Childhd is nt nly a time fr grwing and learning, but als a time fr jy. But the jys f playtime aren’t just reserved fr human kids—animal ffspring are just as likely t get int the act as well, and sme f their activities are similar t ur wn.
Scientists believe that fr certain animal species, sme fun is play fr the sake f play, but like humans, ther frms f entertainment are preparing yungsters fr adulthd. Play is essential t develpment because it cntributes t the cgnitive, physical, scial, and emtinal well-being f children and yuth. This hlds true in the animal kingdm as well. “Hrses are knwn t engage in play almst as sn as they are brn. Once they can walk, they immediately start t gallp, frlic and buck, develping the mtr skills they may need when they’re mature,” ntes BBC Earth.
But alng with mtr skills, play als teaches animals essential hunting and survival skills. Natural-brn predatrs, such as kestrels, use play t develp their hunting skills by practicing with targets that lk like real prey when they’re yung. In the ceans, dlphins chase underwater air rings t fine-tune their snar ( 声 呐 ) skills. And while it’s unclear why bear cubs are s playful, zlgists believe at least sme f their funny behavirs have a mre serius purpse that aids in their survival as adults.
One f the mst imprtant teaching aspects f play is scializatin. These days, fr human kids, that usually means the basics like learning t share, teamwrk, and knwing bundaries. Fr animals, especially thse that live in packs, play gives an understanding f where each animal fits int the cmmunity hierarchy ( 等 级 ). In ways that are remarkably similar t the training which children f traditinal tribal cultures receive, it is thrugh the rules f play that lin cubs, kangar jeys, and wlf pups discver and establish the rles they’ll be expected t perfrm as adults.
S whether it’s chasing in the pasture r hanging frm a tree, it seems that play will always be an inner and fun part f bth human and animal develpment.
What des BBC Earth say abut hrses? A.Hrses ften play in different grups.
Newbrn hrses like t play with their parents.
Hrses can gain sme skills while playing.
Play is vital fr baby hrses’ scial develpment.
Which may be an example f animals’ develping their survival skills?
Dlphins leap ut f water.B.Yung kestrels fllw their real prey. C.Bear cubs play in a funny way.D.Wlf pups stay with their human friends.
What d humans and animals have in cmmn accrding t Paragraph 4?
They have a strng desire t make friends.
They get scialized in a similar way.
They change their scial rles thrugh play.
They gain their scial ranks thrugh cmpetitin.

Its creatrs hped it culd ne day be adapted fr use in space. She spent tw years in the early 1990s sealed inside with seven thers, experiencing everything frm xygen failures t clleagues’ emtinal breakdwns.
Pynter met her future husband, Taber MacCallum, n the prject, and afterward, the cuple frmed Paragn Space Develpment. They began devising bispheres that culd supprt plant and animal life in rbit (太空轨道).
“We shwed it’s pssible fr animals t live in an envirnment they are nt used t:
micrgravity,” Pynter says.
In 2014, Pynter and Maccallum achieved anther first. They led the engineering team that helped frmer Ggle exec Alan Eustace skydive frm the edge f the stratsphere. That’s when it hit them: The balln-parachute system they designed fr Eustace culd be mdified fr turism and research. S they frmed Wrld View, with MacCallum serving as chief technical fficer.
The cmpany has a cntract with NASA t determine if the system culd smeday be used t gather data n Mars. “Taking stratllites and flying them n ther planets,” Pynter says, “that’s definitely a part f the big dream.”
Stratllites are different frm traditinal satellites in that they can.
stay mtinless in space
mve abut in a bigger area
prvide emergency cmmunicatins
survive better in a situatin withut gravity
What can be inferred frm the passage abut Bisphere 2?
It was adapted frm a spaceship that used t wrk in space.
It was intended t becme an ideal place fr space research.
The participants all experienced sme kind f emtinal breakdwn.
The participants were islated frm the utside wrld fr sme time.

D.Pynter and Maccallum hpe t achieve mre firsts in their career.

Partnering with NASA t d research n ther planets. B.Using ballns t send turists r researchers int space. C.Giving peple mre pprtunities t try extreme sprts in space.
D.Wrking with fd cmpanies t send fd t astrnauts in space.
