Sometimes she knitted (编织) hats for babies, and at other times, she cooked chicken soup for sick neighbors. Therefore, I wasn’t surprised when one evening my mother announced she had undertaken a new project.“I am going to telephone seniors,” said my mother. “Every night? But you don’t even know these people.” “It doesn’t matter,” she said. “What’s important is that I listen.” I was sixteen years old and couldn’t understand why my mother was willing to spend her evenings talking to strangers. She had friends and my two older sisters to call if she felt lonely. “They will talk your ear off. Some people didn’t even stop to catch breath,” I said.My attitude didn’t stop my mother’s enthusiasm for the project. That evening, she settled on the sofa and dialed. For a while, I listened as she asked the woman on the other line about her day and what she had eaten for dinner. When she finished the call, I said, “Why do you care whether she had cookies or rice pudding for dessert?” My mother grasped one of my hands and gave it a slight squeeze. “I’m the only person she talked to today.”It took me more than thirty years to fully understand the meaning of that statement. Now, as my mother is nearing eighty, I find myself thinking about those nightly calls she used to make. I am often the only person who telephones my mother, and sometimes I’m the only person she speaks to all day. I ask her what she cooked for dinner, but mostly I just listen as she describes a walk she took, or how her dog Lucky stole foods from the refrigerator. I realize that my mother’s calls were life lines that ensured housebound seniors remained connected to the world. Without her, their world would have been empty.24. What is the mother’s purpose of calling the seniors?A. To care about their life. B. To know what they eat for dinner.C. To make them feel less lonely. D. To teach them how to make desserts.25. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 probably mean?A. They will talk all the time on the phone.B. They will blame others’ wrong doings.C. They will be tired of listening to others.D. They will make you feel really satisfied.26. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?A. The author started to telephone seniors as her mother.B. The author realized the value of her mother’s efforts.C. The author’s mother preferred to live alone.D. The author’s mother remained connected to the world.27. What is the suitable title for the passage?A. Call your parents often B. Mother’s eveningsC. Mother’s new project D. Nightly calls, lifeline callsCA popular saying goes, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” However, that’s not really true. Words have the power to build us up or tear us down. It doesn’t matter if the words come from someone else or ourselves — the positive and negative effects are just as lasting. We all talk to ourselves sometimes. We’re usually too ashamed to admit it, though. In fact, we really shouldn’t be because more and more experts believe talking to ourselves out loud is a healthy habit. This “self-talk” helps us motivate ourselves, remember things, solve problems, and calm ourselves down. Be aware, though, that as much as 77% of self-talk tends to be negative. So in order to stay positive, we should only speak words of encouragement to ourselves. We should also be quick to give ourselves a pat on the back. The next time you finish a project, do well in a test, or finally clean your room, join me in saying “Good job!”Often, words come out of our mouths without us thinking about the effect they will have. But we should be aware that our words cause certain responses in others. For example, when returning an item to a store, we might use warm, friendly language during the exchange. And the clerk will probably answer in a similar manner. Or harsh (刻薄的) and critical language will most likely cause the clerk to be defensive.Words have power because of their lasting effect. Many of us regret something we once said. And we remember unkind words said to us! Before speaking, we should always ask ourselves: Is it loving? Is it needed? If what we want to say doesn’t pass this test, then it’s better left unsaid.Words possess power: both positive and negative. Those around us receive encouragement when we speak positively. We can offer hope, build self-esteem (自尊) and motivate others to do their best. Negative words destroy all those things. Will we use our words to hurt or to heal? The choice is ours.28. What is the main idea of the first paragraph?A. Words have a great effect on usB. Encouraging words give us confidenceC. Negative words may let us downD. Not sticks and stones but words will hurt us29. Why there is no need for us to feel ashamed when we talk to ourselves?A. Almost everybody has the habit of talking to themselves.B. Talking to ourselves can have positive effect on us.C. Talking to ourselves always gives us courage.D. It does no harm to have “self-talk” when we are alone.30. What does the underlined sentence mean?A. Make ourselves relaxed. B. Remind ourselvesC. Praise ourselves. D. Give ourselves happiness31. What can we learn from the text?A. Encouraging words are sure to lead to kind offers.B. Negative words may inspire us to make more progress.C. It is better to think twice before talking to others.D. People tend to remember friendly words.DIt is quite clear to me, based on my research, that tropical (热带的) insects rather than polar bears could be among the first species to become extinct as a result of global warming.Insects in the tropics are already living at the limit of their temperature range and any further increases could quickly kill them off. This would be a major disaster for tropical habitats, which rely on insects for everything from pollination (授粉) to waste disposal (处理). We have found that a rise in average temperatures in the tropics of just 1 or 2 could be enough to bring about a significant and harmful effect on the survival of a wide variety of important insects. Fitness levels most likely decline (下降) quickly and there may not be much we can do about it.Many tropical species can only accept a narrow range of temperatures because the climate they experience is pretty steady throughout the year. Now our study shows that they will be harmed by rising temperatures more than species in cold climates. Unfortunately, the tropics also hold the large majority of species on the planet. We used daily and monthly global temperatures from the 50-year period between 1950 and 2000 and compared them against data showing the “fitness levels” of different species. “Fitness” was determined by indicators such as population growth rates and physical performance for different creatures. We found that even moving into the shade did not help the insects. The direct effects of climate change on the organisms (生物体) we studied appear to depend a lot more on the organisms’ flexibility than on the amount of warming in the area where they lived. As well as the danger for insects, the research confirms that there will be other consequences of global warming that could also have a serious impact on tropical regions, particularly on food crops. Our research focused only on the impact of changes in temperature, but warming also will change rainfall patterns. These changes could be more important for many tropical organisms, such as plants, but they are harder to predict.32. What does the underlined word “This” in paragraph 2 refer to?A. Global warming. B. Living in the tropics.C. Killing polar bears off. D. Insects becoming extinct.33. Why are tropical species more likely harmed by climate change?A. The fitness of crops they feed on is declining.B. They can hardly stand up to temperature changes.C. Their living environment has been greatly damaged.D. The amount of warming is not steady in the tropics.34. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?A. The significance of the research.B. The challenge facing the researchers.C. Predictions about the impacts of global warming.D. Suggestions on how to preserve tropical regions.35. What is the main purpose of this text?A. To solve a problem. B. To give practical advice.C. To report a coming event. D. To present a research result. 第二节 七选五 (5小题每小题2.5分,满分12. 5)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。You’ve finally climbed the ladder and earned your first management role. Now what?
