When it's summertime, swimming becomes popular. Take a deep breath while you're underwater.
How long can you hold it?Perhaps 30 or 40 seconds? The Bajau(巴瑶族)people can hold their breath for several minutes at a time. What is their secret?
Scientists from the University of Copenhagen and the University of Califormia, Berkeley, have found that it is probably because they have bigger spleens(脾脏).
The Bajau people live in the waters of Malaysia and Indonesia. They are famous for their amazing free diving abilities. They can dive over 70 meters underwater for several minutes while collecting shellfish, according to the BBC.
When we dive, several things happen inside our body. One important thing is that the spleen contracts(收缩). The spleen stores red blood cells which carry oxygen(氧气). When it contracts, it squeezes out the oxygen and sends it to important organs(器官). This is like giving the body an "oxygen boost", which allows you to hold your breath for longer.
Scientists found that the Bajau have spleens that are about 50 percent larger than those of other people. But this is not the result of training underwater over time. Scientists believe that gemnes(基因)might have influenced the size of their spleens. Of course, most of us don't have big spleens. But we cam still enjoy free diving with the help of professional training. The key is self-control. You need to let go of amything that makes you feel good or bad, free diving instructor Emtna Farrell told the BC.
Diving is fum, but it can also be dangerous sometimes. One should not try it without profssional(专业)training.
