(Text 10)
M: Grandma Moses is among the most well-known 20th-century painters of the United States, yet she had hardly started painting before she was in her late seventies. She was born on a farm in New York, one of five boys and five girls. At 12, she left home and worked as a housekeeper until she married Thomas Moses at 27. They farmed most of their lives, first in Virginia and then in New York. Grandma Moses began to paint using oils in her old age because she wanted to keep busy and pass the time. Her pictures were first sold at the local drugstore and at a market, and were soon noticed by a businessman who bought everything she painted. Three of those pictures were exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art, and in 1940, she had her first exhibition in New York. Between the 1930s and her death, she produced some 1, 600 pictures.

A
This fall, Chinese students under compulsory education (义务教育) have welcomed the double reduction policy, which helps to reduce homework and out-school training. But how do students like to spend their time after school? Let’s look at homework around the world.
New Zealand
Before high school, teachers in New Zealand test their students to learn their level and arrange different teaching tasks. The school will give out a report on each student’s reading, writing, mathematics, science, art and sports at mid-year and end-of-year.
In senior high school, students’ homework and exams greatly increase. But they can select courses according to their personal interests and future career plan.
Japan
For students in Japanese primary and secondary schools, there are two types of homework: developing their living skills and getting knowledge in the classroom. And for high school students, many need to translate one page of English into Japanese every day and read it aloud, write 200 Chinese characters and do math exercises. Some schools allow students to go to tutoring schools to help them get admitted by their favorite universities.
The Netherlands
Dutch students under the age of 10ceive very lite, if any, homework, which gives them time for daily exercise. As for middle school students, teachers never spend time teaching the textbooks, and generally guide students to discuss related topics. “Besides learning, the most important task for middle school students is to have a clearer understanding of their abilities and interests, improve their social skills and have a basic plan for their future.” said Arie Slob, Minister for Primary and Secondary Education in the Netherlands.

22.What can we infer from Arie Slob’s words?
A.Abilities are more important than interests.
B.Students should know more about themselves.
C.Teachers can not talk about textbooks in class.

In the mid-1950s, I was a bored boy student who believed that doing any more than necessary was wasted effort. One day, this approach threw me into embarrassment.
In Mrs. Totten’s eighth-grade math class at Central Avenue School in Anderson,Indiana, we were learning to add and subtract decimals
Our teacher typically assigned (布置) daily homework, which would be checked in class the following day. On most days, our grades were based on our oral answer to homework questions.
Mrs. Totten usually walked up and down the rows of desks requesting answers from student after student in the order the questions had appeared on our homework sheets. She would start either at the front or the back of the classroom and work toward the other end.
Since I was seated near the middle of about 35 students, it was easy to figure out which questions I might have to answer. This particular time, I had completed my usual two or three problems according to my calculations (计算).
However, what I failed to expect was that several students were absent. As Mrs. Totten made her way from the beginning of the class, I tried my best to think of and decide which math problem I would get. I tried to work it out before she got to me. but my brain couldn’t function at that moment.
When Mrs. Totten reached my desk, she asked what answer I’d got for problem No.14. “I...I didn’t get anything,” I answered, and my face burned with shame.
I thought a lot after class that day. Till now, I still remember what happened in that math class. If I could choose one school day that taught me the most, it would be that one.
24.Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?
A.The author thought making an effort was important.
B.Mrs. Totten asked students to grade their homework themselves.
C.The author thought doing the necessary was enough.
D.The students were asked to answer homework questions together.
25.The author could work out which questions to answer since the teacher always ________.
A.requested her students to finish their usual questions
B.walked up and down when asking questions
C.chose two or three questions for the students
D.asked questions in a way that the author was familiar with
26.The author failed to get the questions he had expected because________.
