The listed books may be a nice taste for your coming holidays. Take one and enjoy yourselves!
A Warbler’s Journey
Scott Weidensaul
If tragedy is the excavator (挖掘机) of beauty, the era of our pandemic shutdown showed that. Bird songs rose when noise levels from traffic, airplanes and even barking dogs nosedived. Bird-watching boomed. The world stopped, and birds and people noticed each other. A new book with brilliant illustrations by Nancy Lane, is an epic story of tough migration of a warbler (莺) told through the eyes of two little girls. The story of its adventure is smart, beautiful and a reminder of what’s possible when we notice what we have in common with a tiny bird.
A Lady for a Duke
Alexis Hall
Alexis Hall delivered the romantic comedy of this summer. In the book, friends long thought lost are found and slowly become lovers. Viola Carroll, a veteran (老兵) of the Napoleonic wars, was long assumed dead. Injured on the battlefield, she gave up her family, wealth and title to live as her true self. Then she returns to public life after years of absence and finds love with her sorrow-stricken best friend who’s still mourning her.
The Memory Librarian
Janelle Monáe
While working her day job as a pop star, Janelle Monáe has written plenty of music with science-fiction topics—most recently on her 2018 album Dirty Computer. But seeing as how Monáe tells tales in just about every medium she can get her hands on, including film, it was inescapable that she’d turn to the literary form one day as well. The book is a collection of short stories that pick up the loose threads of Dirty Computer’s. It serves readers tales grounded in the human trials of identity expression, technology, and love, but also reaching through to the worlds of memory and time within.
1. Which of the following books has beautiful pictures?
A. Dirty Computer. B. A Warbler’s Journey.
C. A Lady for a Duke. D. The Memory Librarian.
2. What kind of book is A Lady for a Duke?
A. A sad story. B. A comic story. C. A moral story. D. A science-fiction story.
3. What can we know about Janelle Monáe?
A. Multi-gifted. B. Talkative. C. Outgoing. D. Good-natured.

Beauty From Their Ashes is a group of mothers and daughters who have dealt with the impact that trauma (挫折) brings. With this experience, their goal is to help others by coming to each person from a place of compassion and empathy (共情).
“We have walked this walk,” said Synethia Bland, Marketing Director. “We have already learned how to manage the challenges that a trauma-impacted mother faces each day. Our goal is to communicate that you’re never on this journey alone.”
Everyone goes through adversity. This group hopes to communicate to mothers and daughters that they can rise from these trials to reach places of beauty. Bland says that by providing guidance, hope, and love, women can hold their faith because empathy and compassion are restored in their lives.
“Broken women help other hurting women in realizing their dream and potential,” said Liliana, a certified life coach. Liliana is praised for being a defender of the truth. “The best teachers come from life,” she said.
Liliana ran through her social media, and she saw others in pain: homeless, abused, facing chronic illness. No one gave an encouraging word. No one paid attention, like illness and poverty were a choice. Liliana was overcome with such heart-broken stories. When Liliana found her faith, she said her journey became more difficult. Turning away women in need was not something she was willing to do, so she poured all her resources into this organization.
“You know that in your secret closet, you still have ashes. Just because the world can’t see them doesn’t mean they don’t exist. Some of us just choose not to sit on our hands.”
By showing women how they can rise like a phoenix, the ashes don’t need to be the end of their stories. It can be the beginning of something new.

6. What does the underlined phrase “sit on our hands” in paragraph 6 mean?
A. Sit well. B. Take action. C. Turn a blind eye. D. Lend a hand.
7. What key message does the text convey?
A. Ladies can rise from trials. B. True beauty comes from ashes.
C. Broken women deserve more concern. D. Misfortune can be a new start with help.

The safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage is considered an important part of sustainable development. Among the 629 UNESCO-listed traditions are five entries in Estonia, the most recent of which is the building and use of dugout canoes in the Soomaa region.
Every year, before spring, Soomaa National Park transforms into an almost drowned world, when water from melting snow in the eastern uplands floods the low-lying forests, wetlands, roads and yards of the residents who still live here. The water level rose so high that villagers could roll a dugout canoe right through their windows and into their living rooms. Everyone has had to learn to adapt to the natural annual phenomenon.
Building a dugout canoe requires a good trunk of an aspen, which grows throughout the forests of Estonia. Once cut down, the trees are peeled and shaped like a cigar using an axe. From here, the inside of the boat is carved out to give it shape. Builders cut the frame down to a few centimetres in thickness. A long log fire is then built alongside the canoe, which is filled with several bucketfuls of water and left to warm up. Once the water has evaporated, sticks are squeezed into the frame lengthways to open it up. Aspen is a soft wood and a trunk half a metre across can be expanded into a metre-wide boat. The boat is then left to cool in the shade and is traditionally finished the following spring, once the wood has fully dried, when it’s given its final design and covered with tar.
Aivar Ruukel, one of only five Estonians who still preserve the skill, chooses to build them as a way to connect with the history, As a young man, Ruukel attended workshops led by two master boat builders, both in their 70s at the time. He hopes that by the time he’s 70 there will be more young people doing the same. Enthusiasts hope that its joining the heritage list will safeguard the ancient practice and attract the next generation of boatmasters to keep the tradition alive.
8. Why do villagers have to preserve dugout canoes?
A. To survive floods. B. To go canoeing in the park.
C. To learn about a natural phenomenon. D. To apply for intangible cultural heritage.
9. What’s the right order of building a dugout canoe?
① The boat is left in the shade to dry.
② The inside of the boat is carved out to give it shape.
③ Builders warm up the canoe and open the frame up.
④ The boat is given the design and covered with the tar.
⑤ Builders remove the barks and make the trees into cigar shapes.
A. ⑤③②④① B. ②⑤④①③ C. ⑤②③①④ D. ②③⑤④①
10. Which statement will Ruukel probably agree with?
A. Young people shall become boatmasters.
B. The practice will die out in the next generation.
C. More people are needed to pass on the tradition.
D. One cannot master the skill without learning history.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. Dugout canoes come to life B. Boat building industry in Estonia

The world is on a fast track toward an autonomous future. From off-road tractors and rural transit systems to air vehicles and space exploration, automation will enhance safety, increase efficiency and improve people’s lives. The more we can automate, the more we can protect people’s life and happiness.
To make the autonomous future safe and secure, manufacturers and operators will need reliable, assured positioning, said Michael Ritter, president of Hexagon’s Autonomy & Positioning division. At the HxGN LIVE Global 2022 event, he gave an overview of assured positioning and demonstrated how it provides the foundation for safe autonomy.
Ritter explained how positioning technologies can enable the future of autonomy for good publicity across industries including agriculture, mining and automotive. “We’ve all heard about autonomy,” he said. “What’s one of the big problems there? It doesn’t always work as advertised.” He mentioned Tesla’s AutoPilot as an example. “In our industry, the non-consumer world, we can’t have that,” he added. “We need to have autonomy solutions that we can trust.” “If that is not a hundred percent waterproof, crystal clear, and protected from outside interference (干扰) and cybersecurity threats, you can’t trust that positioning,” he said. “We have to know where we are at all times, and we cannot have that signal falsified (歪曲).”
While Ritter doesn’t think he’ll see the universal use of autonomous vehicles in passenger traffic during his lifetime “because laws will be in the way,” he said applications in “off-road autonomy—construction, mining and agriculture—are here today, which all take place in controllable spaces; laws are not such a big problem,” he said. “This is happening right now. We don’t have to wait 10 to 20 years for that.”
However, a big safety challenge in expanding autonomy is anticipating all the corner cases, or “all the stuff that could happen once in a lifetime,” Ritter said. Those can be overcome by real-life testing, multiplying that with simulation (模拟) “a hundred million times over,” and then going “back into real life” and performing “real, extreme Testing.”
12. What’s Ritter’s purpose of mentioning Tesla’s AutoPilot?
A. To show its good publicity. B. To advocate its assured positioning.
C. To put forward reliable autonomy solutions. D. To serve as a reminder for the non-consumer world.
13. What is Ritter’s attitude towards the development of autonomy according to paragraph 4?
A. Cautious. B. Optimistic. C. Doubtful. D. Objective.
14. What does the underlined word “that” in the last paragraph refer to?
A. Real and extreme testing. B. Real-life testing.
C. A big safe challenge. D. Expanding autonomy.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. Big challenges for future automation. B. The impact of automation on daily life.
C. Necessary regulations for safe automation. D. Different fields of automation development.
D 13. B 14. B 15. A
根据第三段中“What’s one of the big problems there? It doesn’t always work as advertised.(其中的一个大问题是什么?它并不总是像宣传的那样有效。)”以及“ He mentioned Tesla’s AutoPilot as an example. “In our industry, the non-consumer world, we can’t have that,” he added. “We need to have autonomy solutions that we can trust.” (他以特斯拉的自动驾驶仪为例。“在我们这个行业,在非消费领域,我们不能这样做,”他补充说。“我们需要我们可以信任的自主解决方案。”)”可知,此处Ritter提到Tesla’s AutoPilot的目的是给消费者提醒,Tesla’s AutoPilot实际提供的功能并不如所宣传的那样有效。故选D。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“he said applications in 'off-road autonomy—construction, mining and agriculture—are here today, which all take place in controllable spaces; laws are not such a big problem,' he said.'This is happening right now.
根据第二段的“To make the autonomous future safe and secure, manufacturers and operators will need reliable, assured positioning, said Michael Ritter, president of Hexagon’s Autonomy & Positioning division.(Hexagon公司自主与定位部门总裁Michael Ritter表示,为了让未来的自动驾驶汽车更加安全可靠,制造商和运营商需要可靠、可靠的定位。)” 故选A。
From the Hanging Gardens of Babylon to the orange gardens of Seville, urban planners down the ages have taken inspiration from nature. And those living in the concrete and brick jungle have perhaps never appreciated green space more than during the covid-19 pandemic. During lockdowns, citizens have found parks and gardens an unexpected source of calm and joy.
The evidence of positive effects from nature includes studies on specific psychological conditions. ____16____ It can promote positive social interactions and even help generate a sense of meaning to life. Being in green environments boosts various aspects of thinking, including attention, memory and creativity. Equally healthy natural spaces provide us with a whole range of essential “ecosystem services” for free. ____17____
The evolving understanding of nature’s broad health benefits, plus our ongoing pandemic experience, is a big urge to build the green cities. ____18____ The Million Trees Los Angeles initiative and an ambitious greening programme in New York are the inspiring examples in the US.
____19____ Most urban growth in the next decades will occur in developing nations. China encourages the building of parks, green spaces and wildlife passageways in many cities. Admittedly, developing countries face many challenges in building greener cities, but they can learn from the mistakes already made in older-growth cities in the West.
____20____ It is important to make green spaces multipurpose so they meet a variety of needs. Biologist Gretchen Daily, at Stanford University, has pioneered the concept of ecosystem services as a way of evaluating the benefits nature provides and factoring these values into economic decision-making. She also favours combining more natural elements into the built environment, such as green roofs, and even designing buildings that imitate patterns found in nature.
A. How to build green cities is a problem.
B. What does an ideal green city of tomorrow look like?
C. Actually, the trend for urban greening has already begun.
D. This isn’t just a phenomenon in developed countries, either.
E. Clean air and water, nutrient recycling and flood defence are the bonuses.
F. Access to nature can improve sleep, reduce stress and increase happiness.
G. It has a huge impact on people’s perceptions of their health and well-being.
F 17. E 18. C 19. D 20. B

