties. Like Cinderella at her bail, the birthday girl dances at her quinceanera party.
Some places in America don’t have quinceaneras. Many Americans organize parties when kids turn 18. Those events are like quinceaneras, but they are not the same. But people in America who speak Spanish may have quinceaneras. They may have a ceremony and organize a big party for the people around when their girls turn 15.
53. Why does the writer write so many questions in the first paragraph?

D. To show what a quinceanera is like.

A. It means the girl can stop studying at school.
B. It means the girl can get married.
C. It means the girl becomes an adult.
D. It means the girl can start to organize a party.
55. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Only families can take part in the quinceaneras,
B. People in Spain organize quinceanera parties at home.
C. You can know if it is a quinceanera through the girls clothes.

Twelve Dancing Princesses is a German fairy tale. It is included in the Children’s and Household Tales (《格林童话》) by the Grimm Brothers.
Tramper could feel the stony road through the holes in his boots. A newspaper blew by. Tramper picked it up and sat down to cover the holes in his boots with the paper.
A weak old lady stared at him.
“You think you have shoe troubles!” she said. “The King has twelve girls and all of them have holes in their slippers!”
The old lady’s feet were bare (光脚的), cut and purple from the cold. Tramper felt sorry for her, so he gave her his shabby boots. To thank him, she gave Tramper her dirty cloak (斗篷). As she walked away down the road, she called, “Stay awake. Drink no drop. Taste no cup.”
“A strange way to say goodbye,” thought Tramper.
It rained. Tramper put on the cloak and tried to read what was left of the wet newspaper. As it fell apart in his hands he read:
PALACE NOTICE WANTED: Answer to the Mystery of the Worn Slippers. REWARD: Princess’ hand in marriage. WARNING: All those who fail will be locked up. |
“Why not?” thought Tramper. “I bet I could solve the mystery. I’ve got nothing to lose. I don’t even have any boots.” And when he looked down, his feet were gone too. His feet, legs and body had gone. He was invisible. “The cloak is magic!” he said.
The king’s twelve daughters were a mystery. Each night they took off their silk slippers and went to bed. But each morning their silk slippers were full of holes, and the girls were tired out.

Can plants talk? Modern research has found something amazing: they do communicate with each other.
It has been known for some time that plants use chemicals to communicate with each other. This happens when a plant gets attacked by insects. The plant gives out chemicals from the leaves that are being eaten. This is like a warning, or a call for help: “I’m being attacked!” When another plant gets the chemicals, it starts to give out its own, different chemicals. Some of these chemicals drive insects away.
More surprisingly, plants also use sound to communicate. People can’t hear these sounds; but plants are making them. Some plants make noises with their roots. Corn and chili plants do this. Some trees make clicking noises when there is not enough water.
Most surprisingly of all, plants have an amazing system of communication that can link nearly every plant in a forest. Scientists call this system the “wood wide web”. The wood wide web is linked underground by fungi (霉菌). It links the roots of different plants to each other. It is in some ways similar to the Internet we use. Using the wood wide web, plants can share information and even food with each other. However, it may lead to bad effects. Plants may use it to steal food from each other, or spread chemicals to attack other plants.
Scientists are learning more every day about the secret ways in which plants talk to each other. Maybe one day we will know enough about plant communication to be able to “talk” with them ourselves.
62. What does the word “leaves” in Paragraph 2 mean in Chinese?
A. 遗弃 B. 准许 C. 假期 D. 叶子
