I started using a wheelchair(轮椅)when I was a little kid. In primary school, I never felt different or alone. I did many activities. I even danced in my wheelchair and won prizes. However, in my heart I still hoped that I could walk like other kids.
One day my parents told me that an operation(手术)might help make my dream come true. When I went into the operating room, I was hopeful. I closed my eyes, and the world changed around me. When Ashlee Smith was six, her family had a house fire. Ashlee lost her favorite things — her toys. Ashlee’s dad is a firefighter, so Ashlee saw the same sad thing happen to other kids as well. In 2007, after her dad fought a serious fire, Ashlee decided to help kids who lost everything in fires. She wanted to bring back toys and hope for these kids. That was the beginning of the project Ashlee’s Toy Closet.
Since then, with the help of family, friends and local business(商业)people, Ashlee has collected and handed out more than 10,000 toys. They were from the neighbourhood(居住区)or warm-hearted people. The toys were mainly given to young children in the neighbourhood who lost their homes. Ashlee also went on a local radio show to ask people to mail her the toys they didn’t want.
After learning her story, more and more people offered to help. A local store manager was so moved and decided to offer some toys for free. One day, while on vacation at Walt Disney World with her family, Ashlee received an exciting call. A local church finally agreed to provide her with a big storeroom to store her toys. With more and more help, Ashlee got so many toys that she didn’t have a room big enough to keep them in. That’s why she asked the church for help.
Ashlee’s Toy Closet now helps kids all over her country. Small things can make a difference. Being a hero doesn’t mean you have to do something great or impossible. Do what you can do for others, and even a little girl can be a great hero.
