Cultural Ntes The Dragn Gate is the mst phtgraphed site in San Francisc’s Chinatwn. The gate was designed by three Chinese-American architects in 1967 using traditinal Chinese village gates fr inspiratin.The Tin Hw Temple is the ldest Taist temple in Chinatwn, and ne f the ldest Chinese temples in the United States. The temple was built in 1852, but then destryed by the 1906 earthquake. The image f the gddess Mazu was preserved, as well as part f the altar and the bell. These were relcated t the tp flr f a building cnstructed n the site f the ld temple.
Cultural NtesThe Bank f Cantn is actually the ld Chinese Telephne Exchange, a traditinal Chinese-style building cnstructed in 1894. When the telephne was first intrduced, there was n way t dial a number. Instead, yu wuld have t talk t a switchbard peratr (nearly always a wman), tell her the telephne number f the persn yu wanted t talk t, and she wuld manually cnnect yu t the persn yu wanted t call using an electric plug. Hwever, Chinese residents thught it was implite t use a number t refer t a persn, s the switchbard peratrs in Chinatwn had t knw all the names and addresses f everyne in Chinatwn s they wuld knw wh t cnnect peple t. They als had t knw five dialects f Chinese and speak English. Like many buildings in Chinatwn, the Chinese Telephne Exchange was destryed by the 1906 earthquake, but it was quickly rebuilt. Hwever, in 1949 it was clsed when dial telephnes made switchbards unnecessary. The Bank f Cantn bught and restred the building in 1960.
