I arrived hme frm wrk, my mind racing. I was scheduled t perfrm an experiment using a pricey piece f equipment, but I had spent the whle day wrrying abut the experiment which was n the tp f my agenda, and I amazingly lnged t shut ff my anxius thughts. S after dinner, I made a cup f ht chclate, stretched myself n my sfa, and pened a page. Almst instantly, my mind left behind the details f experimental design and stepped int a land f mnsters, magic dust, and man-like bears cmprising a wnderful wrld distinct frm my daily life. It was exactly what I needed.
Grwing up, I was virtually never a big fan f nvels. My classmates wuld be crazy abut the latest Harry Ptter bk, while my cpy sat cllecting dust n a shelf. Instead, I wuld chse t read thrugh the reference bks related t my disciplines fr better grades. After I started graduate schl, extracurricular reading didn’t appeal t me at all but I spent mst f my time n campus digesting research papers and textbks and my mind culdn’t handle prcessing fact-filled nnfictin bks at hme, t. S I knew that I needed t find a way t enjy reading again.
T help me stick with it, I made a New Year’s reslutin: I wuld read tw fictin bks per mnth fr the entire year. The result was an almst instant appreciatin f fictin, alng with many unexpected results including nes that have benefited my schlwrk.
What surprised me the mst was hw much I learned. Sme f the best bks I read were histrical fictinal stries happening in a realistic histrical setting. I learned abut life in different cuntries, as well as struggles peple there faced during difficult perids in their histries. The bks have helped me build sympathy and understanding, with an unexpected benefit: I’ve started t think mre deeply abut the diversity f issues in the scientific cmmunity and culd serve it, heart and sul.
What did the authr d t wipe ut the anxiety?
    A. He drwned it in chclate.B. He cnducted an experiment.
    C. He slept n the sfa leisurely.D. He escaped int a fantasy wrld.
What des the authr mean by the underlined part in paragraph 2? A Reading nvels was a waste f time.
Reading a gd bk was time well spent.
He was t busy t take gd care f his bks.
The Harry Ptter bk wasn’t as gd as expected.
Hw did the New Year ’s reslutin benefit the authr?
Mre sympathy went ut t him.
    His mral values were strengthened.
He learned much abut religius diversity.
He gained new insight int his academic discipline.

Carls Slim’s prpsal that we wrk a three-day week sunds crazy. But many, in 1922, thught Henry Frd crazy when he annunced that his staff wuld wrk a five-day week.
Our wrking week seems nrmal t us because it is what we all always d. He certainly culd be fr thse he was mst cncerned abut when he made his three-day-week statement at a business cnference in Paraguay: the wrkers wh are nt ready t retire. As Mr. Slim said, it n lnger makes sense fr peple t stp wrking in their fifties r sixties when they may still have up t a third f their lives ahead f them. “Peple are ging t have t wrk fr mre years, until they are 70 r 75, and just wrk three days a week—perhaps 11 hurs a day.” he said.
Keeping lder emplyees at wrk makes sense fr scieties, especially thse with a diminishing number f
yung peple wh are expected t supprt lng - living retirees.
He appeared t be suggesting that these shrt-week wrkers earn the same as they did full-time. That is what happens at Telmex, his Mexican fixed-line phne cmpany, where thse qualified fr retirement can chse t wrk fur-day weeks n full pay.
Older wrkers elsewhere might prefer shrter weeks n reduced pay, and eight r nine-hur days rather than
    11. Their cmpanies might value keeping their experience while saving mney n their salaries. What abut everyne else? There are thse wh are unemplyed, r in unstable jbs, wh wuld be delighted t have three secure, well-paid days f wrk a week.
Shrter weeks dn’t wrk in every jb, but they wrk in mre jbs than mst traditin-bund managers think. Agreeing t them requires tw shifts in management thinking. The first is the realizatin that much f the time spent in ffices is wasted anyway. Secnd, senir executives need t understand that the best way t measure peple is by the wrk they prduce—nt by hw much time they spend at their desks.
Peple living lnger, in better health, are changing wrking life t. Mr. Slim’s idea is in tune with the times.
