Last week, our forum(论坛) asked if you had any funny or strange stories about using English. We didn’t expect to get so many posts! Here are some of our favourites, to remind us that some of the English we learn in the classroom is rather different from the English in the outside world.
    Name
    Comments
    Yancy
People say that the British always play safe with what they eat. Not true! I went to a summer school in Manchester and my English teacher was called Maggie. One day, a different teacher took our class. He told us that Maggie couldn’t teach that day because she had a frog in her throat. Poor Maggie—but why did she try to eat such a big frog? (135 comments)

When I first visited New York, I went to a downtown shopping centre to buy some winter boots. At the information desk at the entrance, I asked a lady where the shoe shop was. She said that it was on the first floor. So I went up to the first floor, but I couldn’t find any shoes. I decided to leave. When I was looking for the exit, I saw that shoes were actually sold downstairs on the ground floor, not the first floor. Why did she give me the wrong information? (128 comments)

The British must have really high standards. I was part of a student exchange programme between a university in England and my university in China. I spent days preparing and writing my first English paper. I knew I had done a good job and was looking forward to getting a positive comment. When I got the paper back, I found my teacher had written the comment “Not bad!” Not bad? But there weren’t any errors in my paper. (85 comments)
    21. What does the underlined sentence “she had a frog in her throat” probably mean?

    B. She has drawn a picture of frog on her face.
    C. She ate a big frog and her throat was blocked.
    D. She couldn’t speak clearly because her throat is dry.
解析:词句猜测题。根据扬希的帖子“One day, a different teacher took our class. He told us that Maggie couldn’t teach that day because she had a frog in her throat.”可知,有一天,另外一个老师来给我们代课。他说玛吉老师没法来上课,因为她的嗓子沙哑了。这里“she had a frog in her throat”是指“someone’s throat is dry or blocked”。故选D。
    答案:D
    22. According to Sophie and Zheng Xu, what may cause the misunderstandings?
    A. Both of them have difficulty in learning English.
    B. They didn’t know the words’ different meanings in other countries.
    C. The spellings are too hard for both of them to understand.

    答案:C
    B
Boys need friends, suffer when they don’t believe they have any, and worry over the ups and downs of relationships. Many adults believe that somehow boys need friends less than girls do, in truth, though, no boy is an island; boys value their friends throughout childhood and adolescence and are happier and healthier when they have strong relationships with persons of the same age.
Despite the common belief that girls are better at relationships, most boys consider their friends a very important part of their lives, and boys may actually be better at keeping friendships than girls are. A recent study of 10-to-15-year-old boys and girls found that girls’ friendships are actually more easily broken. Girls tend to say and do hurtful things to each other more frequently than boys, and girls are more hurt by the end of a friendship.
Boys love games with rules, competition, and doing things together. Boys seem to enjoy, even need the chance to test themselves against others, and many lasting friendships begin in the karate(空手道) class or on the basketball court. Competence(能力) and skill are widely respected; being picked last for a team or left out altogether is an experience that can be always in the thoughts of a boy for years.
As boys grow, the friendship becomes even more important, and it frequently widens to include girls. During the teen years, friends can become the most important part of a boy’s life—and a part in which his parents are not included. The confusion of being a teenager leads boys to form close connections with friends. There is the sense for many boys that a friend is someone who is “always there for me”, someone he can trust. The friendship of young boys can run surprisingly deep.
    24. What’s the common belief of adults in boys?
    A. They have the same friendship as girls.
    B. They have healthier friendship than girls.
    C. They don’t care about others as much as girls.
    D. They don’t value friendship as much as girls.
解析:细节理解题。根据文章第一段第二句“Many adults believe that somehow boys need friends less than girls do ...”可知,D项为正确答案。
    答案:D
    25. How is boys’ friendship according to the text?
    A. It doesn’t suffer from failure.
    B. It tends to be in small groups.
    C. It is usually built around active play.
    D. It can bear mutual hurt between friends.
解析:推理判断题。根据文章第三段第二句“Boys seem to enjoy, even need the chance to test themselves against others, and many lasting friendships begin in the karate class or on the basketball court.”可推知C项为正确答案。
    答案:C
    26. What does the author want to prove by mentioning the study in paragraph 2?
    A. Boys may be more active in a friendship.
    B. Most boys consider their friends very important.
    C. Many people believe girls are better at relationships.
    D. Boys may be better at keeping friendships than girls.
    解析:推理判断题。该研究显示女孩们的友谊更容易破裂,并解释了其原因。由此可推知,提到这项研究是想证实男孩子比女孩子更善于维护友谊。
    答案:D
    27. What is a suitable title for the text?
    A. Boys and Their Friendship
    B. Tips on Making Friends with Boys
    C. Friendships Between Boys and Girls
    D. Childhood and Adolescent Friendship

