Jasmine Charbnier’s heavy drinking started in cllege. By her early thirties, she was dwning up t eight ccktails daily, several days each week. Last year she tried t quit and was surprised when she suffered frm withdrawal symptms (症状).
Unlike hard drugs, alchl is generally viewed as a less dangerus way t reduce stress, says Dhruti Patel, a specialist at the University f Miami Medicine Schl. “It’s legal, readily available, and nt s frbidden in sciety, s wmen feel less wrry drinking,” she says.
That was certainly the case fr Charbnier, a 35-year-ld CEO and blgger in Flrida. Drinking made nights ut and travel mre fun, enabling her t meet new peple and dance excitedly. Last year, she temprarily gave up alchl t lse a few punds and was hrrified by the withdrawal symptms: strng desires fr alchl, heightened anxiety, and trembling hands smetimes. “I was cmpletely shcked,” she says. “I didn’t think I had an addictin until then.”
Recent researches have cnfirmed the belief that even small amunts f wine, beer, r ccktails endanger health. Last year, the glbal nn-prfit Wrld Heart Federatin challenged the widely held idea that a daily glass f red wine is gd fr yu. Any amunt increases the risk fr heart disease and strke (中风), the grup stated.
Cmpared with men, wmen wh drink are mre susceptible t its negative effects. Experts pint ut that wmen’s bdy cmpsitin, which has mre fatty tissue and less water than men f similar weight, leads t higher bld-alchl cncentratin. Therefre, wmen wh drink will develp a greater number f medical prblems at much lwer alchl levels than men.
Federal guidelines recmmend that wmen cnsume n mre than five unces (盎司) f wine a day. But frm a health perspective, less — actually nne — is a better target, Patel says.
Reducing cnsumptin starts with replacing alchl in scial situatins. Charbnier nw rders sparkling water, r a sft drink at happy hur, which gives her a glass t hld when thers d. She tells her friends that she’s n lnger drinking.

Anirudh Sharma, then a graduate student f MIT, nticed a wall blackened by car exhaust ( 尾 气 ) during his studies n a trip t India in 2012. He saw ptential in the pllutin. S he began wrking n the idea with his clleagues and set up Graviky Labs. “Our gal is t cllect and transfrm the tiny particulate matter, knwn as PM2.5 which results frm burning fuels, int high grade inks that everyne can use and express themselves with thrugh art r writing.”
The trial and errr f attaching equipment t cars fr cllecting PM2.5 led t the inventin f KAALINK, a small device that can be fixed t exhaust pipes (排气管). This device can cllect 95 percent f PM2.5 in the exhaust withut any negative effect n engine perfrmance. Then the particulate matter is purified, grund t a standard size, and liquefied (液化) in a Graviky Labs prcess. The result is a heavily clred, free-flwing “Air-Ink,” which can be laded int ur daily used pens and printers.
The Air-Ink idea has been attracting increasing public attentin. A number f Indian cmpanies have cntacted Graviky Labs t deal with PM2.5 that therwise culd end up in a river r reach ur lungs. Singapre-based Tiger Beer partnered with Graviky Labs fr an art campaign, making Air-Ink available t artists in mre cities such as Hng Kng, Berlin and Lndn.
Since 2016, Graviky Labs has cleaned 1.6 trillin liters f air and prduced mre than 1,200 liters f Air-Ink. With mre dubts t beat and supprt t win, and mre Air-Ink available in market, Sharma and his clleague wuld be able t breathe a little easier. And s wuld we.

Nile crcdiles are uniquely sensitive t the cries f painful primate (灵长类) babies, accrding t a new study — and the mre anxius the cry, the mre interested they becme. T make the find, Niclas Grimault, a scientist at the University f Lyn, and his clleagues visited a z in Mrcc, which huses mre than 300 Nile crcdiles. The researchers set up ludspeakers alngside fur pnds where, at each, as many as 25 crcdiles sunbathed n red rcks. The speakers played a series f cries expressing varying levels f pain frm primate babies. The cries were recrded in different situatins t find
ut which aspects f the vices interest the crcs mst.
Many f the crcs, male and female, respnded t the cries by suddenly turning their heads, seeking ut the surce f the sund, rapidly appraching the ludspeaker and smetimes even biting it. One individual even shwed prtective behavir by psitining in frnt f the speaker as if t defend it frm thers. Interestingly, their respnse depended n the characteristics f the cries they heard: Crcs were mre likely t react t recrdings with acustic (声音的) features clsely related t very upset babies, such as sudden changes and disharmny in frequency, smthness and tnes.
When the researchers asked human vlunteers, all f whm had experience with human babies, t listen t the same recrded cries and estimate the level f pain, the participants used different features than the crcs did t evaluate the sunds, basing their decisins largely n the pitch f the cries — hw high r lw a sund is. But it varies amng individuals and acrss species. That makes it less reliable and accurate than the alternative acustic clues picked up n by crcdiles.
The findings f the study raise the pssibility that emtin may be cmmunicated acrss species lines in mre ways than scientists thught. As Grimault puts it, “If crcs can d it, prbably many ther animals can d it, t.”
Why are the cries cllected frm different situatins played?
T discver which crcdiles are smart.
T identify what appeals t crcdiles.
T develp hw t prtect crcdiles.
T recrd when crcdiles interact.
Hw d mst f the crcdiles respnd t baby’ cries?
A.Guarding the speakers.B.Sunbathing n the rcks. C.Attacking ther crcdiles.D.Mving twards the sund.
Which f the fllwing belngs t “alternative acustic clues” in paragraph 4?
A.The vlume f sund.B.The surce f the cries.
C.The evenness f tne.D.The pitch f the vice.
Which statement wuld Grimault prbably agree with?
Humans are sensitive t vices f ther species.
Emtins may be shared beynd species brders.
Crcs tend t be friendly t babies f any species. D.Crss-species cmmunicatin is an unfading skill.
