    第二部分 阅读理解(共两节, 满分50分)
    第一节:(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
    阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、D)中,选出最佳选项。
    A
Time has always been of great interest to scientist…
Theory 1: According to Caltech cosmologist (宇宙学家) Dr Sean Carroll, the flow of time from past to future may be the symptom of our Universe having emerged from another universe that existed before the Big Bang and then gave birth to our own.
Theory 2: In 1967, two American theorists came up with an equation describing the quantum (量子) state of the whole Universe. Known as the Wheeler-DeWitt equation, it includes many key features of the universe, such as its size. But one aspect is absent: time. Some theorists believe this implies that time only exists in our minds.
Theory 3: According to theorist Prof Lee Smolin at the Perimeter Institute, Canada, the existence of life in the Universe is the result of the laws of physics evolving to their current state over an unlimited number of previous universes. If true, this means that our very existence is proof that time does exist.
Theory 4: In 2009, physicists at the universities of Bristol and Cambridge showed that the passing of time revealed by, say, the cooling of a cup of tea, may be due to quantum effect called ‘entanglement’. This involves the particles (粒子) in the team interacting with their surroundings, being bound together and becoming harder to distinguish from each other—a one-way process that requires the forward progression of time to occur.
Theory 5: Dark energy, the mysterious anti-gravitational force that drives the expansion of the Universe, may be linked to the existence of the arrow of time. Last year, two cosmologists at the Yerevan Physics Institute showed that dark energy leads to the growth of entropy, a measure of disorder, in the Universe.

    21. All the five theories imply that .
    A. time is flexible B. time is constant
    C. time does go forth and back D. time does exist in some way
    22. Which theory doesn’t include time?
    A. Theory 1. B. Theory 2. C. Theory 3. D. Theory 4.
    23. According to the passage, which of the following statements is true of dark energy?
    A. It leads to the existence of multi-universities.
    B. It is what keeps the universe in order.
    C. It is what makes the universe get bigger.
    D. It increases in strength with gravity.
    B
An experimental cleanup device called RemoveDEBRIS has successfully cast a net around a dummy satellite in space, imitating a technique that could one day collect spaceborne garbage.
The test, which was carried out this week, is widely believed to be the first successful demonstration of space cleanup technology, experts told CNN. And it symbolizes an early step toward solving what has already been a critical issue: junk in space.
Millions of pieces of junk are turning around in orbit, the result of 50 years of space travel and few regulations to keep space clean. At orbital speeds, even a small bit of paint crashing with a satellite can cause critical damage.
Various companies have plans to send thousands of new satellites into low-Earth orbit, already the most crowded area.
The RemoveDEBRIS experiment is run by a company and researchers led by the U. K.’s Surrey Space Center and includes Airbus, Airbus-owned Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd. and France’s ArianeGroup.
Guglielmo Aglietti, the director of Surrey Space Center, said that an operational version of the RemoveDEBRlS technology would cast a net that remains fastened to the main satellite so the debris(残渣;废弃物) can be dragged out of orbit. It could target large pieces of junk, including dead satellites up to 10 meters long.
The RemoveDEBRIS satellite will conduct a few more experiments in the coming months, including testing navigation features that could help guide the satellite to a specific piece of debris.
There are still enormous barriers to clear before operational cleanup tasks are underway, he said, and the most discouraging is figuring out how to fund such projects.
Aglietti, the Surrey professor who helped lead the RemoveDEBRIS project, said “The challenge will lie in persuading the relevant authorities to sponsor these tasks.” Aglietti said he hopes RemoveDEBRIS will conduct a few cleanup tasks per year, targeting the largest pieces of junk in the most crowded orbits.
