Deep in the Amazon rainforest of Brazil, there lives one of the world’s most mysterious tribes (神秘部落). Around 700 Pirahã people speak their own language, Pirahã. Pirahã is unusual in many ways. It has, for example no words for exact numbers. When talking about the amount (数量) of something, people use three words: hόi, “a small size or amount” hoí, “a larger size or amount,”
and baágiso,“a bunch.”
So how do the Pirahã count? How do they ask for two of something instead of just one? Over the ten years, many researchers have tried to answer these questions. One of them is Caleb Everett who travelled to the Pirahã villages a few years ago to run some simple experiments. For one test, Everett placed three batteries (电池) of the same color on a table. He then asked the Pirahã to make a second line just like the first one. For another, Everett showed three batteries with different colors, and then hid them. Again, he asked for a second line just like the first one. In both tests, no mistakes were made when there were no more than three batteries. However, if the number of the batteries was above that, the Pirahã found it hard to make a second line. English speakers often find such tasks easy, except when there are too many batteries, or when the batteries are shown quickly and then hidden. The Pirahã, however, don’t count at all. In their culture, exact counting is never valued. Some researchers tried to teach the Pirahã number words but they made little progress. The Pirahã were not interested at all.
In our data-driven culture, living without numbers is unthinkable. But while we are busy dealing with different data in our daily life, the Pirahã are also living a happy life.
( )34. Which word can the Pirahã use to show a small amount of something?
A.hόi B.hoí C. Baágiso D.Bunch
( )35. In which test did the Pirahã find it hard to make a second line?
( )36.Why was there little success in teaching Pirahã number words?
A. They were too poor at understanding English
B. They found it really difficult to learn these words.
C.They showed no interest in learning number words
D. They couldn’t communicate with people from other countries
( )37. Which of the following would be the best title of the passage?
A. The Pirahã: Living Without Numbers
B. The Pirahã: Learning How to Count
C. The Pirahã: A Searcher for a Happy Life
D. The Pirahã: A Keeper of an Old Language
C
When considering the kind of experience that makes life better, most people first think that happiness depends on experiencing the simple pleasure in our daily life: tasting delicious food, sitting in front of the television, or getting a birthday gift.
Pleasure is an important part of our life, but it doesn’t bring real happiness by itself. When people think further about what makes a meaningful life, they won’t just think of pleasant memories, but begin to remember other events, other experiences that mainly belong to a group with an exact name: enjoyment.
Enjoyment always comes together with a sense of achievement (成就). Playing tennis games that improves one’s ability is enjoyable. Having a conversation that leads us to come up with new ideas is also enjoyable. None of these experiences may bring pleasure immediately when they are taking place, but when we think back on them later, we would say “That was really fun.” and wish they would happen again. After an enjoyable event, we know that we have changed, and grown.
Experiences that give pleasure can also give enjoyment, but the two feelings are quite different. For example, everybody takes pleasure in eating. However, to enjoy food is more difficult—you have to pay enough attention to a meal in order to sense and tell its various tastes. As this example suggests, we can experience pleasure without any psychic energy. A person can feel pleasure without any effort, as long as certain parts in his brain are stimulated (刺激). But it’s impossible to enjoy a tennis game or a book without full attention. It’s for this reason that pleasure does not last long, and hardly makes us grow. Growth requires full attention to goals (目标) that are new and challenging.
Without enjoyment, life will go on, and it can even be pleasant. But it depends heavily on luck and external environment. To lead a life with real happiness, however, we need to learn how to build enjoyment into what happens day in, day out.
( )38. You will most probably experience enjoyment when you________.
- have a delicious meal B. watch an interesting TV show
- receive a birthday gift D. discuss with friends for new ideas
( )39. What do you know about pleasure and enjoyment from the passage?
A Enjoyment is just the same as pleasure.
B. Enjoyment experiences usually have no pleasure.
C.Pleasure experiences always come with enjoyment.
D. Some experiences offer both pleasure and enjoyment.
( )40. The underlined phrase “psychic energy” in Paragraph 4 is the closest in meaning to_____.
A. attention B.interest C. ability D knowledge
( )41. The writer probably agrees that___________.
A. the sense of pleasure is a long-lasting feeling
B. feeling enjoyment comes with achieving growth
C. pleasure is the key to a happy and meaningful life
D.enjoyment mainly depends on luck and environment

When Candace walked into Penguin (企鹅) Research Lab of the space station, Dejario had an Emperor penguin in his hands. The Emperor penguins could live in extreme cold weather.
“What are you doing?” Candace asked.
“I’m talking to them,”answered Dejario.
Candace shook her head. “You’re trying to be a penguin whisperer (轻声耳语者) again. What a big waste of our research time. Grow up, Dejario, Penguins aren’t our pets. They’re just lab animals now.”
“The penguins listen to met” Dejario insisted.
Suddenly, the space station shuddered and the door of the lab shut automatically. Candace and Dejario were locked in the lab!
“Help! Help!” Candace shouted, but it was silent outside.
It was always cold in the lab, but now it was even colder. “The temperature is dropping about a degree a minute! At that rate, the water will become ice soon. Maybe in a few hours, we’ll die.” Candace had lived on the space station long enough to know that the possibility of dying was real.
Candace shook Dejario. “We can’t just give up. Dejario! Can’t you think of any ideas? How do the penguins live in extreme cold weather?”
“They huddle(缩成一团).”
“Just huddle? That’s all?”
“Well, the whole group of penguins get together. That way the penguins in the middle keep warm.”
“Then the ones on the edge (边缘) just die?”asked Candace.
“Oh, no! They move in toward the center, then move back out to the edge, then move in again. In this way, the whole group of penguins could keep evenly warm. This is called colloidal jamming. “
Candace shivered. “Could we join their colloidal jamming until we get help?”
“Maybe. But penguins don’t like people around them.”
“No problem,” Candace said.“You’re the Penguin Whisperer. Whispering to your penguins to let us huddle with them is the only way we’ll get out of this...alive.”
Together they moved to the edge of the group of penguins. A penguin nipped Dejario’s jacket, but he wasn’t afraid. ______▲_____ Slowly the penguins seemed to know him and allow him into their huddle.
Candace wasn’t so lucky. An especially large penguin bit her hard. Though feeling painful, Candace didn’t make a sound. Finally she and Dejario were carried on a kind of wave to the warm center of penguins.
They’d gone through the waddle four times when people finally found them and saved them. “It was -68°C here! We thought for sure you’d be dead!” someone said.
Candace looked at Dejario and said, “What’s the w-worry? The Penguin Whisperer and I were just doing the colloidal penguin jam.”
