Move over soccer, basketball and football, there’s a new competition sweeping Australia. It’s competitive bird calling. Yes, bird calling!
Scores of kids in New South Wales are spending their spare time practicing for the Bournda Bird Olympics, an event that aims at young bird-callers against each other to see who can deliver the clearest, most enthusiastic and most accurate bird call. The principal of the Bournda Environmental Education Centre, Doug Reckord, encourages the kids to listen to bird calls on YouTube to prepare for the event. The children also work on identifying birds by their beaks, claws and calls.
Surprisingly, the Bournda Bird Olympics isn’t Australia’s first competition with competitive bird calling. The first competition took place in Sydney in 1912. It was supported by the Gould League of Bird Lovers, a foundation that encouraged children to bird watch and learn about birds.
Even back then, New South Wales was the country’s bird calling leader. Students from the New South Wales region had access to much more bird sounds than city kids. They won the Dawson Memorial Shield for best bird calling six times between 1953 and 1962. Today, New South Wales is bringing back the bird calls. Led by the Bournda Environmental Education Centre, the Bournda Bird Olympics renewed in 2018. The event now features former bird calling champion, Bruce Chapman, as the “celebrity” judge.
When showtime finally arrives, three judges at the Bournda Bird Olympics rate people taking part on their enthusiasm, accuracy and clearness. The players can earn a maximum of three points in each type. Some 45 children took part in the 2022 event. The most popular bird call to imitate (模仿) was the kookaburra’s unique laugh. But the winner that year came from a girl copying a king parrot. Her call sounded so accurate that a king parrot in the trees actually called back to her.
    24. What’s Doug Reckord’s attitude to bird calling?
    A. Curious. B. Positive. C. Uncaring. D. Objective.
    25. What is Gould League of Bird Lovers?
    A. A project. B. A school club. C. A game. D. An organization.
    26. What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?
    A. The basic rules of bird calling. B. The bright future of bird calling.
    C. New South Wales’ participation. D. New South Wales’ training.
    27. Why did a girl’s imitation win the 2022 event?

Imagine, John Lennon’s most famous song was recently voted “Britain’s favourite song of all time”. It’s an idealistic song about peace and hope for a better world. ‘Imagine all the people living life in peace’. The song was a big hit in 1971 and again in 1981 Lennon was murdered in New York. It became a hit for a third time after the terrorist attacks of september 11th , 2001.
But who really wrote the song? Until recently the answer to this question was always John Lennon. But on a TV program this week, Lennon’s wife, Yoko Ono, spoke for the first time about how she in fact helped to write the song.
Ono said that the idea and inspiration (灵感) for imaging came from some of her poems that John Lennon was reading at that time. The poems began with the word ‘Imagine’. Ono said during the Second World War, my brother and I were terribly hungry. I imagined delicious menus for him and he began to smile.
In an interview just before he died, Lennon admitted that Yoko deserved credit for imaging. He said a lot of it came from her, from her book of poems. Imagine this, imagine that.
Ono said that some of the song was written when they were flying across the Atlantic, and the rest was written on the piano in their bedroom at their home in England. Ono said, “The song speaks about John’s dream for the world. It was something he really wanted to say.” Imagine became a popular song for peace activists everywhere.
In March 2002, the airport in his hometown of Liverpool was renamed John Lennon Airport. A sign above the main entrance has a line from Imagine ‘Above us only shine’.
    28. What does the author say about the song?
    A. Imagine a is closely related to Lenon’s death.
    B. It’s the most popular song in the world.
    C. It encourages listeners to use their imagination.
    D. It expresses Lennon’s wish for world peace.

Why does Haiti so tend to have fatal earthquakes? Earthquakes have been causing huge damage in Haiti since at least the 18th century. The capital city has been destroyed twice in 19 years. The 21st century has been no more kind.
The Earth’s outer shell is made tip of tectonic plates (构造板块) that move. Haiti sits near the crossing of two tectonic plaits that make up the Earth’s outer shell. Earthquakes can occur when those plates move against each other and create friction (摩擦力).
Haiti is also overpopulated. Plus, many of its buildings are designed to resist hurricanes but not earthquakes. Those buildings can survive strong winds bat are easy to fail down when the ground shrikes. Poor building practices can also play a role.
“I think it’s important to recognize that there’s no such thing as a natural disaster,” said Wendy Bohon, a geologist. “What you have is a natural disaster that comes with a weak architecture system. We do know that earthquakes like this can cause huge damage because of the fault,” said Wendy. “And it’s quite a significant risk in places that don’t have the construction practices to resist the shaking.”
Construction of more earthquake-resistant buildings remains a challenge in Haiti, which is the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere. “While there have been some success stories of Haitians building more earthquake-resistant structures, the country has lacked a centralized effort to do so,” said Mark Schuller, a professor of anthropology and nonprofit and NGO studies at Northern Illinois University. Haiti’s government has become increasingly weak, while non-governmental organizations only focus on their own projects.
“There is technical knowledge in Haiti, There are trained architects. There are city planners. That’s not the problem,” Schuller said. “The problem is a lack of funding for coordination (协调), and lack of political will from donors to organizations providing aid.”
    32. Which factor causing the huge damage is highlighted?
    A. Its overpopulation. B. Its weak government.
    C. Its geographical location. D. Its weak architecture system.
    33. What does the underlined part “the fault” in paragraph 4 refer to?
    A. Lacking political will to provide aid.
    B. Lacking hurricane-resistant; buildings.
    C. Lacking earthquake-resistant buildings.
    D. Sitting on the crossing of two tectonic plates.
    34. What’s Schuller’s attitude towards Haiti’s government?
    A. Supportive. B. Critical.
    C. Indifferent. D. Interested.
    35. Which of the following can be a problem according to the last paragraph?
    A. Fund and will. B. Skilled architects.
    C. Urban designers. D. Technology and money.
D 33. C 34. B 35. A