    24. What is the use of the RemoveDEBRIS satellite?
    A. Collecting space wastes.
    B. Demonstrating space technology.
    C. Imitating a developing technique.
    D. Solving serious junk problems.
    25. How does the RemoveDEBRlS satellite work?
    A. By throwing a net to take the junk from orbit.
    B. By fastening it to the main satellite tightly.
    C. By dragging satellites up to 10 meters long.
    D. By targeting large pieces of junk carefully.
    26. What does the underlined word “sponsor” in the last paragraph probably mean?
    A. Accomplish. B. Support. C. Oppose. D. Provide.
    27. What’s the best title for the text?
    A. A Critical Issue: Junk in Space
    B. How RemoveDEBRIS Is Developed
    C. Why the RemoveDEBRIS Satellite Is Invented
    D. Satellite Collects Space Junk for the First Time
    C
Saying farewell to someone you love, even for a night, can be difficult, much less saying goodbye for a lifetime or forever in death. Juliet bid Romeo adieu (再见) for the evening with the words, “Parting is such sweet sorrow.” Sweet sorrow is an oxymoron(矛盾修辞法). But this seeming contradiction is true in the context of relationships.
Relationships are based on feelings, emotions, and passion. Deep friendships and loving relationships are measured by the level of emotional attachment. Emotions intensify over time. People spend time with the people they like. The more one person likes another person, the closer the relationship becomes. Each person in the relationship receives an emotional benefit from knowing the other person.
Saying goodbye means separating from the people who make up a significant part of your emotional identity. Separation, even a temporary absence, from the people you have a deep emotional connection with can cause sorrow because you will no longer be able to enjoy their company.
The sweet side of saying goodbye is the emotional fulfillment of being in a close relationship. The time spent together is emotionally rewarding, especially if that person is seen as a soulmate. Humans are social beings. We seek the love and comfort of other people. Loneliness devastates the human condition and leads to sadness. Sad people will do anything they can to find fulfilling relationships. Likewise, happy people will do anything they can to maintain or enhance relationships. Herein lies the essential point of the emotional problem.
The more intense relationships become, the more devastating the emotional loss that is felt upon separation. The exhilaration(欢欣) of relationships cannot be truly measured without experiencing the overwhelming loss of a deep emotional connection.
Enjoy the company of the person you are with as long as you can; knowing the pain you will feel at the end of the relationship is the true measure of the relationship. If it doesn’t hurt to say goodbye, perhaps it wasn’t worth saying hello.
    28. Which of the word group can create the same effect as “sweet sorrow”?
    A. icy cold B. clicking sound
    C. deafening silence D. endless speech
    29. What can we learn from paragraph 3?
    A. Saying goodbye is unavoidable in our daily life.
    B. The companion of close friends can lessen sorrow.
    C. A person’s identity is connected with relationship.
    D. Separation is the sorrowful part of saying goodbye.
    30. What gives a person emotional satisfaction in social life?
    A. Making more communication with others.
    B. Building deep emotional connections with others.
    C. Comforting friends with love and intense feelings.
    D. Being a thoughtful person by standing in others’ shoes.
    31. What is the main idea of the passage?
    A. Sweet sorrow is very common in close relationships.
    B. The pain of separation is the measure of relationships.
    C. Human beings are eager to get emotional fulfillment.
    D. Happiness is meaningless without sadness to compare it.
    D
On Wednesday, two things happened. In Syria, 80 people were killed by government airstrikes. Meanwhile, in Florida, Elon Musk’s SpaceX successfully launched and fired a sports car into space. Guess which story has dominated mainstream news sites?
The launch of Musk’s Falcon Heavy rocket, the most powerful ever launched by a private company, went off successfully. Musk sent his cherry-red Tesla roadster running toward Mars, launching “a new space age”. The event attracted phenomenal publicity and made the rocket launch a masterstroke of advertising for Tesla.
Meanwhile, in Syria, where hundreds of thousands of refugees (难民) may be forced to return to unsafe homes, a UN human rights coordinator for Syria said despondently (沮丧地) that he was no longer sure why he bothers to videotape the effects of bombing, since nobody ever pays attention. He wondered what level of violence it would take to make the world care.
There is, perhaps, no better way to appreciate the tragedy of 21st-century global inequality than by watching a billionaire spend $90m launching a $100,000 car into space.
Musk said he wanted to participate in a space race because “races are exciting” and that while strapping his car to a rocket may be “silly and fun … silly and fun things are important”. Thus, anyone who mentions the huge waste the project involves, or the various social uses to which these resources could be put, can be dismissed as a killjoy.
But one doesn’t have to hate fun to question the justification for pursuing a costly new space race at exactly this moment. If we examine the situation honestly, it becomes hard to defend a project like this.
