①How would you like to build a time machine? Paper, sticks, glue and string are all you need. Put them together to build a kite. A kite connects you to the past.
②About 1,300 years ago, Chinese travelers took kites to Japan. Soon kites filled the skies there. Kites reached Thailand about 700 years ago. During floods, Thai farmers flew kites over their fields. They hoped the kites would drive away the clouds and stop the rain. Over time, kites flew their way out of Asia. Today, kites are a passion all over the world. Kite fans meet at festivals in many parts of the world and have great fun.
③In China, kites helped people during wartime. One Chinese story tells how soldiers put noise makers on kites and flew them at night over the enemy (敌人) camp. The enemies were frightened by the noise and ran away.
④Kites have also helped people understand the natural world. In 1749, for example, thermometers were tied to kites to measure temperatures. In 1906, cameras hanging from kites took pictures of San Francisco, California after an earthquake. The photos helped people plan what to do.
⑤Kites also helped inventors find out how to make airplanes. The Wright brothers studied how kites flew, which helped them make the first successful airplane.
⑥Since the ancient Chinese first set their kites into the air, people have loved flying kites. Kites give us way to celebrate, relax and explore. So go fly a kite! Enjoy the feeling of wonder that kite flyers have felt for centuries.

As a nature photographer, I have to face the wind and the rain bravely, but I still enjoy working outside in the wild. One of the best things about this job is that you can observe (观察) animals in their natural environment.
My favourite place to take photos is Yellowstone National Park. As the world's first national park, Yellowstone is famous for the variety of its wildlife, but it is probably best known for its bears. These huge, strong animals can live for 30 years. Despite (尽管) a weight of up to 300 kilograms, they can run at a speed of around 64 kilometres per hour and are also excellent swimmers.
Last spring in Yellowstone, I followed a path that took me through a dark forest. When I finally stepped out of the trees, the view was breathtaking. An eagle (雕) flew over the snowcapped (积雪的) mountains, which were reflected in the still lake below. While I was photographing this amazing scene, I suddenly had a feeling that I was being watched. Slowly, and with the camera still held to my eye, I turned.. and froze. Only metres away from me was a bear. With water falling off its thick, brown hair, the bear stared back at me. Time stood still as the bear and l both waited to see who would move first. My legs started shaking. Somehow, I forced my finger to press the button. A second later, the bear turned and ran back into the forest. When I recovered from the shock, I looked at my camera. My most frightening but magical experience was now kept forever in a single image.
From time to time I look at the photo as a reminder to show respect to all animals. It is after all we who are the visitors to their world.

"Don't judge a book by its cover." the old saying goes. As a teenager, dark thoughts about your physical appearance can hang over you like a rain cloud. Do I look fat in these jeans? Do others think I am too short? Is everyone laughing at my new hairstyle behind my back? These thoughts can have a negative effect on people of shape or size, and it is important to guard against the causes behind them.
Standards (标准) of beauty in the media can influence (影响) what you think of your physical appearance. Teens who try to copy the looks of their favourite stars are fighting a losing battle-these standards are impossible for most of the population to live up to. Your friends also influence the way you view your physical appearance. If you have friends who are good-looking or have a great fashion sense, it can feel like you are living in their shadow. Social media makes this problem even worse. Your friends may post a never-ending series of photos online to show off beautiful dresses or strong bodies, and it becomes easier for you to compare yourself to them.
But there are certainly ways to deal with them. First, be careful not to follow popular beauty standards blindly. They are out of reach for 99% of us, so it is better to just forget about them.
Another tip is to remind yourself you are unique (独一无二的). Keep in mind that your family and friends love you just the way you are. Talk about your feelings with someone you trust. Hearing how much they value you can help you feel comfortable. Focusing on your strengths also helps you build your confidence. Everyone has own talents-you may be good at painting or playing the piano, so take pride in things you do well.
Finally, it is a good idea to try to direct your attention away from negative thoughts. You should do something you enjoy. Read a book you like, or take part in a social activity, like playing a ball game with your friends. These things can help you take your mind off matters that worry you and make you feel good about yourself.
You may often judge yourself by what is on the outside, not on the inside. However, like a book, your contents are much more important than your cover. If you can learn to see the good things about yourself—your personality, your value to others, your achievements—you will soon begin to love yourself just the way you are.
27. Why does the writer ask a group of questions in Paragraph 1?
A. To make a survey. B. To lead in the topic.
C. To ask readers for help. D. To give background information.
28. Why does social media make the problem even worse?
A. Social media is filled with negative thoughts
B. Teens often copy the looks of stars on social media
C. It's easier for teens to compare themselves with their friends
D. Teens often follow some bad examples on social media.
29. Which of the following will build your confidence?
A. Talking about your feelings with someone else.
B. Improving your physical appearance
C. Working hard to be stronger.
D. Being proud of things you do well.
30. What is the purpose of this article?
A. Tell readers a story.
B. Introduce a saying
C. Argue for an opinion.
D. Report a piece of news.
31. What's the main idea of the passage? (Use one sentence.)
