Glen Coe
If you asked me where my favourite place to visit in all of Scotland is... I would say, Glen Coe. The whole area of Glen Coe constantly had my face in shock due to the beauty that I was witnessing (亲眼看见). It’s just a stream of dramatic mountains, lakes, rugged (崎岖的) beauty and more.
Fort William
Fort William is probably one of the most well-known places to visit in Scotland. It’s a popular tourist destination thanks to being home to the UK’s tallest mountain: Ben Nevis. Fort William is also the starting point for one of the world’s most famous train rides: The Jacobite. Harry Potter fans will recognize it as the Hogwarts Express, and this train ride will take you through the beautiful countryside, crossing some iconic Harry Potter filming locations such as the Dumbledore’s Grave and the Glenfinnan Viaduct!
Isle Of Skye
This island feels totally different from other parts of Scotland and is truly rugged and ready! There are many hot spots to explore including the Old Man of Storr, the Fairy Glen. I even stayed on a private island with its very own lighthouse, which was one of the coolest places I’ve ever visited and one of the most romantic places stay in Scotland.
Cairngorms National Park
This is the largest national park in the UK so it’s another popular place to visit in Scotland and it’s no surprise why. It’s absolutely beautiful and there’s so much happening at the Cairngorms National Park! In October, I told the eight-year-olds in the class I teach in Pompton Lakes, New Jersey, about my plan. “Since all of you have done extra jobs around the house to earn some money,” I said, “then we’ll buy food for a Thanksgiving dinner for someone who might not have a nice dinner otherwise.”
I watched them while they walked up and down the supermarket. “Flowers!” Kristine cried. The group rushed towards the holiday plants.
“You can’t eat flowers.”—It was wiser to use any extra money to buy something that could be turned into meals.
“But Mrs Sherlock,” came the begging voice, “we want flowers.”
Defeated finally, I put a pot of “funny” purple mums in the cart full of foods. “She’ll like this one,” the children agreed.
An organisation had given us the name and address of a needy grandmother who had lived alone for many years. We finally pulled up in front of a small house. A slightly-built woman with a weary face came to the door to welcome us.
My little group ran to get the foods. As each box was carried in, the old woman kept on saying “Thanks.” —much to her visitors’ pleasure. When Amy put the mums on the counter, the woman seemed surprised. She’s wishing it was a bag of rice, I thought.
We returned to the car. As we fastened our seat belts, we could see the kitchen window. The woman inside waved goodbye, then turned and walked across the room, past the turkey, past the goods, straight to the mums. She put her face in them. When she raised her head, there was a smile on her lips. She was transformed (转变) before our eyes.
The children were quiet. At that moment, they had seen for themselves the power they have to make another’s life better. The children had sensed that sometimes a person needs a pot of funny purple flowers on a dark November day.
24. What does the story mainly tell us?
A. Everyone has the power to change the world.
B. Acts of kindness can change someone’s life.
C. The poor people may need flowers as well.
D. Children have different thoughts from adults.
25. What does the underlined word “mums” refer to in the passage?
A. Mothers. B. Teachers. C. Flowers. D. Gifts.
26. Why did the author consider the mums "funny"?
A. Because she thought they were too ugly.
B. Because she thought they were for children.
C. Because she thought they were too expensive.
D. Because she thought they couldn’t help people in need.
27. What can we know from the passage?
A. The old woman preferred food to flowers.
B. Flowers are more important than food to the poor.
C. The old woman’s dark day was brightened by the children.
D. All the money the children earned was transformed to food.

“Surprise!” was the first thing I heard when I opened the door. My family and friends were all smiling at me. There were colorful balloons all over the house, a big poster saying “HAPPY BIRTHDAY”, and of course a cake with 12 candles. It was a wonderful feeling. I knew that I had finally turned twelve and I might possibly get the thing I wanted most.
I saw my mom and dad coming towards me with a small box which seemed to be a birthday present. When I opened the box, I couldn’t believe my eyes. I had really gotten a mobile phone! Throwing myself into their arms, I let out a cry of joy, “Thank you! I love you guys!”
“You’re welcome. We knew this was going to make you happy but we didn’t only get you this because you turned twelve, but also because you are doing well in school. We expect you to keep getting good grades.”
“Of course I will,” I said.
As soon as I got to school the next morning, I was showing off my phone and asking everyone for their number. It was cool how I got so many contacts on the first day.
It felt like I didn’t even exist in that class anymore. I wouldn’t pay much attention to the teachers because I was too busy on my phone. However, I didn’t get caught using it.
I am pretty sure that the teacher did notice that I stopped paying attention to her because a week later we took a test and I failed. What was worse, my mom had to sign the test.
It was hard to show my mom the test. She was used to seeing A’s and B’s on my tests. Finally, I showed it to her, and she couldn’t believe it. She was angry but most of all, she was disappointed.

