18. What percentage of seniors in the UK would talk with three people a week at most?
A. About 55%. B. Just 26%. C. Over 20%.
19. What were more than half of seniors afraid of?
A. Leaving their homes. B. Parting from their children. C. Taking early retirement.
20. What did the survey of 2,000 British aged 16—45 show?
A. A minority of them worried about their elder years.
B. One-third of them wanted to help seniors.
C. 30% of them felt too shy to talk with seniors.
【答案】18. C 19. A 20. C
【解析】
【原文】M: According to the survey of 1, 896 seniors in the United Kingdom, more than one in five would have a conversation with no more than three people over the span of an entire week! That translated to nearly 2. 6 million elderly folks who didn’t enjoy regular human contact on a daily basis. Perhaps the most alarming is that researchers said an alarming 225,000 individuals would go a week without talking to anyone face-to-face.
The survey also revealed that over half of seniors were willing to take early retirement. They said they knew they could be taken good care of if they took their children’s advice, moving into the nursing homes. But they were unable to accept this idea. They were so scared of leaving their only homes they had lived for most of their lives.
Meanwhile, another survey of 2, 000 people aged 16-45 in the UK showed that 55% of younger folks admitted to worrying about being lonely in their elder years. With that in mind, two-thirds of those people said they wanted to do something to help boost the confidence of a lonely senior, but 37% worried that such a gesture wouldn’t be well-received. Another 30% felt too shy to spark up a conversation with seniors. 27% admitted they were not sure how to help, and a quarter said they were simply too busy themselves.

Yvon Chouinard, who started the company Patagonia, gave all the stocks of the company to a trust and a non-profit group in September 2022.
Mr Chouinard is a rock climber who began climbing in the 1960s. Back then, he created a company that made climbing equipment. The business closed, but Mr Chouinard was left with a lifelong love of the outdoors and a respect for the environment.
Mr Chouinard began Patagonia in the 1970s. Patagonia sells clothes aimed at outdoor activities. Over time, the company changed the way it did business to do a better job of protecting the environment. Since 1986, Patagonia has given 1% of the money it makes from sales to groups that work to protect the environment.
Mr Chouinard, who is now 83 years old, was worried about what might happened after he died. He made the decision after considering other options, including selling the company and donating the profits. “But we couldn’t be sure a new owner would maintain our values or keep our team of people around the world employed,” he said. So he came up with a new and unusual plan: he gave his company away. And he did it in a way that helped protect both the company and the environment.
Mr Chouinard gave away all the voting stock of the company(2% of the total stock)to a small group called the Patagonia Purpose Trust. It will make all the decisions about the way the company is managed. The other 98% of the company has been given to a non-profit group called the Holdfast Collective and it will use every dollar received from Patagonia to protect nature and biodiversity.
24. What do we know about Patagonia?
A. It has a history of more than 60 years.
B. It is a company making climbing equipment.
C. It pays special attention to environmental protection.
D. It is a non-profit organization fighting against climate change.
25. What was Mr Chouinard’s concern about selling the company?
A. Patagonia would become non-profit.
B. Patagonia would be run in a different way.
C Patagonia would be managed in the wrong hand.
D. Patagonia would encounter a great economic challenge.
26. What are Mr Chouinard’s personalities?
A. Tolerant and generous B. Caring and far-sighted
C. Hardworking and warm-hearted D. Optimistic and perseverant
27. Which proverb can best describe Mr Chouinard’s plan?
A. Kill two birds with a stone. B. Two heads are better than one.
C. Actions speak louder than words. D. Where there is a will, there is a way.
【答案】24. C 25. B 26. B 27. A

