Florence was a 17-year-old senior student in high school, who was busy composing (创作) a song. Together with three other music lovers she met at the 2016 Campus Singing Competition, she plans to publish an album (音乐专辑) . Edward, who was 18, is another one of the four students to make their own album. Actually it was he who came up with this fun idea in the first place.

“Everyone loves music. As a good way to express our feelings and emotions, music can tell something about who we are and our experience of the world. We hope we can use our music to touch our peers (同龄人),” Edward said.

The album includes 15 songs on three themes-love, campus life and youth, with pop and electronic music styles. The inspiration for the songs came from the students’ lives. Take the song Sea of Tranquility for example—it was written by Edward during a flight back to Chengdu after he took part in the China High School Biology Olympiad in summer. “The sky is clear and the ground looks small from the plane. This scene makes me feel calm and peaceful,” Edward explained.

The songs were created one by one with the efforts of the four writers. But a challenge soon appeared. The students found that they didn’t have enough money to produce the album. So to cut down their costs, they used an iPad and headphones to record the songs in an empty classroom on the weekend.

Apart from reducing their costs, they also tried to raise money through crowdfunding on the Internet. They raised more than 7,000 dollars before the album was published in October. “Thanks to all the supporters, we’ll keep working on our own music,” Edward said.

The Chinese paddlefish(白鲟)—one of the world's largest freshwater fish—has been announced extinct. Scientists say the paddlefish, also called the Chinese swordfish, is believed to have a lineage dating back at least 34 million years. With its long nose and mouth, the paddlefish could grow as long as seven meters.

But a research paper recently published in Science of the Total. Environment reported the paddlefish was now extinct. The researchers include scientists from the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences, Britain's University of Kent and the University of South Bohemia in the Czech Republic.

The paper says the paddlefish was announced extinct for two reasons. It said that the fish was not able to survive because of widespread overfishing and damage to its native environment in the Yangtze River.

Researchers discovered 332 different species of fish in the Yangtze River in 2017 and 2018. But they did not find a single Chinese paddlefish. They guessed the fish disappeared between 2005 and 2010. The extinction of the Chinese paddlefish was “a huge loss” to nature.

Pan Wenjing is a forest and ocean expert with Greenpeace East Asia. “The ecology of the Yangtze River is almost in ruins due to human activity in past decades” Pan said. She stressed that China had taken measures to improve the Yangtze's environment, including a 10-year ban(禁令)on fishing.

After the extinction was reported in the news, some Chinese media and Internet users took a look back at the large creatures. Many people appeared to have not heard of the Chinese paddlefish before it was announced extinct.

“Every time I see the news of another species going extinct, my heart starts to ache,” wrote one Weibo user. “Humans should not live alone on this planet,” the user added.

32What do we know from Paragraph 3?

AFishing in the Yangtze River. BEnvironment in the Yangtze River.

CResearchers of the Chinese paddlefish. DThe reasons for the Chinese paddlefish's extinction.

33Which of the following best describes the present situation of the Yangtze River?

ANo pain, no gain. BTo protect animals is to protect humans.

One day, when I was 7 years old, my father was standing in line to buy tickets for the circus for me.

And there was only one family in front of us. I was deeply impressed by them. There were eight children, all probably under the age of twelve. You could tell they didn’t have a lot of money.

Their clothes were not expensive, but they were clean. The children were well-behaved, all of them standing in line, two-by-two behind their parents, holding hands. They were excitedly talking about the clowns, elephants, and other acts they would see that night with their brothers or sisters in a low voice.

I could sense that they had never been to the circus before. It promised to be highlight of their young lives. The father and mother were at the head of the pack, standing proud as could be. The mother was holding her husband’s hand, looking up at him as if to say, “You are my hero.”

He was smiling and responding in pride, looking back at her as if to say, “You got that right.”

The ticket lady asked the father how many tickets he wanted. He proudly responded, “Please let me buy eight children’s tickets and two adult tickets so I can take my family to the circus.”

The ticket lady gave the price. The man’s wife let go of his hand, her head dropped, and his lips began to shake. The father leaned a little closer and asked, “How much did you say?”

The ticket lady again quoted the price. The man didn’t have enough money.

How was he supposed to turn and tell his eight children that he didn’t have enough money to take them to the circus?

Actually, we were not wealthy in any sense. So, I understand how the kids would feel. I felt sorry for them.

    注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;

    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Seeing what was going on, my dad put his hand in his pocket, pulled out a $20 bill and dropped it on the ground._________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
