Many travelers often ignore small places in Europe, but there are some hidden ones that offer impressive architecture and natural scenery. Here are four places in Europe that are worth a visit.
    Eguisheim, France
If you want to see a perfect French village, go to Eguisheim. It has beautiful half-timbered (露明木架的) houses, stone streets and churches in the Middle Ages. You can also visit a lovely Christmas market in December. Be sure to check out the Chapelle Saint-Léon IX. which has painted ceilings and colorful windows with scenes from Alsace.
    Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland
Lauterbrunnen is a beautiful town with wooden houses and small village churches. But its towering rocks, high mountains, and some of the tallest waterfalls really stand out in Europe. And please don’t forget this fun fact that J. R. R. Tolkien was ever inspired by Lauterbrunnen when he was writing about the Rivendell valley in The Lord of the Rings.
    Český Krumlov, Czech Republic
If you dislike the crowds, enter Český Krumlov, an incredibly pretty town. This charming town in the South Bohemia region has red-roofed houses, attractive fountains in the squares, and a well-known castle where you can have a view of the Vltava River. And you can explore the town in less than half-an-hour walk.
    Guimarāes, Portugal
Afonso Henriques, the country’s first king, was born in Guimarāes. The city center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has great examples of Portuguese architecture with beautiful tiles (瓷砖) from 600 years ago. Even though Guimarāes is a bit bigger than the other places on this list, it still has a charming feel with small shops and open areas.

    A.Tiled buildings. B.High mountains,
    C.Half-timbered houses. D.Red-roofed churches.
    2.What is J. R. R. Tolkien?
    A.An artist. B.An architect.

Technology use seems to be the new wave of addiction hitting people of all ages. Its extreme use can be compared to the use of drugs, which is called Plugin Heroin.
The next time you’re in a crowded public place, look at the people around you. It’s hard to find someone who isn’t glued to the tiny screen, fingers moving at lightning speeds, texting their friends, emailing co-workers or listening to music. It may seem ridiculous that someone is that addicted to such a small object. I’ve seen people who seem to be at their wits’ end (不知所措) if their phone or iPad has been taken away, lost or left at home.
Some people may ask, “What’s wrong with technology use? It’s a way for people to communicate.” While this is true, the overuse of technology isn’t always appropriate in certain settings. Schools are becoming stricter about the use of cell phones, iPads and other electronics in classrooms. Various workplaces have signs hanging on their walls warning employees that “Cell phone use is not permitted” or “Cell phones are forbidden.”
Electronics may be a way for people to communicate and stay in touch with each other, but the disadvantages may outweigh the benefits. People are losing the ability to hold face-to-face conversations with others. However, it’s hard to avoid electronics in this day and age because almost everything is turning into an electronic format. Books, originally meant for paper design, are now being transferred (转存) to electronic forms. Photo albums, and even yearbooks, can now be viewed via the internet. With this growing trend, future generations are bound to become even more addicted to technology.
Is there a cure for electronic addiction? Simply turning electronics off for an hour or two a day may help to an extent, but it will not completely rid electronic addiction. There only seems to be one cure left, and it may be the hardest: self-control.
    4.What is Plug-in Heroin?
    A.The growing popularity of electronics.
B.The serious consequences of technology use
    C.The unreasonable dependence on electronics.
D.The future possibility of technology development.
5.The second paragraph is intended to __________.
A.tell people it is ridiculous to use electronics B.persuade people to quit electronics
C.prove electronics are harmful to people D.show people’s addiction to electronics
6.Why is it difficult to avoid electronics nowadays?
A.Too many things are available in electronic forms
B.The design of paper books is less interesting.
C.It is a must to use electronics to keep in touch.
D.Fewer choices are left for communication.
7.In the author’s opinion, what is the best way to cure electronic addiction?
A.Turn off the electronics for an hour or two.
B.Be stricter about the use of cell phones, iPads and other electronics in classrooms
    C.Learn to control yourself.
D.Cell phones are forbidden in the workplaces.
    C
As part of a U. S. program of 30 gigawatts (十亿瓦特) of offshore wind energy by 2030, seven major offshore wind farms would be developed on the coasts, expected to produce enough electricity to power more than 10 million homes.
As part of a plan to address global warming, they could reduce about 78 million metric tons of planet-warming carbon dioxide emissions, while creating 77, 000 jobs, officials said.
In addition to using offshore wind, the government is working to increase renewable energy production on public lands, with a goal of at least 25 gigawatts of onshore renewable energy from wind and solar power by 2025.
Haaland, director of the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, said officials hope to reduce potential conflicts with fishing groups and other ocean users. Commercial fishing businesses have said planned offshore wind projects off the East Coast would make it difficult to harvest valuable seafood species. Some conservation groups also fear that big turbines (涡轮) will kill thousands of birds.
Heather Zichal, a climate advisor, said the goal for offshore wind was ambitious but achievable. Wind power is an essential part of the goal to reach 100% carbon pollution-free electricity by 2035, she said.
In a related announcement, the Energy Department said it is spending $11.5 million to study risks that offshore wind development may pose to birds, bats and marine mammals, and survey changes in commercial fish and marine populations at an offshore wind site on the East Coast. “In order for Americans living in coastal areas to see the benefits of offshore wind, we must ensure that it’s done with care for the surrounding ecosystem by co-existing with fisheries and marine life — and that’s exactly what this investment will do,” Energy Secretary Jennifer said.
8.What do the first two paragraphs mainly tell us about the program?
A.It will provide power and job chances. B.It can boost land production of power.
C.It will do slight harm to the environment. D.It’s intended to deal with global warming.
9.What’s the fear of some conservation groups?
A.Some valuable ocean species will disappear.
B.Offshore energy production will be banned.
C.The existence of seabirds would be threatened.
D.Fishermen would see a big drop in their income.
10.What did Jennifer say about the program?
A.It has caused potential danger to marine life and birds.
B.Efforts will be made to protect surrounding ocean life.
C.It will contribute direct to the goal of carbon-free ocean.
D.A lot of money has been used in related offshore research.
11.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A.Offshore Energy Is Promoted by Ocean Ecosystem
B.Ocean Wind Helps Cut Carbon Dioxide Emissions
C.America Pioneers to Be Free of Harmful Emissions
D.U. S. Reveals Ocean Wind Farms to Cut Emissions