C
A robot may be defined as a machine that can be programmed to perform acts automatically. With the increase in high technology, robots are taking over boring or inconvenient work in many areas of life.
One area where robots are making an appearance is farming. There is a robotic revolution going on in the milking industry, and cows, as well as farmers are experiencing the benefits. The advantage for the cows is that they can choose when and how many times a day they want to be milked. On the other hand, farmers no longer have to get up at 4 am every day to go to the milking sheds and this makes a huge difference to their way of life.
In traditional farming, cows are milked twice a day, in the morning and the evening, mainly because: this is the most convenient way for farmers to get two milking sessions completed in one day. However, this is not necessarily the best way for each individual cow. Because the robots are programmed to milk the cows whenever they arrive, the cows can be milked once, twice or even four times a day. It is an entirely voluntary system for the cows. They decide.
Farmers report that midnight is a particularly busy time at the milking shed. The interesting thing is the cows like the system once they get used to it. Farmers report that milk production increases, the cows live longer and they seem far more relaxed.
The computerized robotic system is entirely automatic. As the cows enter the facility, they are weighed, milked and productivity and health checks are carried out. The facility cleans itself at regular intervals(间隔)and if there is a problem, the robot sends the farmer a message.
Equipping a farm with robots is not cheap. However, farmers who have installed the robotic milking sheds, say they would never go back to the old system. The commonly reported sight of cows queuing patiently in front of their favourite robot must mean the cows like it too.
28. What is the purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To talk about a kind of robot. B. To tell the importance of robots.
C. To introduce the applications of robots. D. To provide the definition of robotic system.
29. What benefit may robots bring to the cows according to the text?
A. They can be freer to be milked. B. They can be milked twice a day.
C. They can choose the day to be milked. D. They can get up at 4 am to be milked.
30. Which of the following would the author probably agree?
A. The robotic system is entirely automatic except for health checks.
B. The robotic system is so expensive that farmers will never install one.
C. The robotic system is voluntary for cows to be milked of their own free will.
D. Morning and evening are the two most convenient milking sessions for cows.
31. What would be the best title for the text?
A. A robotic revolution in milking B. Cows favourite helper
C. Hands free for the farmers D. An expensive milking shed
【答案】28. C 29. A 30. C 31. A

There is a robotic revolution going on in the milking industry, and cows, as well as farmers are experiencing the benefits.(机器人正在出现的一个领域是农业。挤奶行业正在进行一场机器人革命,奶牛和农民都在从中受益)”再结合全文可知,本文主要讲述了一种挤奶机器人,以及它对奶牛和农民的好处,所以A项“挤奶的机器人改革”是本文最好的标题。故选A项。
D
Those who don’t live in cities often complain about or feel surprised at the fact that strangers don’t talk to each other in urban public places. They feel sorry about the way we seem to increasingly get lost in mobile devices, seemingly oblivious to what’s going on around us. But sociologists recognize that the space we give each other in the urban places serves an important social function.
Well-known sociologist Erving Goffman developed the concept of “civil inattention” in his book Behavior in Public Places. Far from ignoring those around us, Goffman proved through years of studying people in public that what we’re actually doing is pretending to be unaware of what others are doing around us, therefore providing them a sense of privacy, as they do the same for us. Goffman proved in his research that civil inattention typically involves at first a mirror form of social interaction, like very brief eye contact, the exchange of head nods, or weak smiles. Following that, both parties then typically shin their eyes from the other party.
Goffman theorized that what we achieve, socially speaking, with this kind of interaction, is mutual (相互的) recognition that the other present causes no threat to our security, and we both agree, tacitly (默契地), to let the other alone to do as they please. When we provide civil inattention to others, we effectively approve their behavior. Sometimes, we use civil inattention to save face when we’ve done something we feel embarrassed by, or to help manage the embarrassment that another might feel if we witness them trip, or drop something.
Civil inattention is thus not a problem, but an important part of maintaining social order in public. For this reason, problems arise when this norm (规范) is broken. Because we expect it from others and see it as normal behavior, we may feel threatened by someone who doesn’t give it to us. This is why women feel threatened by those who catcall (发嘘声)to them, and why for some men, simply being stared at by another is enough to cause a physical fight.
32. How does the author begin this text?
A. By giving people a warning.
B. By giving some people’s feelings.
C. By explaining a way of socializing.
D. By giving a problem with technology.
33. What does the underlined phrase “oblivious to” in Paragraph 1 most probably mean?
A. curious about
B. unsure about
C. tired of
D. unaware of
34. What do we actually mean when we look away from a stranger, according to Goffman?
A. We are ignoring him on a rude basis.
B. We are showing our respect for others’ privacy.
C. We are protecting ourselves from physical attacks.
D. We are worrying that we could lose belongings.
35. What can be learned from the text about civil inattention?
A. Civil inattention has positive effects on social interaction.
B. Civil inattention helps save face when we’ve done something wrong.
C. Civil inattention is unlinked to social interaction according to Goffman.
D. Civil inattention is a type of normal behavior which we may feel threatened.
【答案】32. C 33. D 34. B 35. A

