Born in 1904, Drew was the eldest of five children. He was intelligent and showed a talent for studies and sports from a young age. In 1922, his athletic ability earned him an athletic scholarship to attend Amherst College in Massachusetts. Drew graduated from Amherst College in 1926. In 1928 he applied to medical schools and was admitted to MeGill University in Montreal, Canada. He completed his medical degree and master’s degree in surgery in 1933.

With needle-like teeth and sharp pointed nose, a gray nurse shark isn’t a creature that most people would want to meet. But Shalise Leesfield isn’t one of them.
The Australian teenager couldn’t think of a better creature to meet when scuba diving off the coast of South West Rocks, near her home in Port Macquarie, a coastal town north of Sydney.
“Many people say gray nurse sharks look frightening, but I think they are the sweetest animals ever,” she says.
The slow-moving sharks, which like to stay near the sea floor in warm, shallow waters, are — for the most part — harmless to humans. But the gray nurse shark is under threat. Populations have fallen and habitats have been lost due to ocean warming and human development, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), which lists the species as seriously endangered.
One area where they can still be seen is Fish Rock, an underwater cavern (洞穴) with a unique ecosystem, 40 miles up the coast from Leesfield’s home. But fishers are allowed access within 200 meters of Fish Rock. This is leading to a drop in the number of gray nurse sharks and increased pollution, says Leesfield. She wants to enlarge the no-fishing area, establishing a protected zone.
With Leesfield’s efforts, the area has been nominated as a Hope Spot, which is part of the mission Blue program launched by famous oceanographer Sylvia Earle that identifies places as critically important to the ocean’s health and supports protection.
“When people think about Hope Spots, they think about Sydney Harbour or the Great Barrier Reef. So to get Fish Rock up on that list is just such incredible news,” she says.
Now, Leesfield is working with politician Cate Faehrmann, marine spokesperson for the Australian Greens party in New South Wales, to legalize protection of the sharks and make the no-fishing zone protected by the law.
28. What does “them” refer to in the first paragraph?
A. Gray nurse sharks. B. Common people.
C. People fearing gray nurse sharks. D. Fishers.
29. What has led to gray nurse sharks’ being seriously endangered?
A. The development of tourism in the ocean.
B. The sharks’ preference to stay in shallow waters.
C. The feature of gray nurse sharks’ slow-moving.
D. Fishers’ being permitted within 200 meters of Fish Rock.
30. What will Leesfield and Faehrmann do to protect gray nurse sharks?
A. Recommend the Fish Rock as a Hope Spot being protected.
B. Identify the Hope Spot area as being critically important.
C. Make Fish Rock more popular among fishers nearby.
D. Make laws to protect the no-fishing zone near Fish Rock.
31. Which might be the best title of the article?
A. The Australian teenager is on a mission to protect sharks
B. Increased pollution leads to gray sharks endangered
C. Gray nurse sharks are in danger!
D. Let’s establish a protected zone!

Cyberbullying (网络霸凌) has become quite severe across the United States. But what exactly is cyber-bullying? It’s when someone repeatedly and intentionally harasses (侵扰), humiliates (羞辱), mistreats, makes fun of, or threatens another person online or while using cell phones or other electronic devices.
According to a recent Pew Research Center survey, 59% of U. S. teens have experienced at least one of six identified types of abusive online behaviors. Those behaviors include name-calling (42%), having false rumors spread about them on the internet (32%), receiving explicit images that they didn’t ask for (25%), or being the target of physical threats (16%).
The peers of some teens have even posted humiliating web pages or videos, or created embarrassing images on social media platforms. Others have taken unauthorized (未授权的) photos or videos in a bedroom, bathroom, or another location considered private, and posted them online for the world to view, rate, share, and discuss.
There are many reasons to monitor your son or daughter’s online behavior and pay close attention to the warning signs. Among the most worrisome, students who experienced bullying or cyberbullying are significantly more likely to attempt to take their own life.
“If your child suddenly has no interest in their electronic devices, appears jumpy or nervous while using their phone, or appears angry, frustrated, or depressed after going online or gaming, then they may be experiencing cyberbullying,” says Sameer Hinduja, Ph. D., co-director of the Cyberbullying Research Center and professor of Criminology at Florida Atlantic University. Also, if your child avoids conversations about what they’re doing online, becomes unusually secretive when it comes to their phone or electronic devices, or makes excuses to stay home from school, they may be the target of online bullying.
32. What is the purpose of citing the numbers in the second paragraph?
A. To show the emphasis from the society.
B. To display how cyberbullying works on children.

D. To show how researchers conduct their survey.

A. Name-calling teens on the internet.
B. Spreading false rumors of teens online.
C. Posting pictures online for the world to view.
D. Posting humiliating web pages or videos of teens.

