阅读下面短文,完成 51 至 56 题。(共 10 分)
There are some things that are almost impossible to say to our close friends — especially if we want (A) them to be our friends for life. Are you wondering what problems others have?
“I can’t stand your other friends.”
My best friend, Kate, sometimes hangs out with some people that I really don’t like. I think they have a bad influence on her, and she only spends time with them because they are “cool”. Could you tell me if I should bring the matter up with her, or if it would be better for me to keep quiet? I don’t want to lose her as a friend.
— Linda
“I won’t help you cheat.”
(B) My closest friend, Kim, has lost interest in school and studying. He says he’s bored with the whole thing, so he often asks me whether I’ll let him copy my homework. By now I’ve said no, but he keeps asking me. I told him, “I think we’ll get in trouble.” but he just laughed and told me not to worry. I don’t want to put my grades at risk, but I’m afraid to face my friend about this, so I just keep avoiding the topic. How can I get him to stop asking? I was wondering if you could give me some suggestions for dealing with my problem.
— Mike
“No, I CAN’T do that for you!”
Anna is my best friend. We get along with each other well, but she is asking me to do things for her all the time. “Could you help me pick out some new clothes? Would you mind if I borrowed your bike? Can you look after my apartment while I’m away?” And these are just a few examples. I’ve said yes so many times that now I’m afraid I’ll hurt her feelings if I say no. Any ideas? — Amy

Drones are like airplanes, only without a pilot. No one without a pilot’s license should be allowed to have one.
Something bad or unexpected can happen when people send up a self-controlled flying machine like a drone without knowing how to really control it. Drones can become flyaways, and can be caught up on a jet stream (喷气流) and blown away. A falling drone can do much damage (损害) to buildings and people.
Though drones can be harmful, they can be very helpful.
At a sports event, drones can be used to give the spectators (观众) a view from above or help coaches see how their players are doing.
They are also becoming a useful tool for firefighters, helping them find and fight wildfires. Drones can watch secretly on populations of animals in the wild, especially endangered ones.
In some faraway places in the world, drones are the fastest way to send medicine to people who are in great need of it.
Some people think drones can only be used by governments to help when needed. Others think that if rules are obeyed, there should be little risk to people and property (财产).

The sun was falling behind the hills. Andrea was driving back home to Brockboune. Then she saw an old lady, standing by the road, with a sign saying “Brockboune” in her hand,
Andrea stopped the car. When the old lady got in, Andrea could see that she was not that little. She was in a long dress and had a hat pulled down low over her eyes. She put her big brown shopping bag down onto the floor.
“Do you live in Brockboune?” asked Andrea. “No, dear,” answered the old lady in a low voice, “I’m just going to visit a friend, but my car won’t start, so I decided to hitchhike.”
Something in the way the lady spoke made Andrea uneasy. Andrea secretly studied the half-covered face, the shapeless body, the arms with their thick black hairs... Thick black hairs? Andrea’s blood froze. This wasn’t a woman. It was a man!
Her heart was beating wildly and her mind raced. Then suddenly, an idea came up to her. She stopped the car in a sudden. “My God!” she shouted, “A child! Did you see the child? I think I hit her!” “I didn’t see anything,” the “old lady” said, “I don’t think you hit anything,” “I’m sure it was a child!” shouted Andrea. “Could you just get out and have a look?” The “old lady” slowly opened the car door, leaving her bag inside. Dear Mr. Hunt,
My problem is that I can’t get on with my family. Relations between my parents have become difficult. They fight a lot, and I really don’t like it. It’s the only communication they have. I don’t know if I should say anything to them about this. When they argue, it’s like a big, black cloud hanging over our home. Also, my elder brother is not very nice to me. He always refuses to let me watch my favorite TV show. Instead he watches whatever he wants until late at night. I don’t think this is fair. At home I always feel lonely and nervous. Is that normal? What can I do?
Sad and Thirteen
Dear Sad and Thirteen,
It’s not easy being your age, and it’s normal to have these feelings. Why don’t you talk about these feelings with your family? If your parents are having problems, you should offer to help. Maybe you could do more jobs around the house so that they have more time for proper communication. Secondly, why don’t you sit down and communicate with your brother? You should explain that you don’t mind him watching TV all the time. However, he should let you watch your favorite show. I hope things will be better for you soon.