Following that, both parties then typically shin their eyes from the other party.(戈夫曼并没有忽视我们周围的人,而是通过多年在公共场合对人们的研究证明,我们实际上在做的是假装不知道周围的人在做什么,从而为他们提供一种隐私感,因为他们也在为我们做同样的事情。

Almost 40% of people surveyed in 13 countries have reported sleep issues over the past two years, according to the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine. It’s normal to wake up at night, especially as you age, but negative news can activate your mind and make it hard to fall asleep. ____36____ The following tips can help, too.
Test your pillow.
If you bought your pillow in 2020, guess what? It’s already old. The National Sleep Foundation recommends replacing them every one to two years. A pillow past its prime can cause neck and shoulder pain—and restless sleep. ____37____ If you sleep on your back, look for a thinner pillow. If you sleep on your side, a thicker pillow is better.
Get active during the day.
____38____ It can also increase the amount of time you spend in the deep stages of sleep at night. Try to stay active during the day by participating in activities that you enjoy. Just don’t work out too close to bedtime or it may further interfere with your sleep.
____39____
Want to reduce those annoying nighttime trips to the bathroom? Cut back on peanuts and crisps. In a Japanese study, researchers followed 321 patients with high-salt diets and sleep issues for 12 weeks. When people cut down on salt, their average bathroom trips decreased from twice a night to once.
Tackle your troubles before dinner.
If you need an airing of grievances, don’t wait until nighttime. “Right before dinner is a good time to work things out,” says Ashley Mason, a professor at the University of California. If you start an argument after dinner, your quarreling can continue until bedtime. ____40____
A. Keep a healthy diet.
B. Skip salty snacks before bed.
C Regular exercise can help ease stress and anxiety.
D. A pillow is really of great importance to your sleep.
E. To purchase the right one, determine your sleep style.

Catherine was a young girl. From an earlier age, her parents taught her to be kind-hearted, and she always was. And she lived a happy life in a warm family. Unluckily, one day her father had an accident. His right leg was hurt badly and needed an expensive operation.
Her family couldn’t afford to pay for it. Although their friends and relatives all tried their best to offer help but it was far from enough. So the operation was delayed and they were unsure what to do next.
One day, walking down the street to a bookstore nearby, Catherine noticed an old man trying hard to climb the steps to a nearby park. The old man with Alzheimer’s disease left home several days ago and ended up wandering around the streets while his son, Dr. White, a doctor of the City Hospital, had been trying to find him but in vain.
“He can’t climb the steps. He looks so weak and tired,” Catherine said to herself. Without hesitation, she ran over to him.
“Sir, let me help you!” she said, warm-hearted.
The man made no response. Then Catherine came closer to him and repeated it. Slowly raising his head, the man looked at her, surprised. Catherine gave him a smile and then helped him climb the steps, with her hands supporting his. “Your hands are shaking!” Catherine said anxiously. “Are you okay?”
“I’m so hungry,” he murmured in a low voice. “I want to walk…to the park for…a rest, and I want to find...something…to eat.” After helping him sit on a park bench, Catherine rushed home and returned with some food, only to find that the man was lying on the ground, fainted and senseless. “Sir, please wake up!” she cried in anxiety. The man didn’t respond. “What should I do?” she wondered eagerly.

Looking around, she noticed a woman standing meters away talking on her phone. She hurried to her for help. “Excuse me, could you help the old man over there?” she pointed. The woman smiled, “Sure!” Quickly leading the lady to the old man, who was still unconscious, Catherine urged the woman to dial 911 at once. When the ambulance arrived, Catherine offered to accompany him to the City Hospital. Shortly after, Dr White, who happened to be on duty, rushed to check on the old man.
“He’s my dad! Where did you find him?” Dr. White cried. Catherine briefly explained to Dr. White what had happened. Getting proper treatment, the old man came to life gradually. Dr. White thanked Catherine for her timely help, asking “Is there something I can do in return for your kindness?” “Yes, please! My father needs an operation. But we don’t have enough money.” Catherine replied in a low voice. Dr. White promised to perform the operation on her father and cover the expense. Moved into tears, Catherine had never thought one good turn deserved another.
