It was rush hour in the morning. Heather Sant, 36, was driving her white 2012 Mazda on the road with her nine-year-old daughter and ten-year-old son in the back. Suddenly, a red pickup truck cut them off. Sant turned the wheel hard to the right, sending the Mazda slide off the road and down an embankment (路堤) that ended in a drop-off after about 50 feet. If the car didn’t stop, it would take off and dive into the road some 20 feet below. Then a bit of luck: as the car raced toward the edge, its undercarriage got stuck, stopping it suddenly.
The people inside, however, were far from safe. The car had come to rest on top of a retaining wall (护墙), balancing on the edge of disaster. One sudden move by anyone inside could throw the car off balance and send it over. Jacob Rodriguez watched everything in terror from the nearby truck company where he works. As an experienced sailor, just like every time he met shipwreck, he whispered a sailing saying “Ship, shipmates, self”, then immediately he and four other men ran to the car. They leaped onto the trunk to balance the weight as the terrified kids in the back seat watched.
Meanwhile, Julio and his nephew Marco, were driving to their jobs at nearby Premier Automotive. Julio jumped out of the car to help while Marco went to the shop, grabbed a strong rope, and returned to the car. He tied the Mazda to an F-350 truck that had been driven over by one of the other rescuers. With the car secured, the group carefully opened the back doors and helped the children out. But their departure shifted the cars weight, causing it to tip forward. The men, still on the trunk, begged Sant to jump into the back seat. She did and then inched out of the back door. Finally, the men carefully got off the trunk. Everyone was safe.
“Another foot,” Rodriguez told USA Today, “and this would be a different story.”
    24. What most probably caused the traffic accident?
    A. The Mazda was overloaded. B. Sant was really speeding.
    C. The wheel failed to work. D. The pickup cut in abruptly.
    25. Why did the men ask Sant to move to the back seat?
    A. To keep the balance of the car. B. To fasten the rope to the truck.
    C. To open the back door of the car. D. To help the men get off the trunk.
    26. What does Rodriguez want to stress in the last paragraph?
    A. The timely help offered by rescuers. B. The excellent cooperation of all the people.
    C. The serious danger the rescuers faced. D. The dangerous position where the car stopped.
    27. Which of the following statements is consistent with the theme of the passage?
    A. Persistence will pay off. B. Doing is better than saying.
    C. One in trouble, all to help. D. Many hands make light work.
    C
Today, we visit one of the most famous parks-Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve. This huge park in the southeastern part of the state covers more than 10 thousand square kilometers of the Alaskan wilderness. It includes mountains, glaciers, fjords(峡湾),and even rain forests. Glacier Bay supports hundreds of kinds of animals, including many species of birds, fish, bears, whales and sea lions.
As its name suggests much of Glacier Bay is covered by glaciers. A glacier is a large area of ice that moves slowly down a slope or valley, or over a wide area of land. Glaciers cover a large area of the park.
The glaciers found in the park today are what remain from an ice development known as the Little Ice Age. That period began about 4,000 years ago. During the Little Ice Age, the cold weather caused the ice to grow and develop. That growth continued until the 1700s, when the climate began to warm. The hotter temperatures caused the ice to start melting(融化). That melting led the huge glacier to divide into more than 1,000 different glaciers.
The extremely tall mountains seen in Glacier Bay were formed by the ice developing and then melting over time. The melting of the ice also created water that filled in and created many fjords within the park. Fjords are narrow parts of the ocean that sit between cliffs or mountains.
Glacier Bay is a popular place for people searching for adventure. Some visitors choose to explore the park by kayak. The small, narrow boats offer visitors a chance to experience park's many fjords and its hundreds of kilometers of coastline.
    28. What will you find if you pay a visit to Glacier Bay?
    A. It almost covers the whole Alaskan wilderness.
    B. The rain forests are rare in such conditions.
    C. There live a number of kinds of animals.
    D. There are more birds than other species.
    29. What can we learn from the third paragraph?
    A. Some glaciers existed there long long ago.
    B. Greenhouse effect has affected the glaciers.
    C. The glaciers will disappear in the soon future.
    D. Only 1,000 large glaciers are left at present.
    30. What do you know about fjords mentioned in the passage?
    A. They are formed on the top of mountains.
    B. The melting of the ice is also called fjords.
    C. Water is the source of creating many fjords.
    D. Fjords move as the oceans flow around.
    31. What is the writer's purpose of writing the passage?
    A. To make an advertisement for Glacier Bay.
    B. To warn visitors there are too many dangers.
    C. To show Glacier Bay has a long history.
    D. To introduce Glacier Bay to readers.
    D
The British has obeyed the “keep to the left” rule for long. Have you ever wondered why? There is a historical reason for this: it’s all to do with keeping your sword hand free! In the Middle Ages you never knew who you were going to meet when travelling on horseback. Most people are right-handed, so if a stranger passed by on the right of you, your right hand would be free to use your sword if required.
Indeed the “keep to the left” rule goes back even further in time; archaeologists have discovered evidence suggesting that the Romans drove carts and wagons on the left, and it is known that Roman soldiers always marched on the left. This “rule of the road” was officially sanctioned in 1300 AD when Pope (教皇) Boniface Ⅷ declared that all pilgrims (朝圣者) travelling to Rome should keep to the left.
This continued until the late 1700s when large wagons became popular for transporting goods. These wagons were drawn by several pairs of horses and had no driver’s seat. Instead, in order to control the horses, the driver sat on the horse at the back left, thus keeping his whip hand free. Sitting on the left however made it difficult to judge the traffic coming the other way, as anyone who has driven a left-hand drive car along the winding lanes of Britain will agree!
In Britain there wasn’t much call tor these massive wagons and the smaller British vehicles had seats for the driver to sit on behind the horses. As most people are right-handed, the driver would sit to the right of the seat so his whip hand was free. Traffic congestion in 18th century London led to a law being passed to make all traffic on London Bridge keep to the left in order to reduce collisions. This rule was incorporated (并入) into the Highway Act of 1835 and was adopted throughout the British Empire.
    32. What probably happened in the Middle Ages?
    A. Passers-by walked on the right. B. Strangers fought every time they met.
    C. People would be attacked by strangers. D. Tourists travelled everywhere without limit.
    33. What does the underlined word “sanctioned” in Paragraph 2 mean?
    A. Recognized. B. Designed. C. Explained. D. Postponed.
    34. What was the attitude of drivers in the late 18th century to driving on the left?
    A. Unclear. B. Indifferent. C. Negative. D. Doubtful.
    35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
    A. What Is the “Keep to the Left” Rule?
    B. Why Do the British Drive on the Left?
    C. Where Was “Drive on the Left” Carried Out?
    D. When Is the “Keep to the Left” Rule Popular?

