BEST CULTURAL FESTIVALS IN THE WORLD
If you’re planning on hitting a cultural festival this year, make sure you check out the background information about some of them.
    BURNING MAN (NEVADA, USA)
Burning Man started in 1986, when Larry Harvey and Jerry James built a 8-foot-tall wooden figure and dragged it to San Francisco’s Baker Beach. They lit it on fire and thus one of the world’s strangest, wildest parties was born. It takes place from the last Sunday in August to Labor Day, with an emphasis on freedom, creativity, and self-expression.
    CARNIVAL (RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL)
Arguably the biggest festival in the world, Brazil’s Carnival is widely considered “the greatest show on Earth”. The event takes place in February or March, attracting nearly 5 million people who’re baking in the heat each year. There are annual samba competitions for the celebration, and the carnival parades are usually the stuff of legend.
ICE & SNOW SCULPTURE FESTIVAL (HARBIN, CHINA)
Located in Northeast China, Harbin receives some seriously cold winter winds blowing over from Siberia. So why would any healthy person want to visit for this month-long Chinese festival, which officially starts on January 5. Because it’s home to the largest ice sculptures in the world, and the celebration takes over the entire city. Activities in the area during the festival include touring ice lantern exhibitions and swimming in the river’s cold waters.
    KING’S DAY (AMSTERDAM, NETHERLANDS)
The rest of the world could learn a thing or two from the Netherlands about properly celebrating the national governor’s birthday. King’s Day is now officially celebrated on April 27 and includes an official government ceremony followed by sporting competitions and family-friendly celebrations. The great climate also makes for ideal conditions for a country-wide flea market you have to see to believe.
    1. Which festival can people attend in August?
    A. Burning Man. B. Carnival.
    C. Ice & Snow Sculpture Festival. D. King’s Day.
    2. What do Carnival and Ice & Snow Sculpture Festival have in common?
    A. They share religious origins.
    B. They attract visitors most at night.
    C. They include underwater activities.
    D. They are held in extreme temperatures.
    3. What is special about King’s Day?

Paying off student loans (贷款) can be challenging and stressful. It may mean starting out one’s life with debt. This is exactly what college basketball star Anthony Leal did not want for his beloved sister.
Anthony Leal, smart and athletic, is a business major at Indiana University and plays as a point guard for the Indiana Hoosiers. When he found out that his sister had a huge amount to pay in student loans, he thought of taking advantage of the benefits he could get from playing basketball. In 2021, NCAA allowed college athletes like Leal to earn promotional money through photograph signing, social media interactions, advertising campaigns, and even teaching camps and lessons. Thanks to it, Leal was able to save money and helped take off the burden on his sister’s shoulders.
On Christmas day, he surprised his sister Lauren by letting her know what he’s been up to in the past two years. Lauren was very emotional after reading her brother’s heartwarming note. “There is no doubt that I have made it to where I am today because of you,” Leal wrote. “Someone like you deserves no burdens or restrictions in life, and I feel that the best way to help with that is by paying off your student loan debt.” Besides looking back on several precious moments in their childhood, Leal also mentioned in the note that he didn’t expect his sister to pay back the money. Instead, he hoped she would pay it forward.
Lauren was grateful for her brother’s huge efforts to pay off her student loans. “After those things were done, I was going to sit down and get a settled plan,” said Lauren. “I can go full steam ahead in my future and what I want to accomplish, what I want to do, without having that just weighing me down and holding me back. So it’s just incredible,” she said.

Birds fly more efficiently by folding their wings during the upstroke (上行运动), according to a recent study led by Lund University in Sweden. The results could mean that wing-folding is the next step in increasing the advancing efficiency of flapping drones (无人机).
Even previous to birds, extinct bird-like dinosaurs benefited from folding their wings as they developed active flight. Among flying animals alive today, birds are the most efficient. This makes them particularly interesting as inspiration for the development of drones. However, determining which flapping strategy is the best requires aerodynamic studies of various ways of flapping the wings. Therefore, a Swedish research team has constructed a robotic wing that can achieve just that — flapping like a bird, and beyond.
“We have built a robotic wing that flap more like a bird than previous robots. By measuring the performance of the wing in our wind tunnel, we have studied how different ways of achieving the wing upstroke affect force and energy in flight,” says Christoffer. He adds that “The new robotic wing can be used to answer questions about bird flight that would be impossible simply by observing flying birds. Research into the flight ability of living birds is limited to the flapping movement that the bird actually uses.” The research explains why birds flap the way they do, by finding out which movement patterns create the most force and are the most efficient.
Based on the result, there are many potential uses for drones where these insights can be put to good use. “Flapping drones could be used in many fields, like delivering goods, but they would need to be efficient enough and able to lift the extra weight this involves. How the wings move is of great importance for performance, so this is where our research could come in handy,” concludes Christoffer.
    8. How does the author introduce the topic?
    A. By raising an opinion. B. By giving an example.
    C. By stating a study result. D. By introducing an invention.
    9. Why did the team construct a robotic wing?
    A. To collect the flying data of birds.
    B. To decide the best way of flapping.
    C. To prove the advantages of drones.
    D. To find out the most efficient flying animals.
    10. What can be inferred from Paragraph 3?
    A. The research has some limitations.
    B. The research focused on birds flapping.
    C. The robotic wing improves birds’ flight.
    D. The robotic wing performs better than birds.
    11. What may Christoffer agree?
    A. The drone has been widely used.
    B. The research needs more support.
    C. Flapping wings are of great importance.
    D. The research may have many applications.
    【答案】8. C 9. B 10. B 11. D

