For years, it felt like the social media landscape didn’t change much. CNN broke down some of the biggest and buzziest(活跃的)social media platforms — how they work, who they’re for and who runs them.
Facebook … when you’re looking for community (or used furniture)
With more than 2 billion daily users around the world, it’s tricky to describe the stereotypical(典型的)Facebook user. Some come for Facebook Marketplace, which lets users buy and sell everything from vintage furniture to used cars. Many others come looking for community — whether that’s photo updates from their great aunt’s bridge night, or online groups dedicated to new parents or people navigating health challenges. But some of those communities have created serious issues, including groups that have spread vaccine misinformation or those that used the platform to help organize the January 6, 2021, US Capitol attack.
Instagram … when you’re looking to feel envious
What started as a photo-sharing app for friends has changed into a place where the goal is apparently to try to make yourself look more fun and more well-traveled than everyone else. Whether you’re looking at “lifestyle” tips from influencers, sponsored fashion or photos from your high school crush’s summer Italy trip — it’s all there. That culture can make the platform fun and inspirational, but it’s also raised concerns about the app’s impact on users’ mental health, especially for young girls.
TikTok … when you’re looking for entertainment
TikTok is no longer just an app for dancing teens, but many people still scroll (and scroll, and scroll) the short-form video app when they’re looking to be entertained. The platform serves up zippy videos on everything from news and book recommendations to comedy and “get ready with me” style makeup tutorials(辅导), and sometimes content about conspiracy(阴谋)theories.
YouTube… when you’re looking for something to watch
The original video-based social network. YouTube has in recent years worked to crack down on various forms of misinformation. The platform is now trying to take on TikTok with its “YouTube Shorts” short video feature.
21.If you are to buy second-hand products, you’d better use _____.
A. TikTok B. Facebook C. YouTube D. Instagram
22. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Instagram is targeted at girls .
B. TikTok mainly focuses on dance.
C. YouTube has taken action to cope with misinformation.
D. Few people are using Facebook.
23.Which saying best describes these platforms?
A.Every coin has two sides.
B.A fall into the pit, a gain in your wit.
C.Four eyes see more than two.
D.Drop by drop the oceans are filled.
B
When I was at school, I hated art. Growing up in north Wales, I was not able to rate higher than an E in my final exams. I wasn’t too upset. I thought I wasn’t going to choose it as a career.
By the time I was about four, I started sleepwalking. At night, I used to go under the stairs and scribble (乱画) on the wall. When I was 15, I was no longer just making scribbles. I was drawing anything from pictures of Marilyn Monroe to unrealistic paintings. I showed some to my art teachers. They said: “Why can’t you do this in class?” It was something I struggled to understand myself. I tried so hard to draw when I was awake, practising and using the same tools. But no matter what I did, I was unable to recreate the drawings.
Once I left school, I became a nurse, mainly helping people with brain injuries. I also met my partner. He is unbelievably supportive of my art and sleepwalking habits—he often films me as I work. And when I begin to paint in my sleep, I’ll use any tools I can find, sometimes knives and forks. That’s the only thing that worries my partner—that I’ll accidentally hurt myself. I have gone to various sleep clinics to try to get to the bottom of what’s happening, but nothing out of the ordinary was found health-wise. Alcohol or lack of sleep does bring the sleepwalking on more, though, so I am careful about that.
I have learned to hug my unusual talent and set up my first art exhibition in 2007 at my local in library to raise money for cancer research. Within a week, I had 160 calls from different media outlets and organizations wanting to hear about my art. I was over the moon. I then decided to leave my very fulfilling job in nursing and become a full-time artist.
24.Why wasn’t the author upset about her art final exams?
A.She got used to her E in art. B.She had little interest in her study.
C.She was confident in herself. D.She was unwilling to work in art field.
25.What did art teachers think of the author’s sleepwalking paintings?
A.They felt worried about them. B.They expressed doubt about them.
C.They were indifferent about them. D.They showed confidence about them.
26.What does the underlined phrase “over the moon” probably mean in last paragraph?
A.Extremely pleased. B.Really concerned.
C.Highly annoyed. D.Greatly shocked.
27.What can we infer about the author from the text?
A.She always enjoys painting. B.She is often injured by sleepwalking.
C.She has no trouble in sleepwalking now. D.She makes full use of her sleepwalking talent.

