It wasn’t until I graduated frm cllege that I subsequently realized that knwledge is s endless that I was able t learn fr pleasure. A sense f curisity, rather than perfectinism, guided me. I started t see dictinaries as field guides t the life f language. Lking up wrds encuntered in the wild felt less like a failure and mre like an admissin that I still didn’t knw lts f things and an pprtunity t discver mre.
I c herish my 1954 cpy f Webster’s New Internatinal Dictinary given by my rmmate. I ften cnsult it during the evening games f Scrabble r midday magazine reading. I mstly read nvels at night, in bed, s when I cme acrss unfamiliar wrds, I fld the bttm f the page and then lk them up wrd by wrd. When I start encuntering
these wrds, the language wrld seems t shrink t the size f a small twn.
Wikipedia answers questins with mre questins, pening up pages f infrmatin yu never asked fr. But a dictinary builds n cmmn knwledge, using simple wrds t explain mre cmplex nes. Using ne feels as if I’m pening an yster ( 牡蛎)with
curisity. Unknwn wrds becme mysteries, and slving them gives me satisfactin. Why
always leave them up t guesswrk? Why nt cnsult a dictinary and feel the instant cntentment f pairing cntext with a definitin?
Dictinaries reward yu fr paying attentin, bth t the things yu cnsume and t yur wn curisity. They are an entrance int the kind f childish urge t just knw things, which I had befre learning became a duty instead f a game.
Fr mst f yu, dictinaries are a gateway int that kind f uncnsidered knwledge- seeking. They remind yu that, when it cmes t learning, allwing yur curisity is just as imprtant as paying attentin. After all, isn’t curisity really just anther frm f attentin? Fllwing yur curisity instead f pushing it away, cnsult yur dictinary and feel cnnected t mre than what’s right in frnt f yu.
What des cnsulting dictinaries mean t the authr?
A guide t shape his character.
    A cmplete admissin f failure.
A chance t explre the unknwn.
A unique way f perfecting himself.
What des “cherish” underlined in paragraph 2 mean?
    A. Lse.B. Prize.C. Edit.D. Publish.
Why is Wikipedia mentined in paragraph 3?
    T shw advantages f dictinaries.
T indicate the imprtance f technlgy.
T intrduce anther pwerful learning tl.
T prve the benefits f using the search engine.
What des the authr try t d in the last paragraph?
    A. Make an appeal.B. Raise dubts.
    C. Give a warning.D. Express thanks.