IX. (河北) 任务型阅读(共5小题,每小题2分,计10分)
阅读短文,并按要求完成66~70题。
(河北)Critical thinking (批判性思维) is trying to improve the way you think. People use critical thinking in every area of life to solve problems and evaluate claims (评估主张).
Like every other skill, critical thinking takes practice. When a problem comes our way, we need to think critically to decide how to solve it. When we see an advertisement, for example, we should stop and think. Advertisements are made to make people feel certain that they are true, and then people can buy the products. But is what the advertisement says true? Is it making a claim? Or does it only interest us? Critical thinking is important and stops us from making poor choices. In fact, we are using it if we ask questions naturally about what we see.
Practice makes perfect. While you are growing in critical thinking, you’ll become a wiser and more thoughtful person. There are many ways of doing practice. Here are a few:
★Read about a topic people disagree on. Look at articles or books on all sides of the subject. For each side of the subject, think carefully and evaluate it.
★When you see or hear a claim, ask questions about it. Who is making the claim and why?
★Evaluate your own thinking. Where and why do you think uncritically? How can you improve?
Critical thinking should be part of everything we do. It may help you to succeed at work or school. Make yourself into a habit of critical thinking. Change your thoughts and change your world.

It is said that everyone has two boxes hung on our necks. The small box at the front is full of other people's mistakes, while the big one at the back is filled with our own shortcomings(缺点). Most of time, it’s easy to find other people's mistakes. It's hard for us to see our mistakes behind us.

62.He could not walk before he was four (years old).
63. The movie Rain Man won an Oscar for Best Picture( in 1988).
64. 他习惯了成为关注的焦点/中心。
65. Peek was not only an amazing man but also a real Rain Man.
【解析】
61. It took him less than an hour to read a book. / It took him less than an hour to finish reading a book. /He spent less than an hour reading a book. 本题考查汉译英。本句中的关键是把 “花时间看书”翻译正确,可用It took sb. some time to do sth.或Sb. spent some time doing sth.两种句型中的任一个来表达。
62.He could not walk before he was four (years old). 本题考查简单句改为复合句。此句要改为复合句,只能将时间状语“before four years old”改为时间状语从句before he was four (years old)。
63. The movie Rain Man won an Oscar for Best Picture( in 1988).本题考查代词的指代用法。指示代词this通常指代上一句或上一句中的部分内容,并且由此句中this作主语,句意是“这改变了Peek的生活”,所以this只能是指代前文中The movie Rain Man won an Oscar for Best Picture( in 1988)这件事。
64. 他习惯了成为关注的焦点/中心。本题考查英译汉。这里的关键是把“get used to doing”(习惯于做某事)和“the center of attention”(关注的焦点/中心)翻译准确。
65. Peek was not only an amazing man but also a real Rain Man. 本题考查主旨大意。综合整篇短文可知文中结尾段的首句“Peek was not only an amazing man but also a real Rain Man.”提示了文章的中心:Peek不仅仅是一位让人惊讶的人,而且是一位真正的“雨人”(同名影片中用亲情和爱来保护家人的人)。

Dinosaurs (恐龙) once lived on the earth for a long time. They suddenly disappeared millions of years ago. What happened to them? That’s still a mystery. People never stop searching for the answer.
Some US scientists say it is because there were not enough male (雄性的) dinosaurs. They got this idea after researching crocodiles (鳄鱼).
Mother crocodiles lay eggs and later baby crocodiles come out. The local temperature decides the sex (性别) of the baby crocodile. When the eggs are at a temperature of 26 ℃ to 30℃, the babies are all girls; when the temperature is 30℃ to 34℃, there are both boys and girls; when it is 34℃ to 36℃, only boys are born.
Dinosaurs’ babies also came from eggs. So scientists have given us a new picture: millions of years ago, it suddenly became very cold. Almost all dinosaur babies were girls. There were fewer and fewer male dinosaurs. Mother dinosaurs could not give birth to more babies. Finally , these powerful animals disappeared.