A mission to Mars does indeed sound exciting, but it’s important to have our priorities straight. First, perhaps we could make it so that a child no longer dies of malaria every two minutes. Or we could try to address(对付) the level of poverty in Alabama which has become so extreme that the UN investigator did not believe it could occur in a first-world country. Perhaps when violence, poverty and disease are solved, then we can head for the stars.
Many might think that what Elon Musk chooses to do with his billions is Elon Musk’s business alone. If he wanted to spend all his money on medicine for children, that would be nice, but if he’d like to spend it making big explosions and sending his convertible on a million-mile space voyage, that’s his right.
But Musk is only rich enough to afford these money-consuming projects because we have allowed social inequalities to arise in the first place. If wealth were actually distributed fairly in this country, nobody would be in a position to fund his own private space program.
Elon Musk is right: silly and fun things are important. But some of them are an indefensible waste of resources. While there are still humanitarian crises such as that in Syria, nobody can justify vast spending on rocketry experiments.
    32. Why does the writer mention the two pieces of news at the beginning of the passage?
    A. To illustrate the inequality of wealth distribution and the consequent inequality of attention distribution.
    B. To highlight the significance of SpaceX’s successful launch of a rocket and a car into space.
    C. To appeal to the government for more attention to the air strikes and refugee crisis in Syria.
    D. To find out which news dominated the mainstream news sites.
    33. Why did the UN human rights coordinator for Syria feel disappointed?
    A. Because nobody appreciated his work and all the efforts he made.
    B. Because the violence in Syria is not serious enough to make the world care.
    C. Because however hard he tried, nobody seemed to care about the situation in Syria.
    D. Because he had great difficulty videotaping the effects of bombing.
    34. What is implied in Paragraph 6 and 7?
    A. The space project of SpaceX cost the government too much money.
    B. It kills the fun to question the justification of the pursuit of space programs.
    C. Space programs are a waste of money that cannot be justified.
    D. Addressing problems of violence, poverty and diseases should be our top priority.
    35. What does the writer mainly want to tell us?
    A. We should pay equal attention to space projects and solving social problems.
    B. No private companies should be allowed to spend money in rocketry experiments.
    C. The money and resources used in space projects could have been used to deal with various social problems.
    D. Elon Musk should be blamed for misleading the public.

Superman, the first American superhero, appeared in 1938 with his cape (斗篷) and an “S” on his chest. Shortly after his appearance in comics, moviemakers began trying to bring superheroes to the big screen. In the early 1940s, they made their first attempts to bring comic books to life. 36 Instead, they were made as 5 to 10 minutes episodes that would play at movie theaters before the main feature. Unlike today’s superhero films, these serials were aimed mainly at children.
This pattern changed in 1978 when Richard Donner made his first Superman film. First of all, it was aimed at an adult audience. 37 Second, the film’s special effects were very sophisticated (复杂的) for that time. Finally, the Superman film was a departure from earlier superhero films in that it used talented and famous Hollywood actors. 38
Yet another revolution in superhero movies came in the 1990’s and 2000’s, when Computer-Generated Image technology made it possible to recreate even more fantastic landscapes and more monstrous (可怕的) creatures. 39 These films were similar to Donners Superman in that they targeted an adult audience. Watchmen (2009), for instance, was released with an R rating, meaning that it was not intended for children under the age of 17.
40 Their success at the box office continues to attract big-name Hollywood actors and directors and higher production budgets, so lovers of action and adventure should have plenty of reasons to go to the movies for years to come.
    A. Richard Donner was born on April 24, 1930 in New York City.
    B. Most of these early superhero films were not full-length movies.
    C. The film had a complex plot, dealing with themes like love and politics.
    D. As superhero movies are popular every year, it is clear this trend is far from over.
    E. Many films used such technology to make their characters seem terrifyingly real.
    F. Some of those stars were Christopher Reeve, Margot Kidder, and Gene Hackman.
    G. The character of Superman was created by writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster.

    书面表达
    Can Money Buy Happiness?
Opinions are divided on it. Some think yes, while others hold the opposite.
It is true that with enough money one can buy what one wants, living a life of comfort and security. It is equally true that lack of money causes great distress. However, the pursuit of money drives many to cheat and steal, even resulting in corrupt societies.
