Several years ago, my father decided to volunteer at the local children hospital. My dad loved kids. It was the perfect job for him. He would talk to them and play with them and do arts and crafts with them.
There was a girl, Karen, who had been admitted with a rare disease that paralyzed (使麻痹) her from the neck down. She was very depressed. My dad decided to try to help her. He started visiting her in her room, bringing paints, brushes and paper. He stood the paper up against a backing, put the paintbrush in his mouth and began to paint. He didn’t use his hands at all. Only his head would move. He would visit her whenever he could and paint for her, telling her, “See, you can do anything you set your mind to.”
At the end of the day, she began to paint using her mouth, and she and my dad became friends. Soon after, the little girl was discharged (允许出院) because the doctors felt there was nothing else they could do for her. Some time later, my dad was at the volunteer counter in the lobby (门厅) of the hospital when Karen came in. She ran straight over to my dad and hugged him really tight. She gave my dad a picture she had done using her hands. At the bottom it read “Thank you for helping me walk”.
My dad would cry every time he told us this story. He would say sometimes love is more powerful than doctors, and my dad who died just a few months after the little girl gave him the picture—loved every single child in that hospital.

A. Because he liked pictures very much.
B. Because she wanted to show her appreciation for his help.
C. Because he was badly ill.
D. Because her mother wanted her to do that.
27. What can we infer from the passage?
A. The girl was discharged after she had recovered from her disease.
B. The girl became a famous painter at the end.
C. Love has a magic power and can make wonders.
D. My dad regretted helping the girl.

Jim Thorpe, an American Indian from Oklahoma, is one of the greatest athletes of all time. He had amazing athletic abilities and was well-known during his lifetime, yet that did not make Thorpe a stranger to difficult situations.
Thorpe developed his extraordinary athletic skills in his youth through hard labor. Many would say his childhood was not easy. He grew up poor and at age 9 his twin brother passed away and a few years later he lost both of his parents.
But that did not stop him from doing what he loved and pursuing his dreams. Nothing seemed to stop him. Just hours before Thorpe was going to compete in the 1912 Olympics, somebody stole his shoes. Thorpe improvised (临时拼凑) by getting shoes out of the garbage. The shoes were in two different sizes. He wore an extra pair of socks on one foot to even them up.
He still went on to win two gold medals—winning each event he competed in except for one, the javelin (标枪比赛). The javelin was the only event he didn’t win, probably because he had never competed in that event before. It is interesting to note that Thorpe had tried to throw the javelin once before in the Olympic trials. At the time, he didn’t know that he could throw it with a running start. He threw it standing still and was placed second.
At the Olympics, he also took part in the decathlon (十项全能运动). He finished first in two events, third in four events, and fourth in two more. Thorpe ended up finishing third in the world. He was undoubtedly a dominating force that couldn’t be stopped and just kept on going.
I think Paul Dughi said it best, “It’s hard to imagine now that pro athletes get paid millions of dollars just to wear a particular brand of shoes. For Jim Thorpe, it didn’t matter what kind he wore.”
28. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A. Thorpe suffered many difficulties despite his success.
B. Thorpe’s success was no guarantee of a richer life.
C. Thorpe’s career brought him both gains and losses.
D. The difficult situations Thorpe met with led to his success.
29. Why did Thorpe wear more socks on one foot?
A. To stop the foot from being injured. B. To make the shoe fit the foot.
C. To stop the shoe from being stolen. D. To show his problem⁃solving skills.
30. What most likely led to Thorpe’s failure to win the javelin?
A. The loss of his own sports shoes. B. A casual attitude towards the event.
C. A shortage of talent for the event. D. The lack of experience in the event.
31. Which of the following words can best describe Jim Thorpe?
A. Outgoing and enthusiastic. B. Honest and creative.
C. Tough and strong-minded. D. Selfless and good-tempered.
D
“Funny or die”, thanks to a study published in April in a medical journal, has a whole new meaning. Women with a strong sense of humor were found to live longer although they were ill, especially for those with heart problems and infection. Happy men seemed to be protected against infection.
The researchers reported the findings from a 15-year study on the connection between the sense of humor and death among 53,556 women and men in their country. The team studied the influence of humor on people’s way of thinking, social skills and emotion development, and examined death from different conditions: heart problems, infection and other health problems.
The findings showed that for women, those who had high scores on a humorous way of thinking had a 48 percent less risk of death from all causes, a 73 percent lower risk of death from heart problems and an 83 percent lower risk of death from infection. For men, a connection was found only for the risk of death from infection — those with high humor scores had a 74 percent reduced risk. The researchers suggested the sex differences could be due to a small decrease in humor scores as the men aged. No connection was found for the influence of rumor on social skills and emotion development.
“The humorous way of thinking plays an important role in people’s personality (性格) and may influence the way people cope with everyday life,” said study co-researcher Sven Svebak. “In this way, it may help reduce fighting in daily life, preventing the build-up of stress.” Although the sense of humor is a natural characteristic (特征), it can also be developed through social activities.
“I expect that children whose parents have no sense of humor when facing challenges are less likely to develop their sense of humor to cope with everyday life when they grow up,” Sven Svebak said. “But if you had a humorless childhood, never fear — studies show people can learn to be humorous at any age.”
32. What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A. Joyful women can live longer than happy men.
B. Humor could benefit people’s health.
C. Women who seldom laugh may fall ill easily.
D. Humor makes people pay more attention to their health.
33. Why do men have a higher risk of death from infection than women?
A. Because men have poor memories as they age.
B. Because men become less humorous as they grow older.
C. Because men have bad sleeping quality as they grow older.
D. Because men take part in fewer social activities as they age.
34. How does the author show the research findings?
A. By listing data. B. By giving examples.
C. By stating arguments. D. By making experiments.
35. Which of the following would Sven Svebak agree with?
A. Humorless people have an unhappy childhood.
B. Children must learn to be humorous at an early age.
C. Children with humorous parents may better deal with pressure in life.
D. Parents with a sense of humor are better at child education.

How to Be Strong-minded

Quiet your mind. Practice letting go of unnecessary worries and distractions, so you can focus on more important things. If you want to regain focus in the moment, you can try writing down what keeps popping up in your head. When you get these thoughts out of your head, you’ll be able to focus better. 37 .
Discover what brings you joy. Ask yourself when you’ve felt happiest or most fulfilled and why. Then, identify the reasons why those experiences were so rewarding for you. Try to reproduce these experiences more often. Also, ask people who you’re close to about yourself. 38 . This can be a powerful tool in self-discovery.
39 Think about what drives you to achieve in your day-to-day life. If you often find yourself just trying to get through the day, ask yourself what you would do with your time if you didn’t have to worry about basic concerns like money.
Create actionable short-term goals. Now that you have a general understanding of where you want to go, break those long-term goals down. 40 . Try to set SMART. goals that are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time-bound.
A.Find out what motivates you
B.Take more opportunities to help others
C.Try the following tips if you want a stronger mind.
D.Being strong-minded can help you achieve the unachievable.
E.Devote some time later to attending to these thoughts or ideas
F.Ask them what characteristics describe you when you’re at your happiest

There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do .
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started
frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the
burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely .
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. M: No, he's able to get things done by himself thanks to a high tech computer system which he carries around with him.
W: I can't see anything. Where is it then? M: It’s actually located inside his chest area.

They say it can look however you want it to一you can choose the color and the words you put on it. The only thing is it must have a picture somewhere on it. You must include that in your design.