The prom(高中毕业舞会) is a day you’ll never forget. It’s one of the most important events of your senior year, one you certainly don’t want to miss.
About a month before the prom, I started my countdown. It took me about a week to find my dress. I bought it second-hand, but it was the most beautiful dress I’d ever seen—not too fancy, just the look I wanted. My shoes were bought from a supermarket. It might not seem the best place for shoes, but they were so comfortable that I couldn’t wait to dance all night long in them. My cousin Melissa did my hair and make-up. I received so many compliments(恭维) at the prom about my hair and make-up and I felt grateful to her.
I had much fun with a group of friends. We danced for four hours and I felt as if my feet were going to fall off. After that came the dessert buffet. There were four to five tables filled with sweets. I only had a piece of chocolate cheesecake and this little cup of strawberry dessert, but both were to die for.
By the time the magician arrived, everyone was super tired. I wanted to sleep, but I went out into the hall with friends and took pictures. At around 6:30 a.m., we headed into the breakfast hall for breakfast and goodbyes. Although it wasn’t the last time we would be seeing each other, it felt as if we were leaving behind so much.
The prom is going to be one of the best times in your life. Don’t think of it as a dance. Think of it as a life-changing moment. I know it was for me.
    28. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?

    C. Taking photos. D. Eating sweets.
    解析:细节理解题。根据第三段第二句中的danced,第四句话中的“filled with sweets”和第四段第二句话中的“took pictures”可知,作者在舞会上跳舞,吃甜品并拍照,只有B项没做。

People read books less often in these days. With the invention of radios, televisions and most recently, the Internet and computer games, it seems that reading books is no longer a popular activity. However, I believe that books are an important part of our lives.
Books offer an outstanding wealth of learning and are cheaper than taking a course. Books can make people cleverer, because heavy readers have greater knowledge of how things work and who or what people were.
Everything in today’s society requires reading. Imagine trying to do something as simple as reading the directions on a medicine bottle without good reading skills. Someone could not understand them and became very sick or even died.
Even something as simple as walking or driving through the city could become very dangerous without enough reading. Sometimes, you must be able to understand what is written and explain the meaning of them.
Some people say that reading is a waste of time and that we can do better things with our time. Even if we don’t read books, we still read every day, and reading books can strengthen(加强) our abilities. Reading is one of the greatest things we can do in our spare time.
With a book, you can travel anywhere you want, do anything you want, and talk to anyone you want. Reading is very important in our lives, no matter how old you are. So I think people should read books.
    32. What can we learn from the second paragraph?
    A. Reading can improve your memory.
    B. Reading can make you interesting and attractive.

    B. The directions on a medicine bottle.
    C. The good reading skills.
    D. The words a doctor tells a sick person.
解析:代词指代题。根据画线词所在句中的“became very sick or even died”以及该句的上文“Imagine trying to do something as simple as reading the directions on a medicine bottle without good reading skills.”可知,如果没有很好的阅读技能,有些人就读不懂药品瓶上的使用说明,病情会变得很严重,甚至死去。由此推断代词them指的是“药品瓶上的使用说明”。故选B。
    答案:B
    34. Why do some people disagree to read books?
    A. Walking in the city also needs reading skills.
    B. Driving through the city without enough reading is dangerous.
    C. Reading books is very helpful to strengthen our abilities.
    D. They think reading books just wastes their time.
解析:细节理解题。根据第五段第一句“Some people say that reading is a waste of time and that we can do better things with our time.”可知,一些人认为读书是浪费时间,他们认为可以用读书的时间做更好的事情。故选D。

