It gives a voice to emerging public consciousness about the state of our planet. The founder is Gaylord Nelson. What moved Gaylord Nelson to action was the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill (溢出) in Southern California, the largest oil spill in the United States at that time. The spill proved to be an environmental nightmare as it had a strong impact on marine life, killing an estimated 3,500 seabirds, as well as marine animals such as dolphins, elephant seals and sea lions. Inspired by the student antiwar movement at that period of time, Nelson found it was a right time to channel the energy of the students towards a fight for environmental protection. He decided that it was time to educate the Americans on the need to protect the environment. Thus, Earth Day was born in 1970, and public environmental consciousness took centre stage. On 22nd April 1970, millions of Americans took to the streets to demonstrate for a healthy, sustainable environment and thousands of students marched in protest at the terrible situation of the environment. Businesses were forced to follow environmental standards if they wanted to continue their operations. The year 1990 saw Earth Day reach out to many more countries around the world. It helped pave the way for the 1992 United Nations Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, bringing together many nations, for a joint effort towards protecting the environment. In 2009, the United Nations decided to officially set April 22 as Earth Day. For his role as the founder of Earth Day, Gaylord Nelson was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom (1995), the highest honour given to civilians in the United States. We honour the man, as the fight for a cleaner environment continues.4.What can we learn about Earth Day?A.It was founded at the end of 1970s.B.It was first celebrated in Rio de Janeiro.C.People will march on the streets on this day.D.It arouses public environmental awareness.5.What did Gaylord Nelson do to make Earth Day possible?A.He reduced the loss of the oil spill.B.He participated in an antiwar movement.C.He set environmental standards for businesses.D.He involved more people in environmental issues.6.What is the third paragraph mainly about?A.The focus of Earth Day.B.The development of Earth Day.C.The world's concern for the environment.D.The joint efforts of different countries.7.Which of the following best describes Gaylord Nelson?A.Intelligent. It's no wonder that the night trains of Europe have been a byword (代名词) for romance. In fact, over the past decade, much of Europe's night train network has been cut. For many, it seemed the end of the line was near. But recently there has been a recovery of night trains across Europe. On December 8th, 2020, four national rail providers teamed up to announce new routes between 13 European cities.“You leave work at a usual time, have dinner, make your way to the station, get on the train, and wake up in the place you want to be. There's no turning up at the airport at a very strange hour, as you do for a budget flight,” says Monisha Rajesh, author of “Around the World in 80 Trains”.In fact, “flight shaming” has been sweeping across Europe in the past few years. In 2018, domestic flights were 9% down in Sweden. The COVID19 pandemic has helped, too. Trains are easier to keep social distance on, says Rajesh. And night trains—where you can book an entire compartment (隔间) to yourself—are even better.Europe's geography also helps the argument for night trains, says Nicolas Forien, a member of Back on Track, who points out that half the flights leaving France are either internal, or going to a neighboring country. “The distance between European capitals is mostly ideal for night trains. The continent could be a nighttrain paradise.”8.What does the author say about the night trains of Europe?A.They run at high speed.B.They were popular among Europeans.C.They experienced a decline in number a century ago.D.They bring passengers a sense of romance.9.What does the underlined word “budget” in Paragraph 3 mean?A.Long. B.Cheap. C.Short. D.Expensive.10.As for the writer, which of the following has contributed to the recovery of Europe's night trains?①Flight shaming ②The COVID19 pandemic③The internal budget flight ④Europe's geography⑤The tourism boomA.