Text 10
Held in August in London every year, the Notting Hill Carnival is the largest street festival in Europe. It originated in 1964 as a way for Afro-Caribbean communities to celebrate their own cultures and traditions. It takes place on the August bank holiday weekend in the streets of west London. Most of the residents are immigrants from the Caribbean and Africa. The first carnival was an attempt to show off the steel band musicians who played in Earls Court in London every weekend. When the bands went through the streets of Notting Hill, they drew black residents out on to the streets, reminding them of the Caribbean homes they had left behind. It was attended by less than 1,000 people in 1964,but was a great success. Not having been allowed to hold festivals of their own for a long time, these people could express themselves freely in songs and dances for the first time.Dressing up in colorful costumes, even whitening their faces with flour or wearing white masks, they established a tradition that continues in today’s Notting Hill Carnival.Nowadays,it attracts around one million people annually, making it an important event in British culture.

I’m ashamed to say that, as the years have gone by, I haven’t taken the time to walk around my neighborhood.Sure, I’m out and about all the time but always in the car to my way out of the neighborhood.
The main reason is that I don’t love my neighborhood anymore.I’m referring to the place, not the people. My street used to come to an end in a forest. We would walk the dogs in the forest that always had nice, seasonal flowers and shrubs (灌木) coming up all year round. Now it’s gone and been replaced (取代) by a forest of high-rise buildings.
Pretty down because of some annoying (烦人的) office work these days,I decided I just had to get out and walk today. It started at the building “forest”.I still felt pain in my heart from the sight and I missed those days of walking the dog and taking in the beauty of the trees and shrubs and flowers.
As I continued on, though, I came across this.
Some very artistic children created some lovely, colorful artwork and I couldn’t help but think they must have been trying to make me and everyone else just feel better. It certainly worked on me.Thank you, thoughtful artists!
At one point, I saw a man walking across one of the wider, busier streets.I shouted, “I just wanted to say hi to someone!” He answered, looking very friendly and happy, smiling and waving (挥手).
As I approached (走近) the last couple of streets of my walk, the winds began to blow. There were dark clouds behind me so I decided to head home.Luckily, the rain didn’t come down until I was resting on the sofa.
I was glad I went out.

Unluckily, there are some rules that teenagers should be allowed to learn in school, but not. They are important to teenagers, although not all of them have to do with their subjects.
Rule 1: Life is not fair. Try to learn to get used to it. Many people won't understand the real meaning of this rule until they've failed to find fairness again and again.
Rule 2: The real world won't care about you as much as your school does. It will expect you to learn to understand the real world after you leave school. Then you'll be sure of what to do with real world.
Rule 3: If you think your teacher is terrible, wait until you get a boss. Your boss won't ask how you feel about your work and will never give you more care or help. He'll only care about how much money you can help him earn.
Rule 4: TV is not real life. Your life is not a sitcom Your problems won't be solved in 30 or 45 minutes. In real life, people usually have to leave the coffee stores to look for jobs.
Rule 5: Smoking does not make you look cool. Instead, it makes you look moronic (低能的). At the same time, purple hair and pierced body parts make you look like a silly kid. A grownup teenager should know how to be smart.
1.How will the real world treat teenagers when they leave school?
A.It'll care about them as their schools do. B.It'll tell them what it's really like.
C.It'll give them more help and chances. D.It'll explain to them how to be smart.
根据第三段内容“The real world won't care about you as much as your school does. It will expect you to learn to understand the real world after you leave school.”
2.What does the underlined word “earn” mean in Chinese?
故选A项。
3.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.These rules can be learned at school by teenagers.
B.For teenagers, life is like a sitcom and it's always full of joy and surprises.
C.Smoking should not be allowed when you are a teenager at school.
D.Teenagers will meet fair bosses when they go to work.
根据最后一段关键句“Smoking does not make you look cool. Instead, it makes you look moronic (低能的).”和“A grownup teenager should know how to be smart.”
4.What can we infer from the passage?
A.The writer might be a teacher who has much experience.
B.No teenagers can really understand the real world.
C.Almost all teenagers won't be able to get used to the future life.
D.There is much more for teenagers to learn when they leave school.
根据第一段内容“Unluckily, there are some rules that teenagers should be allowed to learn in school, but not. They are important to teenagers, although not all of them have to do with their subjects.”