    35. What is a suitable title for the text?

    C. Why People Should Read Books

    65. 解析:考查非谓语动词。句意参见上题。分析句子可知,已有谓语动词flew,所以动词plan应用非谓语动词形式。plan与主语He之间为逻辑上的主谓关系,应用动词-ing形式,表示主动。故填planning。
    答案:planning

    下面是Kate在英语网站上发的求助帖。假定你是她的好朋友Peter, 请你结合她帖子的内容,用英语给她回张帖子并给出你的建议。
    要求:
    (1)回帖内容要紧紧围绕求助帖,可适当发挥,但必须健康向上;
    (2)意思通顺,语气连贯,过渡自然;
    (3)80词左右,开头和结尾已给出,不计入总词数。
    Dear friends,
I don’t feel well these days. I get a lot of headaches because I have no time to exercise. My parents want me to get better grades, so they send me to many after-school clubs, including Language Learning Club, Music Club and Maths Club, etc. Also, my elder brother isn’t nice to me. He refuses to let me watch my favourite TV show. Instead, he watches whatever he wants until late at night. I don’t think this is fair. At home I always feel lonely and nervous. I’m always under too much pressure.
Is that normal? What can I do? Could you please give me some advice?
    Kate
    Dear Kate,
It’s not easy being your age, and it’s normal to have these feelings. Why don’t you talk about your feelings with your parents? You’ve had so much pressure because of schoolwork. Working hard at school is very important, but you also need some free time to relax yourself. Try to communicate with your parents, and make them allow you to do things you like.
Besides, why not sit down and communicate with your brother? You should explain that you don’t mind him watching TV all the time. However, he should let you watch your favourite TV show. I hope things will be better for you soon.
    Peter
    第二节(满分25分)
    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The cheerful girl, Jenny, with golden hair was almost five. Waiting with her mother at the checkout stand, she saw a necklace of shining white pearls in a pink metal box. Quickly the mother checked the back of the little metal box and then looked back into the begging blue eyes of her little girl’s upturned face. “A dollar and ninety-five cents. That’s almost $2. If you really want it, I’ll think of some extra housework for you and in no time you can save enough money to buy it for yourself. Besides, you might get another dollar bill from grandma on your birthday a week away.”
After dinner, they came back home. She did more housework and even she asked the neighbour for housework for ten cents. On her birthday, grandma did give her another new dollar bill and at least she had enough money to buy the cheap necklace from the dime store(廉价商店).
Jenny loved her pearl necklace. She wore it everywhere. The only time she took it off was when swimming.
Jenny had a very loving daddy and every night when she was ready for bed, he would stop whatever he was doing and come upstairs to read her a story. One night when he finished the story, he asked Jenny, “Do you love me?”
“Oh, Daddy. You know that I love you.”
    “Then give me your necklace.”
“Oh, Daddy, not my pearl necklace. But you can have my doll—the one you gave me. She’s my favourite.”
“That’s okay, honey. Daddy loves you. Good night.” And he brushed her cheek with a kiss.
Daddy repeated the same request about a week after the story time. However, Jenny refused and wouldn’t give up her necklace to her daddy.
    注意:
    (1)续写词数应为150左右;
    (2)请按如下格式作答。
A few nights later when her daddy came in, Jenny was sitting on her bed, waiting for her father. As he came home, he noticed her lips were trembling and tears rolled down her cheeks.“What’s it, Jenny? What’s the matter?” Jenny didn’t say anything but lifted the metal box up with her little hand to her daddy. And when she opened it, there was her little pearl necklace. With a little trembling voice, she finally said,“Here, Daddy. It’s for you.” She gave her treasure to her father eventually.
With tears in his eyes, Jenny’s kind daddy reached out one hand to take the cheap necklace. Meanwhile, with the other hand he reached into his pocket and pulled out a blue box with a necklace made of natural pearls and gave it to Jenny. He had had it all time.He was just waiting for her to give up the cheap necklace made of artificial pearls so he could give her a real valuable treasure. Jenny was very glad to take the necklace and a big smile appeared on her face. She said, “It’s very kind of you, Daddy!”