A. Students will lose interest in their electronic after surfing online.
B. Students will get angry easily after they surf on the Internet.
C. Parents must closely monitor their teenagers’ online behavior.
D. There are signs whether teenagers are experiencing cyberbullying.
35. Who is the article most probably targeting at?

Many factors can affect a good night’s sleep — from work stress and family responsibilities to illnesses. It’s no wonder that quality sleep is sometimes not easily available.
You might not be able to control the factors that interfere with your sleep. 36 Start with these simple tips.
Stick to a sleep schedule
37 The recommended amount of sleep for a healthy adult is at least seven hours. Most people don’t need more than eight hours in bed to be well rested. Go to bed and get up at the same time every day, including weekends. Being consistent reinforces your body’s sleep-wake cycle.
If you don’t fall asleep within about 20 minutes of going to bed, leave your bedroom and do something relaxing. 38 Go back to bed when you’re tired. Repeat as needed, but continue to maintain your sleep schedule and wake-up time.
Pay attention to what you eat and drink
Don’t go to bed hungry or stuffed. In particular, avoid heavy or large meals within a couple of hours of bedtime. 39
Nicotine, caffeine and alcohol deserve caution, too. The stimulating effects of nicotine and caffeine take hours to wear off and can interfere with sleep. And even though alcohol might make you feel sleepy at first, it can disrupt sleep later in the night.
40
Keep your room cool, dark and quiet. Exposure to light in the evenings might make it more challenging to fall asleep. Avoid prolonged use of light-emiting screens just before bedtime. Consider using room-darkening shades, earplugs, a fan or other devices to create an environment that suits your needs. Doing calming activities before bedtime, such as taking a bath or using relaxation techniques, might promote better sleep.
A. Create a restful environment.
B. Discomfort might keep you up.
C. Read or listen to relaxing music.
D. Adjusting to changes in sleep patterns.
E. Set aside no more than eight hours for sleep.
F. This will work out your body and will make you more tired.
G. However, you can adopt habits that encourage better sleep.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I used to be very shy and often felt lonely. Although I did well in all the academic subjects, I was afraid of physical education. My classmates often laughed at me.
“Look at that girl,” they said. “Her feet don’t leave the ground when she runs!”
Their words embarrassed me. Moreover, whenever the teacher organized some competitive games, no one in the class liked to have me as their partner or team member. As a result, I often ended up looking at others enjoy their games.
Things would go on like that if not for a sports meet in my high school. By mistake, my name was put on the list of those who would compete in the women’s 1500 meters race. By the time people found the mistake, it was too late to change.
I was utterly dumbfounded (目瞪口呆的). 1500 meters! Running against the best runners from other classes! And in front of students of the entire school! It would be the worst nightmare I’d ever have!
“You still have time to catch up because there is still one month before the sports meet,” my classmates all said this to me, including my teacher.
My desk-mate patted me on the shoulder, “Cool! You will run for our class! And we will do training together.” Yes, this is not just for myself, but for my class too, I said to myself. But still, 1500 meters to me was like Mount Everest to a beginning climber. I had no idea even how to start my preparation.
Fortunately, my desk-mate gave me a hand. Every afternoon after class, several of us ran together. They gave me strengths. While we were running, some others would stand by the tracks cheering for us.
One month certainly couldn’t make me a good runner. But when I was standing behind the start line, I no longer felt lonely or afraid. I saw my classmates standing by the tracks waving at me as if about to run beside me.
The day finally came!
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

第四部分:
第一节:
Possible version:
Last Sunday, we visited the nursing home in our city, which is the most meaningful activity we have in this summer holiday and we learned a lot.
That day, as planned, we got up early than usual. By riding bikes we all arrived at the gate of the local nursing home. There are many elders there, some of whom looked a little lonely, maybe missing their homes. With our arrival, laughter could be heard everywhere. We accompanied those elders, listening to their stories talking about their families. Smiles spread on their faces. We learned a lot of useful life experience and lessons. We also learned life is precious and we should treasure the present time.
第二节:
Paragraph 1:
With the shot of the starting gun. I dashed out and ran as fast as I could. Soon I was out of breath and slowed down. Other runners passed me one by one, and gradually I had no idea how many of them were still behind me. My legs were getting heavier and heavier, and I might fall down at any moment. However, I suddenly heard my classmates chanting my name. My desk-mate even ran along the tracks beside me and cheered for me at the same time, just like the month-long training we did together.
Paragraph 2:
As expected, I was almost the last to cross the finish line. Immediately, my classmates held my arms and urged me to walk on my feet and not to sit down. I was surrounded, with all kinds of drinks handed to me. I felt a kind of warmth I had never felt before. Even though I was almost the last to finish the race, I was full of confidence that I would improve in the future. That sports meet was an unforgettable experience. Sports are no longer about winning or losing. They give me a lot of confidence, both confidence in my fellow students and confidence in my own potential. I am no longer lonely, no longer afraid.

