Later this month, Tate Britain will host its first Van Gogh exhibition since 1947. Here we've rounded up 4 of his best paintings before the show.
Potato Eaters
Potato Eaters was Van Gogh's first major work and, despite a distinct lack of colour, it was one that he was most proud of. His aim was to represent the difficulties of country life, so the farmers are painted in earthy tones with rough faces and bony hands. He was more concerned with conveying his message than achieving technical perfection in this painting.
Irises
Van Gogh finished almost 142 pieces during his stay in the Saint Remy de Provence asylum (精神病院), where he was a voluntary patient from 1889 to 1890. This piece was started shortly after he arrived there. The hospital garden provided much inspiration for the artist during his stay there. Originally, the flowers in this work were painted purple but the red pigment (色素) faded over time and has now turned blue.
Cafe Terrace at Night
Despite being painted more than 130 years ago, this cafe still exists in France and has since been renamed the Cafe Van Gogh. This artwork marks the first time Van Gogh's famous post-impressionistic star-filled sky was seen in a piece, and it was painted on the ground, in person, rather than from memory. While the artwork doesn't bear his signature, it's widely known to be Van Gogh's, as he mentioned Cafe Terrace at Night in a number of his letters.
Wheat Field With Cypresses
This piece was inspired by the view from Van Gogh's asylum window and was finished on the spot. The work was the title of three paintings that offer an insight into his stay at the hospital.' Van Gogh was 80 pleased with the summer landscape that he made three copies there one of the same size—which hangs in the National Gallery and two smaller copies which he planned to gift to his mother and sister.
21. Which painting did Vincent van Gogh take most pride in?
A. Irises. B. Potato Eaters.
C. Cafe Terrace at Night. D. Wheat Field With Cypresses.
22. What is the original color of the flowers in Irises?
A. Purple. B. Blue. C. Red. D. Yellow.
23. What do the last two paintings have in common?
A. They were the same in size. B. They had more than one copy.
C. They were signed by the artist, D. They were painted on the ground.

I am Fionn Ferreira, an Irish teenager. I am very delighted to have won $50,000 for my project. My project came about as I was constantly hearing about plastic pollution on the news. And I also see the real effects on our beaches every day. I discovered, to my shock, that at present no filtration (过滤) for microplastics takes place in any European wastewater treatment centers, so I started looking for a solution.
Seeing that there was none, I decided to investigate further, finally finding a way to use the feerofluid (铁磁流体), a liquid which sticks to the plastic allowing it to be removed using magnets(磁铁). After over 1,000 tests I have proved that my method would remove 87% or higher of microplastics.
I grew up in West Cork, Ireland. My hometown is surrounded by untouched nature. This has been my primary inspiration about how nature works. I soon discovered that science really was in everything. The fact that I lived in such a remote place meant that I had to build my own equipment and lab to conduct tests and experiments.
Inspired by scientists such as Ben Feringa and his work with organic chemistry and nanotechnology (纳米技术), I would like to study chemistry or chemical engineering when finishing my last year of secondary school. Both of these subjects will be suited to me as I really enjoy problem-solving and experiments.
One of the most valuable rewards from the science fair for me is the opportunity to present my work to a group of professional judges. Winning the prize is a great honour to me as this is an acknowledgement of my project and ideas.
Also, winning the prize will give my project more attention. There is nothing I would like to see more than my project to be used in addressing microplastics in our oceans worldwide.
24. What do we know about Fionn?
A. He lives by the sea. B. He discovered plastic pollution.
C. He works for a science fair. D. He was born in America.
25. Fionn set up the project to________.
A. Clean the beaches. B. Investigate the feerofluid.
C. Remove microplastics from water. D. Collect plastic wastes.
26. Which word can best describe Fionn?
A. Humorous. B. Honest. C. Competitive. D. Creative.
27. What is Fionn looking forward to most?
A. Getting tests and experiments conducted.
B. Having his project acknowledged by the judges.
C. Attracting more attention to his project.
D. Seeing his project applied widely in real life.

I remember that it was a fall morning when the orchestra (管弦乐队) teachers came into Miss Newell’s third-grade classroom. “You have hands for the viola (中提琴),” Miss Ciano told me. I was excited because my hands were finally good for something. I told my parents I wanted to play, and naturally, they agreed.
Since I first touched the viola, I haven’t been able to put it down. Ignoring the difficulty, I am pulled closer to it each day.
Classical music is truly my best friend. It is the trusted friend of every man, woman and child. Various feelings are expressed in classical music. I discovered that when I was eleven and played a cello concerto (大提琴协奏曲) of Bach in a competition, the first movement was joyful, but the second movement was mysterious and full of pain. From the piece, I learned that music expresses not only feelings, but also sudden mood changes. By listening to classical music, I know that someone else shares these feelings. Since I am lucky enough to be able to play classical music, I am comforted by it when I am upset. It gives me a way to escape from my problems for a short period. Classical music can express my joy, sadness and anger.
Now look back at that fall day in the third grade and think how gullible I was for believing that anyone, even music teachers, could tell whether hands were perfect for a certain instrument. I’m certain they told me I had “ viola hands” not because they were fortune-tellers (算命师), but because there was a lack of violists in our district. Classical music is one of the best things that ever happened to mankind. If you get introduced to it in the right way, it will become your friend for life.
28. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the first and second paragraphs?
A. To introduce an interesting musical class.
B. To offer the evidence of her gift for music.
C. To show the importance of proper guide.
D. To tell the power of support from parents.
29. According to the passage, in what way does classical music help the author?
A. By developing social skills. B. By improving mental health.
C. By broadening life experience. D. By building close relationship.
30. What does the underlined word “gullible” mean in the last paragraph?
A. Easily tricked. B. Firmly loved.
C. Greatly challenged. D. Secretly hidden.
31. Which could be the best title for the passage?
A. Special event, sweet memory. B. Classical music, endless friendship
C. Lifetime dream, great effort. D. Happy childhood, unforgotten experience.

