Technology has become so advanced that the previously impossible seems to occur on a daily basis. And yet we still have no cure for the common cold.
According to Peter Barlow, a professor at Edinburgh Napier University in the UK, the main challenge lies in the many different types of cold viruses. There are at least 160 types. They mutate (突变) so easily that they quickly become resistant to drugs, or learn to hide from our immune systems. In other words, a single cure isn’t likely to work on every type of cold.
However, researches from Stanford University have found a possible answer. They discovered a protein(蛋白质) that the viruses need. Without it, they can’t spread inside our body. To identify the gene which produces the specific protein needed by the viruses, researchers used a gene-editing technique to test all genes. These modified(改变的) cells were then exposed to a range of viruses, including ones causing the common cold. All the viruses were unable to replicate(复制)inside cells without a gene that produces that specific protein.
Then, they tested genetically modified(转基因的) mice, which were completely unable to produce the protein. The mice were able to live normal lives without the protein. “Lacking that gene protected the mice completely form viral infection,” associate professor Jan Carette, from Stanford, said. “These mice would always die, but they lived and we saw a very strong reduction in copying viruses and very strong protection. We have identified a fantastic tart that all cold viruses require and depend on. Take that away and the virus really has no chance.”
Carette said the plan was to find a drug which could temporarily control the protein, instead of producing genetically modified humans.
    24. Which of the following can best describe common cold viruses?
A.Severe and deadly. B. Mysterious and delicate.
C.Various and changeable. D. Challenging and oversized.
    25. How does the specific protein work?
A.By helping viruses spread. B.By reducing physical infection.
C.By fighting against other viruses. D.By strengthening the immune(免疫) system.
    26. What can we learn about the genetically modified mice?
A.They were seriously ill. B.They were able to survive.
C.They caught cold easily. D.They produced more protein.
27.What is the purpose of the research?
A.To test a new drug. B.To fight against the common cold.
C.To control certain genes. D.To cure genetically modified mice.

Do you know that truck driving is one of the unhealthiest professions? Obesity, high blood pressure, limited physical activity, fewer than six hours of sleep per day … In a national survey, 61 percent of long-haul truck drivers have two or more of these health issues. I know what that’s like because for nearly four years, I was a truck driver for Prime Inc., one of the largest trucking companies in America.
Now I do something different: I’m the driver health and fitness coach for Prime, an unusual occupation, especially for a Yale graduate with a philosophy degree. So how did I end up here? Because I’ve never done what was expected.
When I was a kid, I went in the sport of swimming. I kept winning all those years. The culmination (巅峰) of my swimming career was at our meet against Harvard and Princeton University when I was at Yale. We ended up winning the relay and, with it, a share of the Ivy championship.
But I didn’t go all the way down the road. By nature I wanted to explore the world and find out who I was meant to be, so for the next 15 years, I traveled Europe, the Caribbean, Africa, working odd jobs. In my mid-thirties, I was tired of scraping by (勉强维持). I couldn’t imagine myself in a nine-to-five office job. A friend who was a truck driver suggested I try his line of work. Then I signed up with Prime Inc.
I’d weighed 140 pounds all my adult life, but in just two months of driving, I’d gained 15 pounds. I definitely wasn’t feeling good. In trucking, it’s all about the delivery schedule. Every second counts. How was I going to fit in working out?
There was only one fix. Anytime I had a few minutes, I worked out. Burpees (立卧撑), mountain climbers, jump-tucks … Some drivers came up to me and said, “Man, I really need to be doing this. Can you show me?” Then I realized my new routine wasn’t just for me. It meant to help other people find their way to health.
Soon I drew up a proposal and became the in-house health and fitness coach in Prime. For once, I’m doing what’s expected of me. And I’ve never felt more fulfilled.
    28. What can we know about the author?
    A. He once went to Yale to compete as an athlete.
    B. He suffered a lot before serving as a truck driver.
    C. He possessed a remarkable talent for swimming.
    D. He initially had a prejudice against truck drivers.
    29. Why did the author travel around for 15 years?
    A. He needed a sense of achievement.
    B. He wanted to stand out among peers.
    C. He decided to find out who he wanted to be.
    D. He wanted to acquire more wealth during traveling.
    30. What does the underlined part “new routine” in paragraph 6 refer to?
    A. Controlling the rapid weight gain.
    B. Making the most of time to work out.
    C. Keeping a balance between work and life.
    D. Avoiding working in a tight delivery schedule.
    31. Which of the following best describes the author?
    A. Dutiful and devoted. B. Expressive and generous.
    C. Unusual and caring. D. Ambitious and unchangeable.
    D
A robot with a sense of touch may one day feel “pain”, both its own physical pain and sympathy for the pain of its human companions. Such touchy-feely robots are still far off, but advances in robotic touch-sensing are bringing that possibility closer to reality.
Sensors set in soft, artificial skin that can detect both a gentle touch and a painful strike have been connected to a robot that can then signal emotions, Asada reported February 15 at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. This artificial “pain nervous system”, as Asada calls it, may be a small part of a machine that could ultimately experience pain. Such a feeling might also allow a robot to “sympathize” with a human companion’s suffering.
Asada, an engineer at Osaka University, and his colleagues have designed touch sensors that reliably pick up a range of touches. In a robot system named Affetto, a realistic-looking child’s head, these touch and pain signals can be converted to emotional facial expressions.
A touch-sensitive, soft material, as opposed to a rigid metal surface, allows richer interactions between a machine and the world, says neuroscientist Kingson Man of the University of Southern California. Artificial skin “allows the possibility of engagement in truly intelligent ways”.
Such a system, Asada says, might ultimately lead to robots that can recognize the pain of others, a valuable skill for robots designed to help care for people in need, the elderly, for instance.
But there is an important distinction between a robot that responds in a predictable way to a painful strike and a robot that’s able to compute an internal feeling accurately, says Damasio, a neuroscientist also at the University of Southern California. A robot with sensors that can detect touch and pain is “along the lines of having a robot, for example, that smiles when you talk to it,” Damasio says. “It’s a device for communication of the machine to a human.” While that’s an interesting development, “it’s not the same thing” as a robot designed to compute some sort of internal experience, he says.
    32. What do we know about the “pain nervous system”?
    A. It is named Affetto by scientists. B. It is a set of complicated sensors.
    C. It is able to signal different emotions. D. It combines sensors and artificial skin.
    33. What does the underlined word “converted” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
    A. Delivered. B. Transform. C. Attached. D. Adapted.
    34. What does Damasio consider as an interesting development?
    A. Robots can smile when talked to.
    B. Robots can talk to human beings.
    C. Robots can compute internal feelings
    D. Robots can detect pains and respond accordingly.
    35. What can be the best title of the text?
    A. Machines Become Emotional B. Robots May Feel Pain in The Future
    C. Human Feelings Can Be Felt D. New Devices Touch Your Heart
