There has been a recent utpuring f calls t make sprts safer, but they seem t be getting luder with t little actin being taken. The mst recent develpment cmes frm the gymnastics wrld where 70 frmer gymnasts penned a letter t Sprt Canada calling fr prperly prtecting yung athletes.
As a sprts schlar, I find myself in an interesting psitin. My early persnal experience as a
gymnast was exceptinal—I grew up cmpeting at an elite ( 精 英 ) level, leading t university invlvement. I had strng, caring caches wh always put my health and safety first. But when I was
cmpeting, I wuld ften see fellw cmpetitrs ver trained and living in fear.
During my 14 years as a gymnastics cach and judge, I witnessed many disturbing things abut
the sprt. I was ften trn between my rle as a judge, and my feeling f mral respnsibility t supprt the well-being f yung athletes in the sprt. I felt invlved in the txic ( 有 毒 的 ) sprts culture and started t try and push fr change. Despite the emergence f safe sprts guidelines, the txic culture remained.
What I nw realize is that the institutinal structures in sprts, particularly in gymnastics, where yung girls are the stars, silence different vices. Obedience, tlerance and cmpliance (服从) are what are expected in this culture—which is why it has taken s lng fr these issues t cme t light. As a sprts schlar, I am nw in a psitin f pwer and have the privilege and pprtunity t
supprt change. Mving twards a mre athlete-centered apprach t sprts is ne step in the right directin. But ur funding mdels are fundamentally abut medals and verall success, nt abut hw well a sprt perfrms in getting peple mving r hw culturally safe the sprt actually is.
Safe sprts plicies and respnsibility are a start, but they are far frm a much-needed cultural shift.
What can we learn abut the authr when she was an athlete?
She was afraid f her strict caches.
She perfrmed well in gymnastics.
She was ften asked t d extra training.
She knew nthing abut the sprts culture.
What is the cultural prblem existing in the gymnastics field?
The fcus n medals and verall success.
The institutinal structures f gymnastics.
Over training and silencing the yung athletes.
The gap between safe sprts and silenced athletes.
Why is it hard fr the txic culture in gymnastics t be knwn t the public?
Caches fllwed the safe sprts plicies.
Authrities adjusted their guidelines in time.
Yung athletes are taught t be bedient and tlerant.
The public shw little interest in the health f athletes.
What is the best title fr the text?
An Appeal fr a Cultural Shift in Sprts
The Ways f Training Athletes Safely
An Athlete-Turned Schlar’s Life Experiences
Sme Advice n Hw t Make Sprts Ppular

If yu’re a fan f hummingbirds, then yu prbably knw that at night they lwer their bdy temperatures greatly by drpping int an energy-saving state f inactivity called trpr. A new study finds that the birds have mre than ne level f trpr. “There have been a few signs that this ability t fine-tune thermregulatin (温度调节) is pssible,” said the lead authr Anusha Shankar.
Shankar and her clleagues used a special methd t track the bdy temperatures f three
hummingbird species in Arizna: the blue-thrated muntain gem, Rivli’s hummingbird, and the black-chinned hummingbird. They measured the temperatures emitted frm the skin arund the eyes f the birds and fund that differences in heat generatin at varius stages are nticeable.
The nrmal daytime bdy temperature f a hummingbird is mre than 100°F, even in cld weather. During shallw trpr, their bdy temperature drps by abut 20°F. In deep trpr, the bird keeps a bdy temperature 50°F belw its nrmal daytime temperature. If human bdy temperature were t drp mere 3 degrees frm the standard 98.6°F, we’d be in a state f hypthermia (a medical cnditin f having an abnrmally lw bdy temperature) and, unlike hummingbirds, we wuld need utside help t get warm again.
“In this study, we fund that the smallest bird used deep trpr every night,” said Shankar. “The bigger birds smetimes use deep trpr and smetimes shallw trpr, and smetimes n trpr at all.”
Shallw trpr may have develped t balance energy saving with the cst f deep trpr. In deep trpr, a hummingbird is much mre likely t be affected by disease because its immune system ( 免疫 系 统 ) shuts dwn. And what’s mre, it wuld get inadequate sleep and be easily harmed by its enemies.