Have you ever wondered why people drive on a different side of the road? It might seem bizarre that U.K.drivers stay on the left, but they’re not the only ones.Around 35 percent of the world population do the same, including people in Ireland,Japan, and some Caribbean islands.
Originally, almost everybody traveled on the left side of the road. However, their way of transport was quite different from today:Think about four legs instead of four wheels. For Medieval swordsmen on horseback,it made sense to keep to the left to have their right arms closer to their enemies.Getting on or off was also easier from the left side of the horse, and safer done by the side of the road than in the center.
So why did people stop traveling on the left? Things changed in the late 1700s when large wagons(货车) pulled by several pairs of horses were used to transport farm products in France and the United States. The wagon driver sat behind the left horse, with his right arm free to use his whip to keep the horses moving.Since he was sitting on the left position,he wanted other wagons to pass on his left,so he kept to the right side of the road.
The British Government refused to give up their left-hand driving ways, and in 1773 introduced the General Highways Act,which encouraged driving on the left. This was later made law thanks to The Highway Act of 1835.
When Henry Ford showed his Model T in 1908,the driver’s seat was on the left, meaning that cars would have to drive on the right hand side of the road to allow front and back passengers to exit the car onto the roadside. However,British drivers remain on the left, and this is highly unlikely to change.
1.What does the underlined word “bizarre” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A.Funny. B.Strange.
C.Wrong. D.Difficult.
根据下文的...but they’re not the only ones.Around 35 percent of the world population do the same...
2.Why did people riding the horse travel on the left in history?
A.It was safer to keep on the left.
B.It was easier to carry goods.
C.It was easier for them to fight.
D.It was necessary to control the horse.
3.What made drivers of large wagons travel on the right?
A.Their sitting position.
B.The road conditions.
C.The number of horses.
D.The products in the wagons.
故选A。
4.Which of the following may be the best title for the text?
A.UK Drivers Still Go on the Left
B.Why People Like Sitting on the Left Side
C.The History of Transportation Means
D.The Reasons for Different Driving Sides
How to Plan a Vacation?
A vacation is supposed to be a fun and relaxing break from your everyday life.
1 Be ready to enjoy your time off by planning your travel, accommodations, and activities ahead of time. Giving yourself plenty of time to plan can be a fun way to build up excitement for your vacation.
Decide why you want to travel. 2 Thinking of whether your goal is to relax and unwind, have new adventures, see famous or ancient sights, or provide your children with lifelong memories will determine what kind of destination you should choose.
3 Instead of making this a chore, have it be a fun activity. Over the course of a few days, weeks or other long duration you wish, spend some time talking about each place and why it would make a good destination.
Research destination costs. While you may take more time after choosing a destination to find great deals on travel and hotel arrangements, doing a quick online search of approximate costs to travel to each destination may help you narrow your choices based on your budget.
Choose a destination. 4 If there is disagreement, find a way to compromise.
Choose when to travel. Depending on the season, a destination which is normally too hot or cold for you to consider might have a more enjoyable climate at a different time of the year. 5
A.Consider everyone who will be travelling with you.
B.Discuss possible destinations with your fellow travellers.
C.Ideally, everyone who is travelling will agree on the same place.
D.However, a poorly planned vacation can end up being a major headache.
E.If you know why you want to leave home, choosing a destination will be easier.
F.This might also be reflected in a lower cost, if you decide to travel out of season.
G. Keep in mind expenses to travel, stay and eat while you are developing your estimates.
1.D 根据上文“A vacation is supposed to be a fun and relaxing break from your everyday life.”和下文“Be ready to enjoy your time off by planning your travel, accommodations, and activities ahead of time.”
2.E 根据上文“Decide why you want to travel.”
根据下文“Over the course of a few days, weeks or other long duration you wish, spend some time talking about each place and why it would make a good destination.
5.F 由本段的主题句“Choose when to travel.”
Senior Zach Snow flew to Germany in July of 2017.With __1__ of only staying for a week, his then stationed dad presented him with a __2__ opportunity (机会) to discover the world.
“My dad was staying in Stuttgart, Germany, working for the Army, and __3__ me to stay with him for the school year,” Snow stated.
“I wanted to say no because I wanted to spend my senior year with my friends,” Snow added.“I __4__ staying because my dad kind of forced me to stay.”__5__ for the first little while, Snow decided to __6__ and make the most out of his situation.“I found out, since I was in the heart of Europe, that I would try to __7__ as much as I could.I started off with going to Paris,” stated Snow.
With the __8__ of easily accessible (可使用的) trains throughout the continent, Snow went from country to country.
“I would __9__ the train in Germany and go to places like Amsterdam and Prague,”noted Snow.“Anywhere you could think of, I would be a train away.”
When mentioning his __10__ experience in Europe, Snow recalls his experience in Spain at the Rafael Nadal tennis training center.
“I spent a week there __11__ everything in my game, learning from Rafael Nadal—the best player in the world.I would play tennis all day on some of the __12__ courts (球场) I have ever seen.I even got the __13__ to meet him, which was super cool,”shared Snow.
“Even though I was in Germany, I attended an American high school on the Army base my dad __14__ at.All the classes were taught in English,so it was basically like going to Freedom High School with a lot of __15__ faces,” said the senior, who is now returning stateside.
1.A.successes B.moments C.expectations D.feelings
答案 C 由该空后的only staying for a week与下文中的My dad...stay with him for the school year和I wanted to spend my senior year with my friends 故expectations(预料,预期)符合语境。
2.A.unique B.final C.historical D.fair
unique(独特的)是对他这次经历的总结。
3.A.chose B.offered C.paid D.allowed
答案 B 由上文中的only staying for a week可知,让Snow在德国待一个学年是父亲的提议,而非Snow自己的意愿,故A、D两项首先排除。C项paid虽具有干扰性,但B项offered与下文中的my dad kind of forced me to stay更能体现这一想法出自父亲。
4.A.gave up B.minded C.ended up D.avoided
5.A.Frightened B.reddened C.Satisfied D.Saddened
6.A.try B.return C.join D.organize