On June 22, 1927, Charles Lindbergh flew int Daytn, Ohi f the US, fr dinner at Orville Wright’s huse. It had been just a mnth since the yung aviatr ( 飞 行 家 ) cmpleted the first ever sl nnstp crssing f the Atlantic, and he felt he ught t pay
his respects t the celebrated pineer f flight.
Frty-tw years later, n July 16, 1969, Apll 11 astrnaut Neil Armstrng was allwed t bring a persnal guest t the Kennedy Space Center t witness the launch f NASA’s twering Saturn V rcket. Armstrng invited his her, Charles Lindbergh.
One man, Lindbergh, culd be the living link between the pilt f the first pwered flight and the cmmander f the first missin t anther wrld.
In ur century, fr better r wrse, prgress isn’t what it used t be. Nrthwestern University ecnmist Rbert Grdn argues that by 1970, all the key technlgies f
mdern life were in place: electricity, mechanized agriculture, highways, air travel, telecmmunicatins, and the like. After that, innvatin and ecnmic grwth simply culdn’t keep ging at the breakneck pace set ver the previus 100 years—a perid Grdn calls “the special century.”
Since 1970 the nly ntable creatin has been the ever-grwing increase in cmputing pwer in the frm f the Internet and ur mbile devices. But in mst ther ways, Grdn argues, the lives f peple in develped natins lk and feel the same in 2019 as they did in 1979 r 1989.
Cnsider cnsumer rbtics. There’s enrmus ptential fr rbts t help us with husewrk, educatin, entertainment and medical care. But hme rbtics cmpanies seem t keep flding. S far, the nly cmmercially successful hme rbt, the Rmba vacuum cleaner, hit the market in 2002.
Or cnsider access t space. In 2007 the XPRIZE Fundatin ffered $30 millin in prizes t cmmercial teams that wuld cmpete t land a rbtic rver n the mn by 2018. Althugh five teams had built rvers, all had truble raising enugh mney t buy launch cntracts.
Meanwhile the list f ptentially wrld-changing technlgies that get lts f press ink but remain stubbrnly in the prttype ( 雏 形 ) phase is very lng. Self-driving cars, flying cars, gene therapy, nuclear fusin. Need I cntinue?
Granted, these are all hard prblems. But histrically, slving the really big prblems— rural electrificatin, fr example—has required sustained, large-scale investments, ften with private markets and taxpayers splitting the burden. In this century, we urgently need t und sme f the cnsequences f the last great bm by develping affrdable zer- and negative-emissins technlgies. That’s anther hard prblem—and t slve it, we’ll need t recapture sme f what made the “special century” s special.
In the beginning f the passage, the authr used the stry Charles Lindberg t .
explain technlgy advanced fast in the past 100 years
infer mst aviatrs are likely t knw each ther well
prve this man was a key histric figure f the past century
pint ut we shuld be grateful t such a pineering inventr
Why des Rbert Grdn call the past 100 years “the special century”?
Cmputing pwer keeps grwing at a high speed.
New things keep cming up t make life easier.
Human life has becme highly mechanized.
Peple have been trained t be mre creative.
What can be inferred frm the example f access t space in paragraph 7?
Big innvatins can’t be achieved withut cnstant financial supprt.
Technlgical develpment can’t be gained if it is nt applied practically.
Scientific prjects are nt cnsidered valuable unless cmmercially successful.
New creatins are nt wrth making unless significantly imprving peple’s lives.
Which f the fllwing best summarizes the passage?
Sustained and large-scale investments are harder t get nw than befre.
Peple are facing a time with mre difficult prblems than it used t be.
Majr technlgical shifts are fewer and farther between than they were.
Slutins t the really big prblems are fewer than we culd expect.

A new study reveals new clues abut the subtle( 微 妙 的 ) but previusly prly understd evlutinary dance happening between temperatures and changes in the size f
animal bdy parts. The new research ffers imprtant insights abut hw birds may adapt t the rapid rise in temperatures driven by glbal climate change.
Fr the study in Nature Cmmunicatins, the researchers lked at nearly 7, 000 species f terrestrial nn migratry birds—which is nearly tw-thirds f all bird species— and fcused n hw bird species has evlved in ambient temperature(温度的梯度) and
    ther factrs f selectin.
Tw widely accepted “rules” in bilgy indicate that as lcal temperatures change, animals are likely t adjust heat transfer capabilities by changing the size f their bdies and extremities(四肢).
Bilgist Carl Bergmann’s rule states that clder climates spawn bigger bdies
because they help keep heat while smaller bdies help shed it. As a result, a plar bear is mre than 2 1/2 times as tall at the shulder as a sun bear frm equatrial regins.
Zlgist Jel Asaph Allen’s rule deals with extremities, such as limbs, ears, and beaks, stating that animals in clder climates tend t have smaller extremities because extremities tend t have mre surface than vlume and are uniquely suited t shed heat. Fr example, arctic hares have evlved shrt legs and ears, whereas desert jackrabbits have evlved very lnglegs and ears.
“The prblem is that everything we knw abut eclgy tells us that changing the size f bdies and extremities can be prblematic,” says lead authr Carls Bter, an assciate prfessr f integrative bilgy at the University f Texas at Austin.
Fr example, if bdy size decreases, birds may nt be able t hunt the same fd as their ancestrs. Similarly, if the average size r shape f a bill changes, birds may becme less efficient fragers(觅食者) r have truble prducing typical mating calls.
It is nt surprising that many prir studies have failed t find evidence fr these
predictins and that these s-called bilgical rules are currently cntrversial. The new study culd clarify that debate by shwing that althugh the patterns that Bergmann and Allen predicted ccur in the wild, the tw separate mechanisms cmplement each ther.
What is the new study abut?
The tw rules prpsed by previus researchers.
The differences between animals in cld and warm areas.
The effect glbal climate change has n animals’ fraging.
The way birds evlve in respnse t the rising temperature.
What des the underlined wrd “spawn” in paragraph 4 prbably mean?
    A. make frB. bring inC. arise frmD. wipeut
Accrding t the passage, the birds in the clder areas tend t have .
    A. bigger bdies and lnger legs.B. bigger bdies and shrter legs.
    C. smaller bdies and lnger legs.D. smaller bdies and shrter legs.
What can we learn frm the passage?
The tw rules with separate mechanisms are cntradictry.
The new study cmbines the prir studies and the tw rules.
The new study prvides supprting evidence fr the tw rules.
The tw rules shw animals change the bdy size t keep heat
    第二节(共 5 个小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分)