Text 1
M: Hey Jenny. It’s already April. Aren’t your parents coming to visit this month?
W: Yes, they have planned to but then an emergency turned up and they have postponed their visit for two months.
Text 2
W: Jim, please put on that white shirt and change your jeans. They need to be washed.
M: That shirt is too big on me. I’ll wear the blue one instead. It’s nicer, anyway.
Text 3
W: Lewis, Don told me that he could get you that Lady Gaga’s signature through a friend at work if you’re still interested in getting it.
M: Still interested in getting it? Urn, I have every single Lady Gaga CD, and my wall is covered in her pictures! If I ever get a pet dog, I’ll probably name her Gaga. That’s how I am into her, so…
Text 4
M: Miss Richardson, my daughter didn’t sleep well last night. Will you give her some extra attention today?
W: Don’t worry, Mr. Cruise. All the kids will be taken good care of here.
Text 5
M: Do you keep in touch with your foreign friends by email?
W: No, I just phone them. What about you?
M: I used to email them, but now it’s much easier just to make video calls.
Text 6
W: Wow, it was an impression how advanced robots can be developed. I think that we need robots like those, just in this movie scene of Men in Black.
M: I admit the movie was imaginative, but I don’t think the technology is there yet to allow us to replace people with robots.
W: No, not for many of the functions, but we could have them do the more boring and dangerous tasks.
M: You mean have them work alongside our workers? I’m not sure of that pattern. Wouldn’t the robots get in the way?
W: They have sensors, which allow them to avoid other people or machines.
M: I don’t know. Let’s search for it on the Internet when we get home.
Text 7
W: David, what about going to a movie this Saturday afternoon?
M: I’d really love to, but I don’t think I can make it. I’ve got to take a cooking class that afternoon.
W: What kind of cooking class are you going to take?
M: A Chinese food cooking class. They teach you how to make some traditional Chinese food. For example, two weeks ago I learned to make dumplings, and last week I learned about how Chinese noodles are cooked. And this week, we’ll learn to make rice cake.
W: That sounds very interesting. So is the course expensive?
M: Not really.
Text 8
W: The problem is that too many people create too much waste.
M: Yes, you’re right, Carol. If everyone recycled more, we’d reduce a lot of waste. I mean, look at the amount of paper we waste in this office. It’s crazy. W: Exactly, Alex. And coffee cups, too.
M: Yes, right. If we recycled our paper and the paper cups, we’d save a lot of waste.
W: That’s right. And don’t forget plastic. Nobody recycles their plastic water bottles. Let’s do something.
M: Well, I would take the plastic bottles to the recycling center. And I’ll make a collection box which people can put their water bottles in.
W: I’ll make two collection boxes for paper and cans. If we put them in the kitchen, people will see them. We’d save a lot of waste. We’re going to make a difference.
Text 9
M: Linda, does Amy love reading?
W: She didn’t love reading in the past, but now she has fallen in love with that.
M: Could you tell me how?
W: Certainly. I helped her do that. I used to be busy with my work and never read to her. One day I found my friend Melissa often read to her daughter Lily and the little girl really loved reading. I realized I should help my daughter fall in love with reading, too.
M: So how did you help her do that?
W: First, I put down my iPad and my smartphone and began to read myself. I often read in front of her. When she saw me read, she became curious and wanted to do that, too.
M: So what else did you do?
W: I also encouraged her to read to me. Also, I chose books carefully so she wouldn’t find them boring.
M: So how did you get the books?
W: Buying a lot of books can be very costly. Luckily, we live near a library. There are many books for children.
M: That’s smart

W: Humans are forever curious about and inspired by their natural surroundings. This autumn, Penn State University and Tyler Arboretum invite you to share your own thoughts about nature in our Nature Narratives Writing Contest. Submit your writing to have the chance to be published in the Short Story Dispenser on the Penn State Brandywine campus. This contest is open to all Penn State Brandywine students, teachers, and graduates, as well as members of Tyler Arboretum, and visitors to Tyler. We want to especially encourage new writers to express their thoughts on our environment. Community members under the age of 18 are also invited to submit your writing to the contest in our youth category. If you are a friend of Penn State or Tyler Arboretum, then we welcome your writing, too! The Nature Narratives Writing Contest is open to all kinds of writing. Think about your own experiences in the outdoors and the connections between society and our planet. Be inspired and create stories of what you see and what the possibilities could be in the present and in the future. The pieces must be original writing and not have been previously published elsewhere.