(此外,它的许多建筑设计用于抵御飓风,但不能抵御地震)”以及第四段“earthquakes like this can cause huge damage because of the fault,” said Wendy. “And it’s quite a significant risk in places that don’t have the construction practices to resist the shaking.”
根据画线部分上文“What you have is a natural disaster that comes with a weak architecture system. (你所遇到的自然灾害遇到了脆弱的建筑体系)”以及“earthquakes like this can cause huge damage (这样的地震会造成巨大的破坏)”以及下文“it’s quite a significant risk in places that don’t have the construction practices to resist the shaking (在那些没有建筑措施来抵御地震的地方,风险相当大)”可推知,此处指当一场自然灾难碰上一个脆弱的建筑系统,才是真的灾难。
根据文章第五段“Haiti’s government has become increasingly weak, while non-governmental organizations only focus on their own projects. (海地政府越来越弱,而非政府组织只专注于自己的项目)”可知,政府在提高建筑系统抗震方面不作为,非政府组织又各行其是。从而推知,作者对政府是持批判态度的。故选B项。
    【35题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章最后一段“The problem is a lack of funding for coordination, and lack of political will from donors to organizations providing aid. (问题在于缺乏协调资金,以及捐助者对提供援助的组织缺乏政治意愿)”可知,海地要建造抗震建筑,资金和决心可能是问题。故选A项。
Is Society Too Dependent On Technology?
Just think, what would happen if your computer, iPad or laptop crashed today? What if someone took away your phone for some days or perhaps you lost it? If thinking about these incidences makes you stressed, you are not alone. ____36____
Most of us cannot go for a minute without looking at our phones and the fear of the battery dying is huge. If you happen to work in offices you may be familiar with this trend. ____37____ Anyway, it's true. How can work continue if it's hard to send an email to a colleague or customer? This is common in almost all offices.
____38____ Those evening games after school are over; watching cartoons on a Sunday or playing with friends are no longer there. Today, most kids remain indoors playing computer games or with a smart phone. Technology has taken all their time.
Society may have gone too far in technology dependence. It has become so huge that doctors have recommended for "technology detox". ____39____ If not, according to Oxford Dictionary, Technology Detox is a period during which an individual avoids using any electronic devices including computers, smart phones, etc., as a chance to reduce stress and focus on social interaction in the outside world.
Well, the choice remains in our hands. We must agree that society is being carried away by the increased inventions being introduced in our lives today. ____40____ Meanwhile, we should have the discipline to turn it off when we are supposed to experience life in reality.
    A. Perhaps you may have heard of it.
    B. We appreciate technology since it has its benefits.
    C. If the Internet is down, all the tasks are over for the day.
    D. Technology addiction is sure to cause social problems.
    E. Today, most people are becoming dependent on technology.
    F. Here are some signs that our generation depends too much on technology.
    G. Kids used to spend a lot of time with each other or parents playing or just sharing stories.
E 37. C 38. G 39. A 40. B
E.“Today, most people are becoming dependent on technology.”(今天,大多数人开始依赖科技。)
2.根据下文“Anyway, it's true. How can work continue if it's hard to send an email to a colleague or customer? ”(不管怎样,这是真,如果很难给同事或顾客发邮件,工作怎么能继续下去?)提到了要给同事或顾客发邮件发不出去,就会使办公室工作难以进行下去。所以空白处可以论述造成这种事情发生的一个情况。选项C. “If the Internet is down, all the tasks are over for the day.”(如果网络关闭,今天所有的任务都会结束。)
3.根据下文“Today, most kids remain indoors playing computer games or with a smart phone. Technology has taken all their time.”(如今大多数孩子仍然待在家里玩电脑游戏或者玩智能手机。 G. “Kids used to spend a lot of time with each other or parents playing or just sharing stories.”(孩子们过去常常花很多时间和对方或父母一起玩,或者只是分享故事。)
4.根据前文“It has become so huge that doctors have recommended for "technology detox".”(它已经变得如此严重,以至于医生建议进行“科技排毒”。) 下文 “If not, according to Oxford Dictionary, Technology Detox is a period during which an individual avoids using any electronic devices including computers, smart phones, etc., ”(如果没有,根据牛津词典, “科技排毒”指的是一个人避免使用任何电子设备,包括电脑、智能手机等,)给出了词典上对 “科技排毒”的解释,所以空白处应该说明这个名称我们可能听说过。选项A.“Perhaps you may have heard of it.”(也许你可能听说过。)
5.根据前文“We must agree that society is being carried away by the increased inventions being introduced in our lives today.”(我们必须承认,社会正被日益增多的发明带入我们今天的生活。)后文“Meanwhile, we should have the discipline to turn it off when we are supposed to experience life in reality.”(同时,当我们应该在现实生活中体验生活时,我们应该有关闭它的纪律。) B.“We appreciate technology since it has its benefits.”(我们欣赏技术,因为它有它的好处。)