People in different countries speak different languages. But is there a language that can be understood by everyone in the world? Emojis might be the first truly universal(通用的)language.
Emojis are a kind of special language. Pictures are used to put meaning across. A group called the Unicode Consortium is in charge of choosing official(官方的)emojis. It has added new emojis every year since 2014. These new emojis do not come out of nowhere. They come from what people think about, like and care about.
Emojis can be used to represent(代表)different groups of people. In 2015, emojis faces with different skin tones( 肤色) were added. In 2016, different jobs were added, such as doctor, police officer and painter along with female versions of these jobs. This year, emojis of disabled people were added, including emojis of blind people and people in wheel chairs.
But there is also more to emojis. They can also refer to pop culture and new cultural trends. New emojis in have included several animals, such as sloths (树懒) and flamingos (火烈鸟). These animals are not very common but are known to many people. For example, sloths have become popular thanks to the 2016 film Zootopia(《疯狂动物城》). Many fashion designers have included flamingos in their designs in recent years. This animal makes people feel like they're on tropical(热带)vacation.

(海南)We usually go to see a doctor when we are ill. Doctors may give us some medicine, and the medicine often makes us feel better.
But sometimes the doctor’s medicine doesn’t work. This happened to one man, Thomas Smith. He was ill in hospital, but he wasn’t getting well. Then he found a new “doctor” inside himself. He saw funny films. He read funny books. And something wonderful happened. Laughing took away his pain after half a year. He could have a good night’s rest. His own happy feeling helped him get well again. He wrote his story in his book. He said laughing was very useful. It was the best “medicine”.
Another man, Simon Beck, was also ill, and he had a serious pain in his back. The doctor couldn’t stop it, so the man began to “picture” his pain. In his head he “drew” a picture of a dog. He imagined it to be a real dog. And it was hurting him. Then the man talked softly to the dog. He put his hand on the dog’s head and made friends with it. One year later, his pain went away!

(·山东东营) Reading is fun! Besides for fun, we can also analyze (分析) texts to learn more from the texts and more about the texts. One way we can do this is by finding out the theme of the texts.
The theme of a text is the “big idea” that runs through the text, connecting the characters and events. It is what the writer wants to tell us through the story. Usually the theme of a text isn’t told directly, you have to use clues (线索) in the text to find it out. 83 Themes can be ideas like family, friendship, love and so on. The theme might not be just one word, but it might be an idea such as “Friendship is important.” There may also be more than one theme in a story. How can we find out the theme of a text? The following steps may help you.
Read through the whole text. Usually characters change as the story goes on, so the theme you get at the beginning might not be true at the end! For this reason, you need to read through the whole text first.
Find out the clue. After reading the whole text, try to answer the following questions. What important events happened during the story? What was the problem? How did the problem get solved? How did the character(s) change? What did the character(s) learn? The answers may help you to get the clues.
Get the big idea. Read again for the writer’s purpose of the text by answering the following questions. Was most of the plot(情节) around friendship? Did the characters solve problems with their families? Did the main character learn the importance of friendship? If one of the answers is “yes”, you may get the big idea.
Check the big idea out. If you’ve found a “big idea”, go through the text to find the evidence (证据) that supports this idea in the text. For example, if there was only one small problem with a character’s family, then “family” might not be the theme of the text. You might find more evidence for other themes.
Have you got the way to find out the theme of a text? 84 Get your favorite book quickly and see if you can find the theme out!