Accrding t paragraph 2, why did Mr. Slim think it unwise fr peple in their fifties r sixties t retire?
Because they have lnger life t live in their future.
Because they have children and ld parents t supprt
Because they have much interest in their present wrk.
Because they have mre experience than yung wrkers.
What can we infer frm the passage?
The decisin f wrking five days a week by Frd was cnsidered nrmal in the past.
Old peple cntinuing wrking can reduce yung peple’s pressure t supprt their ld parents
Sme cmpanies dn’t want their ld wrkers t g n wrking because they can save mney.
Much time spent at wrk is wasted if managers dn’t agree t reduce ld emplyees’ wrking time.
What des the underlined phrase “in tune with” mean in the last paragraph?
    A. Different frm.B. Superir t.
    C. Far frm.D. Cnsistent with.
What is the best title fr this passage?
Retire Or Nt, This Is A Questin!

Dreams, accrding t Carl Jung, reveal a certain amunt f reality hidden during waking cnsciusness. In Jungian philsphy, the cnflict and chas experienced in dreams finally bring rder t ur lives. While Jung’s mystical theries are debatable, he was nt mistaken abut the imprtance f dreaming. A grwing number f reprts shw that a cntinuus lack f dreaming is damaging ur waking hurs in many ways.
This trend is causing damage t ur immune and metablic (新陈代谢的) systems, let alne the electrnic prducts that keep us up late at night are ruining ur sleep patterns, which has lng-term cnsequences n ur memry system. One study shwed that nt allwing mice t have adequate amunts f REM (Rapid Eye Mvement) sleep, the stage in which we dream, the mice culdn’t strengthen memries.
Yu might think this is just a sleep prblem, but dreaming is inseparable frm ur nighttime rest. We sleep in cycles (周期), each lasting abut 90 minutes; in a sleep cycle, we g thrugh nn-REM sleep befre hitting REM. As the night prgresses, REM sleep perids increase in length while deep sleep (ne f the stages f nn-REM sleep) decreases. The lnger we sleep, the mre time we spend in REM, which is why we are ften dreaming when waking up in the mrning. If we sleep less than seven hurs, hwever, it becmes harder t achieve this level f REM.
The cmbinatin f sleeping and dreaming acts as an emtinal stabilizer. We recver frm emtinal hurt faster when we sleep and dream prperly. Hwever, we’re nt getting enugh sleep t cycle thrugh the stages t take advantage f this natural circadian (昼夜节奏的) anti-depressant (抗抑郁剂)—dreams. Instead, we get depressed and turn t alchl r medicines t get t sleep, which nly makes things wrse because even ne drink leads t late REM while anti-depressants prmte deep sleep at the expense f REM.
We’re paying fr this lack f dreaming in many ways. Fr example, a 2021 study stated that cmpared with quiet rest and nn-REM sleep, REM prmted the frmatin f assciative netwrks and the integratin f unassciated infrmatin. Vlunteers that experienced mre REM sleep were better equipped fr slving prblems requiring creative slutins.
Rwan Hper, the managing editr at New Scientist, writes that dreams that include an “emtinal cre” appear t be a main functin f REM sleep and that we shuld lk at sleep patterns as seriusly as we d diet and exercise habits.
What’s Carl Jung’s view abut dreams?
    A. They cause chas.B. They damage immunity.
    C. They reveal secrets.D. They mirrr reality.
Why is the sleep prcess explained in paragraph 3?
T shw a dream mainly ccurs during REM sleep.
T prve the minimum sleep time shuld be seven hurs.
T prve dream prblems and sleep prblems are attached.
T shw peple ften dream when waking up in the mrning.
What cnclusin can be inferred frm paragraph 5?
    Dreaming prmtes creativity.
    Dreaming helps fight depressin.
The brain still receives new infrmatin during REM sleep.
The brain is paying the price fr having mre nn-REM sleep.
What’s the main idea f the passage?
The imprtance f sleep lies in dreams.
The absence f dreams is terrible fr us.
Dreaming patterns are mre imprtant than we realize.
Dreaming has mystical pwer f strengthening memries.