Recently, there has been an increasing concern about the phenomenon that high school students are lacking enough sleep. Many of them stay up late for various reasons, ranging from heavy schoolwork to being addicted to digital devices.
The importance of a good sleep can never be emphasized too much. It can help us stay focused in class, and furthermore, serves as a basic foundation for good health. On the contrary, the long-term shortage of sleep not only robs us of energy needed for study in the daytime, but also gives rise to many potential physical and mental diseases.
Therefore, it is suggested that we should work out an efficient plan for our school life, striking a balance between work and study. Only by keeping a healthy life-style can we have a strong body to deal with future challenges.

Nick was new, so he didn’t have many friends. One day when he sat by himself at lunch, the headmaster walked in and announced that it was the basketball season, so they needed to practice after school till 6. Nick smiled. He loved playing basketball.
Later that day it was time to go to the first practice of the season. There were other guys and they all sat together talking, but Nick just sat there and waited. “Alright boys! Line up and tell me your names,” the coach demanded. “Ricky, Derick, Josh, Dan, Nick.” they answered, one after another. Practice went on and the coach began to try out the boys. Ricky and his friends did really good. But the coach ran out of time before he could try out Nick.
The next day, Ricky and his friends came up to Nick and told him he wasn’t good enough though they had never seen him play. Nick said nothing. Soon enough it was time for Nick to try out. “We will start with free throws,” the coach said. Nick stood on the free throw line and then shot. He didn’t miss one shot. The boys were amazed. Ricky was mad because they were all giving the attention to Nick. The coach informed Nick that he made the team. All the boys were congratulating him.
Nick was happy that he was on the team and it was a good way to make friends. Ricky just stood there and looked at him in anger. Ricky always got the attention but now Nick did because he’s an amazing player. The next day came and Nick went to lunch. He sat by himself and the next thing he knew was that the table he was sitting at was filled with all the basketball players except Ricky.
Soon enough it was time for their first game. The game was a close one ... There were 5 seconds left and Ricky had the ball. Everyone was blocked but Nick was open. “I'm open. I’m open,” Nick said over and over.
    注意:
    1. 续写词数应为150左右;
    2. 请按如下格式作答。
Ricky saw that he was open but he didn’ t care.
    ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Nick decided to talk to Ricky after they failed the game.
    _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Version 1:
Ricky saw that he was open but he didn’t care. Ricky went to try and shoot, but missed. Their team lost by one point. Nick was right by the basket but Ricky didn’t pass the ball because he didn’t like Nick. As soon as the game was over, the coach waited for them all to get into the locker room and said sadly, “There was no reason we should lose. We were one point behind. Ricky could have made it but he decided to shoot himself. I’m so disappointed.”
Nick decided to talk to Ricky after they failed the game. “Only if we work together can we succeed,” Nick said seriously. Ricky regretted what he had done and realized the importance of good teamwork. Weeks went by and it was time for another game. Ricky and Nick were both in. They were working together. They caught up and ended up winning the rest of the games of the whole season. Nick and Ricky became really good friends. They can’t wait till next year to play again .
    Version 2:
Ricky saw that he was open but he didn’t care. He just wanted to show off how well he could play so that he could catch other people’s attention again. He tried his best to shoot, but to his surprise, he didn’t make it. The team lost in the end. The coach and the teammates were very disappointed with Ricky, thinking that he had no sense of teamwork. Ricky was sorry for the mistake he had made, but there was nothing he could do about it.
Nick decided to talk to Ricky after they failed the game. “Hey, Ricky, if you don’t like me, just keep off the court. But if you want to succeed, just work as a team.” In fact, Ricky had regretted not being able to work with the team. He decided to see Nick as a role model. The boys went home and had hours of practice the next day. In the following games of the whole season, they achieved great success one after another due to their unity.