第一节
One possible version:
Dear classmates,
I’m glad to have a chance to share my English learning experience with you.
Firstly, I always preview before a new English lesson. Secondly, I focus on what I’m learning in class and stick to going over the lessons, which can help me remember what I have learnt well. Finally, I suggest that you read more English books and watch more programs to increase vocabulary. What’s more, to improve my oral English, I form a good habit of reading English aloud every morning. Besides, I always imitate tapes and our teachers’ pronunciation, which can surely correct my pronunciation. In a word, I try to speak English as much as possible. Only by communicating can we master English well. It is these English learning habits that make me study English well. I hope what I say can help you.
Thank you!
第二节
One possible version:
Realizing the reason for my failure, my parents started to dislike the fact that I had a phone. They said they had noticed that I never paid attention to them. It was like I had my own little world. So they thought we didn’t communicate as much as I did with my phone. They regretted having given me a phone.
Then I started to wonder if I was wrong. A week later I tried going a whole day without a phone and it didn’t go that badly. I had so much fun because I was actually spending time with my family and paying attention to them. From that day, I had a different opinion towards phones. Phones really take you away from the rest of the world. I’m not saying that phones are bad and not to use them, but you do have to spare some time to spend with your family and not get stuck with your phone all day.

M: Oh, I design for our company in the same building. I’ve seen you walk by several times. Stop to have a cup of coffee sometime.
W: OK. Thanks.
(Text 8)
M: Good morning. How can I help you?
W: I’d like to exchange some money. What’s the rate for today?
M: What currency do you have?
W: US dollars.
M: Well, let me check. The rate was 644 yesterday. But now it is 645 to buy and 649 to sell. How much would you like to exchange?
W: I’d like to exchange 180 dollars for RMB.
M: Sure, Madam. And our bank has a special offer today. We will not charge 2% service fee for the exchange over 250 dollars.
W: In that case, I will exchange 250 dollars then. Here is 70 more dollars.
M: Thank you, Madam. The total is 1,612. 5 yuan. How do you like to have your money, in hundreds or in fifties?
W: In hundreds, please, and some small change for the rest.
M: Sure. Here you are, Madam.

W: What are you busy with, Jeremy?
M: Oh, I’m just looking for a part-time job. With school fees going up this year, I need all the help I can get! I’ve sent my resume to restaurants, hotels and supermarkets, but I haven’t heard back from any of them.
W: That’s strange. You’ve had a service job before, and you’re a good student. Maybe your cover letters are too long.
M: Cover letters? What are those?
W: A cover letter is something that introduces you to a possible employer. It’s meant to explain why you’d be a good fit for the job.
M: So, employers look at that before they look at my resume?
W: Yes. If they don’t like your cover letter, they often won’t even read your resume!
M: Oh, I’m so glad you told me about this!
W: My pleasure. It’s hard nowadays. With so many people applying for so few jobs, you need to do all you can to stand out, especially online.

M: Hey, folks! Thank you so much for joining us here. I’m your host Jimmy Fallon. First of all, I have some news to tell you. As you may have heard before, Jay Leno will not be the host of Tonight Show soon, and the people at NBC have decided to let me host it! This is such an amazing honor for me, and I promise that I won’t let you down, America! And now folks, we have a great show for you tonight. Former President Bill Clinton is our first special guest, and he promised to play some jazz for us. And we also have Brian Cranston from the hit TV show Breaking Bad with us. I have to admit that I’m a fan of the show, and of him personally, so please don’t complain if I act like a teenage girl around him! Finally, we have a very funny woman on the show, much funnier than me... Wanda Sykes is going to stop by! And now, ladies and gentlemen, please give a warm welcome to the best guests.