Trpr is nt the same as sleep. Sleep uses much mre energy and serves many imprtant functins. Daily trpr als differs frm hibernatin (冬眠). Hibernating animals enter a lw-energy state fr weeks r mnths at a time, while hummingbirds can enter trpr every night. But the
researchers say their studies were dne under labratry cnditins, nt the cnditins a bird wuld encunter in the wild. They say mre research is needed t understand thermregulatin in birds.
What des the new study shw?
Hummingbirds are sensitive t change in temperature.
Bdy temperature is vital t hummingbirds’ sleep.
Thermregulatin is cmmn amng birds.
Hummingbirds’ trpr culd be flexible.
What wuld happen t a hummingbird if its bdy temperature drps by 50°F at night?
It wuld regain nrmal bdy temperature withut help.
It wuld be in a state f hibernatin.
It wuld be in a state f hypthermia.
It wuld suffer a lt in winter.
What des Paragraph 5 tell us abut the deep trpr f a hummingbird?
It can greatly threaten its welfare and safety.
It ensures the bird gets enugh sleep.
It des great harm t its immune system.
It may cnsume plenty f energy.
Which f the fllwing statements shws the researchers’ pinin?
Their research methd is much t cmplex.
Their research is far frm cmplete.
It is challenging t understand thermregulatin in birds.
It is difficult t distinguish hibernatin frm daily trpr.

“Frgiveness is imprtant t children and adults in restring relatinships and limiting future cnflicts,” says Kelly Lynn Mulvey, the lead authr f a study and an assciate prfessr f psychlgy at Nrth Carlina State University. “But we didn’t knw much abut what makes children mre likely t frgive thers, particularly frm early childhd t adlescence. That’s what we wanted t find ut thrugh ur study.”
T that end, Kelly and her cllabratrs enlisted (招募)185 children, between the ages f 5 and 14, fr the study. The researchers cnducted an in-depth interview with each child that cllected
backgrund infrmatin and assessed the child’s “thery f mind” skills. “Thery f mind” is ne’s ability t understand that smene else’s beliefs, intentins, and desires are different frm his/her wn.
Researchers then led each child thrugh a series f scenaris (情境) invlving sme children wh
were n the green team (making them “in-grup”) while ther children were n the yellw team (making them “ut-grup”). In each scenari, interviewers asked the participants whether they were willing t frgive a grup that left them ut f a game r activity.
There were three main findings. First, children are mre likely t frgive smene if he/she has aplgized. Secnd, children are mre likely t frgive peple wh are “in-grup”. Third, the mre advanced a child’s “thery f mind” skills are, the mre likely he/she is t frgive thers.
The researchers identified tw things related t frgiveness that parents want t fcus n. One is t help kids understand hw imprtant it is t aplgize in a meaningful way. “Children are capable f discerning an insincere aplgy frm the way it is dne. Therefre, when it cmes t aplgy, it’s necessary t make it clear that smene understands why what he/she did is wrng. This, in turn, makes ther kids mre likely t give them a secnd chance,” Kelly says. The secnd fcus is n helping kids understand the pinins f ther peple, even if they are different frm theirs. “Helping yung peple develp these skills in childhd will aid them in cping with the diverse and cmplex wrld,” Kelly says.
What did Kelly’s research team intend t explre in their study?
What cntributes t children’s chance f ffering frgiveness.
Why children and adults are different in restring relatinships.
Hw children’s mind changes frm early childhd t adlescence.
In what way children shuld learn t make an aplgy effectively.
Accrding t the text, in which situatin is a child less likely t frgive thers?
They have aplgized many times.
The child lacks “thery f mind” skills.
They shw different beliefs and intentins.
The child knws little abut thers’ backgrund infrmatin.
What des the underlined wrd “discerning” in Paragraph 5 mean mst prbably?
Cnveying.B. Expecting.C. Sharing.D. Recgnizing.
What des the last paragraph mainly talk abut cncerning the research result?
Its influence n children’s explring the wrld.
Its psitive rle in helping parents guide their kids.
Its uses in helping kids learn mre abut themselves.
Its inspiratins fr kids learning t cpe with the cmplex wrld.