Artificial Intelligence Develps an Ear fr Birdsng
We can learn a lt frm nature if we listen t it mre — and scientists arund the wrld are trying t d just that. Frm muntain peaks t cean depths, bilgists are planting audi recrders t eavesdrp (窃听) n the whistles and sngs f whales, elephants, bats
and especially birds. This summer, fr example, ver 2,000 electrnic ears will recrd the
sund scape f Califrnia’s Sierra Nevada muntain range. 36
“Audi data is a real treasure because it cntains vast amunts f infrmatin,” says eclgist Cnnr Wd, a Crnell University pstdctral researcher, wh is leading the Sierra Nevada prject. “We just need t think creatively abut hw t share and access that infrmatin.” 37 Frtunately the latest generatin f machine-learning AI systems can prcess thusands f hurs f data in less than a day.
Stefan Kahl, a machine-learning expert at Crnell’s Center fr Cnservatin Biacustics and Chemnitz University f Technlgy in Germany, built BirdNET, ne f the mst ppular avian-sund-recgnitin systems used tday. Wd’s team will rely n BirdNET t analyze the Sierra Nevada recrdings. 38 The neural netwrk then teaches itself which features can be used t assciate an input (in this case, a bird’s call) with a label (the bird’s identity).
39 Althugh they analyze audi much mre quickly than humans, they still lag behind in filtering ut verlapping sunds t hme in n a signal f interest. Sme researchers see this as the next prblem fr AI t tackle. Even the current imperfect versins, hwever, enable sweeping prjects that wuld be far t time-cnsuming fr humans t tackle alne. “ 40 .” Wd says.
A.A wealth f such data already exists fr cmmn birds. B.They altgether will generate nearly a millin hurs f audi.
These machine-learning AI systems still have rm fr imprvement.
Such recrdings can create valuable snapshts (简介) f animal cmmunities.
This is a tricky prblem because it takes humans a lng time t decde recrdings.
Such systems start by analyzing hundreds f recrded bird calls, each “labeled” with its crrespnding species.
Tls like BirdNET allw us t dream big.

The tw kids were whispering. Their dad, Jasn, culd hear them, but they didn’t knw that Jasn listened intently.

Jasn silently pened his bedrm dr. His wife was asleep, and he decided nt t wake her up. He watched as the tw slinked ( 溜 ) dwn the stairs. He fllwed, unseen, unheard. The kids went t the living rm. He watched as his sn, Tdd, put a blanket n

“I’ll be right back,” whispered Tdd. Jasn held still as Tdd went t the kitchen. He quietly watched as Tdd carefully made tw peanut butter and jelly-sandwiches. And he watched as Tdd went back t the living rm and sweetly handed his sister a sandwich. Ashley gave Tdd a smile. Jasn wndered what shw the kids wuld watch n televisin s late at night. He watched, unable and nt wanting t lk away, Tdd read in a vice just abve a whisper while Ashley sat and listened and very quietly chewed. Her head rested n her brther’s shulder, and she lked s peaceful. Culd these really be the same children wh had been fighting nly a few hurs earlier?