For my fourteenth birthday, my mom offered to take me and several friends to the city nearest our small town to visit a mall, go shopping, eat pizza in the food court, and then catch a movie. It was just the kind of celebration that a teenage girl longed for.
All the friends I’d invited joined me in this birthday party. Yet my best friend Nora didn’t show up. I felt confused why she didn’t tell me she couldn’t make it. Depressed and upset, I went home and decided to call Nora and get some answers.
By the time I reached for the telephone hanging on the wall, I had worked myself into a fit of anger. I struck Nora’s number. W hen she answered, I demanded to know why she had avoided my birthday celebration and me. “Nora, it’s my birthday. And you didn’t come to my party, and you didn’t even let me know. What kind of friend are you?”
Then Nora explained that she’d had to stay home because she had gotten sick. Nora began crying on the phone, hurt and surprised that I was mad at her. “Okay, so you’re sick...” I answered. “How am I supposed to figure out that you’re skipping my birthday party if you don’t tell me?” It only grew worse from there, and Nora wept as we hung up the phone moments later.
The next day, her mother called back. In a peaceful voice, she told me how much I’d hurt her daughter, how much Nora had wanted to join us, and how she had been the one to change Nora’s plans when she didn’t allow her to attend that day. Still thinking only of myself, I ended the call with Nora’s mom and still felt angry. Ever since, we had had no contact.

Nora responded with a message of heartfelt forgiveness.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Years later, Facebook suggested Nora as my online friend. So, I reached out and sent the friend request that Facebook had recommended. Nora accepted and we were now able to keep up with the posts and announcements that we shared via social media. These years has witnessed my regret for that phone call. At that time, I only thought about myself. How selfish I was! I felt guilty about it. I wanted to take this opportunity to apologize to her. I logged into Facebook and began composing an apology letter to Nora. After finishing it, I clicked “Send”.
Nora responded with a message of heartfelt forgiveness. She told me how she’d missed me after that ill-fated birthday celebration weekend. How she wished she had told me about her illness in advance! In that case, there would not have been such a big misunderstanding between us. All this showed that we both cared about each other so much. We promised we would cherish our friendship and not miss each other again. We did bring a sad moment from the past to a healthy conclusion—because I was willing to ask for forgiveness and Nora was willing to grant it.