As COVID-19 spread around the globe this spring, people sought comfort in music. That they have used music to connect, comfort, and lift spirits during these unsettling times comes as no surprise to David Silbersweig, chairman of the Department of Psychiatry (精神病学) at Brigham and his partner, Haddad.
Silbersweig and Haddad are both musicians with lasting interests in how music excites the brain — and how it can be used to improve health. They found when people are dealing with very stressful situations, music is universally accepted as something helpful during these periods.
Silbersweig explained that the process by which they recognize a series of sounds as music is incredibly complex. It starts with sound waves entering the ear, striking the eardrum, and causing vibrations (振动) that are transformed into electric signals. These signals travel to the brainstem, then they spread to activate different parts of the brain. It is noteworthy that different parts of the brain are activated, depending on the type of music and whether we are listening, playing, learning, or composing music.
Music can change brain structure and function, both after being heard immediately and repeatedly, according to the research. These changes in brain connectivity suggest opportunities to activate certain regions to promote recovery. Silbersweig and Haddad look forward to using cutting-edge brain research to build on what’s already known about the amazing power of music to help patients. The pair find people with short-term memory loss from Alzheimer’s disease often recognize familiar songs like “Happy Birthday” because they have been stored into their brain’s long-term memory.
Haddad witnessed this response while performing for patients in hospitals. She noted, “There are many patients who are essentially seated, lying down, eyes closed, not able to communicate. But when you play a song that they recognize from their youth, their eyes light up. They’re sitting up and smiling, too. It’s just incredible.”
    12. What can music do according to the first two paragraphs?
    A. Stop the spread of disease. B. Promote scientific research.
    C. Cheer people up in hard times. D. Improve people’s learning ability.
    13. What does the underlined word “It” refer to in Paragraph 3?
    A. The brain. B. The process. C. The research. D. The music.
    14. What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
    A. The findings of the research. B. The methods of the research.
    C. The different types of music. D. The changes of brain structure.
    15. What did Haddad think of the patients’ response?
    A. Worrying. B. Puzzling. C. Satisfying. D. Amazing.
    【答案】12. C 13. B 14. A 15. D
    【解析】

    第二节(满分25分)
    47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Krymzen, aged 10 and her sister Samara Wagner, aged 9, lived in Edmonton, near the North Saskatchewan River. It was 4 p.m. on Easter Sunday and there was still snow on the ground. The sisters dressed in their favorite T-shirts and pink leggings ran to the woodland behind their home. They loved Rundle Park in the river valley. It was a perfect place to play while their mom, Miranda Wagner, was busy preparing the family’s festive dinner.
Before long, they got bored. They decided to do something different. Krymzen led the way and Samara followed. They were heading to the one place their mom had told them never to go—the river. They started taking little careful steps across the ice, dipping their rubber boots into the water. Then they heard a big crack.
After hearing the crack, Krymzen turned around fast and got back to safety. But Samara didn’t. She fell into the cold river. Seeing the dangerous situation, she ran back to Samara. “Samara, can you reach my hand?” she cried as her sister struggled in the water.
Not far away from the river, a young couple Adam and Kelsey Shaw were walking their dog Rocky, an eight-year-old husky. They were crossing the Rundle Park footbridge on the way back to the parking lot when they heard screams.
They looked over the side of the bridge and spotted a girl who had fallen through the ice and another trying to pull her to safety. “We see you!” They shouted down to them. “Help is coming!” Adam told Kelsey to call an ambulance. Then he turned to the dog. “Rocky,” he said, “we’re going down.” He and Rocky slipped and slid down the same hill the girls took just minutes earlier.
    注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Adam and his dog managed to reach the crack.
    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Luckily, the ambulance arrived in time to rush Samara to hospital.
    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 Adam and his dog managed to reach the crack. At this moment, if the girl had also slipped into the crack due to pulling the other, the thing would have been even worse. Adam quickly grabbed the girl’s clothes and pulled her to safety, but the other, Samara, was quickly washed away by the water. At this moment, the brave dog Rocky bravely jumped into the cold water, bit her by the clothes, and struggled to swim back to Adam. Adam took her arms and pulled her up. But Samara was already unconscious.
Luckily, the ambulance arrived in time to rush Samara to hospital. The doctors treated her immediately, and she was finally saved. By then Miranda Wagner, the mother of the girls who had been notified, had arrived. The doctor said, “Two more minutes, and Samara would have been gone.” Wagner was grateful that the girls were doing well and she hoped to meet their rescuer. She said, “I would just give him a big hug and tell him he’s my angel.”

    ①拖拉:pull/drag
    ②治疗:treat/ cure
    ③拯救:save/rescue
    情绪类
