Five years ago, when I taught art at a school in Seattle, I used Tinker toys as a test at the beginning of a term to find out something about my students. I put a small set of Tinker toys in front of each student, and said, “Make something out of the Tinker toys. You have 45 minutes today—and 45 minutes each day for the rest of the week.”
A few students hesitated to start. They waited to see what the rest of the class would do. Several others checked the instructions and made something according to one of the model plans provided. Another group built something out of their own imaginations.
Once I had a boy who worked experimentally with Tinker toys in his free time. His constructions filled a shelf in the art classroom and a good part of his bedroom at home. I was delighted at the presence of such a student. Here was an exceptionally creative mind at work. His presence meant that I had an unexpected teaching assistant in class whose creativity would affect other students.
Encouraging this kind of thinking has a downside. I ran the risk of losing those students who had a different style of thinking. Without fail one would declare, “But I’m just not creative.”
“Do you dream at night when you’re asleep?”
“Oh, sure.”
“So tell me one of your most interesting dreams.” The student would tell something wildly imaginative. Flying in the sky or in a time machine or growing three heads. “That’s pretty creative. Who does that for you?”
“Nobody. I do it.”
“Really—at night, when you’re asleep?”
“Sure.”
“Try doing it in the daytime, in class, okay?”
4. Why did the teacher use Tinker toys in class?
A. To know more about the students.
B. To make the lessons more exciting.
C. To attract the students interest in art.
D. To teach the students about toy design.
5. What do we know about the boy mentioned in Paragraph 3?

D. He liked to help his teacher.
6. The underlined word “downside” in Paragraph 4 probably means “___ ”.
A. mistake B. disadvantage
C. difficulty D. trouble
7. Why did the teacher ask the students to talk about their dreams?
A. To help them to see their creativity.
B. To find out about their sleeping habits.
C. To help them to improve their memory.
D. To find out about their ways of thinking.

How often do you exercise? A new study found that most kids aged 12 to 15 weren’t getting enough physical activity. The results were based on about 800 kids. As part of the study, the kids tracked and reported on their own activity levels, and took physical exams.
US fitness guidelines suggest an hour or more of physical activity every day. According to the study, only 1 in 4 US kids get enough physical activity.
“It’s certainly worrying to see that our kids have such a limited amount of physical activity each day,” said Dr. Stephen Pont. He is an expert on children’s health.
Few kids in the study met the guidelines on physical activity that raises the heart rate and makes people breathe harder. Overall, about 25% said they got an hour of that kind of exercise every day. Kids also reported on which activities they did most often outside of school gym class—basketball for boys and running for girls.
The study found that fat teenagers were less active than normal-weight girls and boys. Fat girls were slightly less active than normal-weight girls, but levels were similar among overweight and normal-weight boys. The study also said that the percent of fat children aged 2 to 19 was 17%, or about 12.5 million kids.
“There’s always room for improvement,” said Tale Fakhouri, who was the leader of the study. She also said the results provide useful information to help with fitness campaigns such as Lets Move, which was initiated (創始) by Michelle Obama in 2010. To inspire kids to eat right and get in shape, Michelle visited schools and held exercise events. She also called on schools to offer regular gym classes.
The study also found kids who get physical education at school may get better grades.
8. What is the result of the new study?
A. It’s important to take physical exams.

11. According to the study, children with enough exercise may ___ .
A. do better in their studies

Put your car keys away and forget about your travel pass—its time to do a bit of walking. National Walking Month is organized every May by Living Streets, an organization that was previously known as the Pedestrians Association. By putting people first, Living Streets wants to create streets and spaces where people feel happier, healthier and more sociable.
The annual campaign gives participants a great opportunity to experience the many virtues (优点) of walking. These include the physical health benefits of becoming fitter, the environmental advantages of not using vehicles, the joy of local discoveries seeing more of your local area on foot, the enjoyment of walking with other people, whether family, friends or work colleagues and finally the stress relief that comes from walking—walking can clear your head.
Walk to School Week, 19 to 24 May, is part of the months activities and its aim is to encourage parents to send children to school on foot, rather than take them in the car or let them use public transport. The movement was started in 1995 with only five participating schools and now two decades later, more than one million children take part.