A.several students didn’t come to school
B.the class didn’t begin as usual
C.Mrs. Totten didn’t start from the back of the class
D.he suffered from a serious disease
27.Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A.A Creative Student B.An Unforgettable Teacher
C.A Valuable Lesson D.An Effective Approach
24.C 25.D 26.A 27.C
根据第一段第一句“In the mid-1950s, I was a bored boy student who believed that doing any more than necessary was wasted effort. (在20世纪50年代中期,我还是一个无聊的男生,认为做任何不必要的事情都是白费力气。)”可知,作者当年认为做必要的事就足够了。故选C项。
25.细节理解题。由第四段中的“Mrs. Totten usually walked up and down the rows of desks requesting answers from student after student in the order the questions had appeared on our homework sheets. (托顿夫人经常在一排排的课桌前走来走去,按照作业纸上的问题出现的顺序一个接一个地要求学生回答问题。)”和第五段中的“Since I was seated near the middle of about 35 students, it was easy to figure out which questions I might have to answer. (因为我坐在大约35个学生中间,所以很容易弄清楚我可能要回答哪些问题。)”可知,因为老师总是有规律的提问,坐在中间位置的作者已经摸清老师的提问规律,提前确定自己要回答作业纸上的哪些问题。因为老师总是用自己熟悉的方式提问,所以作者可以想出该回答哪些问题。故选D项。
26.细节理解题。由第六段中的“However, what I failed to expect was that several students were absent. As Mrs. Totten made her way from the beginning of the class, I tried my best to think of and decide which math problem I would get. I tried to work it out before she got to me. but my brain couldn’t function at that moment. (然而,我没有想到的是有几个学生缺席了。当托顿夫人从这堂课开始时一路走过来,我尽我最大的努力去思考和决定我要做哪道数学题。我想在她找到我之前解决问题。但那一刻我的大脑无法运转。)”和第七段“When Mrs. Totten reached my desk, she asked what answer I’d got for problem No.14. ‘I…I didn’t get anything,’ I answered, and my face burned with shame. (托顿夫人走到我的桌前,问我第14题的答案是什么。‘我……我不知道,’我回答,我的脸因羞愧而发红。)”可知,因为那天有几个学生没来上学,破坏了回答问题的顺序,作者就没有回答出问题。故选A项。
通读全文,尤其是最后一段“I thought a lot after class that day. Till now, I still remember what happened in that math class. If I could choose one school day that taught me the most, it would be that one.
C
It is difficult for a teacher to decide whether to allow students to listen to music in the classroom. Every time students need to write an essay or work on a problem, they say, “Can I put my headphones on? I think better that way.” But is that really true? Does music help concentrate?
Research offers little to back up the idea that listening to music improves concentration. In one small study, 133 students performed reading tasks while listening to either light music, hip hop, or no music at all. Students who performed the reading tasks in silence scored the highest. Music with a higher intensity (强度) like hip hop was more distracting and had a greater negative effect on task performance and concentration.
Volume (音量) plays a more important role than the type of music. The study found that the louder the music, the worse the performance in concentration. The type of music didn’t matter. Data from the study showed once again that silence was the best environment to improve concentration.
However, music has a positive effect on work performance. Studies have showed that listening to music leads to positive changes in mood, as well as creativity. In fact, in music-listening cultures, which students are certainly part of, there’s actually a change in mood when the music is taken away.
It’s hard to convince my students that music doesn’t help with their concentration. Taj, a senior told me, “I wouldn’t be able to concentrate if I were listening to music and trying to read. However, when I write, I feel like music helps me concentrate deeply. I don’t have writer’s block. It’s easy for me to put my words on paper.”
“Maybe not with reading, but when it comes to math, listening to music certainly helps,” Danela told me. “You could actually be singing along with what you’re listening to and doing well in math.”
28.What does the underlined word “distracting” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Worrying. B.Exciting. C.Interesting. D.Relaxing.
29.What can we learn from the small study?
A.Students do well in reading tasks while listening to music.
B.Music can’t improve people’s mood and creativity.
C.Different types of music lead to different performances.
D.The volume of music affects concentration.
30.What do Taj and Danela have in common?
A.They believe music doesn’t help concentrate.