A British energy supplier has apologized for the “poorly judged and unhelpful” advice sent to customers which suggested they could snuggle(依偎) up to their pets and exercise to cut back on their heating bills.
SSE,which is owned by OVO Energy, suggested 10 “simple and cost effective ways to keep warm this winter,” according to the Financial Times. Eating bowls of oatmeal, doing star jumps and cuddling(搂抱) pets were among the recommendations on the now-deleted web page.
In a statement sent to CNN Tuesday, a spokesperson for OVO Energy said, “Recently a link to a blog containing energy saving tips was sent to customers. We understand how difficuIt the situation will be for many of our customers this year.” The spokesperson added, “We are working hard to find meaningful solutions as we approach this energy crisis, and we recognize that the content of this blog was poorly judged and unhelpful. We are embarrassed and sincerely apologize.”
Some British businesses and households have seen their energy bills rise in recent months, as suppliers deal with a sharp rise in wholesale gas prices. British consumers will pay roughly 790 more to heat and light their homes this year, according to Bank of America. Wholesale European gas prices have jumped by 400% over the previous year and electricity prices have increased by 300%, the bank’s analysts said last week. The increases have been driven by cold weather, nuclear plant outages in France and reduced gas flow from Russia.
According to National Energy Action, more than 4 million UK households are facing fuel poverty—a figure which the charity believes could rise by 2 million in April when a cap(上限) on energy prices is expected to increase.
OVO Energy removed its advice after a wave of angry responses from lawmakers and campaigners(运动参与者). Following the apology, British lawmaker Darren Jones, who chairs Parliament’s business select committee, tweeted: “Good, I’m glad they apologized. I’m not sure who signed off a marketing campaign telling people to wear a jumper and eat porridge instead of turning on the heating if you can’t afford it.”
32. Why did OVO Energy apologize for its advice on the ways of keeping warm sent to customers?
A. The ways are too costly.
B. The ways are too simple.
C. The suggestions are difficult.
D. The suggestions are ineffective.
33. Which is the result of the energy crisis for British?
A. Energy bills rise too sharply in winter for most UK households.
B. All customers can afford the increasing price of coal.
C. The British government has found meaningful methods to face it.
D. The energy crisis have been driven by cold weather.
34. How did Darren Jones feel about the apology in the last paragraph?
A. Nervous. B. Angry. C. Pleased. D. Concerned.
35. Where is this passage probably from?
A. A travel brochure. B. A newspaper. C. A health magazine. D. A science fiction.

Violet and Tilly were two sisters. Tilly was so stuck with her sister that she always followed her elder sister, Violet, everywhere. For example, when Violet was painting, she would paint by her side. Every time, Violet looked at her angrily. Couldn’t she find her own thing to do? This time, it was Tilly’s first week at gymnastics, while Violet had done gymnastics for the past two years.
Violet sat on the gym floor, waiting for her turn to do somersaults (翻筋斗). She frowned at her little sister across the room. Why couldn’t Tilly always find her own thing to do? “Violet, you’re up!” called Violet’s instructor, Miss Taylor. Violet came over and pushed off with her legs and straightened her arms. She did one, two, three somersaults. Miss Taylor clapped. “Perfect!”
Violet noticed that Tilly had stepped away from the younger group to watch Violet’s somersaults. “Tilly!” called Tilly’s instructor, Miss Brooke, from across the room. Tilly didn’t seem to hear. Not until she was called three times did she run back to her group. “ Your turn to do somersaults. ” Miss Brooke put an arm around her. Tilly walked to the mat with her face turning red like a tomato. She bent down to start a somersault. When she rolled, she fell heavily on the mat. Kids laughed in surprise at the noise.
Tilly stood uncomfortably and then ran towards the restroom. She was gone from the gym, as Violet had wanted. But it didn’t feel right. After telling Miss Taylor where she was going, Violet hurried to the restroom. She found Tilly crying hard. Violet put an arm around her sister. Seeing Violet, Tilly cried even harder. Tilly sniffed “I don’t want to do gymnastics any more.” She wiped away the tears with the back of her hand. This was Violet’s chance.
