“I’ve dne such a gd jb f pretending t be an utging persn that friends and
family are shcked when I tell them I’m nt.” Ever since she was a teen, Amanda wuld adpt the behaviurs f the peple arund her t fit in, while hiding her true persnality. And smetimes it was hard t tell wh was actually the real Amanda.
This is Scial Masking, the prcess f cvering yur natural way f interacting with thers s yu can feel accepted. Scial Maskers aren’t trying t cheat anyne; rather, they are hping t blend in with everybdy else. “Scial Masking is a learned set f pattern-matching behaviurs, mvements and actins where yu fllw ther’s suit t fit in rather than stand ut,” explains psychtherapist Dipti Tait.
In a wrld that ften tells us t just be urselves, yu might wnder why many f us rely n these Scial Masking behaviurs. “Scial Masking happens because we want t fit in,” says Tait. The mask is a prtectin against ur self-dubt. Hwever, accrding t psychlgist Quinn-Cirill, scial media may have made it even harder t be urselves. She ntes that it gives us set images and vides that make us believe this is hw we shuld be. It strengthens the belief that yu are nt gd enugh as yu are and break dwn yur cnfidence ver time. The mre Amanda masked, the mre she wuld lse faith.
S hw can yu break the cycle? Getting rid f the mask invlves wrking t imprve yur self-wrth, self-belief and self-respect. Once yu hear thse damaging thughts that tell yu it’s nt OK t be yurself, take actin and stp it. Ding this repeatedly ver a perid gives thse self-defeating thughts less pwer and imprves yur self-belief.
Why des the authr mentin Amanda in Paragraph 1?
T prvide backgrund infrmatin.
T give an example f a Scial Masker.
T intrduce the tpic f Scial Masking.
T tell the stry f Amanda, wh hides her true persnality.

A. Uncncerned.B. Apprving.C. Objective.D. Negative.
What is the authr’s advice n remving scial masks?
A. Regaining cnfidence.B. Ding exercise regularly.
C. Turning t a prfessinal.D. Engaging in scial activities. C
When I mentined t sme friends that we all have accents, mst f them prudly
replied, “Well, I speak perfect English/ Chinese/ etc.” But this kind f misses the pint.
Mre ften than nt, what we mean when we say smene “has an accent” is that their accent is different frm the lcal ne, r that prnunciatins are different frm ur wn. But this definitin f accents is limiting and culd give rise t prejudice ( 偏见). Funnily enugh, in terms f the language study, every persn speaks with an accent. It is the regular differences in hw we prduce sunds that define ur accents. Even if yu dn’t hear it yurself, yu speak with sme srt f accent. In this sense, it’s pintless t pint ut that smene “has an accent”. We all d!
Every persn speaks a dialect, t. In the field f language study, a dialect is a versin f a language that is characterized by its variatins f structure, phrases and wrds. Fr instance, “Yu gt eat r nt?” (meaning “Have yu eaten?”) is an acceptable and understd questin in Singapre Oral English. The fact that this expressin wuld cause a standard American English speaker t take pause desn’t mean that Singapre Oral English is “wrng” r “ungrammatical”. The sentence is well-frmed and clearly cmmunicative, accrding t native Singapre English speakers’ slid system f grammar. Why shuld it be wrng just because it’s different?
We need t mve beynd a narrw cnceptin f accents and dialects — fr the benefit f everyne.
Language differences like these prvide insights int peple’s cultural experiences and backgrunds. In a glbal age, the way ne speaks is a distinct ( 明 显 的 ) part f ne’s identity. Mst peple wuld be happy t talk abut the cultures behind their speech. We’d learn mre abut the wrld we live in and make friends alng the way.
What des the authr think f his/ her friends’ respnse in paragraph 1?
A. It reflects their language levels.B. It reflects their self cnfidence.
C. It misses the real meaning f accents. D. It misses the pint f cmmunicatin.
Why des the authr use the example f Singapre Oral English?
A. T justify the use f dialects.B. T shw the diversity f dialects.
C. T crrect a grammatical mistake.D. T highlight a traditinal apprach.
What des the authr recmmend us t d in the last paragraph?
Learn t speak with yur lcal dialect.
Seek fr an fficial definitin f accents.
Distinguish ur lcal languages frm thers’.
Appreciate the value f accents and dialects.
What can be a suitable title fr this passage?
A. Everyne Has an AccentB. Standard English Is at Risk
C. Accents Enhance Our IdentitiesD. Dialects Lead t Misunderstanding
D
In the ffice f remte sensing scientist Liu Shachuang, there is a huge phtgraph f a camel he phtgraphed a decade ag in Xinjiang. He waited fr hurs by a pl f water in the Gbi Desert t capture the image.
Since 2012, he has led a team in tracking and studying wild camels using satellite remte sensing technlgy.
Unlike zlgists wh fcus n species, Liu has studied the interrelatinship between endangered animals and their envirnment, which he believes will help develp better prtectin strategies (策略) in the face f climate change.
His interest in wild camels began when his team tested a prttype (雏形) design f
the lunar rver Yutu in the desert. Living in the harsh deserts in nrthwestern China and suthwestern Mnglia, camels are listed as critically endangered animals. Experts
estimate that the ppulatin f this species is currently less than 1,000, f which arund 650 are in China.
“Ten years ag, the research relied nly n human bservatin, which was very primitive,” Liu says. Because camels are fully migratry (迁徙的) and can travel ver lng distances, scientists used t learn their habits by studying hf prints and drppings. It was hard t find ne camel in the desert, let alne track it. But Liu thught his expertise in satellite navigatin (导航) and remte sensing might cme in useful in the study f wild camels.
It was nt easy at first. Liu learned zlgy frm scratch (白手起家). His team had t spend several weeks each year braving dust and sandstrms in the vastness f the Gbi Desert seeking ut camels. A scar n his right eyebrw is the result f a rllver accident n a rugged muntain rad in Xinjiang.
“The mst exciting mment was attaching a satellite psitining cllar t a wild camel.” The tracking cllar, equipped with special receivers, weighs nly a few hundred grams. It can detach (分离) autmatically and will nt have a negative impact n the daily lives f the animals. The lcatins f the tracked animals are transmitted ( 传 送 ) via satellite every day. Based n the data, scientists can get t knw their migratry paths, living envirnments and pssible threats they may meet with.
Fr Liu, it is wrth the significant sci-tech effrt t study such a rare species. He adds wildlife prtectin and research will becme mre precise and efficient with the help f technlgy.
What was it that made tracking wild camels difficult?
Primitive tls were used in human bservatin.
Hf prints and drppings were never t be seen.
The number f camels experienced a sharp decline.
Massive (大规模的) migratin made camels cver huge distances.
What can be inferred frm the scar n his right eyebrw?
The stress he met with in his wrk.
His carelessness in carrying ut his research.
The rugh cnditins under which he wrked.
His inexperience at the very beginning f his wrk.
What des paragraph 7 mainly fcus n?
A. The functin f the tracking cllar.B. The definitin f the tracking cllar.
C. The frmatin f the tracking cllar.D. The imprtance f the tracking cllar.
Which f the fllwing can best describe Liu Shachuang?
A. Generus (慷慨的) and ambitius.B. Cnfident and grateful (感激的).
C. Creative and determined (坚定的).D. Optimistic (乐观的) and mdest.