B.They use music to help with their paper-writing.
C.They can’t focus on reading while listening to music.
D.They don’t listen to music while doing math problems.
31.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Should Students Listen to Music?
B.Does Music Help Concentration?
C.Is Music Related to Reading?
D.Can Music Change Mood?
28.A 29.D 30.C 31.B
根据第二段第一句“Research offers little to back up the idea that listening to music improves concentration.(研究几乎没有证据表明,听音乐能提高注意力。)”可知,本段主要讨论听音乐是否能提高注意力,结合画线单词上文和下文“Music with a higher intensity (强度) like hip hop was more distracting had a greater negative effect on task performance and concentration.(高强度的音乐,如嘻哈音乐更distracting,对任务表现和注意力有更大的负面影响。)”
根据第三段中的“The study found that the louder the music, the worse the performance in concentration.(研究发现,音乐声音越大,注意力表现越差。)”
根据倒数第二段中的“Taj, a senior told me “I wouldn’t be able to concentrate if I were listening to music and trying to read.(Taj,一个高年级学生,他告诉我,“如果我听音乐,试图阅读,我就无法集中注意力”)”和最后一段中的““Maybe not with reading, but when it comes to math, listening to music certainly helps,” Danela told me.(Danela告诉我:“听音乐也许对阅读没有好处,但是当涉及到数学时,听音乐肯定有帮助。”)”可知,Taj和Danela的共同之处在于,他们在听音乐时,无法集中精力阅读,故选C。
31.主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段“It is difficult for a teacher to decide whether to allow students to listen to music in the classroom. Every time students need to write an essay or work on a problem, they say, “Can I put my headphones on? I think better that way.” But is that really true? Does music help concentrate?(老师很难决定是否允许学生在教室里听音乐。每次学生们需要写一篇论文或者解决一个问题,他们都会说“我能戴上耳机吗?我觉得这样更好?”但这是真的吗?音乐有助于集中注意力吗?)”可知,文章主要就听音乐是否有助于集中注意力进行了讨论,所以B项“Does Music Help Concentration?(音乐有助于集中注意力吗?)”适合做文章的标题,故选B。

Thirteen years ago, the Planet Earth wildlife documentary took us all on an amazing journey. We went from deep rainforests to the bottom of the ocean. Now a new one ,Our Planet, will let us see different animals and the influence of humans on the natural world. The documentary covers 50 countries and areas. It took more than four years to produce it.
With the latest 4K video technology, the show allows people a wonderful new look at nature. "People are given a chance to better get themselves into the lives of the animals” said Fothergill, one of the show s producers.
Besides showing Earth’s beauty, the documentary also talks about the planet's climate conditions. "Our Planet is here to say,' The planet is dying, and we're killing it.’" Fothergill said. In one sad scene, hundreds of walruses(海象),half-blind when out of the water, fall down a rock and suffer a painful death on the beach below. It shows how the climate conditions have influenced their natural habitat and explains why they've been forced to find the safe place on the rocks.
But the documentary is not all about sadness. It also talks about success stories, such as the ones of tigers. These animals are saved and live happily thanks to international agreements on environmental protection.
Asking more people to take action in protecting our planet is the final goal of the new documentary. What we do in the next 20 years will decide the future of all life on Earth.
32. What's the documentary Our Planet about?
A. The relationship between the climate conditions human activities.
B. Different animals and the influence of humans on the natural world.
C. The living conditions of walruses and tigers.
D. The beauty and customs of 50 countries and areas.
33. What's the purpose of the last paragraph?
A. To explain what our goal is in the future.
B. To call for more people to protect our planet.
C. To tell us how the climate conditions influence animals.
D. To introduce international agreements on environmental protection.
34. What can we infer from the passage?
A. It took a lot of time and efforts to make the documentary.
B. The documentary is popular in many countries and areas.
C. We should have a new look at the environmental protection.
D. Our goal in the future is getting along well with animals.
35. Where is the text probably from?
A. A novel. B. A dictionary. C. A storybook. D. A newspaper.
32. B 33. B 34. A 35. D
根据第一段第三句“Now a new one, Our Planet, will let us see different animals and the influence of humans on the natural world.”