    D
As aging population gets bigger and dementia(老年痴呆症) more common, more families are struggling with a complex question: How do you support a loved one with dementia, especially when you have a full-time job and several kids?
Reg Urbanowski may have an answer to this pressing issue-robots.
He and his team managed to develop a new type of robots named TP robots. Looking like stand-up vacuum cleaners(真空吸尘器) attached to an iPad, they can be activated remotely via a smartphone and guided remotely by a controller app similar to the way a mouse is used on a desktop computer. All possess audio and visual communication capabilities, allowing the operator to be “in the room” to interact with Mom or Dad.
He believes that caregivers and family members can use a TP robot to “look in” on people with mild dementia. He says, “TP robots provide an effective solution for reducing caregivers’ burden, especially for those who have career or other out-of-home activities.”
Urbanowski and his team have carried out a study that involves providing TP robots for 15 Toronto families. These robots are programmed to provide reminders of necessary daily routine like turning off the gas, taking medicine and having dinner. They will also help ensure patients are getting the exercise they need to maintain their health and well-being.
Erin Crawford, Program Director with the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, says she has faith that TP robots will prove beneficial, particularly when it comes to reminding people with dementia to do certain things at certain times. “It means that family members that can’t be there, for whatever reason, know that those things are still happening, ”she says.
12.What can we infer about TP robots from Paragraph 3?
    A.It’s easy to operate.
    B.It can clean the room.
    C.It’s convenient to carry.
D.It can be used on a computer.
13.How will TP robots help those with dementia?
    A.By having dinner with them.
B.By turning off the gas for them.
    C.By doing activities with them.
D.By reminding them to take pills.
14.What’s Erin Crawford’s attitude to the future of TP robots?
    A.Optimistic.
    B.Pessimistic.
    C.Carefree.
    D.Doubtful.
15.What is the main’ idea of the text?
A.TP robots provide a new cure for dementia.
B.TP robots help to take care of dementia patients.
C.Caregivers of dementia will be replaced by TP robots.
D.Urbanowski and his team are developing a new robot.

“May we, Mother?” asked Meg, turning to Mrs. March, who sat nearby.
“You may try your experiment for a week and see how you like it. I think by Saturday night you will find that all play and no work is as bad as all work and no play.” said Mrs. March.
“Oh, dear, no! It will be wonderful, I’m sure,” said Meg eagerly.
The next morning, Meg did not appear till ten o'clock. The room seemed lonely and unclean as no one had done their duties that morning. Jo spent the morning on the river, and the afternoon reading. Beth spent the morning with her music, pleased that she had no dishes to wash. Amy sat down to draw flowers.
The second day, the third day... they repeated the same life.
Though Mrs. March did her daughters’ duties around the house, keeping home pleasant. It was astonishing what a strange and uncomfortable state the house was in with everyone “resting.” The days kept getting longer and longer, and the girls became upset more easily, quarreling quite a bit more often.
No one would admit that they were tired of the experiment, but by Friday night, they realized that they were glad the week was nearly over. Mrs. March then decided to finish off the experiment in an appropriate manner.
When they got up on Saturday morning, there was no fire in the kitchen, no breakfast in the dining room, and no mother anywhere to be seen.
“What has happened?” cried Jo in shock.
Meg ran upstairs and soon came back. “She says it’s been a hard week for her, so we mustn’t complain, but take care of ourselves.” said Meg.

    Dear Tom,
I’m happy to receive your letter and know that you’re coming to China. I’m writing to sincerely express my warmest welcome. I’d like to tell you something about some places of interest in China. Personally, one of the best is the Great Wall. With a history of over 2,000 years, it runs like a huge dragon across northern China, which now is a world-famous tourist attraction.
If you come to visit the Great Wall, you’d better avoid weekends or holidays when it is too crowded with tourists, so that you can enjoy its beauty more peacefully.
    Yours,
    Li Hua

    47.One possible version
Beth and Amy set the table, while Jo and Meg got breakfast. Fearing to ask advice, Jo and Meg did their best alone, and discovered that cooking, indeed, was a rather difficult task. They boiled the vegetables for too long, and was upset to see they were too soft. The bread burned black, the meat was tough, and rather difficult to cut, and the potatoes were not finished. After the ruined breakfast was finished, they walked out with the dessert proudly, and watched as each one tasted the creation. Unfortunately, none of them are satisfied with breakfast.
“If you learn a bit of cooking, Jo and Meg. That is quite useful” said Mrs. March. She added that the comfort of home depends on each doing her duties. The girl finally understood that when mother did their work, they did quite well, though they didn’t think they were very happy. “Don’t you feel that it is more pleasant to help one another to make home comfortable and lovely to us all?” “We do, Mother, we do!” cried the girls. “Then, you must take up your duties again tomorrow. I know they sometimes seem difficult, but they become easier with time.”