①②⑤ B.②③④ C.①②④ D.②④⑤11.What can be a suitable title for the text?A.Why Europeans choose to travel by night trainsB.How Europe's night trains come back from the deadC.When Europeans start taking an interest in night trainsD.Whether the network of Europe's night train has been cutD[2022·贵阳高三考试]If dropping two studio albums within five months in 2020 wasn't enough of a surprise, American singersongwriter Taylor Swift is now serving her fans a third one. Here are some strategies for spending less time worrying about decisions.Go for being good enoughSince perfectionism and indecision often go hand in hand, you should be moving from a mindset that “only the best will do” to “being good enough is good enough”. It helps to reflect on your original goal. Did you begin the exhausting online shopping to find a toaster that could clean itself, roast carrots and also charge your cellphone? Or were you just looking for something that would brown your bread? __2__.Outsource (交外办理) decisionsResearch has shown that choices weaken the willpower and lead to decision fatigue (疲劳). That's why indecisive people are advised to pick their “battles”. __3__. When it comes to wine, for example, all I want is a good glass with dinner. So rather than studying which to choose, I leave the decision to my local wine store, asking it to send me a case of surprises once in a while. The 90 percent ruleWhen a yesorno decision has many pros and cons, try the “90 percent rule”. This involves evaluating an opportunity on a scale from 0 to 100. If your interest falls anywhere below 90 percent, reduce its score to zero and reject it. __4__. Why would you deliberately choose to feel that way about an important choice in your life? __5__If you're deciding whether to move across the country, imagine you've asked your best friend to choose for you. On the big day, she hands you an envelope; inside, it announces you're leaving next month. Do you feel excited? Or disappointed? Using thought experiments to separate important variables can help you cut through the fog to see clarity.A.Cut through the fogB.Turn to friends for helpC.You could rely on habits and routinesD.In other words, be choosy about choosingE.Remembering your purpose can simplify the processF.Think about how you'd feel if you scored 65 points on some testG.And big, lifechanging choices can cause a state of breaking down课下天天练(四十三) 40分阅读提分练第一节A语篇类型:应用文 主题语境:人与社会——社会生活——实地考察【语篇解读】 本文主要介绍了适合学生进行实地考察的几个地方。1. 根据标题和第一段中的“Here are some attractions to visit with your students”可推知,本篇文章是写给老师的,故A项正确。 根据第二段中的“Inspired by the student antiwar movement... for environmental protection”并结合第三段中的“On 22nd April 1970... to continue their operations”可知,Nelson受到那个时期学生反战运动的启发,动用学生的力量去教育美国民众保护环境。 根据第五段中的“too”可知,上段的“flight shaming”和本段的“The COVID19 pandemic”促成了欧洲夜火车的复苏;再结合第六段中的“Europe's geography also helps the argument for night trains”可知,欧洲的地理条件也促成了欧洲夜火车的复苏,故C项正确。11. 国内的,内部的【短语】para.2:team up(with sb. 根据第二段中的“The rerecorded Fearless, a composition of 19 tracks... 6 additional ‘From the Vault’ songs”可知D项正确,C项错误。[干扰项分析] 由第一段中的“Fearless (Taylor's Version), released on April 9th, is a remake”可知A项错误,专辑是重制的;B项表示新专辑属于Big Machine,文中意义则相反。13. 由第三段中的“A break with the past to start all over again—that needs good faith and a strong heart”可推出答案为D,此处表示Taylor Swift是一个意志非常坚定的人。14. 由第三段中的“So dulcet and earcatching. If you missed the 19yearold Taylor, the 31yearold Taylor will guide you to begin again”可知答案为B。15. 根据最后一段中的“The American singer's huge success in China... with China's booming music industry”可知,Taylor Swift的成功得益于中国繁荣的音乐产业。 并且your purpose和上文中的your original goal对应;the process就是指网上挑选面包机的这个选择过程。 根据前文“That's why indecisive people are advised to pick their‘battles’(这就是为什么优柔寡断的人被建议选择他们的‘战斗’)”可知,优柔寡断的人的战斗就是“选择”,所以此处是指选择他们的“选择”,和“be choosy about choosing”意思相同,对应选项D中的“In other words”。根据后文“When it comes to wine, for example, all I want is a good glass with dinner. So rather than studying which to choose, I leave the decision to my local wine store, asking it to send me a case of surprises once in a while(例如,说到葡萄酒,我只想在晚餐时喝上一杯。 F项中的how you'd feel与空后句中的feel that way相对应。故选F项。5. 根据本段最后一句“Using thought experiments to separate important variables can help you cut through the fog to see clarity”可知,利用思维实验来分离重要的变量,可以帮助你拨开迷雾,看清真相。 故选A项。