We talk to the Perfect Planet experts about their experiences, hopes and advice.
We caught up with Dr Asha de Vos (Marine Biologist) and Dr Niall McCann (Biologist), who provided their expertise to the A Perfect Planet series. They have both witnessed, first-hand, the myriad(无数的)ways that humans have upset the delicate balance of our planet’s ecosystems.
Asha is a world-renowned marine(海洋的) biologist, TED Senior Fellow and ocean educator. She’s a pioneer in the research of blue whales and an expert on the current state of our oceans. Niall is a biologist, explorer and conservationist(环境保护主义者). He’s conducted remote-area biological research all over the world, and is a jungle expert, as well as a specialist in endangered species research. We discussed their hopes for the future, and what they want the audience to take away from the programme.
Seeing the damage caused by climate change can be a very bleak experience, but that hasn’t dampened Niall’s outlook. “I feel very positive about the future,” he explains, “because I spend so much time talking with young people - our future leaders - about nature, the environment, and humankind’s place in the world. The ‘Greta generation’ care deeply about the environment and are rightly holding those in power to account for their poor stewardship(管理) of the planet.”
Asha shares Niall’s view. When it comes to what practical steps viewers can take to tackle climate change, both experts have ideas.
“There are lots of little things we can all do to take care of our planet,” says Asha. “My favourite is a little unorthodox(非正统的). I ask people to share the stories of our planet, and specifically our ocean. Oftentimes, inaction or negative action comes from a place of ignorance, so empowering more people with the stories of our ocean and our incredible planet will help us to drive change. After all, if 70% of our planet is ocean, shouldn’t we have at least 50% of the world working for it?”
28.The underlined phrase in the second paragraph probably means ________.
A. interviewed B.recorded C.waited for D.noticed
29. What can you know about Asha and Niall from Paragraph3?
A. Asha is the first one in research of blue whales.
B. Asha is a well-known jungle expert.
C. Niall is an ocean educator and conservationist.
D. Niall is an expert in endangered species research.
30. What is Niall’s attitude towards environment?
A. optimistic B.negative C.uncaring D.doubtful
31. What is the possible reason of people’s negative action?
A. Their laziness. B. Their optimism. C. Their ignorance. D. Their poverty.
D
A growing number of experts believe language can influence how we think just as our thoughts and culture can shape how language develops. One instance is that language appears to have a fascinating effect on the way we think about time.
Scientists who believe in this have shown that English speakers typically view time as travelling from left to right, most likely in line with the way the English language is written. However, Hebrew speakers, who read and write from right to left picture time as following the same path as their text.
Languages also encode(编码) time in grammar. In English for example, the future is one of three simple tenses, along with the past and the present—we say “it rained”, “it rains and “it will rain”. But in German, you can say Morgen regnet, meaning “it rains tomorrow” The same is true for many other languages including Chinese.
But does this affect how we think? Keith Chen set out to test whether people who speak “futureless” languages might feel closer to the future than those speaking other languages. He discovered that speakers of futureless languages were more likely to engage in future focused activities. They were 31% more likely to have put money into savings and collected 39% more wealth by retirement. They were also 24% less likely to smoke, 29% more likely to be physically active, and 13% less likely to be medically obese(肥胖的). This result held even when controlling for factors such as socioeconomic status and religion. In fact, countries with futureless languages on average 5% more of their GDP per year.
It is becoming increasingly clear that language is influencing how we think about the world and our passage through it. This is not to say that any one language is “better” than another, but being aware of how languages differ helps you think and communicate better. And while learning a new language won’t necessarily make you a genius we can all gain a fresh viewpoint and more flexible understanding of the world through it.
32.What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.A comparison of different writing styles.
B.A significant study on the direction of time.
C.The special reading habit of Hebrew speakers.
D.The effect of writing systems on views of time.
33.What can we learn from Keith Chen’s experiment?
A.German people mostly live at present.
B.Chinese people tend to plan for the future.
C.Futureless languages bring increased profits.
D.Languages with future tenses call for change.
34.What might the author suggest people do?
A.Use foreign languages frequently.
B.Choose among languages flexibly.
C.Be careful with futureless languages.
D.Pay attention to language differences.
35.What is the best title for the text?
A.Language Reflects the Local Culture.
B.Language Affects Our Sense of Time.
C.The Benefits of Learning a New Language.
D.The Relation between language and thought.

The English phrase “it’s a small world” has been commonly used, and the recent coronation (加冕) of King Charles III and Queen Camilla in London on Saturday made me appreciate 56 (it) real meaning.
I was one of those who were viewing this once-in-a-life-time event on television. This meant that I literally had a front-row seat to a ceremony 57 has been virtually unchanged for centuries. The fact that I could sit on my sofa, many 64 (thousand) of kilometers away from those events in London on Saturday and see the coronation as it actually happened really brought this fact home to me, 65 (make) me truly appreciate that we are now really living in such a “small world”.

书面表达
Dear Peter,
It’s a pity that you quarreled with your parents. Attractive as mobile games are, they do cost you much time and energy, which does harm to your health and study. To be honest, it is our primary task to study hard now. We students should devote ourselves to our study in order to be admitted to a key university. Therefore, personally speaking, you’d better change your daily routine to spend more time on your study. More importantly, I think what your parents did is because they care about you. Calm down and think it over. How can we let them down? So it is necessary to say sorry to them.
Hope you will get on well with your parents soon.
Yours,
Li Hua