根据第一段最后两句“The documentary covers 50 countries and areas. It took more than four years to produce it.(这部纪录片涉及50个国家和地区。花费超过四年的时间来制作)”可知,制作这部纪录片花费了很多时间和努力。故选A项。
通读全文,并结合第一段中“Now a new one, Our Planet, will let us see different animals and the influence of humans on the natural world.(如今另外一部纪录片,《我们的星球》,会让我们看到不同的动物及人类对自然世界产生的影响)”可知,本文主要介绍了一部关于动物和人类与自然关系的纪录片,可能来自报纸。故选D项。

Dear Jim,
Having learned that you'll be a senior high school student, I am delighted. In your last email you mentioned that you were confused about how to study well in your senior high school. Now, I'd like to share my study tips with you.
First, you'd better communicate with your teachers regularly. In this way, they may offer some great advice on both your study and life. Second, why not involve yourself in each class actively(上课积极参与讨论), listen to the teacher attentively and take notes carefully so that you can review later? Third, it's a good idea to do your homework on time soon after school, which will help you practice what you have learned and make it fresh in your mind.
I sincerely hope my advice can be helpful to you and that you can enjoy your new school life. Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua
As a sixth grader, I began noticing how other kids were separating into different groups in the class. There were the geeks, the jocks (小丑) , and the popular cool kids. I wasn’t sure where I belonged. And I think that was a problem.
Our teacher had assigned “secret friends” for the coming week. The purpose of this assignment was to do nice things for your friend without letting them know who was doing it. We could leave encouraging notes on their desk or mysteriously leave a card in their backpack or book. Our teacher wrote each kid’s name on a piece of paper and threw them into a bucket, then we each closed our eyes and drew the name of the classmate who we were to secretly befriend and support over the next five school days.
Everyone was excited to get involved, including Rochelle. By the middle of the week, we had turned this assignment into a contest to see whose secret friend could leave the best gift. Instead of encouraging notes, we left stationary sets on our friend’s desk. Instead of giving compliments, we were giving bubble gum, lollipops and even money. It seemed that everyone was getting cool presents from their friends. Everyone except me, that is.
My secret friend followed our teacher’s directions without a fault. I received handmade cards, notes with nice thoughts and countless smiley face pictures saying that I was one of the nicest girls in the class. This friend seemed to think highly of me from the notes that were left, but the lack of gifts kept me wondering what was up with whoever had pulled my name.
On the last morning of our assignment, I walked into my classroom and noticed a package on my desk. At last, my secret friend had grasped the idea that a gift was what I really needed. I quickly ripped open the gift paper, only to find a small doll inside. The pink wool-knit doll seemed not new but delicate. But the girls sitting near me giggled and gossiped about the “little girl” gift I had received.

Hearing this, I felt my face turn red. Embarrassed and ashamed, I secretly complained that the girl gave me so stupid a gift to arouse others’ derision. I even joined other girls in gossiping about my secret friend and the poor doll. When I continued with mean remarks, a girl sitting at the last row arose and came up, casting me an angry and disappointed look. With tears streaming down her face, she admitted, “I’m your secret friend and I’m sorry about the gift.” Then she ran out of the classroom. Frozen with shock, I couldn’t utter a single word.
It turned out that my secret friend was Rochelle, coming from a poor family. She had saved every penny in her pocket money in order to give me a cool gift. With the limited money, she visited a lot of stores and finally selected the lovely doll from a second-hand store. Actually, she gave me a most valuable gift with her sincere heart. However, I didn’t treasure and hurt her badly in such a cruel way. So ashamed was I that it took me a few days to pluck up my courage to face up to Rochelle and apologize. Much to my delight, she forgave me and later we became best friends. Most importantly, we found where we belonged.
