    (A)

John James Audubon was born on April 26, 1785 in Haiti. John spent much of his childhood in France where he spent many hours outdoors painting the world around him. In 1803 he moved to the United States, and found the animals in his new home were among the most beautiful in the world. He particularly enjoyed watching the birds.

John spent much of his early adulthood trying and failing at many businesses in the United States. Instead of taking care of business, John was usually off exploring in the wilderness.

At first, John spent his time hunting for food and sport, but he became more interested in the birds he found. He began studying then, trying to learn the differences between the types, and noticing their behaviour. He often sketched素描and painted the birds he was watching.

He was so sad that he couldn’t earn enough money to support his family, so he spent time improving his painting skills and began to sell his pictures. He discovered that he could earn some money by doing something he really enjoyed.

John wanted to have his collection of bird paintings published. He found no one in America who was willing to publish his works, so in 1826, John headed for London, England. He and his paintings were well-received because they helped people in London see what wildlife in faraway America looked like.

It wasn’t long before he was able to publish his masterpiece, Birds of America. Some people called his work the “Double Elephant Folio” because it was enormous! The pages were over three feet tall and aver two feet wide.

The public loved John’s books and he had finally achieved financial success. He also enjoyed fame as one of the greatest naturalists and artists of his time.

John James Audubon died on January 27, 1851. Even today, over 160 years after his death, his paintings are still praised and valued for their beauty and scientific accuracy.

    26. What is John James Audubon most famous for?

    A. Painting pictures of birds.     B. Exploring in the wilderness.

    C. Taking photographs of birds.    D. Recording birds’ behaviour.

    27. Why were Audubon’s books called “Double Elephant Folio”?

    A. The books included paintings of birds.

    B. The pages of the books were very large.

    C. The books included pictures of elephants.

    D. The pages of the books were shaped like elephants.

    28. What is the purpose of the passage?

    A. To teach readers about birds.    B. To share Audubon’s paintings.

    C. To teach readers how to earn money.   D. To introduce an artist and naturalist.

    (B)

About 30 years ago, Nissan introduced the world’s first “talking car”. Actually, it was just a recorded voice that would tell you that your door was open and would continue talking to you until you closed it. Of course, it never caught on. Only a few people knew about the car.

Times have changed and the talking car of the near future is a car that you can talk to, rather than a car that talks to you. You’ll be able to control your radio by giving voice orders. And you can get traffic reports or directions, and send or receive emails in the talking car. To do all these, you needn’t push a button at all.

This is good news for those who spend more and more of their lives in their cars. In fact, the new type of cars will be more like offices on wheels because it has computers, wireless internet and satellite radio inside. Companies are hoping that time wasted in traffic could be put to better use. If workers are able to check their emails, faxes, and meeting time on the way to work, they can spend more time at the offices doing more important tasks.

Microsoft, of course, is hoping that every one of those mobile offices will use Windows. “It’s a great goal.” says Dick Brass, VP of Microsoft’s automotive division汽车部门. “But we’d like to have one of our operating systems in every car on earth.” There are already 650 million cars in the world, and every year about 50 million new cars roll off the production lines. If Brass’ wish came true, cars could become a bigger business for Microsoft than computers.

    29. The underlined phrase “caught on” in paragraph 1 probably means ______.

    A. turned on   B. took off   C. became popular  D. was colorful

    30. Which is TRUE about the world’s first “talking car”?

    A. The talking car of the near future is a car that talks to you.

    B. It was introduced in the late 20th century.

    C. It could record voices.

    D. It could not only record but also talk itself.

    31. The radio of the new talking car can be operated by receiving ______.

    A. traffic reports  B. voice orders  C. light signals  D. electricity energy

    32. Companies may be happy with the new type of cars because ______.

    A. their workers will get to the office earlier

    B. much time will be wasted in traffic

    C. their workers will check emails, faxes and meeting time at home

    D. their workers will have more time to do more important work at the offices

    (C)

Nowadays, people often go to another country to study or to work. Many find it difficult to adapt适应, though. According to the research, up to70% of adults experience homesickness at some point in their daily life.

Almost anything Can cause homesickness-a smell, a taste, even a color can remind them of home. Mohammed Barakat sent us a message on Facebook about his longing for” the smell of rain and green “during the Sudanese rainy season. Mari Damian misses “the smell of Christmas cakes”.

“I feel a bit sad today because I’m homesick. I miss the delicious plates of spagheti意大利面with a special sauce my mother used to make. She is a great cook. But I work abroad and I have to deal with occasional偶尔的feeling, said a young man.

According to Dr. Susan Matt, who wrote a book about the subject people used to see it as a dangerous disease. The ancient Greek poem Homer’s Odyssey talked about it. But the modem term术语was created in the 17th century to describe the feelings of Swiss soldiers, who longed for their homeland while fighting elsewhere in Europe. They suffered great depression.

Modem technology can limit this feeling, allowing people to keep in touch with loved ones easily. Skype is a lifeline because it can allow grandparents far away to watch their grandchildren grow up. People should not allow homesickness to stop them living in the present. I follow advice given by Dr. Wood. I write down three new things that I’ve been grateful for every night, as well as three things I’m looking forward to most every morning.

What about you? Have you experienced homesickness? What do you miss when you are away from your home and family?

    33. Why are some people’s words mentioned in Paragraph 2?

    A. To tell us different people miss different things.

    B. To tell us many things can make us homesick.

    C. To tell us many people live a hard life in other countries.

    D. To tell us many adults experience homesickness.

    A. Homesickness.       B. Message on Facebook.

    35. Paragraph 3 tells us that ______.

    A. homesickness is a dangerous disease

    B. homesickness made Swiss soldiers fail.

    C. Homer’s Odyssey was popular in the ancient time

    D. homesickness is not something new