1.building 此处是固定短语succeed in doing sth.
故填it。

I was lacking in everything needed to start a new friendship.
My parents moved to the town when they decided to look for new jobs but they didn't realize I was really hurt when I said goodbye to my old friends. It felt awful to be a new student in the school and when my classmates were chatting, what I could do was to be caught up in my thoughts watching the clouds outside the window. I was not good at math or history; nor was I good at drawing or dancing. I was shy and timid. I had a few friends back at my hometown and it seemed that they were the only ones who I could be friends with for my whole life. I felt I had achieved a point of saturation with regard to having friends and I could make no further addition to my friend list. I was ashamed of myself, so I believed I deserved no notice from others until Emily came to my world.
Emily was fearless, outspoken and easy to go. She was everything I was not and I was too shy to come out of my shell. I met Emily in school almost every day and yet I never talked to her. We were in the same class but we were like poles apart. How I wished I could be like her or at least be a friend of hers!
It was another ordinary day.
I wandered to the bus stop in the morning and waited for the school bus. Birds were singing songs with their friends but who could I sing songs with? I got on the bus and went straight to my usual seat, complaining in a low voice about getting up early and going to school like every other day, and about how things were going to be the same all over again. Little did I realize something different would happen that day.
注意:
1.续写的词数应为150左右;
When I got up to get off the bus, my schoolbag was stuck in the armrest. ______
I got noticed by Emily, who brought me courage to start a new friendship!
When I got up to get off the bus, my schoolbag was stuck in the armrest. I didn't notice it and stood up with all my strength. Unfortunately, my schoolbag was torn apart and all the contents fell on the ground. I knelt down to pick them up. Suddenly, I saw a hand passing me some of the books. I looked up and found it was Emily who was helping me. With her help, I put all the contents back to my schoolbag. I began to talk with her and was surprised to find that we had much in common.
I got noticed by Emily, who brought me courage to start a new friendship! One day when I told her that I admired her and how I wished to be a friend of hers, she said, “We have already been friends.” I felt so happy that I even sang a song. Hearing my song, she thought highly of it and asked me to teach her to sing it. She made me realize how unique I was and at last I came out of my shell.