Fall is our favourite hiking season. It's not too hot. The bugs are gone. Solitude(无人居住的地方)is easier to find. But fall hiking has its own complications, especially when it comes to weather. 36
Protect your feet. Watch your feet, and they'll take you around the world. 37 A pair of soft or high--quality shoes will offer great comfort, without a big "breaking in" process. They dry fast, and aren't tough on the wallet. If you're going for longer treks (跋涉), then you'll want footwear that offers support, comfort, weather resistance, and durability.
Backpacks. 38 Size. For a short hike,a day pack is best. It's light, practical, and big enough to carry the essentials (you've been looking for something between 15 and 35 L).For longer hikes, look for a pack between 30-50 L with an integrated frame (to prevent the bag from putting too much pressure on your back and shoulders).
Stay hydrated (含水的).Yes,the heatwaves of summer are probably gone for the year, but packing enough water is vital in any season. 39 For longer treks, consider a hydration reservoir, which can carry anywhere from 0.5 to 10 L. No need to search in your pack for your water bottle;just enjoy a sip from the handy tube.
40 Changeable fall can transform a sunny morning into a wet, cold afternoon. After a forest hike, the wind on the top of the observation post can bite. Dress in layers. If it's warm, you can take a layer off to prevent sweating. If it's cool, you can add a layer back on. Softshells are easily packable and light. They keep wind and water off,and are easy to take on and off as needed. Dressing for your trek?Check the forecast before hitting the trails.
    A. Keep warm and dry.
    B. For shorter hikes, this might just mean filling up your favourite water bottle.
    C. Just going short distances?
    D. Like only cheap shoes?
    E. Having enough water will keep you energetic.
    F. Before heading out, check out this handy fall hiking checklist.
    G. Number one criterion?

Lisa woke up on Saturday morning very excited. Today she was turning 10. She thought her mother would make her a special breakfast. Last year on her birthday, Lisa woke up to the smell of pancakes and sausage cooking. The kitchen table was full of fresh fruit and juice, and her family had even bought lots of fresh flowers to put on the table.
But when she went downstairs this morning, her father, mother and brother were eating cereal (麦片) at the table, just like any other day. No one even said “Happy birthday.”
When the phone rang and her mother announced that Lisa’s aunt wanted to speak with her, she knew that it must be to wish her the best on her 10th birthday. But to Lisa’s surprise, her aunt simply wanted to remind her to pick up her mail the next week while her aunt was out of town.
Lisa was quite confused. She thought that her family would say something about her special day, but she didn’t want to seem upset. She tried to be cheerful. After all, she was looking forward to meeting her friends in the park soon. Surely they were going to be excited about her birthday.
When Lisa arrived at the park, her friend Jane was the first to greet her. “Nice day, isn’t it, Lisa?” she asked.
Lisa, ready for her friend to wish her a happy birthday, responded excitedly, “Yes, it is! It’s a great day. You know why?”
“Because it’s Saturday and the weather is great!” Jane replied.
Lisa nodded, but looked down in disappointment.
Soon the rest of her friends arrived, and they all had a good time playing soccer and spending time together. But Lisa couldn’t help but think that it was strange that none of them had mentioned her birthday.
As she walked home in the late afternoon sun, Lisa tried her best not to cry. How could everyone forget her birthday? She was close to tears by the time she reached her home.

    第二节(满分25分)
On stepping in, Lisa was quite surprised. The living room was beautifully decorated, yet nobody was in sight. Before Lisa realized it, an excited shout came, “A surprise”. People crowded from behind the door, sofa and cupboard. Lisa saw her mother, father, brother, aunt, Jane and other friends she just said goodbye to standing around her, all laughing. “They all remember my birthday!” thought Lisa. Instantly, she felt her eyes a little wet. On the table lay a lovely birthday cake and her aunt was signaling all to gather around.
When the birthday candles were lit, the warmest moment came. Everyone sent best wishes to Lisa heartily and gifts began to pile up in her arms. Then came the birthday song sung gently together. In the soft candlelight, every smiling face was so touching. Looking around, Lisa felt a strong feeling arise, and that was happiness. “ How happy I am!
